ALBANIA Strange spurious signals of China Radio International via Cerrik
relay site

0700-0857 11785 CER 150 kW 310 deg to WeEu English // 11925, co-ch VOT
0700-0857 11855 CER 150 kW 310 deg to WeEu Chinese // 11715.

Formula is:
Chinese 11855 minus 140 = 11715 kHz
English 11785 plus 140 = 11925 kHz
(DX MIX News, Ivo Ivanov-BUL, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Dec 21)

Re: CRI from Cerrik, Albania.
Ivo, - this intermodulation of two CRI En/Mandarin outlets at Cerrik on
25mb in our UT mornings has been happened always since the Chinese came
back to use Cerrik site some 10 years ago.

This from my archive of 7 Dec 2004:
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Dec 21)

ALBANIA / (history)
11715 kHz spur of new powerhouse CRI Cerrik Albania relay 11855 kHz.

0700-0857 Chinese 11785 // 17650KAS [Ciraf 27] WeEUR
11925 kHz spur of new powerhouse CRI Cerrik Albania relay 11785 kHz.

Both spurs of 11785/11855 kHz are 70 kHz apart, the normal procedure,
upper spur carries lower freq program content, and lower spur carries
upper frequ program content v.v.

ANGOLA 4949.749 Radio Nacional 1st service noted with very LOW
modulation. At 1820 UT Dec 25 on remote unit in downunder Australia.

ARGENTINA 15344.706 RAE tonight, on 15344.706 kHz and hopping around at
least 10 Hertz, played Tango mx what else ?, in French sce of RAE Buenos
Aires, heard also on remote unit at Victor's place Piliyandala Ceylon
island. S=6 signal.

AUSTRIA/FRANCE/GERMANY The big NDR Xmas Eve special was a big bust here,
but I assume did better on various high seas than 800 km from the nearest
salt water in deep North America, far beyond any intended coverage. At
1956 UT on Dec 24, nothing audible on 6125, 9460, 9885, 9925 kHz (too
close to WTWW 9930 anyway), but possibly a carrier on 11955 kHz.
Propagation from Europe is currently pitiful.

At 2103 UT I check the second batch of frequencies: nothing on 6040, 9625,
9880, 9925 kHz, a JBA carrier on 9435 kHz, better at 2133 UT when it's
more likely Romania in the collision I foresaw. Final check at 2255 UT,
still nothing making it from NDR frequencies, which were via Nauen,
Germany, Issoudun, France, and Moosbrunn, Austria.

9925 NDR Hamburg on 9925 kHz best one for reception, "Gruss am Bord"
Program. Dec 24 at 2015-2052+ UT. Caught this broadcast just as the singal
was fading on this frequency on the longwire. Hear during this broadcast
two xmas songs, 'Silent night' at 2016 UT and 'Noel at 2045 UT.

Lot'sa talk, caught a message in Philippine Language{to commercial marine
staff} by YL at 2042 hrs. Checked the other frequencies with 6125 kHz
China National Radio here, 11955 kHz blocked by a Ulitity Station, 9460
kHz blocked by a Chinese Musical Jammer from 9455 kHz, and 9885 kHz just
barely audible.

Reception [in CAN] was best on the 125 foot longwire with the pi-antenna
tuner, pointed northeast, terminated. Just re-checked and 9925 kHz is
slowly dropping off into the noise. Have a good recording of this
broadcast which I hope will warrant a verification reply.

Okay now what is the transmitted site for the 9925 kHz relay Nauen or
Moosbrunn ???
Also any specific address to where we can send reports too ????

Bruce, the Perseus site is just north of me, located near St. Paul, hosted
by our fellow DX'er Don Monan ...

shows 9880 and 9885 kHz coming from ORS Moosbrunn Austria relay site.

This two signals were the best in South Asia, Sri Lanka and Australia
yesterday evening Dec 24.

Here attached my observations from last night Dec 24. ORS outlets 9880 and
9885 kHz supplied the Indian Ocean, South Asia, Ceylon and Australia very
good!

The last quarter of an hour I have indulged in from there. A nice clean
signal observed in Brisbane Queensland, the Greyline was right about
Australia and PNG. Azimuth direction from Austria in exactly the dark
portion of the earth, just right for a 31 mb signal propagation.

Signals to Northern Europe only 6125/6040 kHz propagate in Sweden and
Finland.

North America has n o t operated this year directly, and the DXers were
'poor off' there.

My Perseus observations on remote posts in Florida, Toronto and New York
showed only weak signals at 6125/6040 and 9925 kHz. Same also has been
confirmed by Eike / Eibi touring in Alabama USA at present.

Unfortunately, this winter is no special North Atlantic azimuth service,
so the 1900 and 2100 UT outlet signals are rather poor in CAN/USA tonight,
when compared to previous years.

1900-1930 UT
Logged the first 30 minutes via Perseus remote rx.
On Victor's post in Ceylon, in CAN / USA, in SWE / FIN,
in GRC / ITA, in southern Germany / and Switzerland.

All in all, a good selection of frequencies, except for the 9460 kHz
selection next the bad terrible Firedrake Jamming signal from China on
9455 kHz, which is a fatal selection mistake, for example, 9400 and
9430 kHz and adjacent side channels are totally free in the target area.

CLN
6125 kHz in Sri Lanka, just above the threshold/turf around 1905 UT.

All signals are quarter second off my local cable net access to the
Program "NDR Info / Special" at local Germany net,
of course delays from the satellite up- and downlink load,
and the Cable Network RX delay.

9460 nil, adjacent 9455 CHN Firedrake music S=9+15 dB.
9885 S=7-8 clear fair in Ceylon,
co-channel Radio Cairo in Russian there does not matter.
9925 only S=4 poor.
11955 nil in South Asia.

GRC - remote rx in Athens
6125 S=9+20dB, 9460 very strong S=9+25dB (9455 Firedrake rather no QRM)
9885 only S=7, 9925 fair S=9+5dB, 11955 nil.

ITA on the Riviera coast and Elba island coast line.
6125 S=9+25, real Powerhouse, like in southern and northern Germany.
9460 nil, 9885 totally covered by R Cairo Russian - here in Europe.
9925 very strong powerhouse at S=9+30dB level.
11955 S=9 medium signal. I guess much stronger on all Africa too.

Northern SWE / FIN
6125 S=8 fluttery.
9460 totally covered by CHN Firedrake music on 9455, all others nil.

At 2055 / 2110 UT switch over ...

Florida / Rochester NY, CAN/USA
6125 / later 6040 kHz S=7 fluttery, S=9+5dB in NY / MA USA.
9925 S=7 - UTE QRM 9923.9 kHz,
all other frequencies nil.

AUS - Brisbane Queensland
9885 S=9+15dB signal best, the only frequency from ORS Moosbrunn across
the North Eastern Indian Ocean. 9880 kHz at 2146 UT S=9+10dB.
all other frequencies nil.

GRC Athens
6125 / 6040 S=9+30dB powerhouse
9625 S=8, 9880 S=9+5dB,
but 9435 + 9925 kHz both nil.

FIN / northern SWE
6040 S=7 fluttery, all others nil.

U.K.
6040 S=9+15dB, 9435 S=7, 9925 S=7, remaining nil.

NDR - Info / Gruss an Bord / Greeting to board
Guten Abend!

"berauschend".

Um 2109 UT (1509 Uhr Ortszeit / LT) kam gerade so was auf der 9925 kHz an,
25422.

Um 2254 UT kurz vor Schluss war die 6040 kHz halbwegs brauchbar, 33422;
die 9435 und 9925 kHz schwach mit S=2. Nichts verwertbares auf den anderen
Frequenzen.

(Eike Bierwirth-D, at present touring Alabama-USA Dec 25)

re "Gruss am Bord"
6125, NDR Hamburg, "Gruss am Bord" prgm, fairly good at *1900 on Dec 24;
nx, wx, into "Gruss am Bord" prgm with bells, foghorn, then many greetings
in German, some read by the sender, others by man or woman ancr, one by a
kid; mentions of various places, captains, occasional applause; mx
interludes with mostly German songs, also "White Christmas," "Sitting on
the Dock of the Bay," "Feliz Navidad."

Mention of Manila at 2000 UT and message in what sounded like a Philippine
lang. Quite good by 2000 UT, at which time the others were "fair minus" to
poor in this order: 9925, 9885, 11955 kHz. I couldn't tell what was on
9460.

re: Norddeutscher Rundfunk NDR Hamburg tonight 1900 till 2300 UT on
shortwave.
6125 Solid signal of MBR Nauen here - programme reminds me of the British
Antarctic Survey broadcast via BBCWS with its messages for family members
away from home at Christmas.

Part 2 on different frequencies is from 2100-2300 UT - 6040 (also Nauen)
is the frequency for the North Atlantic.
(Alan Pennington-UK, BrDXC-UK Dec 24)

NRD Norddeutscher Rundfunk Hamburg special BCast fair - good and in the
clear on 6040 kHz, at 2101 UT on Dec 24.
(Larry Yamron-PA-USA, DXplorer Dec 24)

NDR Norddeutscher Rundfunk Hamburg on air now. 6040 kHz same here in NH at
2115 UT on Dec 24. // 9925 kHz not too bad either.
(Scott Barbour-NH-USA, DXplorer Dec 24)

NDR special bcst on 9885 kHz (Moosbrunn, Austria site) from Perseus site
in Alberta at S3 from 2003 UT tune w/ man and woman ancrs, occasional
songs including "Silent Night" at 2016.5-2019.5 UT. SINPO 35533. Here in
SoCal there is no visible carrier from Moosbrun but from Issoudun on 9925
kHz there is a visible carrier and bare threshold audio. Alberta would be
on the side lobe of the Moosbrunn 115 deg beam to Eastern Indian Ocean.

re NDR Hamburg on 9925 kHz best one for reception. 9925 is the Issoudun
France site at 250 kW - good deal for me, as I have never bothered
verifying France in all my years of DXing!

NDR and Mighty KBC Heard in Chicago-IL-USA.
Two radio gifts showed up in my Christmas stocking. Thanks, Santa!

Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR Hamburg), decent signals from 2130 to 2210 UT
on 6040, 9435, and 9925 kHz with maritime greetings program, including a
beautiful selection of holiday music. I didn't try for the 1900 to 2100 UT
broadcast but managed to hear the 2100-2300 UT signal on my Sony
ICFSW7600G from our condo in Chicago, using a scrap of wire as the
antenna.

CHINA "Voice of the South China Sea" - It is understood that the first
multi-language broadcast of the South China Sea and the neighboring
countries and regions services in China - the sound of the South China Sea
China Radio International broadcasting on April 9, 2013, the use of
Mandarin Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Malay, Filipino and Indonesian six
languages, including through the FM, AM and shortwave broadcasts in three
ways, and the South China Sea by the sound of websites, mobile clients
simultaneously broadcast online. Program covering the island of Hainan,
China's South China Sea and the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and other
neighboring countries, the South China Sea.

Dave - there is audio streaming of FM 101.0 as follows, but when I
listened was not "Voice of the South China Sea." Need to listen in when
they are actually broadcasting, whenever that is?

Perhaps "Voice of the South China Sea" presently only on the following
stations?
Hainan three Shashi : FM 101.0
Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City : AM 927
Hainan Qionghai : FM 102.0

CHINA/ASCENSION ISLAND White noise jamming against VOA and BBCWS.

Severe BBCWS jamming by the Chinese broadband buzz noise jammer.

12091.2 to 12099.2 kHz
11806.1 to 11814.3 kHz
Chinese broadband white noise jamming against
BBCWS in English at 2050 UT Dec 20.
12095 2 x 250 kW BBCWS on 27 and 65 degr, 20-24 UT, also
11810 1 x 250 kW at 18-22 UT.

das naechtliche "Weisse Rauschen Jamming" also digitale

gejammte BBCWS Kanaele ...

12091.2 to 12099.2
11806.1 to 11814.3
Chinese broadband white noise jamming against
BBCWS in English at 2050 UT Dec 20.
12095 2 x 250 kW BBCWS on 27 and 65 degr, 20-24 UT, also
11810 1 x 250 kW at 18-22 UT.

Ist das Raumwellenjamming, oder sind 'nur' Grossstadt Beijing Lokaljammer,
deren Signale im Winter vagabundieren ?

CUBA 11880 Dec 16 at 2141 UT, RHC has finally resumed Portuguese during
this semihour (to Africa), instead of repeating the 2100 UT French
broadcast; but something else has to be wrong! 11760 kHz is // 11880 kHz
in Portuguese, when 11760 kHz is supposed to be off the air after its
2100 UT French to Americas.

at 0158 UT, trace of music and talk from AFN. I'm enjoying a pre-Solstice
porch monitoring session again at a balmy 65 degrees per the G8
thermometer; before we're to be hit with an ice storm 24+ hours later.
(I often accompany the DX-398 with the G8 for checking // s, etc.)

7365 rather exact 7364.982 kHz, listeners letter programm in German
at 0750 UT Dec 23, at 0850 UT religious programm on "Heiland".

Also light music songs of R 700 Kall Eifel on 7310.002 kHz at same time,

// Avlis-GRC on all 3 channels, 7450, 9420, and 15650 ! kHz.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Dec 20)

7475 on Dec 13 at 0641 UT, presumed Thessaloniki with undermodulated
Greek music, instead of 7450 kHz this time. Still nothing audible on 9420
kHz or higher frequencies in daytime.

7475 kHz is the frequency of choice tonight, Dec 14 at 0343 UT with
undermodulated Greek music on S=9+18 carrier.

7475, Dec 15 at 0204, undermodulated Greek again. Tsk, "undermodulated" is
such a long word and we have to write it so often about so many stations.
Should I declare an abbr., like UM?
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Dec 18)

Yes, tonight Dec 23 also 7450 kHz at 2121 UT heard undermodulated, when
VoIRIB Sirjan Spanish ended co-channel.

7475 very weak signal at S=3 level in Germany and England. Seems like an
amateur radio station level just on threshold level, I guess - could be
NEVER of 100 kW unit in Avlis in use.
At 0950 UT a German language pop music group heard
"Wir werden es schaffen ...".

Thessaloniki rebells relay?
9420 S=9+25dB at 0900 UT, same like 11645 kHz,
but now 11645 kHz totally covered by China mainland FIREDRAKE music
jamming against VOA Udorn Thani Thailand 09-11 UT.

Early in the morning 'they - the rebells' send even two differing
programs, once 7475 kHz somewhat weaker signal, as well as the 'normal
Thessaloniki' program on 9420/11645 (latter sometimes 15650 instead) kHz.

Sometimes I think that the weaker signal of the third Greek transmitter
comes of the Maritime station SVO Olympia Radio at Paralia site,
so 'non-paid' the Electricity costs to conceal something. Throughout the
country there are 350.000 Current customers whose disconnected power
connections before of the government, now again illegally were turned to
the grid by "Current Rebels" movement ...

at 1906 with closing in both Malagasy and French. Other reports have had
this one up as high as 5014.9 kHz, so it's still wonders around. Indeed,
in my two minutes of observation before it left the frequency, there was
wobble in the signal when listening in USB. Fair on Dec 16. Incidentally,
no sign of Bata.

ist wieder 20 Hertz tiefer zugange.

ISRAEL 6885 / 15850 Galei Zahal QRT on Short wave.
Hi Glenn, bad news concerning Galei Zahal short wave broadcasts. They have
been missing for over a week and I feared the worst. This message confirms
they have discontinued 15850 and 6885 kHz. Another country lost to us
short wave listeners.
(Alan Holder, Isle of Wight-UK, dxld Dec 15)

Short wave frequencies. Dear Friends, For several days I have noticed the
short wave frequencies 15850 and 6885 kHz have been missing. Please can
you let me know - are they closed down completely, or is there a technical
problem? It has always been a pleasure to listen to your programmes on a
simple portable radio, instead of using the computer and I am missing the
broadcasts a lot. Hoping to hear from you, Alan Holder, Isle of Wight,
England.

LIBERIA 4760 ELWA Monrovia Return.
Surprised to find a signal here with M preaching with the mic positioned

Ment of Liberia during tlk by M at 0741 UT. Was gradually and slowly

RUSSIA/USSR Voice Of Russia Former 'Radio Moscow' To End Shortwave
Broadcasts from The ARRL Letter on December 19, 2013
Website: <http://www.arrl.org/>

Voice of Russia (VOR <http://english.ruvr.ru/> , the former Radio Moscow
during the USSR era, will cease shortwave broadcasts as of January 1,
2014.

From the 1950s through the 1980s, the station, as Radio Moscow, was a
virtual beacon for short-wave listeners (SWLs), many of whom gravitated
into Amateur Radio. Voice of Russia currently broadcasts to 160 countries
in 38 languages for an aggregate 151 hours per day on short and medium
waves, on FM, via satellite, and via the Internet. Earlier this year
shortwave transmissions were cut to 26 hours a day in all languages, down
from more than 50 hours a day in 2012.

VOR, which claims to be the first radio station to broadcast
internationally, will continue to broadcast online and via three medium-
wave transmitters. In 2003 VOR was among the first major international
radio broadcasters to launch daily broadcasts to Europe in Digital Radio
Mondiale
(DRM <http://www.drm.org/>

As a result of a decree signed earlier this month by Russian President
Vladimir Putin, the Voice of Russia radio company officially ceased to
exist on December 9 and merged with several other state-run news agencies
as part of Rossia Segodnya, a Russia-based international news service.
Putin's decree also abolished the State Fund of Television and Radio
Programs, placing it under control of All-Russia State Television and
Radio Broadcasting Company.

bekannt.

deutschen Angebote ergaenzen sollen.

BBC Radio Humberside have an hour long programme on Christmas Day at
1800 UT entitled "Ottringham Calling."

"How a radio mast in a Holderness village changed the outcome of WWII."

According to Edward Pawley's "BBC Engineering 1922-1972", Ottringham,
known as OSE5, was built in 1943 and was capable of radiating a maximum
power of 800kW on MW or LW and was for a time the most powerful
broadcasting station in the world.

The last I heard was that the very heavily protected buildings were still
standing and now housed a local business.

I also heard a story somewhere that the local residents could actually
hear the broadcasts by simply placing a spoon on the side of a tin bath to
form a crude rectifier, the signals were so strong!
(Nick Buxton-UK, ibid.)

From 2003 history:
M GIBLIN sends in a local press cutting about the BBC stn in Ottringham,
Humberside:

"In 1943 Ottringham was home to the world's most powerful radio tx
carrying BBC Overseas and Home Services, including the wartime speeches of
Winston Churchill. The Ottringham stn was built mainly to transmit BBC
radio bcs overseas, and transmitted across the whole of occupied Europe.
It proved almost impossible for the German occupiers to jam, and may even
have been used to transmit secret coded messages to resistance fighters.

The stn was heavily guarded and well camouflaged and did not sustain a
single hit during the whole of the war. It also transmitted popular
British progrmes, and it was said that locally the signal was so strong
that locals could listen using only a tin bath and metal spoon!"
(via Mike Barraclough, Sept WDXC-UK Contact via dxld Aug 31, 2003)

Mike Barraclough has researched further:

In a series of articles on black propaganda and the Aspidistra tx
published some years ago in Contact MICHAEL BURDEN reported that
"Throughout 1943, "Aspidistra" continued to relay the BBC European Service
but early in that year it could no longer claim to be the 'biggest
Aspidistra in the world'. For, on 12th February 1943, the BBC brought into
sce a high-power Long Wave stn on the east coast of England, situated at
the village of Ottringham on the north bank of the Humber Estuary.

The stn consisted of 4 x 200 kW txs which had the facility to he coupled
to give a combined output of 800 kW. This made Ottringham the most
powerful radio stn in the world at that time, and ensured that the BBC was
heard with good reception in Germany, even during daylight hours on a
standard domestic receiver. It operated on a freq close to the German
national "Deutschlandsender" home sce.

A Google search found Arthur Dungate's home page
<http://www.bbctv-ap.freeserve.co.uk/home.htm>
where he recalls listening to the BBC European Service from Ottringham on
167 kHz with 200 kW after the war in Blackpool.

The internet site
<http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/o/ottringham>

has a lot of detail on the site including two photographs of one section
some of the original basement rooms in the control centre which still
remain intact.

Details of the Aspidistra site in Crowborough, with recent photographs are
also linked to. The site was 94 acres with seven buildings and several 500
foot tx masts. It was owned by the Govt, not the BBC. The txs were housed
in 4 heavily protected surface buildings, possibly with earth revetments.
These were driven and fed from a 5th building while the 6th building was
the Central Combining House which contained the circuits to combine 200 kW
at a time to a maximum 800 kW output.

Although it was tested to 800 kW it never ran on progrme to that level,
600 kW being the maximum used. The stn was designed to bc with 200, 400,
600 or 800 kilowatts with up to four separate progrmes simultaneously. The
fourth tx was used to relay the Home Service to the East Riding and
Lincolnshire.

The stn continued in sce until well after the war but closed on 15th
February 1953 because neither channels nor funds were available for it to
continue in sce. The site was dismantled shortly after closure and the txs
were moved to Droitwich where they carried Radio 1 and Radio 4 on medium
wave and Radio 2 on longwave well into the 1970's. One of the aerial masts
in still in use at Brookmans Park; the others are believed to have gone to
other BBC HF sites.

The site of the masts has returned to farmland, the rest of the site was
cleared of buildings and is now an industrial unit, storage yard and lorry
park. As a boy I lived in nearby Withernsea between 1952 and 1963 and can
recall, when I was about 8, being taken round the Ottringham site. A local
family friend, who was a farmer, was considering buying the land and took
my father, his bank manager, accompanied by me, around the site as he was
looking for a loan to cover its purchase.

USA Re my log of WRMI on new 9840 kHz around 0700 UT on Dec 19, with
Brother Scare via R. Africa Network, Jeff White {of RMI Okeechobee}
explains:

"We are making some changes as we go along, based on our findings from the
first two weeks or so of broadcasting from Okeechobee. 9355 kHz had too
high a VSWR on the 87-degree antenna, so we have just changed to 9840 kHz
(0400-0800 UT) on the same antenna. There will probably be more changes to
come in the next few weeks. Jeff"

It's always interesting to learn of logistical reasons for frequency
selexion which one could never figure out otherwise.

USA 7491.38 Dec 25 at 0142 UT I am checking 7490 kHz for WBCQ, after
finding 5110v-CUSB occupied by Brother Scare), but instead find a very
weak AM signal measured on this frequency, making even weaker het against
something on 7490 kHz. At 0143 UT the 7491+ station fades up enough to
hear it say "The heart and soul of music" (?).

'Heart & Soul of America Broadcast' is what had been on 5110 kHz three or
four nights a week, so must have been demoted to this once Brother Scare
moved in. Current online 7490 kHz sked shows H&SOAB only on UT Sundays
00-02 UT; with Overcomer UT Wednesday at 01-04 UT, but not.

This signal is so weak and so far off-frequency that I suspect it is not
the usual 7490 kHz transmitter but a backup/alternate of much lower power.
Still the same at 0159 UT with VP/JBA music. Remains to be heard what
becomes of the rest of WBCQ 7490 programming. As for the very weak het
with 7490 kHz, no other broadcaster is scheduled there.

YEMEN 6135 Yemen R. fading in around 1426 UT on Dec 6 and 19 and
gradually improving until the VOA transmitter check at 1445-1447 UT -
after this Yemen is not hrd leading me to believe they may be signing off
at 1445 UT instead of listed 1500 UT. This has been the pattern w/ Yemen
for past two weeks or so. Programming is either local music or Koran
reading w/ periodic short anmts - language unknown and hard for me to
discern exactly what type of music. Not typical Arabic pop mx, so maybe
Koran reading. On Dec 19 sig lvl got to S2+ before the VOA transmitter
turned on and there was a discernable xmtr hum on the freq. This hum was
not audible after the VOA xmtr finished its tuning test at 1447 UT. Tnx to
Ron Howard for the heads up on this one!
