BOLIVIA 5952.44 on July 9 at 0056 UT, R. Pio Doce is quite audible in
dialog, probably Spanish.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld July 9)

Re Bolivia 5952+, noted on footprint 5952.440 kHz im MUMBLED Spanish, much
weaker speaker than average Cuban or Mexican Spanish locutors
pronunciation, in peaks S=8-9 at 0035 UT July 6.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 6)

6154.9 on July 9 at 0100 UT, YL talk seems Spanish, from Radio Fides,
much weaker than 6134.8 kHz, R. Santa Cruz. I see reports of both as on
6155.000 and 6135.000 kHz, trailing or defaulting zeroes being allowed to
misimply that they are really on exact frequencies, never the case. Study
the concept of "significant digits" and override your logging program or
imprecise frequency display.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld July 9)

4957.955 kHz Have always heard only a carrier but no audio at all, by
Thomas Nilsson in Sweden often heard. R Trópico. Today only the carrier
received also.

R Pío XII - Emisora Pio Doce, Siglo XX, Llallagua, Potosí, at 0250 UT on
exact 5952.443 kHz.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 11)

BOLIVIA 5952.45 July 4, 2153, Emisora Pio Doce, quite good this early.
Signed off sometime between 2208 and 2256 UT this evening. Also noted with
strong signal on July 5 from 2256 UT.

6154.92 on July 1 at 2357 UT, Radio Fides noted as always with strong
signal. ID at 0000 UT.
(Thomas Nilsson-SWE, SW Bulletin July 7 via dxld)

BOLIVIA [UNIDENTIFIED] 4957.98, Jul 7 0005. I also checked for this
station this morning between 4957 and 4960 kHz. There is a carrier with
sidebands but without any audio. Also checked recordings from July 5 & 6.
The same carrier on exactly the same frequency can be noticed from first
recording at 2153 until final recording at 0304 UT. But unfortunately no
sign of any audio from R Tropico here.

Further checks from this morning, July 8, the carrier with low hum and the
same sidebands (+100/-100 Hz) audible from first check at 2153 UT when
very weak until last check at 0304 UT, then quite strong. But no audio at
all. As the signal improved gradually might indicate a signal from LA.
(Thomas Nilsson-SWE, SW Bulletin July 7 direct and via dxld)

Noted a S=6 carrier here on July 11 at 0240 UT on footprint 4957.955 kHz,

BRAZIL 4915 on July 4 at 0052 UT, JBA carrier here, could be the other

Hi, this morning (July 4 at 0400 UT) I heard Radio Difusora de Macapá on
4915 kHz with frequent time checks like "... en Macapá". Exact frequency:
4914.95 kHz.
(Karel Honzik-CZE, hcdx July 4)

Re Brazil 4915, nothing heard on this 'empty' channel here in EUR at 0020
UT July 6.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 6)

BRAZIL 4865.027 June 27, 0005, R Verdes Florestas back again from June
25 after being absent a few days. Also mostly religious programs all
nights.

4914.95 July 4, 0001, Radio Difusora Macapa with a nice ID. Alone on the
frequency at this time and still there at 0200 UT. Also heard on July 5 at
the same time but does not seem to be there on a regular basis.

4915 July 3, 2305, R Daqui usually very strong and pressing down Macapa.
Daqui signs off earlier than before, sometime between 2315 and 2359 UT. On
July 3 still on at 0026 UT when I checked again and on July 5, good signal
at 2312 UT but had signed off when checked at 2356 UT.

6104.96 June 22, -2200* UT. R Cultura Filadelfia can't decide if the
frequency should be above or below 6105 kHz. Weak signal this day. //

Some Brazilians with S=5-6 signal strength logged this morning July 11 in
0230-0300 UT slot. Not very strong, but the soft Brazilian Portuguese
language identified.

4914.935 "Radio Daqui, - usually very strong and pressing down Macapá"
but only up to 2400 UT, so early today at 0252 UT July 11 determines the
other station Radio Difusora Macapá, Macapá, Amapá AP.

5014.952 Radio Cultura, Cuiabá, MT "Voz da Libertaçã" around 0257 UT, S=6
very thiny signal on July 11.

4774.980 probably Radio Congonhas, Congonhas, MG, male announcer in
Brazilian Portuguese around 0302 UT July 11.

4885.016 At 0325 UT on July 11. Simply only Portuguese talk to
understand, because a powerful European? UTE transmitter covered both?
Brazilians, two stations underneath to choose from:
Radio Clube do Pará, Belém, PA or
Radio Dif. Acreana, Rio Branco, AC

4824.938 Two Brazilians to choose from, according to broadcasting time
should it be
R Canção Nova, Cachoeira Paulista, SP,
but this religious stn does not fit the secular genre, including possibly
R Educadora de Bragança, PA, possible at 0315 UT on July 11.

BRAZIL [and non] Just downloaded the latest HFCC A-13 schedule from
zipped folder at <http://www.hfcc.org>
and noted that some of the other reference files in the folder have also
been updated this June: broadcasters and sites. Glancing thru those, I see
numerous entries for Brazilian SW stations and sites, each with their own
unique abbr! Yet none of these ever appear in HFCC schedules, to their own
detriment. Sign of progress? No, checking last year's files, they were
already there too, so never really used, or used long ago and still on the
list? There are also lots of other LA entries, and elsewhere surely
defunct.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld June 28)

CANADA [NEWFOUNDLAND] 6159.966 July 7, 0232, "This is CBC Radio" and
thus most likely CKZN with a little unstable and trembling signal.
(Thomas Nilsson-SWE, SW Bulletin July 7 via dxld)

CKZU Vancouver has been the one on the low side, and CKZN Newfoundland
much on the high side like 6160.8 kHz. Must check this out. 0232 UT is of
course rather early for Vancouver.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld)

Also checked 6159.966 kHz, from this morning, July 8, at 0300 UT. "CBC
News" after time signal. No station at all detectable on 6160.8 kHz.
Disturbed by Radio Rossii Murmansk Monchegorsk on exactly 6160 kHz.
(Thomas Nilsson-SWE, SW Bulletin July 7 via dxld)

Thomas, Tnx. Apparently CKZN is back (almost) on-frequency. Tough here
against bigsig from Cuba on 6165 kHz unless I'm up after 0700 UT (or Cuba
fails). Best time to catch local ID info from CBC is right after the news
:05 when they usually give local / provincial weather.
(Glenn, via dxld)

6159.96 approx., July 9 at 0050 UT, poor signal in English, surely CKZN
back on (near) frequency after months circa 6160.8 kHz producing a big het
with CKZU and anyone else. Before sunset here, and way before sunset in
Vancouver, surely this one is CKZN, as first noted by Thomas Nilsson,
Sweden, July 7 at 0232 UT and July 8 at 0300 UT with CBC IDs and news on
6159.966 kHz both times, but "a little unstable and trembling".

I needed to get this before 0100-0700 UT when bigsig from Cuba blox on
6165 kHz (unless it fails). Best time to get local info on CBC is the
weather about :05 after the news, but altho RHC was late tonight, still
off at 0103 UT, it was on by 0105 and modulating before 0106 UT.

CKZU had also stayed slightly on the lo side of 6160 kHz, so when both are
mixing later in the night, it will be interesting to compare how far apart
they be now. SAH sure beats an AH.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld / hcdx July 9)

Yes, I also had my doubts on Vancouver at this hour too ... long distance
EUR to Vancouver under northern Whitesun condition...

This morning July 10 at 0535-0600 UT I heard the two Canadians on remote
units in US.

6159.969 CKZN St. Johns, Newfoundland - "CBC Radio One" program stronger
on the east coast in Massachusetts and Florida.

6159.982 CKZU Vancouver - more power on the west coast at Mojave Desert
CA, and most powerful close-by Vancouver at Bainbridge Isl. WA
         state remote installation.

CHINA {mainland jamming} 17560 After some long absence, I heard two
FIREDRAKE signals last night, when checked remote SDR unit in donwunder
Pacific. The first FIREDRAKE music jammer - since months - heard here
today July 7 at 0015 UT. Noted against VoA Mandarin service from Tinang-
PHL. Jammer at S=9+20dB level in downunder remote SDR unit. Similar
strength level like regular CRI Beijing 500 kW unit on 17495 kHz at 00-01
UT.

15385 VOA Chinese from Tinang-PHL was disturbed by multi echo talk
jamming of CNR1 type at 0032 UT July, S=8-9 signal in Australia, ... and
UNDERNEATH additionally heard a weaker FIREDRAKE music jammer.

15565 VOA Mandarin sce via Udorn Thani-THA covered by CNR1 multi echo
'spoken word' jamming only, at 0038 UT S=8 in Brisbane.

21575 CNR1 jamming, of spoken word jamming against RFA Tibetan noted at
0645, July 7, S=9+5dB level even on backlobe in Europe. Similar jamming on
21690 kHz against RFA Mandarin relay from Al Dhannya-UAE S=9+5dB at 0648
UT, and 17510 kHz from Dushanbe-TJK, S=8 only in Europe.

6110 VoA Mandarin and mainland FIREDRAKE + spoken word CNR1 jamming noted
at 1439 UT July 7, scheduled Tinang-PHL site at 1300-1500 UT daily.

CONGO 6115 On July 1 at -1820* UT, Radio Congo with sign off a little
earlier than normal (1828-1830 UT), strong signal.
(Thomas Nilsson-SWE, SW Bulletin July 7 via dxld)

CUBA 17705 RHC La Habana's Spanish service discovered and noted
surprisingly in dowunder Pacific at 0000-0100 UT slot.

S=6-7 signal strength, - similar level like AWR KDSA Guam's Burmese
service on 17650 kHz and Mandarin service on 17880 kHz at same time.

RHC La Habana // 15230 S=4-5 weak, 11760 S=7 signals.

GERMANY 15785 Hamburger Lokalradio tests scheduled Sunday July 7
with 1 kW from Goehren: hardly expected to pick it up in deep North
America, especially with pitiful propagation conditions, but try anyway
since it's including WORLD OF RADIO. Hope it's better heard closer to
Europe. Yes, absolutely nothing audible at 1409, 1428 or 1458 UT.
Even full-power stations from Europe on 19m are inaudible, such as Greece
15630/15650 kHz; only signals are weak ones from Asia and Cuba.

Next chance is 1800-2000 UT on 15785-CUSB, including WOR at 1830 UT.

In the British DX Club, Alan Pennington confirms the test was running and
audible at 0745 amid WOR #1675 (instead of latest #1676):

"Fair clear reception of Hamburger Lokalradio on 15785 kHz this morning on
just my Sony 7600GR portable with telescopic here in Lancashire. Tune-in
at 0745 UT with Glenn Hauser's World of Radio No. 1675. English ID of test
requesting reports at 0759 UT with addresses, then programme in German
about North Korea(?). Slow fading with good strong peaks, so SINPO 35433.
Alan Pennington, Longton, Preston".

The first test block had been planned for 06-08 UT last week, when tech
problems intervened, but now moved one hour later to 07-09 UT, in order to
avoid CRI, Xi'an on 15785 kHz until 0657 UT; thus WOR also an hour later
than anticipated, at 0730 UT.

GREECE Greece public radio.
News yesterday from Greece of physical attempts by the government to shut
down the actual ERT transmitters, and citizens' action in some communities
against them. This is from the website "ERT Open" by the ERT occupiers
(and the English is a little wobbly. I don't think it relates to the SW
service, but no doubt that will come, too.

CHRONICLING THE GREEK GOVERNMENT'S SHUTDOWN OF ERT
Mon Jun 17, 2013 at 01:22 AM PDT
By Michael_Nevradakis Reporting from Athens

The sudden announcement by the Greek government last Tuesday that it was
shutting down national public broadcaster ERT set off a new wave of
protests and stirred a new political crisis in Greece. This detailed
article chronicles the shutdown of ERT, the protests which have followed,
the unprecedented discussion of social and political issues that the
shutdown of ERT has spurred, and the actions of an increasingly
authoritarian political regime in Greece.

Great article on the subject by Michel Nevradakis, whom I have known for a
long time, when I used to contribute to his web site
<http://www.media.net.gr/>

BTW in recent days the Greek press has been circulating stories that the
government has put forward the proposal for the new public broadcasting
entity NERIT as follows:

2 national television networks:
News and Information channel (replacing NET),
Entertainment channel (replacing ET3),
additionally there will be a satellite channel available outside of Greece
(replacing ERT World) 4 national radio networks:

News and information station
Sports station (replacing ERA Sport),
Radio station for Greeks abroad
(possibly replacing ERA 5, The Voice of Greece),
Cultural radio station (replacing ERA Trito programma),
additionally regional radio networks will be created for Macedonia,
Thrace and Aigaio respectively.

[later] In the meantime, starting this morning the new and official
public radio/TV entity started television broadcasts. NERIT has started
broadcasting the following ID card over the HD transmitters in Athens and
Thessaloniki:

With Georgia_Vasiliadou transitional ERT. From factorx on 11 July 2013

Explaining his show transitional body Neritan yesterday gave the
government through the deputy minister responsible public broadcasting P.
Kapsi.

The logic of ex residing without authorization, both economic and forced
termination and radio and multimedia are absent at present and manage the
former chief executive, Gikas Manali, the government chose to transmit
signal from a private studio with logo SDR (Greek Public Television)
initials, and then after 9 pm lost its distinctive "E" to stay only "SF"
figourarontas top right of the screen when viewing the Greek black and
white film "The lady mayor" with Georgia Vasiliadou.

Transmission is via DIGEA the frequencies 48 and 52 of the former NET.
More specifically, the signal is encoded digitally on premises Digea and
becomes the multiplex - along with the signals of the House of RIK Sat,
the Deutsche Welle and the BBC World that emit - and go as a signal. From
Digea the signal goes to OTE and he sends the signals to a digital
transmitter to broadcast and to where a digital television, mainly in
Attica and Thessaloniki.

The program includes transitional broadcast movies and shows from file ERT
("Backstage", "Monogram" etc.), which is accessible from the government,
from the documentary record of the House, 15 films made available by the
Greek Centre cinema, film private library file (Papandreou) and
information from agencies that would run initially with "crawl" at the
bottom of the television screen.

In coming days, maybe after tomorrow Friday, the government will publish
job vacancies in all specialties in order to pass the second phase of the
transition plan.

Undersecretary for Public Broadcasting P.Kapsis states that "the door to
dialogue with employees remain open, but must apply the judgment of the
CoE," adding that then after the completion of the tender process with the
notice, to be recruited journalists two-month contracts. Fact has
conditioned the evacuation of Radiomegarou and other facilities of ERT in
Greece, in order to complete the number of 2,000 employees in the
meantime.

"I was hoping we could find a consensual solution to go to the studio of
ERT and be truly public television in every sense of the word. Was not
possible "says P.Kapsis stating that" the government is hostage to trade
unionists and occupiers who remain in Radiomegaro preventing both process
the delivery of ERT and expedite the process of shaping Neritan. "

He says that because ERT is established by statute, no need to ask
permission from the ESR emission which, however, was informed by the
government. Meanwhile on 17/7 arrives in Greece delegation EBU, to meet
with Deputy Public Broadcasting, Pantelis Kapsis and the special
administrator liquidator ERT Gikas Manali.

What support workers.

For violations of the law and "coup progressing to piracy" refer workers
and pose a series of questions: "How do the two bodies, Digea and OTE
broadcast station without authorization?" And "Who Pays the two private
operators, technicians and directors brought to work and what kind of
contracts? "wondering at the same time invoking the law of 2011 for
clarity, stating that" any contract or agreement is not valid if they have
not previously been posted on the Internet ". In yesterday's press
conference workers stressed that "as a network provider, the company
appears EDT which has not been recognized as such by EETT and raise a
question of misconduct for Independent Authority".

Citing views Constitutionalists, employees argue that government energy
does not correspond to the Council of State "where the emission of SDRs is
not aimed at restoring function radio, web and other functions of the
public body as provided by the Constitution and laws". They also said that
it would make moves like:

Application to the Council of State to convene the Commission suspended
due to non- compliance of the government with the previous decision,
filing a lawsuit against those responsible for violation of legislation on
digital frequencies nullification redundancy judicial appeal suspension of
the SDR of frequencies of ERT and complaint to Labour Inspectorate for
non-declaration of staff from the SDR. The legal adviser of ERT Vasilis
Costopoulos pointed out that signing contracts DIMINI transition operator
by workers ERT means relinquishing their labor rights.

Employees ERT stressed that integrated proposal submitted to the
appropriate Secretary for continued operation of ERT "does not burden the
state budget, while if implemented government decision shows just
compensation cost 120 million euro, increasing significantly the
compensation clauses for conventions and vacations. " Trade Unions (POESY,
POEPTYM and POSPERT) decided 5 hour stop work on private channels, today
from 1-3 pm

NBC Bougainville.
{even frequency, S=7 signal observed on remote SDR unit in downunder
Australia, at 1414 UT July 7, wb.}

3344.86 RRI Ternate. Will this become more regular now? Heard for three
days this month. July 4 tuned in at 1210 UT to hear Jakarta news relay in
progress via Makassar, Palangkaraya and Ternate; ending with patriotic
song "Bagimu Negeri"; 1226 UT no longer //; played RRI song I have never
heard before followed with ID: "Radio Republik Indonesia Ternate"; still
on at tune out at 1313 UT; poor-fair.

{3344.875  noted footprint at S=5 on July 7 at 1417 UT, wb.}

4749.96 RRI Makassar. Status of English programming - Sorry to say it
looks as if they have dropped English programming on Tuesday; from August
2012 to April 2013 had been enjoying Kang Guru Indonesia (KGI) programs in
English from about 1230 to 1300 UT.

Then in April, KGI was dropped in favor of a shorter, locally produced
English show ("information program"), but now after about 3 weeks even
that seems to have been cancelled. Is always possible they have changed
the schedule, but if so I have not been able to find them. Too bad as they
were very entertaining. Not often I write to a station, but will do so
requesting they re-instate KGI or their "information program".

Re: UNID 3345 kHz. is NBC Northern (PNG). Thanks very much to Mauno Ritola
(Finland) for the confirmation. I was indeed hearing the reactivation of
NBC Northern (PNG) today.

He listened via a remote Perseus SDR located at Brisbane, Austalia.
Greatly appreciate his assistance to verify my suspicion!

"Checking via Brisbane remote rx I could hear NBC Northern, but no other
station and had to wait until 2027, when RRI Ternate signed on. A bit
later it occurred me to try also at my own QTH and I could find the same
carriers, Popondetta very weak, being already in daylight. Looks like they
were on 3344.873 [RRI Ternate] and 3345.032 kHz. [NBC Northern].

73, Mauno Ritola-FIN, July 7"

So unless RRI Ternate happens to be off the air, there will be little
chance of my actually enjoying NBC Northern, the Voice of Oro, through the
RRI Ternate QRM and also the het.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews / dxld July 7)

UNIDENTIFIED 3345. July 7, at 1208 UT, found RRI Ternate on about 3344.9
kHz with the Jakarta news relay; clearly // to both RRI Makassar and RRI
Palangkaraya; for the first time this month, since I have been daily
monitoring RRI Ternate's routine broadcasting now, heard a definite new
het; unable to make out any other station present; by 1253 UT positive
signal from two stations mixing here; slightly off frequency from each
other and producing a prominent heterodyne. The UNID spoiled the usually
decent reception of RRI Ternate!

Suspect possible re-activation of NBC Northern, the Voice of Oro (PNG). If
so, they picked a bad time to come back on again, as RRI Ternate has
considerably better reception; het was still on at my tune out of 1407 UT.
My last log of NBC Northern here (March 8) had them still on the air at
1503 UT.

Due to the strong het and the mixing of both stations, was unable to
accurately measure either frequency. Perhaps a DXer in Asia/Pacific with a
Perseus SDR can "see" the two different frequencies? Thanks for any
possible help with this!

6165 Thazin Radio. June 28 checking their new schedule but clearly not
broadcasting; 1230 UT found strong CNR6 with a very weak VOV-4 underneath
playing some indigenous music, which might confuse people into thinking
they are hearing Myanmar; at 1400 UT Vietnam signed off (matching their
schedule), leaving CNR6 in the clear, with no trace of another station;
checked again at 1430 UT looking for Myanmar's English segment, but again
only CNR6.
{CNR6 strong ahead at 1352 UT July 7, wb.}

7200.06 Myanmar Radio, at 1431* UT on June 28. Running long past their
normal sign off time; played their indigenous theme music before going
off. As Wolfy has reported recently, their audio for a long time now had
been anywhere from terribly distorted to mildly garbled; am still hearing
the lower spur.

7200.06 Myanmar Radio, tuned out at 1440 UT on July 1. Running past their
former sign off time; played their indigenous theme music at 1430 UT;
seemed to go into their distance learning service with a lecture in
vernacular; poor with heavy ham QRM.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3204.96 NBC Sandaun, random listening from 1240 to
1411* UT, June 30. In Tok Pisin/Pidgin; pop songs as well as indigenous
music; some religious programs (was Sunday); 1401 UT National Anthem and
expected them to go off the air as usual, but they continued on for a
while.
{3204.969 footprint at 1405 UT July 7, S=7 signal in remote unit in

3204.96 NBC Sandaun. Better than usual reception July 1. In Tok
Pisin/Pidgin and some English; at 1246 UT asking listeners to call in with
the answer to "After how many years would you celebrate your silver
anniversary?"; one caller said "100 years!"; "News Roundup" in English
ended at 1307 UT followed by commercial announcements; played pop songs
(Pacific Island songs and pop songs - "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow"
by Fleetwood Mac, etc.). Enjoyable!

3260 NBC Madang, at 1212:31* UT on June 29. Broadcasting again after
being off the air yesterday; mentioned "Saturday night"; in Tok
Pisin/Pidgin; suddenly off by timer. By far the strongest PNG heard today.

3325  NBC Bougainville. Nice to find them regularly broadcasting again;
poor reception and underneath RRI Palangkaraya; June 28 from 1238 to 1250
UT had a brief opening (was not heard at all before that!)

with the best reception; pop Pacific Island song and mostly talking; 1302
UT distinctive NBC bird calls and into the news; suddenly off at 1303* UT,
which clearly is when their timer to set to turn off the tx (June 26 and
27 also 1303* UT).

than yesterday; DJ with dedications/requests of pop sings; in Tok
Pisin/Pidgin; heard as early as 1217 UT; poor and mixing with RRI
Palangkaraya; suddenly off by timer. My local sunrise was at 1250 UT.

3325 NBC Bougainville. June 30 clearly off the air today. Will they
return tomorrow? 3325 kHz, NBC Bougainville. Indeed they did return on
July 1 after being off the air yesterday; 1253 UT playing pop songs; poor
and mixing with RRI Palangkaraya.

3385 NBC East New Britain, at 1200:34* UT June 29. Usual series of
advertisements in both English and Tok Pisin/Pidgin; DJ in Tok
Pisin/Pidgin with pop songs; suddenly off by timer.

3385 NBC East New Britain, at 1100 UT on July 1, English ads, music,

3325 kHz Buka and 3365 kHz Milne Bay.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3324.996 July 6, at 1915 UT, NBC Bougainville
(tentative) with talk and muisc of the style Papuan stations use,
definitely not sounding like any RRI program. S6 signal. Unfortunately I
was busy with other things and was on first at 1913 UT this evening. I
sent the recording to Ron Howard and he replied this morning:

"Very nice Thomas!! It does sound to me like Tok Pisin/Pidgin. Compare it
with my attached recording from today. July 6 was a rare day for me; no
RRI not on at all till 1220 UT (very late starting), so I had NBC
Bougainville in the clear. Poor reception, but clear (just like yours).
Note the logs below. If NBC was strong via an Australian remote, then is
it propagationally possible for you to hear PNG as I think you did???
Maybe you could tune in a little earlier for their sign on
(about 1907 UT)? Best regards, Ron"

3364.98 July 6, at 1910 UT, Most likely R Milne Bay showing up first time
for the season. Strong enough to produce weak audio.

seconds too long and missed the Chaski cutoff, already gone when I retuned
at 0105. But I am confident that it would have been at 0104:24.75 or so,
5.25 seconds later than yesterday, which may also be interpolated after
the next check.

USA/U.K./LUXEMBOURG/GERMANY/NATO Europeanwide
AFN celebrates the 70th anniversary on on 4th July.

I have just found in the radio forum a reference to the 70 year old
anniversary of the AFN.

In the series "AFN Wide OPEN" a 30 minute movie on the history of the AFN
is shown.

A quick featured movie - the target audience is known quite young now -
with many historical film documents, and occasionally some technical
aspects.

Have fun watching that movie - hard to believe it's been so long again

USA 17775 KVOH - Voice of Hope, Los Angeles, would like to thank all
those who responded to last Saturday's test broadcast. It was unfortunate
that the time chosen for the test happened to coincide with a geomagnetic
storm, but in spite of that, reports have so far been received from 13
U.S. states, as well as from Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil,
Argentina and Indonesia.

The station will be testing again tomorrow, Sunday 7th, from 1700-1900 UTC
(1-3pm Eastern). As before, the frequency is 17775 kHz, with 50 kW on a
beam of 100 degrees (towards Cuba). The same test program will be used as
last week, with announcements in English and Spanish, which hopefully will
be easier to copy since atmospheric conditions are better this weekend.
Reports will be very much appreciated to either
<QSL @ KVOH.net>
or P.O. Box 102,
Los Angeles, CA 90078, USA.

If reporting by email, please attach a short mp3 recording of your
reception if possible. If reporting by mail and requesting a QSL, please
enclose return postage. In all reports, please be sure to describe your
receiver and antenna used. Reception comparisons using handheld portable
radios with telescopic antennas (outdoors) will be especially helpful.

KVOH currently expects to be able to launch a preliminary 2-hour daily
schedule around the end of this month (July), and will build from there.
(Ray Robinson-USA, <rrobinson @ kvoh.net> DXplorer via Herkimer July 6)

17775, June 29 at 1902 UT, KVOH reactivated with advance-publicized 2-
hour test broadcast this date only: At first I was out & about using only
the DX-375 I keep in the car; fair reception, deep fades on rather
insensitive radio with whip only. Full ID in English about the tests,
asking for reports. As it turned out, this was not a good day to carry out
such a test. The K index was 3 at 18, and went up to 4 by 21 UT; and back
at 06 UT it had hit 7! "Geomagnetic storms reaching the G3 level occurred"
in the past 24 hours, says WWV. Besides that, 16m band propagation has
generally been pitiful for weeks in the summer doldrums. Yet it's a stand-
out signal at this time of day when hardly anyone else in the Hemisphere
is interested in even trying to transmit on this band.

The revived KVOH is merely resuming the frequency originally occupied for
years, aimed eastward in the daytime only. It's again also announcing the
other registered frequency, 9975 kHz, which had not really been used for a
lot longer than the last years on 17775 kHz only. Do they plan to use it
now? Back on home rig FRG-7 at 1926 UT, deep fades remain, and even at
peaks, it's not enough to overcome the prevailing noise level. The *only*
other signal on band is open carrier on 17530 kHz, 250 kW Greenville
warming up for an hour in French aimed east, which is roughly at
equivalent level, even tho KVOH is 50 kW aimed 100 degrees (again, still,
right?), not too far off from here.

At 1926 UT there's another English test ID, and then Spanish, with slogans
such as "Voz de vida para las Americas", "La Voz Esperanza" (no de la
audible), with Apartado 102, Los Angeles CA 90078 or <mail @ kvoh.net>
addresses, the latter requiring spelling-out in Spanish. 1929 UT same in
English, and "when you care enough to listen to the very best". Then some
gospel music with a reggae beat. Another check at 2000, paying attention
to the transmission quality: certainly have fixed the ailing old
transmitter: now the modulation is OK and the carrier stable.

Sometimes the KVOH announcements are momentarily under-modulated, but I
assume a lapse in the input level. No spurs heard, but it may require a
stronger perhaps Es-boosted opening to detect them if they have not been
removed. You may recall that I reported them numerous times in 2007, 2008,
2009 and 2010, varying slightly around 17630 and 17920 kHz, extremely
distorted but matchable to the fundamental audio. At 2000 UT, 17775 kHz is
slightly stronger than Cuba 17720 kHz which is slightly stronger than VOA
17530 kHz.

2043 UT more gospel music, as VOA is now finished and its only companion
on the band is Cuba 17720 kHz which is still somewhat weaker, but intended
for Europe and presumably off the side to here. Other DXLD yg members were
checking this out: barely made it to eastern USA or not at all, barely to
S America or not at all, and to British Columbia was apparently about like
I heard it, despite being off-beam, but not surprising at a good single-
hop distance, which may have been Es-enhanced. Testing on more days for
more than two hours will be required for a better evaluation.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld July 3)

very deep fades. Thanks to John Herkimer for the tip.

"Wenn sich junge Menschen zu Veranstaltungen wie "Interactive Cologne:

Gattung Mensch deshalb nicht. Etwas abgedrehte Tueftler und Bastler,
mitunter Sonderlinge, aber auch sehr an Kommunikation und Innovation
interessiert, die gibt es schon seit vielen Jahrzehnten. Statt schraeger
