TONY'S 10 METRE BAND REPORT - October 3, 2013

23:03 Fernando Luiz de Souza 0 Comments

October 3, 2013

A much better week, so much so that the limit for inclusion in the list five contacts for weekdays and ten at the weekend.
is
Needless to say with the contest and good conditions there was lots of DX about, P49X (Aruba), LV6E (Argentina), 6V7X (Senegal) and many more.
I worked just 4 Russian stations on PSK31 owing to various family commitments. I have also made up a RFL vertical antenna. More on that when I’ve had time to test it.
Steve, VK2XV , was good enough to point out a typo (my fault, all though the editor could have spotted it) in Dave VK5MRD’s call in last weeks article. It has now been corrected and all is well.
Also Friday, Iain, MM0TFU, worked OD5ZZ 5/9, RA4PPM 5/7, 4S7AVR 5/5, A41KJ 5/9, EI3KD 5/5 (Backscatter), A61K 5/9, 3B8BAE 5/5, VO1CAL 5/9, WQ9A 5/9, NM9J (Ex-G3VNQ) 5/7, W6JRA 5/5, K7JA 5/9, W7OMJ/5/5, W7CI 5/7 and FP5AC 5/6. He also heard 9W2MZY 4/4.
In an excellent report he says, “Hi Tony, a first report from me on Friday 27 Sept. Just to let you know that 10m conditions are now entering the autumn/winter burst of activity. I had a day off work today and began listening to 10m around 1000Z. I could hear various far east stations, but all were fairly weak. I managed to snare 4S7AVR and 3B8BAE around lunchtime. Later I could hear a VO1 calling one of the middle eastern stations off the back of my beam, so turned the antenna to NA at 1330 and immediately worked VO1CAL. I worked quite a number of Americans, including some mobiles. Had to go out for a while, but when I came back I heard the K6FRC beacon in California at about 1810. Put out a few CQ calls and worked a handful of W6 and W7's. Interestingly, I could hear many low powered beacons, even as low as 750mW, but it seems that the general ham populace have not cottoned on yet that 10m is opening. This is a good time to be on 10, because if this propagation trend continues (as we all hope it will) it's going to be back to bedlam in a week or two, when everyone and their Granny is on the band.
Enjoy this happy hunting time, before all hell breaks loose!” I just must get my new antenna up ready for the Autumn peak.

Saturday Steve, M0STC heard, HZ1PS 4/5, EA8TC 5/9, LT0H 5/9, A45XR 5/9, LU1BJW 3/5, W4BQF 3/3, LV5V 5/7, J28NC 3/5, EF8U 5/9, RA6XV 5/9, CE3DNP 5/7, and worked ST2M 4/7.
He says, “A lot of RTTY contest activity on Saturday afternoon. This is just a selection of those heard. Beam still pointing south.”
Hafiz, 9W2TZW , worked YF1CRR 5/9 and heard 9W2GSG 5/5. “It seems that 10meter band is open and I managed to get a contact, even with my delta loop antenna just 5 feet from ground.”

That’s good going.
Last Wednesday Zaki, 9M2CJB op 9M2ZAK, worked JH2DBQ 599, SM6DER 599, US8UA 599, JA5UFD 599, OE5JLM 599, EA3NW 599 , LZ1XZ 599, SP7HKK 599 and IZ3NYG 599. In his own words, “All the contacts I got from a G5RV Jr, pretty awesome!!!”

Yes, indeed.
Rahman, 9W2ORB , worked: IK1MNJ 5/9, SV1JGX 5/7, IK3ERN 5/9, IK4JTK 5/9, I0KNQ 5/9 and LZ2FU 5/9 and heard: VU2XO 5/6, ZS6TQ 5/6, DP7D 5/7, A61ZA 5/7, OD5ZZ 5/99, 9W2SBD 5/7 and 9W2WWW 5/5 all on Friday. He says, “Very good opening on 10m that day”
Wow, that last one is a load of Ws.
Our long-time contributor from Malaysia, Arie 9W2VVH worked a few.“Friday Sep 27 - Wkd JA9BXN, IK4JPK, SV2JAO, SV2MIN, 9M8ADX, VU2GMT, F4GYK & 9W6DVY. Monday Sep 30 - EA7JZ, YF1CRR & SP7HKK. Tuesday Oct 1 - Only 9W6DLD.”
You can’t win them all but Malaysia does seem to be striving for 10m domination.
Afiq, 9W2AHU also worked a few but on Sunday. IK3ERN 5/9, LZ2FU 5/9, BD7IS 5/8 and he heard OK1BN 3/3 and OD5ZZ 4/5. And he added, “Hi Tony. Good day to you.”
And the same to you Afiq.
Amzari, 9W2GEO did well working into the UK. “Thursday 26/9/13 - worked with 2 UK stations, G3XHZ & G0FWX, 27/9/13 - managed to work with I0KNQ, IK3ERN & YO4RIU, 29/9/13 - On Sunday I worked with 4 station, VR2UD, DK3EE, MW0ZZK & 9W6DVY and on 30/9/13 I only worked with SP7HKK. Looks like the propagation for 10m is now better. All signal reports for my contacts are 5/5 to 5/9 average. Before I forget, my working condition is very simple. I am using an Icom 718 and 10m 1 element delta loop antenna. Hope to catch U on 10m soon Tony.”
Yes I hope so too. Maybe the new antenna will do it, it’s a long time since I worked 9W2.
Mike , 2E0YYY , worked quite a few more on Wednesday. VP8LP 53, PY5ZHP 5/5, PY2NO 5/7, PY2SBT 5/9, PY2IC 5/5, PU4YUM 5/9, FM5DM 5/9, LU6EBY 5/9, PY4ZE 5/9, LU7KAT 5/9, ZP9FGA 5/9, PY1TV 5/9, CA3LGJ 5/9, CX2DA 5/9, ON3SAT 5/5, PU2SEH 5/5, CX3IE 5/5, PV8RF 5/6, EA8CUF 5/9, PU2RGD 5/9, PU6ROB 5/9, PU5CAR 5/9, PY3BSG 5/9, CS8ABG 5/9, PU2PKA 5/9, PU2MJH 5/9, LU5ULV 5/2, PY2RMY 5/7, LU3ED 5/5, PY5IP 5/9, CX7AF 5/3, CX1AT 5/3, PD0MNO 5/5, PU3SSC 5/5, ZS6TAN 5/5, CX5ACQ 5/7, LU5EOI 5/7, G0VGK 5/7, LU5EK 5/9, PU2WLA 5/5, IK3LDL 5/3, CX5CI 5/7, PU2KFQ 5/5, LW1HDI 5/7, LU6FOV 5/9, CX3EL 5/9 and CT3FT 5/9.His comment is, “Had a free afternoon, so I took a trip to the radio club and hooked up a little FT-450 to the Cushcraft tri-bander. Cranked the beam towards South America and found the 10m band in good shape. However, I did experience some QSB. Very enjoyable hour or two.”
Ah that’s cheating, using someone else’s good antenna! Wish I could do that but G4TUT’s antenna is made of string, I think.
Jorge, CT1EXR , worked JF2IWW 559, 5A1AL 559 and SV2JAO 599.
Thanks for the CW report Jorge. Do send in some more.

Sun: 3 sunspots, all which are quiet--no flares. Sunspot AR1855 is growing rapidly, however. It could become a source of eruptions if its development continues.
October 1st, Comet ISON will fly by Mars at a distance of only 0.07 AU. Red Planet satellites and rovers have a ringside seat for the flyby, and they will be snapping pictures despite a shutdown of the US government. (Apparently, Curiosity has been designated "essential personnel.")

Stoke City lost to a single goal against Norwich but it was a very poor game from Stoke. I expect better this weekend at Craven Cottage against Fulham. I’ll be there. And it’s our grandson’s birthday, he’ll be six. He will be at the QPR match with his Dad.
