TONY'S 10 METRE BAND REPORT - 13/12/2012

December 13, 2012

Dull, low down, scratchy week. Then came the contest!
The two maps here show the stark contrast between the typical week day, Friday and Sunday, the peak contest day. Each track represents the path (not actual) between a transmitting station and a spotter.
5T0SP (Mauritania) & ZL9HR (Campbell Is) tussled it out in the week but during the contest D4C (Cape Verde) was easily the top dog.
Friday's map

Sunday's map

Carl, VR2CB , dropped back in for the contest. “I managed to get on 10m over the weekend of the ARRL contest (and as my neighbour was away for once so I did not suffer heavy QRN!). Listened near the bottom of the band where there was lots of CW activity although as usual most was far faster than my copying ability… On SSB on Sunday I managed to bag a couple of new ones (P40CX & PJ2T) and I experienced a nice opening to the USA in the evening via long path propagation. So whilst my vertical does have its negative aspects it sometimes surprises me by bringing in signals from locations in which I would probably not be beaming if I had a directional aerial.” Hope the family are all well, Carl.

Paul, VK5PAS, worked quite a lot during the contest. Here are a few of the more interesting ones. GT8IOM 5/6, GM5X 5/6, 5Q2T 5/7, XU1A 5/9, XV1X 5/9, XE1GRR 5/7, HK1R 5/8, P39P 5/9, OD5ZZ 5/9, AU2JCB 5/8, 4X0A 5/7, A61BK 5/9, UP2L 5/9, P29FR 5/9 and BV2013LF 5/9. “Well a very quiet week for me on 10m other than the ARRL 10m contest held over the weekend. Conditions here appeared to be very poor on the short path during the Australian evening. I hardly heard a signal on the band until the weekend. During the contest I worked 273 stations but conditions were poor here. Even the JA stations were hard to find. Europe was coming in okay on Saturday evening on the SP but virtually nothing on the Sunday. North America was very poor on the sp on Saturday morning here and justa little better on the Sunday. I have only listed some of the more interesting stations I worked on Saturday & Sunday.” Exactly what every one else was finding Paul.

Andy, M0HLT , was active during the contest but didn’t work many. RZ4FWW, RA3QPY, IK2YCW, IK2CJ, II4K and I4VEQ heard were PY2WDX,PP5JD,CE3CT and CE1/P/K7CA (what a mouthful). “I thought conditions were awful (Re-ARRL contest) although Sunday was better with a early morning opening to Russia and then a dead band until around 5,15pm when suddenly Italy came through, followed by South America, and all gone by 6,30pm (with me) Although a local G4 and fellow M0 I work each morning on the local repeater on the way to work, reported hearing JA's and W's , and I am around 400ft ASL and half a mile from the Atlantic sea / Celtic sea, with a ground mounted vertical and ground rising behind me!! go figure that out? very selective propagation? Merry Xmas.” Same to you and yours and thanks for your reports, keep them coming.

Sun: Two sunspot clusters and neither really active.
The annual Geminid Meteor Shower is set to peak on Dec. 13 and 14, 2012. The display, which is caused by an unusual 'rock comet,' could produce more than 100 meteors per hour during the dark hours before dawn this Thursday and Friday. Click here for the FULL STORY from NASA.

And there’s more. A possible new meteor shower this month. Comet Wirtanen was discovered in 1948, just after World War II, and takes 5.4 years to orbit the sun. It reaches its closest point to the sun just outside Earth's orbit. Although this comet has skirted Earth's orbit many times, Earth has not run into its debris streams before. 2012 could be different. Read about it here.

FIT-SAT 1 should be heard on 437.250MHz and seen (LED morse) possible naked eye or binoculars between 22:10 and 22:14 on Thursday 13th December in the UK and Europe. The weather forecast, at least for the UK is clear (but **?*ing cold)

Stoke City drew 0 – 0 away against Villa. Hard task for us this weekend at home to Everton. They are on a charge at the moment.
