Re: 873 kHz SWITCH OFF ...
Hi Wolfgang,
thank you very much for these materials!

One question: at what time AFN Frankfurt switched the 873 TX off actually?
It was planned for 16:00 CEST (1400 UTC) but when I was listening on the
frequency at 15:40 CEST there seemed to be no signal on the air anymore.

AFN ist jetzt offensichtlich schon weg. Hat jemand eine Mitschnitt ?
Gab es eine Sonder Ansage ?

Hallo Guido,
der Sender war schon mal kurz um 12.58 UTC weg und dann endgueltig um
13.12 UTC, mitten in den Sportnachrichten. Keine Ansage, einfach den
Sender ausgeschaltet. So bleibt fuer Ruehrung keine Zeit.

Einen Mitschnitt habe ich auch, ist aber voellig unspektakulaer.
Auf 1107 und 1143 kHz lief das AFN Programm normal weiter.

Re: 873 kHz SWITCH OFF ...

Dear Karel,
YESTERDAY I was away with my wife outside in downtown Stuttgart
til 1330 UT,
and when I came back / switched on the Perseus unit at CLOSE-BY place
Darmstadt near Frankfurt/Main, the AFN 873 kHz tx was OFF already, so
sorry.

To lower the US army budget by 400.000 EURO energy costs a year...

The complex was renovated in 2008 with a cost of millions EURos and was
the strongest AFN station in Europe since 1951,
last with 150 kW and was good to hear at night in Europe.

The shutdown was yesterday at 13:17 UT by AFN-Europe command Sheeri Reed.

Michael Haun from Eschborn-Frankfurt told the
Austrian newsgroup:

tx switched OFF for short time at 12.58 UT,
finally TX OFF at 13.12 UTC May 31,
midst on sports news broadcast.

No special announcement.

Ben in Oregon told me about the original AFN unit of 1951,
til the Canadian NAUTEL TX unit came on service in 90ties:

"It's an odd story, but came about at the time of the change from the
original CEMCO 150 kW transmitter to the new Nautel one."

Four mediumwave channels are offered now by the Hesse Wiesbaden government
facilities for further use:
594, 873, 1080, and 1539 kHz.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 1)

They ultimately turned it off at 1312 UT May 31, as uploaded to
<http://soundcloud.com/hawaiifox/afn-873-khz-deactivation-31-05>

It was a quite elaborate procedure: Towards the end the main transmitter
had developed serious non-linear distortions, which may be the reason why
they just one day or so before the closure switched to the aux. The
reduced power was pretty obvious, in southern Brandenburg the station was
during its last night hardly audible as well.

Then during the last hour or so they manipulated the equipment to get cool
video footage. Ultimately they switched the main transmitter on again only
to have the commander turning it off on its fancy touch screen.

The ironic thing is that they did a ceremony for their own while on air
the event was as shabby as possible: The carrier simply disappeared in
midst sentence, during completely unrelated programming. There are
observers who consider this as characteristic for the state of the German-
American relations: No interest whatsoever in what they use to call "local
nationals".

Here are some last and first sights of the equipment. The saluting lady is
the mentioned AFN Europe commander, about to touch the screen the video
clip of Genesis - Jesus He Knows Me, anyone?
<http://radioforum.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?8773,1139006,1143296#msg-1143296>

As can be seen there were three operational transmitters, all made by
Nautel: The one from 1994 that back then replaced whatever tube gear and
two ones not installed before 2011, it seems even in 2012 only; the NX200
that was the last main transmitter and the already mentioned aux, rated 50
kW. US taxpayers money, wasted.

The video screens remind of NPR, extensively relayed on this AFN program.
It is being said that NPR even promoted the Weisskirchen outlet itself
("in much of Germany on 873 AM" or something like this).

GREECE Possible cuts coming to ERT.
Rumours for consolidation of Greek Public Radio include ceasing of two
nationwide services and many local radios.

Rumours have been around for several days, concerning what will happen
with the Greek Public Broadcaster ERT; plans came to the light, which even
mention the scenario of total closure and reopening as another company
with the staff reduced by 2,000 and much less services. Although ERT is
not a deficient business, layoffs seem to satisfy the requirements of the
Troika concerning layoffs in the public sector. On the other hand, the
impact on the internal structure and services of ERT seems similar to the
the draft by former minister Mossialos, two years ago, which at that
moment had to be disregarded, but its requirements remain on the table.

Paricularly regarding radio, unconfirmed information published Gregory
Melas in newsit.gr said:
"The consolidation process planned by CEO Gikas Manalis, includes the
closure of many regional radio stations of ERT, whereas the frequencies of
public radio are to be reduced to a maximum of 4. This plan is indeed
progressing rapidly, behind closed doors of the office of chief executive
assisted by only two close associates, two people he brought to Radio
House of Agia Paraskevi, one of them also acting as financial adviser."
Alongside, it seems that ERT3 is also in danger, which also owns two radio
stations in Thessaloniki.

What is new in this piece of information is the fact that Public Radio
frequencies are reduced to four, which can only mean that two of the six
radio programs (First Schedule, Second, Third, EPA Sports, World,
Friendship) will cease operation (;) .

Finally, what angers us is that although the planned project foresees the
shrinking of services provided to the listeners by the Greek radio, there
is no reference to a possible reduction of the contribution fee, which is
charged through electricity bills. This means that it is a contraction
which will remove content, will increase unemployment in the area of
media, without any benefit to the consumer. The benefits are measured only
in compliance with the political objectives of the troika, but also with
the easening of the industrial competition for the similarly shrunk
private broadcasters.

MALAYSIA 5965a Klasik Nasional (via RTM Kajang) 24, 25 May 1230-1300+
UT fair signal w/ similar pgm both days: brief inspirational chat, drop-in
"Klasik-Nasional" jingle, deep-voiced announcer [similar to the guy on
Salam FM, but probably just the K-N DJ], qira'ut until :40, then long, big
production-stylee Klasik Nasional jingle, MoR/EZL ML songs, DJ mentioning
upcoming RTM net news, 1 more song, "Radio Malaysia" spoken just before
another long K-N jingle, then TOH 1+1 pips, & RTM news feed, // 9835 kHz /
11665 kHz but none of the 3 in synch. On the 24th the K-N pgmming ran thru
TOH so only heard the last pip, & on the 25th only 1 long K-N jingle hrd.

5965.00, Klasik Nasional, 1204-1217*, *1220-1235, May 29. After so many
years of hearing them off frequency (ex-5964.7 kHz) was amazed to find
them on exact frequency and seemed a significant increase in power; their
first day with new tx; good reception; should do wonders for their
reception worldwide; off the air from 1217 to 1220 UT, so was glad to hear
them come back; in vernacular and played a lot of music; mostly "Klasik
Nasional" IDs, jingles and song montage with ID; they also played an old
"Radio Klasik" jingle too. Am very pleased with this, as they are one of
my favorite stations!

MALAYSIA 5965 e-QSL - Klasik Nasional - new tx on new 5965.00 kHz.
Dear Mr. Howard,
We hereby acknowledge receipt of your email with detailed reception
reports for:-

1) Klasik Nasional (5965 kHz) heard on 29th May 2013 between
   12:04-12:17 & 12:20 UTC.

Due to recent problems with the old 50 kW transmitter (used since 1975),
we now transmit KN at 100 kW using a newer transmitter installed in 2004.

Your report is very much appreciated and we hope to send the QSL cards to
you at the earliest possible moment. Terima kasih.

ID/info blip (some days full T8WH, Palau ID w/ WHR reception rpt info &
"Onward Christian Soldiers" theme, some days just random portions of the
intro), long tone before RFK programming begins & occasionally just after
the RFK audio shuts off, there's another audio blip from WHR (example from

which Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk in this point of the question,
obviously, can not.

- "Na volne Tatarstana" I hear c 0610 UT on 9690 with 45554 points. If
take into account that the transfer to Central Asia, and I'm in the

RUSSIA Arkhangelskaya oblast. Arkhangelsk. In late April, based on the
reception of the radio center of Arkhangelsk radio television transmitting
center began preparing for the next phase of tests of modern systems of
digital short-wave radio. Very soon new data transmission technology will
be many months "baptism of fire" in a really difficult climatic conditions
of the National Park "Russian Arctic", located on the Franz Josef Land,
and in the Nenets Autonomous District. Communications center will continue
to Arkhangelsk - the oldest Russian "gateway to the Arctic."

Recall that in the late summer of 2012 in Arkhangelsk and Naryan-Mar
specialists of the Russian Television and Broadcasting Network and the
famous German company Rohde & Schwarz conducted the first in our country
successfully tested a new digital radio transmitters operating in the
short-wave band. The positive results of the experiment clearly
demonstrated the importance and potential introduction of advanced radio
technologies in extreme conditions of the Far North, so a new test program
has been expanded.

- This year, the program provides not only technical testing equipment,
and work in the real world for a particular customer, - said the head of
the Radio RTRS Andrew Tereshin. - As stakeholders act of the Arkhangelsk
Oblast and Nenets Autonomous District, as well as the leadership of the
park "Russian Arctic", which requires reliable digital communications to
remote areas. Another difference from last year's test is that this time,
work will continue uninterrupted for several months, as compared with
short sessions, with maximum precision will evaluate the quality of
communication and to identify possible "bottlenecks".

It should be noted that for the Far North of Russia and its Arctic coast,
shortwave radio is not an alternative type of communication, and sometimes
the only way to communicate with the "mainland." It is clear that the cost
of paving, for example, fiber-optic cable over such distances would be
"unaffordable" for the budget of any country. There is not much hope, and
for satellite communications - in the polar regions with latitude above 70
degrees they work very unstable, and the traffic is obtained is extremely
expensive: more than $3 per minute. In addition, in the event of a sudden
deterioration of the military-political situation satellite communications
can be instantly paralyzed, so its strategic reserve can not be
considered.

Special and truly national significance program development and
implementation of a new generation of digital short-wave communication
takes on priority development programs of the Arctic coast and the revival
of the Northern Sea Route, one of the offices which, by the way, will be
established in Arkhangelsk. The new road will cut travel time for goods in
transit is almost three times, and it can prinestinashey country in the
WTO substantial economic benefits, but it needs a lot of effort.

The fact is that in Soviet times almost the entire coast was provided by
hydro-meteorological stations and HF communication, and thus the court had
links with the shore. To date, no communication infrastructure, and this
creates, in particular for seafarers considerable inconvenience. According
to the polar captains in parts satellite completely impossible, and other
forms of communication available to sailors is now simply no ...

- Returning to the short-wave communication - a measure of forced and
completely justified, moreover, it is a worldwide trend - says Andrey
Tereshin.

- In particular, in the United States working to create such a system was
carried out about 10 years ago and has cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
As a result, today HF transmitters provide reliable communications with
subordinate U.S. government agencies around the world.

According to experts, the current stage of transition "back to the future"
is not using outdated for today "classic" tube transmitters, and on the
basis of an entirely new material - with the use of digital technologies
and fundamentally different equipment. Practice shows that the whole
civilized world has already successfully switched to packet data
technology, and our country, too, there is no other way out.

- At the trials in Arkhangelsk are two of the most modern type of
shortwave transmitters - the Russian system PIER (the latest development
of the Russian Institute of High-Power Radio - RIMR), and one of the most
modern equipment sets (4000 series) company Rohde & Schwarz, - told
nachalniknauchnogo Division 3 branches NIIR -SONIIR Sergei Sevostianov.

- These types of equipment have not been used in Russia, so operational
experience, particularly in the high latitudes, our signalers not. Our
goal - to find out the behavior of the "figure" in the conditions of
ionospheric disturbances, it is well known that in the North of radio
propagation conditions are constantly changing.

Participating in the experiment, scientists and communications experts are
confident that they will be able to attract the attention of the country's
leadership to the need to create a backup communications system. The best
illustration of how popular and there is no alternative in extreme
conditions is the HF bond may be events such as flooding in Krymsk when
traditional forms of communication almost did not work.

Since mid-May to late fall, "digital radio bridges" will connect with
Archangel Franz Josef Land and the NAO. Poitogam work will make
recommendations on the use of new types of equipment and antenna systems,
the development of tariffs for the commercial use of communication
channels.

- Short-wave radio communication is inexpensive compared to other types of
telecommunication, and this is one of its major advantages. At the same
time it has its drawbacks, such as, for example, sensitivity to noise and
magnetic fields, - the head of the radio RTRS Andrew Tereshin.

- At HF communications netzadach work as usual for all of us high-speed
Internet access. However, even today's rates for the transfer of "packets"
of information will be sufficient to meet the needs of geologists,
meteorologists, mariners, bankers. And in cases of emergencies HF
communication was, is and will be an essential tool for maintaining
systems of management of public institutions.

Re: PCJ Sunday only broadcast via Trincomalee Sri Lanka.

At Trincomalee we have only one TX and antenna that can handle 12 MHz and
above on the extended 25 m.b. and AWR uses that until 1300 UT, so it will
not be possible to crash start at 1300 UT with PCJ. 11835 kHz is clear of
any cochannel, but does have IND and CNR-1 till 1315 UT after that we have
a 15 MHz clear sidebands. Its easy to get into the target area of
East/SoEa Asia and South Asia clear, but we are trying to see if we can
also get into the Pacific and WCNA with a DXers signal!

The 1st broadcast alone had 50 reception reports via e-mail and nearly
200+ snail mail, mainly Japan / India / Indonesia / OZ / NZ, also also
WCNA despite coch RHC. We also made it to Europe at S-2 sans coch QRM and
long path to Chile, so far. All e-mail reports have been QSLd with an
E-QSL and cheked in detail. MP3 clips are welcomed, 1 minute of definite
info is enough to accompany a written report. Comments are greatly
welcome.

Your frequency suggestions are most welcome as well as reports. All E-QSLs
are in PDF have Date/Time/Freq/TX power/QTH and a serial NO: and records
held for any award checks.

No IRCs are needed.

slight CCI from RHC (PCJ may change freq. for the next 2 test BC ... check
<www.pcjmedia.com>
for more info), otherwise an enjoyable log Mr. Perron played "On A
Wonderful Day Like Today" (a song he recorded in Tokyo with the NHK Big
Band) & some requests (song from the Bollywood movie "Kashmir Ki Kali" +
"The Olive Tree", "Ma, He's Making Eyes At Me", & "Raindrops"), he also
mentioned getting a very good response from the 1st test & read listener's
names (incl. Tony Asher in Indo, Ian Baxter in OZ, Jonathan Short in
China, Bruce Portzer in Washington state), played a portion of a 16"
transcription disc recording of Eddie Startz announcing on the original
PCJ in May, 1931 & gave both email
<pcjqsl @ pcjmedia.com>
& snail mail (PCJ Radio International, Attention Station 84, #47, Lane 31
Sanmin Road, Section 1, New Taipei, Taiwan 220070, ROC) addresses for
reports. Closed with Happy Station theme & maybe IS/tuning signal.

UKRAINE As I expected, with the beginning of the era of digital
broadcasting in Ukraine should not be hard optmistichnym. Promised to
launch DRM Radio Day May 7 (Soviet tradition timing of a nove to some
holidays) in Izmail on 1404 kHz failed.

In the latest issue of "Radiopanoramy" Vadim Alexeev interviewed the
Director of the Odessa radio television transmitting center, which now has
hinted at following a convenient PR date - the day of Ukrainian
constitution on June 28.

I doubt again - Finance sing love songs ... Typically, the purpose of the
PR - and bosses to report publicly on the great work done by the
installation and commissioning of transmission equipment purchased new,
and whether someone in the future to listen to these digital transmissions
except the radio specialists - another matter.

The people can immediately start searching for digital receivers on the
market?

A short test on 1404 kHz DRM is known to have taken place twice. So that
is what is reported to the authorities - the coveted digital broadcasting
standard DRM appeared in Ukraine. If only the date with a beautiful run in
continuous operation and with the rest of luck ...

Re: UNID DRM 7320 kHz. BBCWS DRM ID Code 'E1C249'. Die Babcock Leute haben
wohl einen neuen Encoder bei Transradio Berlin gekauft, und testen jetzt?

Die Leute in Woofferton {frueher Skelton/Rampisham auch} testen ja gerne
on the air, meist vormittags 7-12 Londoner Zeit, wie viele Jahre vorher
auch in AM Modus.

Da gibt es ja manche, die den DRM Fabrikcode von Transradio Encoder nie in
den vergangenen Jahren geaendert haben, siehe RadioCom Tiganesti
Rumaenien.

VIETNAM 12019.213 at 1213- UT on June 2. Voice of Vietnam May 23. Very
strong signal with SoEaAsian sounding language with talk by YL. Over 5 or
10 minutes could not make out any IDs. Strange to be so far off frequency.
Perfect modulation. Any ideas? Answered my own question at 13:30 UT with
Voice of Vietnam sign-on in English. Might have drifted slightly to
12019.224 kHz. Parallel is also off-frequency on 9839.886 kHz but
suffering from a lot of splatter from RTM Sarawak on 9835 kHz.
