AUSTRALIA THE WINTER DAYTIME DX SURVEY By Rob Wagner VK3BVW.

The list below represents work over the last five weeks monitoring the 49,
41 and 31mb in the period 0100 to 0400 UT. We are just starting to come
out of the depth of winter. The shortest day passed a month ago and we see
gradually more daylight hours. Winter in south eastern Australia means
that daytime reception on 5.8 to 10 MHz has been possible, and can be
almost uninterrupted throughout the day. In the summertime, this type of
propagation is impossible!

But it's interesting to note that conditions on the bands are quickly
changing - there are fewer stations being heard now on 49 mb than there
were only a few weeks ago. As we head into longer daylight hours, already
some of the stations on this list are not appearing here on 49 and 41 mb
in the 0100-0400 time period, compared to only a month ago.

But still it's a very good list, to have noted all these frequencies
listed below at some point during the mid-day winter hours. 0100 to 0400
UT is 11 am to 2 pm local time in Melbourne). In summer, you hear
virtually nothing on these bands - except for the very occasional (and now
rare) freakish reception that can occasionally occur on 9 MHz. Propagation
from Europe, Mid East and Africa swings around from short to long path,
often with a dead spot in the middle of this time period. Asian stations
are short path and can prove more unreliable, often because of E Layer
propagation. Now that we are slowly coming out of deep winter, reception
conditions can be remarkably variable at times - quite unpredictable and
unreliable. This will be even more the case as we head into our Spring.

49 METRE BAND ...

While all this is unusual for DU, since it falls in primetime evening in
North America, could also be a useful band survey for us.

AUSTRALIA It's already August in Australia, and I am alarmed by the
absence of any Shepparton signals, normally inbooming here on 13 and 15
MHz, August 1 before and after 0500 UT:

zilch on 17750, 15515 (except uncovering KUWAIT, q.v.), 15415, 15240,
15160, 13630 kHz. Hope RA SW has not been suddenly abolished, and that
there's no earthquake, wildfire or flood again! Propagation is OK as I
catch NZ on 15720 kHz just before QSY to 11725 kHz (which has an anomaly
of its own, q.v.).

At 0515 UT still no RA, except on 12080 kHz a VP signal, which is probably
Brandon site as scheduled. Whew, next check 1155 UT, RA is back as usual
on Shep 12065, 9580, 6150, 6080 kHz. But why was it absent earlier?
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 1)

Re: Glenn Hauser logs July 31 - August 1, 2013.
At 0200-0225 UT Aug 2nd, RA SHP noted on remote Perseus network unit at
Brisbane-QSL:

15160 S=9+20 dB
15240 S=9+30
15415 S=8-9

and - I guess - in the dead zone at this location for 16 and 15 mb -
17750 S=6
17795 S=8
19000 S=7

BRN - and 9660 kHz S=8-9, + 12080 kHz S=9+10dB, both Brandon too,
latter co-channel IRIB Zahedan-IRAN underneath in Arabic and with National
Anthem played at 0230 UT.

11775 Overcomer Ministry, Nauen, Germany. A very rocky start to this
English transmission at s/on 2000 UT with multiple layers of Brother Stair
talking at the one time, while a high-pitched female singer bellowed out
over the top of him, stops and starts in audio, one-second loops (like an
old scratched LP records) - laughable really!! Appears to be an NF, July
18.
(Rob Wagner-AUS VK3BVW, ARDXC ADXNews direct and via dxld)

same: Very strong with English preacher 2054 UT over co/channel station,
talking about the day of destruction and offering "Visions of Destruction
of America" on cassette tape. Either recycling old lectures, or lagging
somewhat in the technology stakes! July 13.

BANGLADESH 4750.000 Bangladesh Betar program from Dhaka, local female
singer heard at 1637 UT Aug 3. S=8-9 signal downunder in Australia.

BOLIVIA 4716.68 R. Yura, San Antonio de Quijarro. Noted at 1048 UT with
lively music and announcements in what sounded like Quechua (not
Spanish!). Monitored on and off during the evening while scanning the rest
of the band and noted to finally fade/out around 1135 UT. Sometimes
announces as R. Yatun Ayllu. July 19.

4795.9 R. Lipez, Uyuni. Only heard the once so far this year at 0945 UT.
Mainly talk, then ID and news at 1000 UT. Noted to past 1100 UT with a
very weak signal during a rainstorm at Mount Evelyn! July 19.

BOLIVIA I heard some Spanish on 9624.930 kHz at 2323 UT here in Belgium.
Two female talks about Bolivia and Peru, following with music. After this
talks by male, signal was not strong, but the audio is good, there is also
splatter from 9620 kHz by REE Spain. This is not the first time that I
heard this station, but now the audio is on his best.

I hope someone heard this station better with any ID.

BRAZIL 4785 R. Caiari, Porto Velho. Re last month's query - Caiari is
definitely the one I can hear and ID at Mount Evelyn. I'm not sure that R.
Brasil Campinas is even on the air these days!! At 0930 UT on July 19 and
regularly on other occasions. Caiari can even hang around till past 1100
UT on some nights!

3375.1 UNIDENTIFIED Brazilian stn. Noted at 1033 UT at a very low signal
strength with music, but faded by 1040 UT. I suspect this is R. Municipal
and NOT R. Educadora, Brazil (as reported by another member last month)
but without an ID or any real identifiable programming, I'm reluctant to
say definitively that this was the one I heard. R. Municipal is regularly
monitored by U.S. DXers, but I haven't seen a logging anywhere for R.
Educadora in the last 12 months. Just because it's on a list somewhere
(e.g. WRTH) doesn't mean it's active! An ID is the only way to confirm
your monitoring. July 19.

CUBA RHC planning second tropical band frequency "In the near future,
when solar cycle 24 starts its downward slope, we may be adding a second
Radio Havana Cuba tropical band service, so that we can be on the air in
Spanish full time during the local evening hours, and add French, Kreyol
and English on the second transmitter with a similar high vertical
incidence angle antenna.

We will carefully monitor the behaviour of the night time maximum useable
frequency curve as solar cycle 24's activity drops after the peak months,
and when the MUF drops below 7 MHz we will be activating the second Radio
Havana Cuba tropical band frequency on the 60m band.

By the way, many years ago, Radio Rebelde did use a 90 metre tropical band
frequency, with a 5 kW transmitter on 3365 kHz, and this may be another
option to explore when solar activity drops to extremely low levels."

Re: Deutscher Seefunk via Monaco.
MCO 3AC Monaco Radio maritime TRANSMITTING station
(exterritorial? in France).

Staatsgebiet stehen uebrigens zwei UKW-Standorte (Monaco Jardin Exotique &
Monaco Port). "Monaco Mont Agel" oder "Monaco Fontbonne" ist streng
genommen Quatsch.

Sieht man auch hier:
<http://www.dxaktuell.de/montecarlo.jpg>

GERMANY [SAARGEBIET] LW 183 Abschaltung franzoesischer Sender Europe1

Europe1 have announced that their transmitter on 183 kHz will be off the
air from tomorrow Aug 1 at 2300 UT to Tuesday Aug 6 at 0200 UT.

The reason for this was not mentioned, but it may have something to do
with last year's collapse of an antenna mast, {and controlled blowing
another one last month...}

1179 kHz Hi everyone, Had a look at the latest issue of "Communications"
magazine.

On page 36 SHo reports "SR Antenna, Heusweiler, Germany. GG sp.". I guess
this means "Antenne Saar", the news station of Saarlaendischer Rundfunk.

Now, to my knowledge, Antenne Saar ceased using that channel in early May
of this year.

Being currently in Strasbourg, which means well within range of the
Heusweiler transmitter, I checked the frequency this morning and found it
to be used by SWR Info, the news station that was previously on 666, 828 &
1107 kHz.

Some rough direction finding shows that the transmission comes effectively
from Heusweiler.

Strangely enough SWR gave up their own MW channels some months ago but
remain available on one outside their coverage area. What's the logic
behind that?

I also checked the transmission against the DAB+ outlets of SWR and found
it to be more or less in sync with one of the two multiplexes that carry
that programme. So Heusweiler may well take the signal off the DAB+
network.

Regards, Remy.

the 40-m-Band; both have just made QSY from 7105 to 7200 kHz.

WORLD'S BIGGEST SW MODERNIZATION PROJECT UNDER EXECUTION IN TAIWAN

Ampegon has received the third part of an ongoing contract by RTI Radio
Taiwan International to upgrade two radio transmission sites in Taiwan. In
cooperation with the local partner Techway Engineering Ltd, Ampegon will
manufacture, install and commission a total of ten 300 kW DRM shortwave
transmitters and twelve rigid dipole broadcast antennas HR2/2/0.3 securing
low and efficient maintenance works. More at:

AMPEGON HAS BEEN CONTRACTED TO SUPPLY THE FULL TURNKEY SYSTEM

Turgi, Switzerland, July 18, 2013. Ampegon has received the third part of
an ongoing contract by RTI Radio Taiwan International to upgrade two radio
transmission sites in Taiwan. In cooperation with the local partner
Techway Engineering Ltd, Ampegon will manufacture, install and commission
a total of ten 300 kW DRM shortwave transmitters and twelve rigid dipole
broadcast antennas HR2/2/0.3 securing low and efficient maintenance works.

The transmitters are manufactured in Turgi, Switzerland while the antennas
are designed in and delivered from Schifferstadt, Germany. At the first
site near Taipeh four transmitters and two antennas will be installed, at
the second site six transmitters and ten antennas. The new infrastructure
is partially on air since May 2013 with two most modern transmitters and
antennas and planned to be completed in several steps until autumn 2014.

Chi-Ming Wang, Director Engineering at RTI, is extremely satisfied with
Ampegon as partner for the project: "Ampegon is very experienced and has
delivered shortwave transmitters for us thirty years ago that still work
to our full satisfaction. Ampegon offers a complete solution approach
including transmitters, antennas, control systems and DRM integration. In
addition Ampegon provides the best price/performance ratio".
Significant benefit for the customer is a reduction in energy consumption
by replacing the old equipment which leads to operation at higher
efficiency rates. Savings in other operational costs are reached by a
fully automated transmitter based on StationMaster Plus control system and
because of a decrease in the amount of spare parts due to the market
leading technology selected.

The challenges of this project are short delivery periods and the
management of local logistics including building and feeder line
modifications, while keeping existing old transmitters and antennas on
air.

This is the largest contract for Ampegon since execution of the name
change in November 2012. It means a significant factory load through 2014
for the locations Turgi and Schifferstadt. The project highlights that AM
/ DRM radio broadcasting keeps its important role in Asia and other areas
of the world.

Very interesting. Thanks, Alokesh. The focus for RTI with SW usage
from Taiwan sites will be primarily regional coverage only. A 2 x 2
curtain with reflector is no replacement for a 4 x 4 curtain array in
terms of distant targets. Although the Danshui site will retain their
existing hi gain curtain arrays, so it seems.

I wonder if RTI will get to broadcast with DRM in future with these new
transmitters? I asked the same thing of CRI some weeks ago, but no
response, other than that they said would make enquiries, unless since
answered on air of course?

path African such as the scheduled Nigeria. I had a sneaking suspicion
that something was not right here. So on July 20, I monitored Tunisia's

after s/off. Mystery solved although it would have been nice to hear

language spoken in Southern Morocco and Algeria. It is quite different to
Arabic and is not really an Arabic "dialect" as such. Apparently, male
speakers will be bilingual in Tachelhit and Arabic, while female speakers
tend to be monolingual using only Tachelhit. There is quite a difference
in the sound of the two languages, so you can easily pick the changeover
between the two programs on HCJB. To my ears, Tachelhit sounds softer and
much less guttural (less from the back of the throat) than Arabic. Solid
signal, July 18.

Brother Scare! He's back, and maybe for long hours overcoming the fill
programming which has been airing for a few months in the afternoons, such
as Ted Randall's QSO show, World of Radio, Amateur Radio Newsline and
Ted's favorite music trax? Total BSpan remains to be determined.

FCC finally updated their HF schedule, now dated July 11, at

<http://transition.fcc.gov/ib/sand/neg/hf_web/A13FCC02.TXT>

but it already showed 9930 kHz available as follows, allowing overlap with
"KHBN" on the other worldside in apparent assumption they won't QRM each
other. And here, WTWW is so strong that there is nothing from T8WH audible
underneath, but how about in the Pacific/Asia?

9930 0000 1300 KHBN 100 318 43,44 1234567 310313 271013

9930 1600 2400 KHBN 100 345 43-45 1234567 310313 271013

Getting back to BS, I find that 9930 kHz is running 5 seconds ahead of
WWCR 9980; not on before 1300 UT is WWRB 9370 kHZ, but after that he's on
*three* Tennessee 9 MHz stations at the same time, surely a huge waste of
overlapping coverage.

Retuned at 1330 UT, he's talking about his new outreach; no mention of
WTWW but I may have missed it just before then. Says he's on transmitters
in Romania, Bulgaria, such as 9700 kHz at 18-22 to Eu, 11850 kHz at 19-21
to Af, with 250 kW. Says he's on four US stations every day (?? I count
five: WWCR, WTWW, WWRB, WRMI, WBCQ). Says "today we agreed" to occupy by
tomorrow or the next day, all these frequencies from central Europe:
13810, 9655, 11775, 15390, 15620, 15205, 17750 kHz, for total of 13
frequencies, a number he dislikes. Cost of this is $100,000 to be paid in
advance so is phoning supporters to raise the amount ASAP. Mentions his
"good friend Michael over there, filling in for Walter", apparently
referring to his contacts at MBR. Some of the new frequencies he claims
will be 24 hours a day; others not just a few hours, but 7, 8, 9 or 10
hours a day [not per below sked]. Maranatha!

Now checking website <http://www.overcomerministry.org/>
with usual mixture of timezones including one which is not in effect
anywhere, wrong frequencies for WBCQ, WRMI, but some of this new stuff
included, with WTWW 9930 kHz shown for only two hours at 12-14 UT; however
I am still hearing him at 1430 UT, but by 1508 UT recheck it's open
carrier/dead air, until 'Unshackled' finally starts up at 1517 UT.

USA 15550-USB, on August 2 at 1401 UT, "Rock of Ages" theme on plucked
instrument, banjo? 1403 UT dead air and then gospel huxter starts. It's
WJHR, Milton FL, the vanity station for only one preacher whose name I
forget; wonder if he's dead like Gene Scott and Pastor Pete Peters, who
merit 24h/7d post-mortem broadcasts? Or BS who's still ante-mortem. This
one enjoys only 8 hours a day, so maybe not dead yet either.

WJHR has told FCC they are running 50 kW but experienced SWLs can't
believe it. Often inaudible or JBA here, but logged today with a
sufficient signal except for lack of any carrier, "incompatible USB", a
fact which is not shown in the FCC A-13 schedule. Suspicion is that "50
kW" is really the PEP, but can't believe even that much either. Maybe it's
a lot stronger around the 5-degree boresight toward CIRAF 4 eastern
Canada?

USA Monitoring Times is Closing - but Teak Publishing is NOT !

From Bob Grove, Publisher of Monitoring Times magazine:

"After 33 years of publishing the most informative and lauded magazine on
monitoring the radio spectrum, Judy and I are finally going to retire. We
are grateful for the dedicated efforts of our fine staff of writers for
the excellent work which has kept MT alive for all these years. While we
know the discontinuation of MT, with our December issue, will be a
disappointment to our readers and writers alike, we realize that a
combination of a down-turned economy, as well as the ready availability of
free listening and technical information on the Internet, has reduced
sales and subscriptions throughout the market place. I would like to thank
you personally for your knowledge, your dependability, and your
professionalism in making MT the publication that is most often referred
to in the radio monitoring hobby. It is a legacy that we have all
inherited."

And now from Gayle Van Horn, W4GVH, Frequency Manager and QSL Report
Editor:

After 25 years this month writing the QSL Report column, and 20 years as
the Frequency Manager of Monitoring Times, I have no plans to set aside my
dedication to the radio hobby or to the friends I have established during
time period. You have not seen the last of me, this blog or my active
twitter feeds or our publishing company - Teak Publishing. Larry and I are
working on some very interesting publication projects for not only the
military monitoring community "worldwide," but I have some things in the
works for the shortwave broadcast listening community as well. So please
stay tuned to this blog, and to Larry's Milcom Monitoring Post blog for
future announcements in the coming months. To all of you who contributed
to my 25 year writing career with MT, and all the great friends that I
have met and corresponded with I want to say thank you. Thank you for your
support, kind words, material and everything that contributed to some
amazing radio material published in the pages of Monitoring Times. This is
only a goodbye to MT at the end of this year, but if you are interested in
the military monitoring stay tuned to Larry's Milcom Monitoring Post and
Shortwave Central blog. I will continue to post on this blog, timely
shortwave material here and on my Twitter account.
