4850  PBS Xinjiang seems to have returned again; first day here Nov 12;
first heard at 1245 through 1400 UT; started at below threshold level and
very slowly improved to poor; 1332 to 1358 UT non-stop singing; at both
1300 & 1400 UT time pips; not able to make out language, but possibly
their Kazakh service as heard in past years here. So is this replacing
6015?

Am positive was not AIR Kohima! An unfortunate development, as I am
expecting AIR Kohima to be on theair here with coverage of the major event
of the year for them, the Hornbill Festival, which takes place in Nagaland
from Dec 1 to 10. Website at
<http://www.hornbillfestival.com/>

With PBS Xinjiang here, it will make for difficult reception of Kohima. As
this year is AIR Kohima's Golden Jubilee, surely they will be broadcasting
the festival via SW, as they have done in past years.

BTW - The state of Nagaland was formally inaugurated on December 1, 1963,
another important reason for Kohima being on the air Dec 1.

Thanks so much for the photographs, José :-) It is 'believed' that the REE
Cariari shortwave transmission centre is somewhere around these Google
Earth coordinates:

10 25 12 N 83 43 12W. Unfortunately there is no high or medium resolution
satellite imagery available that can resolve the location of the tx
centre.

Ian, I'm not sure at all, but maybe the REE Cariari site is here; Map

Locate Banco de Costa Rica, enlarge a bit and go somewhat west. At the
southern skirts of Barrio de España there is area marked Radio España.
Maybe that's the one, or then not.

17720 Nov 10 at 2026 UT, RHC is back on this frequency today which was
missing yesterday, now with music, 2033 UT recheck in Arabic. 2059 UT it's
dead air already, and turned off at 2102 UT. Today there is no numbers
transmitter on 17480 kHz, which may have needed the same unit yesterday.

17720 kHz must have come back on circa 2200 UT, as at 2227 UT it's running
in Spanish, but only poor-fair strength now, and // 11840, 9810 and 9710
kHz (but no 15230 now or lately). 11840 kHz has good strength, but
suppressed and distorted modulation, as often the case lately. And it's
still like that at recheck 0207 UT Nov 11.

Checking others after 2200 UT: 11880 is OFF, at 2215 UT, which had been
the English-to-Africa for the past week at 22-23, ex 23-24 UT. But there
is a strong dead carrier with lite whine on 11860 kHz, and that comes to
life at 2217 UT with a bit of Spanish, then cut to English amid DXers
Unlimited. Arnie has nothing at all to say about RHC schedule changes
until he's finished at 2225 UT.

So has English deliberately moved from 11880 to 11860 kHz, or is this just
another mistake, as 11860 kHz is already in use at other times? No visible
reason to change it. In fact there is good reason not to change to 11860
kHz, as at 2240 UT I hear some CCI, which per HFCC would be VOA English
via THAILAND, UT Sun-Thu only.

15370 Sunday Nov 10 at 2226 UT, open carrier; 2229 UT RHC IS and theme,
opening Esperanto a bit early, with theme song, schedule still claiming to
be Sundays at 07 UT on 6010 kHz, 15 UT on 11760 kHz, 2230 UT on 15370 kHz.
The 15 should have shifted to 16 UT, but unconfirmed yet; the 07 UT would
normally be tacked on to one of the English frequencies just finished,
which no longer includes 6010 kHz, so really on 6000 kHz, or maybe 6060
kHz ?
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Nov 11)

Nov 12 - CUBA. Two+ weeks after B-13 officially began, and one+ week after
DST ended in areas under Yankee influence, RHC characteristically begins
adjusting its frequencies, having refused to cooperate with most other
countries in advance HFCC planning. Observations November 11:

17720 is now gone, nothing at 2033 UT Nov 11; had been for Europe at 1930-
2100, and sporadically after 2200 UT in Spanish.

13680 is the replacement for 17720 kHz, in Arabic at 2033 UT Nov 11, news
about Cuba. I figured it would drop to the 13 MHz band like most winters.
13680 kHz is an old RHC frequency revived, once used in the mornings, but
not at all in A-13. So this should apply to 1930 UT French, 2000 UT
Portuguese, 2030 UT Arabic --- and 22-24 UT Spanish? Not exactly ---
13680 kHz is off at 2102 UT check, and still off at 2252 UT. See below.

11880 kHz is in French at 2109 UT Nov 11, as previously, except yesterday
when 11860 kHz was employed instead, also for English after 2200 UT.
Recheck 2240 UT, yes also back on 11880 kHz today in English. 11860 kHz
evidently was a mistake.

15370 kHz is still the French frequency (except Esperanto Sundays) at 2230
UT, confirmed at 2252 UT Nov 11, only fair.

Where's the European broadcast in Spanish at 22-24 UT, ex-17720? kHz At
2252 UT I find Spanish on 11840 kHz, still suppressed modulation, 9810,
9710, and 5040 kHz. Nothing on the 17 MHz band.

13860 kHz! At 2302 UT on Nov 11, VG signal, opening "última hora" de la
'Revista Iberoamericana', i.e. second hour, so may have started at 2200 UT
without my noticing. Gives schedule as 5-7 pm Cuban standard time = 22-24
UT, on *13680*, 13740, 11840, 9710, 9810, 5040 kHz, in typical Soviet-
style disorder. So 13860 kHz must be *today's wrong frequency*, mis-punch
for 13680 kHz where we may expect to hear it subsequently. 13740 kHz,
however, is vacant at 2302 UT, but the others are confirmed.

15230 kHz, open carrier at 2252 UT; 2259 UT IS and opening French,
undermodulated.

13780 and 6000 kHz, Nov 12 at 0038 UT are carrying the separate 'Mesa
Redonda' TV soundtrack, which is a sporadic, non-daily service. VG signal
on 13780 kHz, and neither // to 11840. 13860 kHz is off by now.

6070 kHz, Nov 12 at 0049 past 0104 UT, RHC Spanish mainstream on NEW
FREQUENCY, left vacant by CFRX. Use it or lose it! As I informed the ODXA
ASAP. (Altho IIRC vaguely, in a previous season RHC showed up on 6070 kHz
despite CFRX.) This is much stronger than and an echo apart from // 6060.
6070 kHz apparently replaces 6100 kHz, and it's still on at 0418 UT. What
was wrong with 6100 kHz?

GREECE GREECE'S PUBLIC BROADCASTER STILL TORN IN TWO.

The future of Greece's public broadcaster remains unclear four months
after ERT's shock shutdown, as two rival stations continue their parallel
transmissions. With the new broadcaster Nerit not expected to run before
2014, the interim DT (Public Television) has been filling the gap since
mid-July, with news and mostly stock footage.

At the same time, former [sacked] ERT employees, refusing to accept their
dismissal, maintain their rogue broadcasts from the station's occupied
headquarters in the northern Athens suburb of Aghia Paraskevi. Four months
after ERT's shock closure, the deputy minister responsible for public
television, Pantelis Kapsis, raised the issue.

"(The occupation) is a problem that has to be dealt with," he warned this
week. Kapsis said the headquarters have to be evacuated, adding that this
was a matter for judicial authorities.

"If the public broadcaster cannot be housed soon in Aghia Paraskevi, it
risks not being able to cover Greece's EU presidency," he said. Greece
will assume the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union in
January.

But after the international outcry caused by ERT's June 11 shutdown, the
government is well aware that a forceful evacuation could backfire. In the
occupied building, still covered with banners calling for resistance,
defiant staff broadcast on the website ertopen.com, with the participation
of numerous former ERT correspondents from abroad.

"What happened in June is unacceptable for democracy," said 36-year- old
Marina Demertzian while preparing the next news edition for ertopen, which
has a strong presence on Twitter. Just a few kilometres down the road, in
another studio that belonged to the defunct ERT, journalists also prepare
their news coverage for DT.

Some 500 journalists and technicians, part of the 2.700 staff made
redundant with ERT's closure, have been temporarily hired by DT. Unable to
access their former studios, they are currently situated in a nearby
building which lacks the technical infrastructure required for proper news
coverage.

"We don't do television here, it is minor stuff," complained anchorman
Prokopis Doukas to AFP last month. Like many of his colleagues, Doukas
initially participated in the occupation but then decided to move on.

Housed in a building that only has one studio and with main opposition
party Syriza boycotting its programmes, DT broadcasts news shows on a
daily basis but has not produced any original material. The situation is
frustrating for television producers, who are still waiting for tens of
thousands of EUROS in salaries and compensation that the state owes them
since ERT's shutdown.

To avoid accusations of nepotism, the government has entrusted the setting
up of new broadcaster Nerit to prominent independent experts. But the head
of Nerit's supervisory board Theodore Fortsakis told AFP that the most
likely launch date is March 2014, contradicting initial predictions of a
December start.

"We wondered whether we should start with a light programme in January or
if we should wait until we are completely ready, which will be towards
March and that is what we opted for," he said. "We want to launch three
stations: one that will be cultural and educational, a second one that
will be more commercial and a third one, for Greeks abroad."

The Chalkis-Avlida shortwave site transmits on 9420 kHz now a program from
Thessaloniki, which, besides the rather obvious references to the

The enclosed message suggests that this program now goes out via the 1512

at 0005 followed by "Edisis" (news). 9420 kHz was heard in parallel and
with fair reception throughout this period, and both SW frequencies were

re Thessaloniki program on shortwave.

Heard some programmes still on Avlis TX site on 9420 and 15630 kHz, but
not on 41 mb. Unidentified programm, not Greek union rebells program -- I

No Greek language culture feeling though - at 0400-0600 UT, rather
international smooth U.K., US, Italian (Milva singer) and West African pop
music, and after my breakfast logged in again, and heard Sunday Greek mass
live transmission broadcast at 07-08 UT. Nov 10.

GREECE ERA Radio News Bulletin (Sept 17, 2013)

Yesterday morning a representative of a metal trading firm appeared at
ERT's shortwave radio broadcast facilities in Avlida. He photographed the
shortwave antenna systems. Questioned by ERT colleagues working at the
site, he replied that his company is in contact with the Ministry of
Finance to bid on the decommissioning of the 39 antenna webs, their
removal from the site, and the sale of the metal as scrap after the metal
installations have been destroyed.

The impunity of the government and of Stournaras, Kapsis and Manalis knows
no limits, the ERT journalists' union POSPERT states in an announcement.
We note that in Avlida, across an area of 1,160 stremmata, there are 39
metal webs, each ranging from 39 to 100 meters height, which contain the
shortwave antennas broadcasting the 'Voice of Greece,' ERA5, to every
corner of the planet, to every continent and ocean.

The shortwave radio facilities began operating in 1938, broadcasting the
voice of the fatherland to the Albanian front. The only ones who dared
silence them were the Nazis, during their occupation of our country. And
the POSPERT announcement concludes: We won't let them. Will the competent
authorities? The public prosecutors? The politicians?

GUAM Further correspondence with AFN HQ in LA regarding the missing USB
transmissions from Guam on 5765 and 13362 kHz:

while investigating the technical reasons for the program feed not being
'decoded' for transmission, the question arose whether there should be any
such emissions, since Guam is after all US territory and AFN must not
compete with local stations.

I tried to point out that HF is not intended nor suitable for local
reception, and that Guam is merely a convenient base for reaching ships at
sea and other remote outposts, but the impetus seems to be to let it stay
off.

KTWR TESTS DRM Mike Sabin <msabin @ twr.org>

Hi Everyone, We have another DRM test next week. This will be the first
official DRM test for TX7, a Thomson TSW-2250D. On Nov. 5-6, we will be on
15445 kHz with 32 kW at 1500-1530 UT. The beam heading will be 285 degr.
On Nov. 7-8, time, power, and heading are the same, but we will
use 13760 kHz. We will use Mode C, 11Kb/s, MSC=16QAM again.

The previous test with TX6 was picked up well by remote monitoring systems
all over India, but we had very few human monitors there. Most reports
came from outside India (Japan, Taiwan, EU, Sri Lanka, etc...). If you
could get the word out to people you know in India, that would be a great
help. Of course, we still want to hear from people outside India, also.

Since we are using a different antenna for this test, the side-lobes will
be quite different from what we saw in the previous test. There is also
likely to be some coverage footprint differences between the two
frequencies. Another variable is that TX7 achieved an SNR of 31.7 dB in
the 22-meter band while only getting 30.4 dB on 19 meters.

I'll be the shift operator again. If you e-mail or Skype me with problems
you note, maybe I can make corrections in real time. Mike

INDIA 11985, Nov 12 at 0058 UT, there it is again! That mysterious
multi-note interval signal from AIR Khampur and once again I don't have my
recorder handy. Poor signal, undermodulated and flutter. Still going past
0105 UT, instead of Sinhala service. Previously heard Oct 24, as in DXLD
13-44, 36 or 37 notes on keyboard. But what is this signifying? The Sindhi
service should have started at 0100 UT if that were it; its listed 5990
kHz was still covered by China/Cuba at 0059 UT.

Sinhala schedule. The info is that AIR now using new satellite feeds which
is yet to stabilise may be. Lot of wrong feeds are observed lately!

11740 kHz, Goa site, supposed to be // 11985 kHz for 0045-0115 UT Sinhala:

INDIA 11580 AIR to West Africa.

Following my post last night re All India Radio GOS on 11580 kHz, thanks
to Alokesh Gupta for suggesting I refer to the DX India web site for
further information. I did so, but it did not help; seems that AIR are
doing their own thing on this frequency, and that "thing" does not
correspond to the information supplied by DX India, Aoki, or EiBi lists.
And of course India seems to have dropped out of HFCC.

According to DX India, EiBi and Aoki, 1745-1945 UT on 11580 kHz should be
English. To West Africa, according to EiBi and DX India. Not what I found
last night and tonight.

All India Radio, GOS, 11580 kHz Aligarh. But // 11670 kHz (Bengaluru)
after 1945 UT. Nov 11, 2013 Monday. 1851-2020 UT. Language ?? Song with
tabla accompaniment, followed by several other Indian songs. NOT English
as listed by EiBi and Aoki, and HFCC denies all knowledge of it. Cut off
in mid song at 1940* UT. Came back at *1945 UT in an Indian dialect; NOT
French as per Aoki. Several id's for All India Radio General Overseas
Service. Found to be // 11670 kHz to UK and W.Europe, which is in Hindi
according to DX India. Good. To West Africa (EiBi).

All India Radio, GOS, 11580 kHz Aligarh. Nov 12, 2013 Tuesday. 1740-1755*
UT. Language ?? Indian songs, light melodies. But not English as listed by
DX India, Aoki and EiBi. Suddenly off in mid-song at 1755* UT, although
all three say it stays on air until 1945 UT. At 1802-1804 UT it came back
in the middle of a slow classical song with tabla accompaniment. Clearly
different programming, and, I suspect, different antenna azimuth, to the
1740-1755 UT time slot, but for only two minutes. Suddenly off again in
mid song at 1804* (Bill Bingham-AFS, dxld Nov 12)

Yet another variation for AIR on 11580 kHz. That is three consecutive
nights with three different presentations (or lack of).

All India Radio, GOS, 11580 Aligarh. Nov 13, 2013 Wednesday. 1640-1820 UT.
Nothing heard. AWOL, no carrier. Lots of lightning QRN due to a local
thunderstorm in Jo'burg.

RUSSIA 11790 Tatarstan, Kazan, via Novosibirsk, Russia. On 7 November
at 0410 UT on 11790 kHz received the Na Volne Tatarstana program. Transfer
anniversary is in Russian. Began with a story about the academic history
of the Tatar people. Since 0440 UT is a musical show with stories about
the history of radio in Tatarstan. Transmission began with a weak signal.
SINPO - 35333. Signal began to rise. At 0415-0440 UT SINPO - 55444. End of
transmission at 0459 UT.

RUSSIA 7320 on Nov 13 at 0625 UT, good carrier but very undermodulated
music, some flutter, 0626 Russian announcement. It`s R. Rossii, Magadan,
100 kW due northeast and also toward us.

5930 R. Rossii, Pet/Kam, Nov 13 at 0629 UT I check for // to 7320 kHz,
but it's not. At 0630 UT, maybe it is, but not synchronized (which is the
usual situation when both sites on same network feed 6 hours later on
5930, 5940 kHz).

ACI to 7320 from 7325 kHz increases circa 0629 UT as BBC switches from
Woofferton to Ascension.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Nov 13)

There is a good chance that you did not find 5930 kHz // with 7320 kHz at
0629 UT, due to 5930 kHz broadcasting their own local "Radio Rossii
Kamchatka" programming from 0610 to 0630 UT (Mon-Fri). This per Aoki
Nagoya list, which lists "Kamchatsky." For myself, I have often heard the
"Radio Rossii Kamchatka" programs from 0710 to 0800 UT with good
reception.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, DXplorer Nov 15)

SLOVAK REPUBLIC 5820 kHz observation.

(Herbert Meixner-AUT, A-DX Nov 14)

At 1959 UT on 5820 kHz a WRN ID and announcement for an upcoming programme
from Polskie Radio was heard, then the carrier disappeared suddenly.

So it looks like even a double goof:

The wrong programming in the playout and aired 1.5 hours late, then
apparently the transmission had been aborted when realizing that it is
completely wrong.
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Nov 14)

5810+5820 no-show.

The hastily announced (why this panic at all?) Radio Slovakia
International transmission on 5810 plus 5820 kHz did not take place. It
can be ruled out that it was just not audible, since the similar one for
KBS World that starts at 1900 UT comes in, with both the AM carrier on
5885 kHz and the DRM racket on 5875 kHz found on already when first
checked at 1858 UT.

The broadcast itself started with almost a minute of test tone until the
playout of the actual programme followed. Reception of the AM signal on
5885 kHz is not really satisfactory, unlike the first transmissions in
October.

SPAIN/USA 21630 on Nov 9 after 1400 UT, REE is still here on ill-chosen
new frequency, colliding with BBC Hausa via ASCENSION until 1430 UT. At
1509 UT, now it's colliding with WHRI, gospel huxter in English! and
making a SAH. REE supposedly stops 21630 kHz at 1600 UT, and on weekends
only, WHRI starts 21630 kHz at 1500 UT instead of 1600 UT.

21630 kHz is carrying a silly ballgame, // 17595 kHz, but at 1511 UT,
21610 kHz is NOT --- instead alternative programming with a YL talking
about YL affairs. (21540 kHz is just Kuwait; Spain's other collision would
have closed at 1500 UT.) SBG still going on 17595 kHz at 1535 UT check.

According to the schedule, Family Radio will be using as many as eight
transmitters at the same time, leaving only five for other programming. I
suspect some of these might be wooden registrations. You would think WRMI
would want to maximize customer options.

This sale adds a lot of capacity to the brokered time broadcast business
model for private SW stations in the U.S. Might this drive down airtime
prices and put pressure on the financial viability of other SW operations?

I also wonder if WRMI actually paid cash for the Okeechobee facility, or
might have simply been handed the keys in exchange for a certain amount of
airtime for Family Radio over a certain period of time?

Going to be interesting to see who buys time on the revamped WRMI; will
likely be similar to the clients we see on WWCR, WWRB, WTWW, etc. Wonder
if time could be sold to Radio Martí if the Greenville IBB site is closed?
(Steve Luce-TX-USA, dxld Nov 6)

Glenn, I understand what you're saying and that would be a good eventual
goal, but for the immediate future we want to try to keep clients who are
on 9955 kHz on the same frequency for the time being in order not to lose
listeners who know where to find these programs. But inevitably, some
changes will have to be made, and probably before long.

It's a pretty complicated operation because certain transmitters are
connected to certain antennas, and there are various other technical
considerations that have to be taken into account. I'm learning more about
engineering than I ever wanted to know! So it may take a while to master
the system, but we'll start tackling it.
(Jeff White-FL-USA WRMI, dxld Nov 6)

We here at Adventist World Radio congratulate Radio Miami International
WRMI in transferring their international broadcasting service from the 50
kW WRMI in Miami Florida to the magnificent large facility located at
Okeechobee in lower central Florida at the end of the month. Over a period
of many years, the original WRMI has performed an excellent service to the
international radio world, and with their enlarged facility, their
international radio impact will be greatly increased.

The significant move that WRMI is making adds a new dimension to current
events in the international shortwave world. In an era when some
international radio broadcasting stations have been diminishing their
involvement in shortwave broadcasting, the move from a single transmitter
near Miami to a multiple transmitter facility in lower central Florida
demonstrates a confidence in the viability of short broadcasting that is
still indeed valid. As so many international radio monitors are aware, the
shortwave bands are still packed with the voices of many shortwave
stations.

It would be hoped that the remarkable WRMI-WYFR move will give confidence
to other shortwave stations that may be considering a reduction of their
own shortwave scheduling that shortwave broadcasting is still a valuable
and viable method of international communication. We would also like to
express appreciation to Family Radio for enabling their mighty facility to
remain on the air under this new ownership.

All we can say is: - Goodbye WRMI Miami: You have performed well, Welcome
to the new WYFR-WRMI: We wish you well in presenting a strong confidence
in the international radio world.

International news media are carrying the news regarding the transfer of
WYFR, the large shortwave station in lower central Florida, to WRMI Radio
Miami International in Miami in the United States, at the end of this
month. Due to this remarkable radio development, the international DX
program, "Wavescan", will interrupt the flow of its regular programming to
honor the occasion. The final broadcasts of "Wavescan" over WRMI Miami
will be on the air during the last complete week in the month of November,
and during the first complete week in December, "Wavescan" will be aired
for the first occasion over the large new WRMI which is located a little
north of Lake Okeechobee in lower central Florida.

The DX program, "Wavescan" is written in Indianapolis by Dr. Adrian
Peterson, DX editor for Adventist World Radio, and it has been produced
over the past several years by Jeff White at WRMI Radio Miami
International in Miami. This program is on the air from WRMI in Florida,
KSDA on the island of Guam, and seasonally by several of the shortwave
relay stations in the AWR network, and also over WWCR and WINB in the
United States.

All reception reports to "Wavescan" for the last week in November will be
QSLed with a special "Last Week" endorsement for WRMI Miami, and all
reception reports to "Wavescan" during the first week in December will be
QSLed with a "First Week" endorsement for the new WRMI at Okeechobee.
These special endorsements will be applied to all QSL cards issued for
these special editions of "Wavescan" as heard on any of these stations
that carry the program, though, where possible direct broadcast from the
old and the new WRMI would also be appreciated. "Wavescan" may also be
heard via numerous electronic deliveries, including station websites and
iPod deliveries.

Listeners are encouraged to send their reception reports for these
broadcasts to the Wavescan address in Indianapolis with address label and
return postage, and also to the station that is carrying the programming,
and also to the address for the new WRMI. The last edition of "Wavescan"
via the old WRMI will be a special tribute to this station, and the first
broadcast from the new WRMI will honor this new development.
