TONY'S 10 METRE BAND REPORT - August 22, 2013

August 22, 2013

Another really odd week. Very little activity at all, all week and Saturday. Then Sunday was a monster with loads of contacts and DX.
No single main DX till Friday when CV5A (Special call sign of Radiogrupo Sur used for the activation of Isla de Flores, (IOTA SA-030) Uruguay) splashed in, top for three days.

G4CJC (me) worked just F6CEE and PT9IR, IS0MVE, IZ0KBA and M6DRS on PSK31 in the week.
Saturday Steve, M0STC, said, “The band seems completely dead - absolutely nothing ! At least when I was listening.”
Me Too. The Sunday marginally better.
Worked EA2DHF 5/9 (PSK31), heard IT9BLB 5/9 (RTTY), LA6FJA 5/9 (RTTY) and SM7BHM 5/9 (RTTY). Steve says, “Similar to last week with 4X6TU, the NCDXF beacon ZS6DN was clearly audible in the late afternoon, but there didn't seem to be anyone about. I guess there just aren't that many radio amateurs in southern Africa? Incidentally, it would be interesting to be able to monitor the NCDXF beacons on 28200kHz 24 hours a day and record the results graphically. I wonder if anyone here does that, and if so what software do they use?”
I’m not sure what the “results” would be, signal strength, distance or what. I use DXMonitor which monitors the DX spots 24/7. Easy to sort out beacons with that. Not too many people report hearing beacons and when they do on the DX spots they generally get abuse(??).
Another Steve, VK3MEG, worked UR3CTB 4/4 on Wednesday.
Good on yer, send in any more you hear or work, any mode.

Sun: 7 sunspot clusters with the possibility of a CME on 23 rd this week.
A small comet plunged into the sun on August 20th. Just before it arrived, the sun expelled a magnificent full-halo CME.

Stoke City, lost away to Liverpool 1 – 0, and Stoke missed a penalty which would have given us a draw.! Crystal Palace this Saturday, at the Brit, I’ll be there.
The final Ashes test has just started. Tried for a ticket but sold out.
