BOTSWANA Correction Muchenje AM tx site: 24 41 48 E 17 57 11 S
The posted tx site in Muchenje is used for VHF and/or UHF antennas, the
actual mediumwave site is several km to the east next to Transit road:

[later] mwlist: I am appealing for help from those of you in South Africa
or indeed others to explain to me why the perfectly adequate facilities at
Sebele were delisted and as a result 945 kHz was allocated to Mmathethe. I
have established that the new place is a suburb of Gaborone. Where is the
relevant mast?

Based on all the posted info, my conclusion is that the Sebele tx site
closed down or became inactive on 972 kHz without any frequency changes.

Shortly before or after that the new site in Mmathethe on 945 kHz went on
air, it was already received in late 2008 on a remote receiver located in
South Africa. And, then we all assumed that 945 kHz was broadcasting from
Sebele, which didn t seem to be accurate.

After a short search using Google Earth and Google Maps I have located the
allocated tx site in Mmathethe. So, now the actual tx location
broadcasting 945 kHz has been visually confirmed.

Thanks to him I am prepared to declare the Botswana riddle solved. The
resolution on GE is pretty poor but it is much better in Bing Maps and
recent Terra Server images are good too. Well done Bjoern.

CHINA 7390, Dec 26 at 1435, Firedrake vs something in Chinese, i.e. VOA
Cantonese via Philippines.

9315 Dec 26 at 1436, humbuzz jamming and I think Firedrake is in there
too, against VOA Mandarin via Tinian.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Dec 26)

Re 7390. Yes, came across this strong Firedrake music jamming here in
Germany around 1430 UT Dec 26. // VOA Cantonese via Saipan on slightly odd
frequency 9705.030 kHz, on mid winter path also to Europe S=8 signal.

At same time 1440 UT VoINS Cimanggis in Indonesian 9525.892 kHz.

Three stns on 4750v "in parallel" at 1450 UT, only CNR1 to identify on
even 4750, two others on 4749.954 and 4749.990 kHz, maybe Indonesia or
Bangladesh ? or even QPBS Xining ? - a puzzle.

4765.058 Tajik Radio #1 from Yangi Yul, weak at 1500 UT.

4780.074 Voice of Russia via Yangi Yul TJK, S=7 not much strong
at 1510 UT.

4850.000 Hoarse audio from CNR 8th progr PBS Urumqi Xinjiang in Kazakh
S=9+5dB into Germany.

5075 PJZS Voice of Pujiang, Shanghai, at 1520 UT Dec 26. // rather
strong on 3280 kHz, but much much weaker on // 4950 kHz. According Nagoya
Aoki list only 15 kW of power.

Probably Shanghai - Taopuzhen" (utility site) at 24 53 46 N 118 48 17 E
but recent splendid QSL card of Shanghai skyline to István Hegedüs in
Hungary shows TX site as "Zhenru Town, Shanghai", a downtown location
"houses as far as the eye can see".

Voice of Pujiang, Floor 11, Radio Building, No. 1376 Hongqiao Road,
Changning District, Shanghai 200051, P.R. of China.

I guess meant for sailors and fishermen off the Shanghai coastline?

lesquelles l'administrateur judiciaire d'Africa n+1, Me Roger Valère

GABON Mismanagement and embezzlement of public money paralyze Africa n+1
to 22 December 2012

Just like many great achievements Gabon (Railway Transgabonais Air Gabon
Great hotels Libreville and Franceville, etc.)., Radio Pan Africa No.1
just to recover profits and serenity among its valiant journalists.

These are entered on strike since Wednesday to end the poisonous
atmosphere maintained by a management that fails to implement a
restructuring plan despite the sums allocated to the radio Pan out of the
galley in which it is immersed.

Journalists complain of non-payment of 5 months salary arrears and dque
never collected. This is one of the reasons for the administrator to
Africa No. 1, Mr. Roger Valère Moussadji was arrested and taken into
custody by the Judicial Police (PJ) in Libreville.

It is requested that Mr. Moussadji justify the use of 800 million CFA
francs available to Africa No. 1 shortly before the holding of the African
Cup of Nations (CAN) in January 2012 in Libreville and Equatorial Guinea.

Placed under receivership in 2011, Africa No. 1 has not rebounded palpable
and his situation worsened.

Journalists have however obtained gouverneent the next settlement
guarantee their salaries.

Africa No 1 radio station is a Gabonese created in 1981. She had, at its
inception, the status of a mixed economy company, which combines Gabon and
France. It is broadcast in Africa, Europe, and North America. This is the
first international radio general of the African continent.

The resort boasts an audience of 30 million people in the world.

In 1996, it stood at 20 million.

Station Africa No. 1 is born from the desire of the late President Omar
Bongo Ondimba which begins to erect a broadcasting center in Moyabi,
operational in 1979. In 1981 the Gabonese government, private investors
and fund the creation of SOFIRAD Africa No. 1. SOFIRAD now dissolved by
the French government sells its shares to a consortium owned by the Libyan
government.

In exchange for financial support SOFIRAD (French-owned company), the
relay station Moyabi since February 1981, Radio France Internationale
(RFI).

GERMANY Norddeutscher Rundfunk on shortwave. I checked already that
program NDR Gruss an Bord on various worldwide remote rx.

Part 1:
1900-2100 9850 WER 100 kW 285 deg to North Atlantic Ocean
1900-2100 11720 NAU 100 kW 163 deg to SoEaAF, Indian Ocean, SoWeAF
1900-2100 11840 WER 100 kW 120 deg to Western Indian Ocean

1900-2100 13780 NAU 125 kW 235 deg to WeAF, Atlantic Ocean

This special christmas program is not meant TECHNICALLY to German
listeners within German speaking target in central Europe like
D/SUI/AUT/LUX/F via Nauen and Wertachtal sites, except on various MW and
FM outlets in northern parts of Germany, via web Livestream.

Reception in Japan, Finland, Moscow[1st part only] and Australia was
totally nil.

Livestream program is 6 seconds behind 13780 kHz SW broadcast.

At 19 UT:
In Florida is the favorite 9850 kHz at S=9+10 dB level,
also in MA/NY on proper S=9+20dB signal strength, at 285degr azimuth from
Germany. 11840 kHz noisy above threshold.
In Germany reported, that both 11840 kHz outlets are NOT SYCHRONIZED.

Reception on the relatively close Mediterranean / Riviera area:

13780 S=9, 11965 S=7-8, 11840 very strong S=9+40dB at powerhouse level,
11720 S=7-8, and back lobe of North Atlantic outlet on 9850 kHz kHz fair
S=8-9.

2100-2300 11655 NAU 125 kW 235 deg to WeAF, Atlantic Ocean

7335 not clean here in Europe, maybe better on Atlantic Ocean and
Carribean target at 270 degr path. Two co-channel stations QRM, like HCJB
Woofferton in Arabic and Mandarin from CR Bussiness Radio.

9490 two not synchronized signals, Nauen signal was ahead,
but Wertachtal signal approx. 2.5 to 3 seconds behind. S=9 on Moscow SDR
unit.

9650 in Moscow QRM by Voice of Korea from Kujang in Japanese, co-channel.

9735 Weak signal, and suffered by extreme strong Voice of Vietnam
powerhouse on adjacent 9730 kHz.

11655 surprise, surprise, backlobe S=9+5dB in Moscow, and fair S=8 signal
on Riviera.

NDR Hamburg, Gruss an Bord.

... rather on DAB+ here in Germany than on SW but it could be interesting
for you that from 2100-2200 UT the transmission actually consisted of a
church service from St. Johannis cathedral in Hamburg, 2200-2300 UT was
from NDR studios again with greetings and music from the city of Leer
which, by the way and completly accidental, is only a few miles away from
HCJB's Weenermoor 3995 kHz tx site. They did have some greetings in
English, too, as it was already mentioned here.

If you are interested, here is a short clip from the studio where they
recorded the show:

See my comment on v9580 kHz area:
I heard PBS Marulas, Quezon City on the upper flank on 9581.766 kHz, about
10 days ago, but in our early European morning. Puzzle: That frequency
usage by PBS should be confirmed from Japanese or HongKong remote SDR rx
posts - very easily, around 4-6 UT slot.

Nagoya Aoki list mentions 500 watt of power only.

I guess at 19 UT in Australia you heard the odd operation of Medi-1 in
Nador Morocco instead. Which is at present on odd 9579.140 kHz (Dec 25).
Latter outlet is settled down odd operation since end August with 250 kW
of power, and was widely reported in DXpress.

Probably due of refurbishing and mast replacing work on the 3 big beast

earlier the year. Also 15 MHz Nador operation 08-22 UT on v15349 kHz

In Amberg, England und Italien S=9+30dB mit 1. Hop.

Sonntagssendungen fuer Rumaenen im Ausland fuer ME/NE/EGY/LBY/NoAF kamen

empfangen.

stark wie 15325 kHz !

RUSSIA Powerful broadcasting interested MOE and the Ministry of Defense.

The Government proposes to upgrade the system with the release of a
powerful radio into a separate entity.

Photo: rtrs.rf

Ministry of Communications sent to the government a draft resolution to
upgrade the network of powerful radio broadcasting, which is currently
operated by the state company RTRS, told "Izvestia" a source close to the
government. The network, which is used for broadcasting to large parts of
the country radio station "Mayak" and "Radio Russia" today is unprofitable
and is about to close.

According to data presented in the RTRS Government Commission (a copy is
in "News"), due to reductions in broadcasting companies RTR and "Voice of
Russia" unprofitability powerful radio in 2013 will increase to 2.5
billion rubles to 1.01 billion rubles 2012. The draft resolution proposes
to modernize the system of powerful radio and then select it from the
authority of the jurisdiction RTRS separate entity under the control of
the state.

The fate of the powerful broadcasting in Russia was, after the Russian
government in June its decision to withdraw from the federal target
program for the development of broadcasting up to 2015 targets for the
development of networks of broadcasting. Excluded from the program goal of
100% coverage of the population of the Russian Federation broadcasting the
specified quality. Does not provide for a more objective and enable
digital broadcasting Russian radio in foreign countries with highly
reliable reception.

For these reasons were canceled plan the modernization of the existing
analogue network and translate it into a digital format. As part of this
work was planned to install 17 digital transmitters for long-wave (LW)
band. For programs "Radio Russia" in the country should have been
installed 79 transmitters medium wave (MW) range of 30 transmitters and
short-wave (HF) range. To broadcast programs of the "Voice of Russia" in
the foreign country in the mid and short waves envisaged 82 digital
transmitter and NE-SW-band antennas and 12 full-circle HF band. The total
amount of government funding of these studies was 13.7 billion rubles.

Due to the cancellation were terminated and the financing. The decision
put RTRS, empowered to manage the network of powerful radio, in a
difficult position. The fact is that, according to RTRS, network equipment
is worn out, which is why it takes a lot of maintenance costs. In 2012
RTRS expected losses on the content network of powerful radio broadcasting
in the amount 1.01 billion rubles.

The prospect is for a powerful radio in Russia, if not take some
conservation measures, even worse. RTRS as reported in the government
commission, the main customers for the propagation of powerful radio
network - the company RTR and the "Voice of Russia" - notified to reduce
its broadcasting in 2013, and, accordingly, to reduce fees for signal
distribution.

In particular, RTR said that do not use a signal to broadcast radio
"Mayak" transmitters in the LF, MF and VHF (VHF) bands throughout Russia.
The company retains broadcast of "Mayak" only in the UHF range in Moscow,
Sochi, and in 50 regional, provincial and national centers. This will
result in 562 stopped broadcasting transmitters. "Voice of Russia" since
January 1, 2013 also significantly reduces broadcasting to foreign
countries in the HF range, making RTRS income decreased by 299.6 million
rubles.

Overall, the decline in broadcasting RTR and "Voice of Russia" in 2013,
will increase the loss of a powerful radio RTRS compared with 2012's 2.5
times - up to 2.5 billion rubles.

At the same time, to maintain a strong interest broadcasting Russian
forces. This is due to the ability of the network to distribute the signal
to large parts of several few radio centers. At a meeting at the Ministry
of Communications, held last week, representatives of the Ministry of
Emergency Situations reported on the feasibility of using high-power radio
to alert the public in emergency situations. Representatives of the
Defense Ministry, in turn, have expressed interest in using the powerful
broadcasting for mobilization purposes, as well as for special tasks, such
as electronic warfare tasks.

Chairman of the consortium, "Digital Broadcasting Technology Platform"
(CTPD) Andrew Bryksenkov also draws attention to the fact that the
availability of the information infrastructure and transmitting the
centers in any country included in the strategy of "active defense." In
this essential infrastructure survivability and powerful radio many times
higher survivability satellite constellation and the Internet, including
the fact that most of transmitting the centers are located in the interior
of the country in the area of ??responsibility of air defense systems.

- Infrastructure powerful country radio CB, LW, SW-band signal with a
radius of coverage area with a radius of 800-1200 km and the ability to
cover the HF broadcasting signal any sector on the earth at a particular
period is one of the main means of delivering information - emphasizes the
expert.

According to the source "News" in the draft government resolution proposal
to "modernize the system with the release of a powerful radio into a
separate entity." Upgrades planned for 2015, will be a source of financing
the state budget. Prior to the completion of modernization powerful
broadcasting will run RTRS, then become self-subordination structure.

In this regard, the official representative of RTRS Igor Stepanov said
that the company is satisfied with this speeding up the issue of a
powerful radio broadcasting.

- There are different options for further action, which have their pros
and cons, but that omission is both bad - said Stepanov.

SRI LANKA 1548 kHz Trincomalee off air.

Yes Jose, 1548 is having a TX problem, so Athmik Yathra and all 1548 kHz
have been transferred to Puttalam on 1125 (50 kW) alternating with FEBA.
They hope to get the TX back on the air soon.

In the meantime any reports comparing 1125 with 1548 kHz will be most
welcome. If you need QSLs send the reports to SLBC and if you want me to
chase up and help CC me.

Many thanks dear Georgi, yes - I'd my doubts to identify the music played

When tuned-in again at 1848 UT, the station had left the air, so maybe the
had AN ADDITIONAL bc hour extension tonight from Chennai / AIR South

Yesterday Dec 23 I noted Bangladesh Betar around 1750-1900 UT, but this
signal was spoiled of a lot of 50 Hertz spurious on range 7244 to 7252 kHz
- I guess - these spurious - not from Dhaka on even 7250 kHz, but from
another peak visible on 7249.978 kHz.

Formerly also AIR Goa Panaji scheduled in Malayalam at 1730-1830 UT co-
channel but observed also on rather odd frequency minus 22 Hertz
on Sept 13, 2012.

They were playing Comtemporary Christian Music selections with great sound
quality unlike the muddy audio when they first came back sometime ago.

I guess The Lord gave us the chance to enjoy this station again since they
were first heard back in 1982 when they used to carry GH's DX program.I do
Hope they might consider carrying it once again for Dxers on the air.

USA "Wavescan" CALLING AFRICA ! "Focus on Africa".

During the entire coming year, 2013, programming in the AWR DX program,
"Wavescan", will be concentrated upon the radio broadcasting scene on the
continent of Africa, including nearby islands and the Middle East.

Tentative planning for the scheduling of radio features includes a
historic rundown of an African radio station, large or small, as the the
main opening topic every 3rd week. As follow on topics in the weekly half
hour program, many additional African features will be presented,
including interviews and on-the-spot recordings made by the program
producer, Jeff White of Radio Miami International WRMI in Florida.

All of the African information that will be presented on air in "Wavescan"
throughout the year 2013 will be under the title, "Focus on Africa", and
the purpose for this year long emphasis is to encourage the development of
international radio broadcasting and shortwave listening throughout the
African arena. The international DX program, "Wavescan" is researched and
written in Indianapolis and produced by Jeff White in the studios of
shortwave WRMI in Miami.

We here at "Wavescan" always welcome reception reports from our listeners,
and we receive listener mail from some 100 countries throughout the world.
All reception reports are verified with our QSL cards through the postal
system, and of course, some form of return postage is always appreciated.

In particular, we would welcome reception reports from listeners living in
continental Africa and nearby areas. The international DX program
"Wavescan" is the current name for the original DX program, "Radio
Monitors International" that was launched from the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation in 1975, as part of the shortwave scheduling of Adventist
World Radio.

Today I received a letter from CVC Media in South Africa with the
information that "we sadly have to cease our SW broadcasts as from the

Summary of SW, MW cuts from 1 January

Below is a summary of various SW and MW transmitter closures which are are
mostly due to take effect from 1 January. This is summarised from reports
which will be occur at DX media/press:

Croatia
Voice of Croatia is dropping SW in Croatia, Germany and Singapore relays;
but continuing on MW Zadar 1134 kHz

Germany
Voice of Russia is dropping MW relays on 630 (Koenigslutter/Schepau),
1323 (Wachenbrunn), and 1431 (Dresden Wilsdruff).
Only remaining German relay freq is 693 kHz (Oranienburg Zehlendorf,
{Berlin})

Hungary
MR6 Regio Radio closed on 22 December. A new station Radio Danko is using
former MR6 frequencies of 1116, 1251, 1350 kHz with Hungarian and gipsy
folk music and rural news (similar to Antena Satelor in Romania).

Norway
NRK Rost 675 kHz is closing - a planned closure announced some time ago.

Russia
-St Petersburg SW site is closing (including MW 1494 kHz), dom MW remain.
-Samara SW site is also reported to be closing.
-Mayak is closing on MW/LW throughout Russia.
-Voice of Russia is reducing some of its SW/MW output across its language
services following budget cuts.

Zambia
CVC 1Africa is dropping SW. (Had been scheduled on 13590 kHz at 0600-2200
UT but 13590 kHz has not been heard for several days, I suspect it has
already been switched off)

The above is fairly grim news for short wave, though on the positive side
there have been a couple of stations reactivating on SW recently - Radio
Uganda on 4976 kHz and Bangladesh reactivated with a new SW transmitter
earlier this year.
