CROATIA HRT Voice of Croatia left shortwave now for good, only night sce
of MW 1134 kHz Zadar is regularly on air.

The Voice of Croatia originated as a one-hour programme that launched in
1991 only on short wave and was designed exclusively Croats abroad. In
2000 the show expanded to two hours and added English and Spanish, to
inform the international public about events in Croatia - not only the
Croatian diaspora. Voice of Croatia began regular 24-hour programming from
15 May 2003 on medium wave to Europe and via satellite, shortwave radio
the internet for the whole world.

CYPRUS [Northern Turkish occupied area] Radio Bayrak 6150 kHz.
{in a letter to Mauno Ritola and Costa Constantinides}

Dear Costa / Dear Mauno,
Thank you very much for your good wishes for the holiday season. May I
also express my best wishes for the new year. Let us hope it will be a
better year for all of us, bringing along peace and tranquility to all
humanity, especially to those who need it most. I also hope that you have
had your good times with the family and friends during the holidays.

As for Radio Bayrak International on the shortwave, the transmitter is
still on the air, however with a reduced power. You may recall as I had
told you in the past, that the damage to the antenna system is much bigger
than we had anticipated. We did some repair job, but it still needs a lot
of renovation. There is, however, a big discussion going on about cutting
the expenses in all areas, due to the recent economic crisis. The
government is

considering the close-down of the shortwave services, which I strongly
oppose. But this situation has caused the flow of all finances to be
stopped and I guess I will have to put in a lot of extra effort to
possibly secure some finances aimed at the renovation of the system. Wish
me luck; it is a tough job.

Apart from, and alongside, my profession, I have been a radio enthusiast
ever since my childhood. I built my first tx and rx at very young ages. I
have operated as a radio amateur for a long time. I know very well how
DX'ing adds to our joy and how it serves as a means for training the young
inidividuals, as well as serving for the encounters of the people from
different parts of the world. I will definitely do my best to put the
system back on the air with maximum power, as I beleive such activities
make world a better place.

Thank you very much for your interest in Radio Bayrak International. I
also apologize for the late response. I am not able to check this mail
when I am away from office or travelling, unless I have my old-style lap-
top with me.

Kind Regards,

22. Dezember 2012 gestartete Danko Radio
<danko.radio.hu>

1000 Uhr), Serbisch (1400-1600 Uhr), Rumaenisch (1600-1800 Uhr),

Puzzled me past 30 mins from 0245 UT Dec 31, a very dirty spurious signal

KYRGYZ REP [tentativelly] Trans World Radio New MW transmitter in
Asia.

"As TWR tests the potential for digital ministry, it continues to break
ground in the radio medium that the organisation was built upon. In May
the unidentified Asian country that will be host to the PANI transmitter
was granted a broadcast licence for the powerful AM project, which has the
potential of reaching almost a quarter of a billion people in Pakistan,
Afghanistan and north India. Donations to the major project have been
exceedingly generous, but about 25% of the cost still has to be raised.

'The target to complete the construction is the end of the year [2012],
but this is very much dependent on the weather conditions, on the
suppliers and the subcontractors' said Werner Kroemer, TWR vice-president
of global operations. 'Don't forget: We are installing the transmitting
facilities in a part of the world where even simple things can turn out to
be very difficult to do or to get'".

MYANMAR/KOREA D.P.R. 9730.491 Also noted two stns around 9730 kHz,
undoubtedly VoKorea Kujang on odd 9729.969 kHz in English, also probably
Myanmar Radio, from Rangoon, scheduled 0230-0730 UT, heard on
odd 9730.491 kHz. At 0415 UT Dec 31.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Dec 31)

MYANMAR Thazin is not on 7110 kHz yet, there appears to be a Myanmar
station on 9735 kHz sounding very much like it did on the former but very
weak and lost in splatter from BBC in Kranji on 9740 kHz. Yes, it is still
there but for how long. Although strong it is a little weaker than on the
31st.
(Robin L. Harwood-Tas-AUS VK7RH, dxld Jan 1)

MYANMAR I think I have the explanation for this situation. One of the
two transmitters is off thr air. So the monitored situation is something
like this.

2330-0130 UT they use the available tx on 7110, and 6030 kHz is off the
air.

0130-0230, 0430-0830 UT on 9590 kHz and the service on 9460 kHz is off the
air.

0930-1500 UT 7110 is off the air and the tx just came on the air on
7345 kHz at 1030 UT. They might attempt to have the 7110 kHz service
once 7345 kHz s.off at 1330 UT. Need to check it.
(Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK, dxld Dec 31)

NORWAY The NRK Rost transmitter on 675 kHz near Lofoten in Northern
Norway closed on 31 December. The decision to close it was taken some two
years ago at the same time as it was decided to close the Vigra MW
transmitter [630 kHz] on 30 June 2011.

Rost was serving the fishing fleet in the North Atlantic area. It was put
on the air as recently as May 1999, replacing another transmitter some
distance away. With most ships now using satellite receivers, it was felt
that Rost was no longer needed.

After the closure of Rost, Longyearbyen (Svalbard) on 1485 kHz and Ingoy
on 153 kHz will be the only remaining [NRK] AM broadcast transmitters in
Norway. Longwave will probably continue for a while because of the
difficulties of getting satellite signals as far north as the Barents Sea.

ROMANIA The name of this new programme is "Echo de l'Europe" in French.
(Jean-Michel Aubier-F, dxld Dec 27)

7290 via Radiocom Saftica site. L'Echo de l'Europe introductory broadcast
via IRRS, Romania, heard at 1945-1954 UT in both French and English with
an excellent signal here in Massachusetts. Future programs to promote
understanding of the European Union and European events in general. Should
fill a gap left since most European nations have cut their shortwave
services over the last couple of years. Programs will be brief 15 minutes
in both French and English but will not be the same in each language.
(Stephen Wood-MA-USA, Sat Dec 22, dxld Dec 27)

ROMANIA On Sunday Dec 30, 1054-1058 UTC (closedown) heard on 14060 kHz.
The Modulation was somewhat broad, slightly distorted. At the end of the
jingle comes several times. I have heard many times, but it can't
currently assign any station. Can you even listen to the attachment?

(Mikhail Timofeyev, Krasny Bor station, Dec 30, hcdx / dxld)

RUSSIA Radio Mayak abandons MW/LW. Moscow daytime bandscan is much
exotic for German average DXer like a bandscan in the south sea near
Vanuatu ...

Radio Mayak abandons MW/LW, Voice of Russia cuts from Jan 1st. Also still
on air Radio Mayak 810 kHz Volgograd.

In Moscow easily heard German longwave DLR 177 kHz at 1100 UT on Jan 1.

I made a bandscan in Moscow rx unit at 1245-1330 UT Jan 1, speciality is

9840 Radio Rossii powerful Russian service via Taldom-Moscow towards
Russian nationals in Central and Western Europe, observed on powerful
level of S=9+45dB at 0450 UT Jan 2.

11895 UNIDentified tx site. Tatarstan Wave from Kazan still on Radio
Rossii service via shortwave domestically - probably from Moscow back to
Central Russia area -. Weak signal at 0410-0500 UT, left the air exact
0500:05 UT.

9410 2nd programm of the day from Tatarstan Wave Kazan (Radio Rossii)
started punctual at 0610 UT Jan 2.

TX from Moscow! site was on air very early around 0550 UT, S=9+30dB
powerful in Moscow, so I guess is a local tx site (Taldom?) which took
over service from Samara tx site now?

11635drm From 0600 UT VoRussia's English service in digital mode via
Taldom site, powerful S=9+30dB propagation into central Germany, but S=8-9
signal in Italy, Austria and northern Germany on sidelobe.

Far East and Pacific sce to AUS/NZL/SoEaAS in English noted 21800 via
Irkutsk, was stronger in Australia at start 0600-0615 UT range S=9+10dB,
// 21820 kHz, only S=7-8 from Novosibirsk tx site. Interview of some young
lady music performer, and 'disbursement' from the music industry.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 2)

12075 Radio Rossii in Russian scheduled at 0725-1200 UT via RC#3 Taldom
Moscow site. S=9+15dB direct at Moscow, but S=9+40dB in Germany, 0815 UT
Jan 2. Russian songs on amore ... ljubow ... ljubliiej ti moi.

11610 3rd programm of the day from Tatarstan Wave Kazan (Radio Rossii)
carrier already on air at 0748 UT, started punctual at 0810 UT Jan 2,
S=9+30dB in Germany, speech to the crowd at 0820 UT.

TX from Moscow! site was on air very early around 0748 UT, S=9+45dB
powerful in Moscow, so I guess is a local tx site (Taldom?) which took
over service from Samara tx site now?

[ARMENIA/RUSSIA] 9395 Spanish service of Voice of Russia from Gavar
Armenia site, noted again with very "unclean" satellite feed audio,
'scratchy noise' programm over and over, or is the final stage tube at the
tx wrong? That audio noise scratches observed on many days in past weeks.
Noted at 0435 UT Jan 2. S=9+30dB in Germany sidelobe towards Latin
America.

9765 // Spanish service of Voice of Russia from Gavar Armenia site. Much
better audio, but southerly bearing, only S=9+5dB in Germany.

TAIWAN Reading all this gloom & doom on the shortwave front here's
something to cheer up for 2013...

Five new 300 kW DRM compatible shortwave transmitters for Asia
<http://www.ampegon.com/news/?id=6>
{source code shows Taiwan mentioned, wb.}

No info on where these txers are headed for but my wild guess is Taiwan
... yours ?
(Alokesh Gupta-IND, dxld Dec 29)

If you look at the photo source in the press release, the filename
actually has "Taiwan" in it!

<http://www.ampegon.com/index.php?rex_img_type=large&rex_img_file=300kw_kw_taiwan__diagonal_3.jpg>
(Fibber, dxld Dec 30)

Alokesh: More than likely it could be for RTI in Taipei (My Best Guess),
but who knows? This may improve the signal of the RTI station by insuring
they don't loose the relay via Okeechobee reaching from the US to Asia.
Ampegon is a newly formed company which was part known as Thomson-CSF at
one time and possibly Swiss German ABB {at Turgi-SUI,
Mannheim/Schifferstadt Germany}. I wish them luck in this new project.
(Noble-TN, dxld Dec 30)

Re: Five new 300 kW DRM compatible shortwave transmitters for Asia.

These were my wildest assumptions, wb.
[see Taiwan location mentioned ABOVE in PDF source code]

Hm, five Rigid antennas ... RIGID antenna page 7 right of
<http://www.ampegon.com/files/ampegon_antenna_systems.pdf>
also image of DRM RTL Junglinster Luxemburg directional antenna aimed at
Berlin angle. "near distant coverage" antenna, also visible once at TRT
Cakirlar northern area part, DWL Sines Portugal...

Re RTL, actually modestly directional, with comparatively steep elevation.
This antenna aims at Berlin, it was an attempt to achieve the best
possible coverage of Germany on 6090/6095 which they intended to use for
that paltry "national radio station for Germany" which, as it seems, could
soon be replaced by some new program output from Berlin, considering that
they applied for a new licence there.
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Dec 30)

My guess - that could be also fit to South Korea?
who can need other channels for the propaganda war and distance next to
the target distance, would be countered the North Koreans purchase and
erection of recent BBEF Made in China units at Kanggye for their vv Korean
language radio war.

Kimje is over-booked by masts in area, so that Rigid ant will be an
extending investment to different KOR site?

MND:
;02-NOV-2011: add: JAA JangAn, KOR, 37N02 126E51

or extension at a lot of space at
KOR Sagang Hwaseong 37 12 49.55 N 126 46 40.69 E

other assumptions belong to:
RTI (they have so much high-gain up to 8 dipole vertical rows antennas,
- they really need any Rigid antennas?)

Yamata Japan refurbishing (they have so much high-gains up to 8 dipole
rows antennas, they really need any Rigid antennas?)

rather not VoVTN Son Tay modernization ?
(they would rather buy BBEF Made in China gear).

Rigid Dipole Antennas
Shortwave broadcasters with near distant coverage areas can now profit
from a space-saving antenna innovation from Ampegon based on our well-
proven rigid folded dipole technology. An obvious disadvantage of
classical open wire design, i.e. the need of antenna suspension towers
with all their guy ropes, is reduced to a single self-supporting central
tower. Consequently ground space, material, assembly and maintenace works
are minimized to a cost-efficient solution. With robust, easy-to-maintain
and highly reliable RF components, the system has a very high availability
with extraordinarily long MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) and very short
MTTR (Mean Time To Repair).

The rigid dipole antenna has a remarkably small footprint and allows
installation on even smallest estates. There is no need of extensive and
complex guy ropes including insulations and foundations. The antenna
radiation characteristics are optimized for DRM.

Re: Five new 300 kW DRM compatible shortwave transmitters for Asia.
Btw, the penultimate PDF page shows very likely the antenna of one of the
new 800 kW mediumwave outfits at Al-Dhabbaya, in particular the 1539 kHz
one I think.

But what's this on the left side of this PDF page, also further up on PDF
pages 4 and 5? Kashi?

That's not a pure ALLISS antenna type. There are new fixed RIGID dipol

TAJIKISTAN 252 kHz has been noted off for several weeks. They used to
be heard around the clock here (150 kW at 500 miles distance). No sign of
them day or night. Algeria 252 kHz in French (750 kW night at 3570 miles)
weak but steady with a fade in around 1630 UT, or 9:00 PM local. I will
keep trying for most wanted Ireland.

Mittelwellen jetzt noch betreibt (702, 891, 927, 954 und 1062 kHz;

Funkhauses Temeswar (darunter 1100-1200 Uhr UT Deutsch).

So it's the power an unused antenna picks up. This antenna can be seen at
the horizont when viewed from the transmitting antenna. Despite the
distance the rcv'ed power is quite high...

USA 13570 WINB Red Lion, PA, USA, 2007 UT Wed Jan 2nd. Was heard
broadcasting in English on 13570 kHz with "Wavescan" from AWR hosted by
Jeff White, covering closedown of Croatia's Shortwave Service as they move
to Online Media content platforms.

Luigi Kobise had her JSWC report from Tokyo was also featured. A Profile
of The DW Transmitting station was featured as well, with a strong 60db
signal!

My Hats off to WINB for carrying this program.

WINB is one of the oldest continously run outlets currently on the air
today. After Wavescan was Station ID giving frequency, mailing address,
url and email contact information.

Good signal with some hash interference from possibly the computer on my
table as I was recharging the radio batteries at that time. Wavesacan
played two versions of a country's National Anthem, again strong signal.
I might shoot for my first QSL from Wavescan heard on WINB!

USA 5830 Terrible scratchy signal audio adjacent to WTWW on 5830 kHz,
at 0545 UT Jan 2, S=8 in Germany. What's wrong there? Scratchy signal on
5829 to 5834 kHz range.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 2)

I checked the frequency yesterday and did not notice scratchy signal, must
have happened after scanning to another frequency on my receiver. I will
check tonight (UT Thursday) to see how it comes in. Hope it's fixed.

Terrible WTWW 5830 scratchy signal audio 0545 UT Jan 2, S=8 in Germany,
didn't originate from fundamental WTWW signal, but something Cuban jamming
or jamming-sounded UTE signal on upper flank in 5829 to 5834 kHz range.
