AUSTRALIA 17760 Kununurra Tech Problems, HCJB - Perhaps this should be
called "Constipated Kununurra" because it seemed to be having technical
difficulties getting its signal out when first noted at 0145 UT for its
Hindi service. Lots of random broken transmission, often off for 20
seconds and then on for 2 seconds. Monitored this for around 30 minutes
but it never got any better. Unusual because this outlet seems to have
been reliable in the past. Good level signal strength when it was there,
Febr 7.

[later] From the HCJB Kununurra Broadcast Technician:

Broadcast Report 07 Febr 2014. This morning's broadcast suffered lots of
interruptions because of a combination of tuning problems and a rare case
of transmitter control malfunction that inhibits proper alarming. We would
usually catch this problem when working out there, but with the creek in
high flood this is not possible.

* affected programs: Rawang (raw), Duhdim Nun (cnh), Hindi (hin),
English (eng), Nepali (nep), Marathi (mar), Gujarati (gui [sic]).
* UTC lost broadcast time: 1 hour 50 minutes (0030-0220).
* target area: South East Asia.
Via Shelley at HCJB Global Aust.

For international DXers following this post, at this time of year the far
north of tropical Australia receives its major rainfall - usually 100's of
millimetres every week, and the occasional cyclone. The place becomes
awash with water! The creeks mentioned above become raging rivers!
We hope Kununurra doesn't get washed away! Wink 73's

BRAZIL/BOLIVIA 6135+ on Feb 18 at 0056 UT, big het, no doubt BOLIVIA on
the lo side, and R. Aparecida on the hi side. Can make out some music on
the upper, so compare it to 9630- kHz; yes, sounds the same altho not with
two receivers for exact // . Then at 0106 UT I can make out some
Portuguese on the lo side of 9630 kHz. At 0136 UT again hearing same music
on both.

Not trying to measure either this time, but Bryan Clark, NZ, had Aparecida
on 9629.79 kHz, Jan 19 at 0824 UT; and Dave Valko, PA, on 9629.657 kHz,
Feb 7 at 2335 kHz. Nothing audible here on 11855v kHz, and too much slop
from Cuba on 5035v kHz.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 18)

Radio Aparecida well appearance on all three channels
9629.711/...745, and 11854.847 kHz, nothing on 5035 kHz,

CANADA/CUBA/GERMANY 6069.954 CFRX Toronto noted with fine S=6 signal in
CA-US remote unit at 0715 UT Febr 14. Phone-in program.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 14)

6069.992 Despite instead in Europe noted German pop mx station 'of the
sixties' from Rohrbach Waal with poor tiny S=4 signal on 6069.992 kHz,
i.e. Radio Channel 292 from Rohrbach Waal site.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 14)

6070v on Feb 13 at 2222 UT, checking for reactivated CFRX Toronto: it's
just barely audible, much weaker than e.g. 6090 kHz Anguilla, which is
much weaker than 6115 kHz WWCR, which of course counts on 100 times the
nominal power of CFRX and no doubt a much higher gain rhombic antenna.

I was going to recheck before 2400 UT as RHC is to come on 6070 kHz at
0000 UT, and at 0001 UT Feb 14, it's not yet too late: no RHC on 6070 kHz,
and CFRX is much better now, tho RHC is splattering from 6060 kHz.

"Newstalk 10-10" attributions in news, but *0003 UT RHC carrier on,
quickly ramping up power and overcoming CFRX, tho I can still make out an
item about Mayor Ford before RHC modulation cuts on less than a minute
later, just as they are mentioning a joint R. Rebelde / RHC program,
apparently the music-fill hour sounding like folk Andean for starters.
After that we can forget about listening to CFRX for the next five hours,
as the best it can do is provide a bit of QRM to Cuba, q.v., making a low
audible het (LAH) as Wolfgang Bueschel has measured CFRX 36 to 41 Hz low,
and RHC is presumably closer to nominal. How long will frequency manager
Arnie prolong his "bully" reputation?

CUBA 5010 Radio Havana Cuba at 0235 UT, on // 5040 kHz in Spanish
w/Id's & tlk by OM. Fair signal, S5 , with high static levels. New
frequency ? or transmitter problems. I have not heard any news about Cuba
being on this frequency in addition to 5040 kHz.
(Stephen C Wood-MA-USA, dxld Febr 18)

I've heard it too at times, not checked now. Leapfrog mixing product of
5040 over 5025 kHz Rebelde transmitter at same site, another 15 kHz lower.
There could also be one on the other side with Rebelde audio on 5055 kHz.
When Rebelde goes off 5025 kHz, these should also disappear.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 19)

Thanks to a tip of Stephen in dxld tonight, noted two Cuban
intermodulations originate from very same bcasting center site
at 0410 UT on Febr 19 on 5010 and 5055 kHz.

re intermodulation
... and that mean, both NVIS antennas at Quivican very same transmitter
site were in use at this hour...

Latter both S=7 IM signals noted on remote Perseus posts at FL, MA,
and CA, fundamentals music from Rebelde of 5025 kHz and RHC Spanish speech
to the crowd {?Raul Castro?} on 5040 kHz. Both S=9+25 like -48dBm.

Radio Havana Cuba. At 0440 UT on Febr 19 logged Arnie Coro's usual Tuesday
feature about single sideband transmission and other matter, like actual
propagation report read at 0447 UT Febr 19.

6000 kHz proper carrier signal of S=9+25dB here in Germany, but rather
UNDERMODULATED signal feed.

More punchy signal heard by RHC Spanish section on 6060 kHz with proper
MODULATION !

// 6070 is always poor here in Europe, only S=8 signal.

Much better both - strongly carrier and modulation - of Arnie's program
noted this European morning on 6165 kHz channel.

At same time tiny Mexican Radio Educacion on nearby 6184.981 kHz, only
S=5.

CYPRUS Rock FM and religious Kanali 7 program.

I was tuned to a FM station a few times in English and - I heard your
religous programme at 09.30 pm one evening till 10 pm. I heard the
annoucer mention in Greek it was Kanali 7. Because there is also Kanali 6
is there are difference between the two stations?

98.6 Limassol area and 106.0 FM Nicosia, Famagusta, Larnaca and Paphos.
Plus 107.00 FM Paralami, Morfou, and Polis.

[later] I went onto Rock FM web site and managed to get a blog message
aired a few minutes later by lady DJ in UK accent a very nice sounding
radio station. I will try and get more info about the station as I see one
DJ and Author, is South African Paul Lambis. The station is mostly in
English a very sight in Cyprus.

I was going to tell Kanali 7 about the WRTH but didnt want to scare them
in giving information right away.

But to get a reply first. Re Directors, addresses and future plans for a
mention in the WRTH.

So lets see if there are two stations Kanali 7 and Kanali 6. I saw Kanali
web site in English and Greek a rare sight maybe we will have more English
broadcasts in the future besides some on CYBC second channel and BFBS
British Forces Radio.

Best wishes, Costa

CZECH REPUBLIC 270 Czech longwave Topolna reminder.

A reminder that there are just two weeks left for you to listen to the
Czech Republic on longwave, as it is marked for closure at the end of
February. The ending of transmissions on 270 will leave a completely empty
channel across Europe, presumably for the first time on either longwave or
mediumwave since the early days of radio.

Recently, I've noticed that they cut the transmitter for its overnight
break without ceremony either at exactly 2300 (sometimes on the very last
pip) and sometimes in the middle of the 2300 news. I don't know which
sounds more unprofessional!

Running on reduced power, it is now "only" 650 kW rather than 1.5 MW. The
directional pattern - WNW-ESE - puts the UK in the best part of the beam,
so an easy listen here on a portable in these winter evenings.
(Chris Greenway-UK, BrDXC-UK ng Febr 14)

CZECH REPUBLIC 270 The above information is probably no longer valid.

AWR KSDA Guam in En.

15215 The Radio Oeoemrang broadcast was via Nauen. The Media-Broadcast
Wertachtal site is currently moth-balled (like Skelton in the UK) - all
relays were transferred to Nauen in May 2013.

I think the Radio Oeoemrang broadcast is one of the most bizarre - a lot
of laughter in the group interview being broadcast, but despite the
English translation, I didn't understand any of the jokes, as it was in
Frisian. Pity also it was cut abruptly at 1658 UT before any closing
announcement. Are transmitter operators so hard-up for cash they cut
programmes prematurely? Or maybe it's cut automatically? Good reception
though here. SINPO 44444.
(Alan Pennington-UK, BrDXC-UK ng Febr 21)

15215, on Feb 21 at *1559 UT, strong open carrier after very weak signal
earlier, presumably VOA English via Thailand. 1559:15 UT a bit of music,
back to dead air; 1600:06 UT English sign on by Radio Oeoemrang for its
annual broadcast; mentions 500 kW using dynamic amplitude modulation
because it is very economic. Credits for funding and producing the show.
It's mainly for New York, where there are now more immigrants from the
Frisian Islands than in the home territory.

The hour mixes High German, passable English, and some segments in the
Frisian dialect(s). Host says it's an annual tradition, now it its ninth
year. Mostly interviewing local people, and explaining in English what
they are talking about. Says needs donates due to the high cost of the
broadcast; address in Nebel. Interviews woman with theatre group; 1619 UT
some facts about tourism: because of high demand, people need to book
rooms a year in advance; 1626 UT about the tradition of burning on a
woodpile a straw puppy (puppet?), made by children (which should be
tonight); later discusses an accordion group's trip to New York 25 years
ago, usw., usw. Abruptly cut off the air at 1658* UT after fragment of a
song.

Site is of course, Nauen, GERMANY. They might have managed with one of the
cheaper 100 kW units, or better yet, to just reach NY and eastern NoAM,
WRMI at a-dollar-a-minute. There was no problem here from co-channel KSDA
GUAM at 1600-1630 UT daily, but it was a big problem in Cairo, says Tarek
Zeidan. I recorded the opening and parts later, may availablize them if
someone else doesn't.

15215 Radio Oeoemrang - Nauen, at *1559-1658 UT on Feb 21, open carrier
followed by brief instrumental music before opening English ID and
announcement about the annual program. Interviews with local residents
about tourism and travels to/from the Amrum Island. Interviews by the
producer with local residents in local language but then translated
portions into English. Off rather suddenly after a song which the
announcer said he would not translate because of atmospherics. This annual
broadcast is always interesting. Fair signal with moderate noise and
fading. Unfortunately, not nearly as strong as last year's transmission.

GREECE NERIT will start broadcasts in two months.

The new Greek public radio-television NERIT and 12 regional radio stations
will begin broadcasts within the next two months, daily To Vima reported
quoting the Deputy Minister of Public Radio and Television Pantelis Kapsis
as saying in Parliament answering a question by PASOK MP Dimitris
Kremastinos about the repeated delays. Kapsis claimed that there the
recruitment procedure is fully transparent and that the three legally-
mandated stages have been strictly observed: evaluation of essential
skills and qualifications, past experience and the interview.

The Deputy Minister argued that experience was essential, since the
transition to the new broadcasting service may run into problems.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister revealed that past experience will play
an important role in the recruitment of journalists and that about 20% of
employees were recruited in positions irrespective of their
qualifications. Journalists who will join NERIT will have to have at least
five years experience.

GREECE ERT signal down?

I've been listening regularly the past few days to the Greek programming
on 7475 and 9420 kHz. The two signals (in parallel) have been pretty
steady here in Newfoundland at least for a couple of weeks and have been
carrying the same sound as the Athens programme at the ERTOpen.com site.
As seen last summer, the shortwave signal is a little behind the web
signal, just the opposite of what you'd expect if the sw b/c was coming
directly from the studio. But perhaps Avlis picks it up off the web too.
The delay is about a second normally.

This evening (it is 2315 UTC right now, Thursday 30 Jan)there is no
carrier on either frequency. I don't know when they were last on air but
they were both there last evening (Wednesday 29 Jan). The ERTOpen.com site
is still carrying the Athens programming.

I'm listening with my Grundig Satellit 750 and its whip antenna (plus a
two- or three-metre wire strung to my window from the whip).

[later Febr 13] For followers of the ERT occupation and the Avlis signals
on shortwave, there is right now (UT 2130) a concert, apparently live, on
both 7475 and 9420 kHz. Lovely sound, good rocky music (a guitar band with
a 1970s Moog synthesizer, I think). Occasional portions of the
introductory remarks are translated on stage into English; it is clear
from them that this is a broadcast of the occupiers (and not of the new
government broadcasters).

As usual, the shortwave broadcasts lag behind (by six or seven seconds)
the // on-line signal (at ERTOpen.com) of the Athens feed.

GREECE new public station NERIT will start broadcasts in two months.

We have been listening to "ERTOpen" which is the occupiers of the various
stations (and presumably the transmitter at Avlis). I know no Greek but at
the hour, and sometimes between the hours, there is an interval signal
with the identification of "Ert-Open." It will be interesting to see how
the Greek government, through NERIT, moves in on Avlis in the next two
months.

INDIA 4820/7210 AIR Kolkata SW gets lifeline. Some good (or bad?) news
on AIR Kolkata SW:

The summery of info from Joseph Martin about AIR Kolkata flashed in in
facebook is as follows:

The SW transmitter at Kolkata was scheduled to close down on 22 Feb 2014
as per orders from AIR HQ dated 11 Feb 2014.

However due to protest from AIR technical employees union (Association of
Radio & TV Engineering Employees), the same has been differed. So AIR
Kolkata SW operating with 50 kW on 4820 & 7210 kHz has got a life line for
the time being.

The correspondence is available in their website (including report
received from Australian listener!)
<http://www.arteeindia.org/>

Maybe the same case with other AIR SW Regional transmitters.

Signs of the times... Note: An article on vist to AIR Kolkata SW site by
IDXCI members is available in:

INDONESIA 4749.95 RRI Makassar. For about ten months now they have not
carried the Kang Guru Indonesia (KGI) programs in English, until today
(Feb 11). Heard at 1240 UT with bits and pieces of English, sounded like
the KGI program, but that still needs to be confirmed. Mostly in English
with some Bahasa Indonesia; played a pop song (as usual); signal slowly
improving against the QRM of China and Bangladesh; program ended 1255 UT,
so probably still close to a 1230 to 1300 UT schedule.

Certainly believe in the coming Tuesday's that Atsunori Ishida and I will
be able to confirm KGI as a regular program. KGI website -

Feb 18 (Tue.) again at 1240 UT, certainly sounded like the start of the
KGI program, but cannot say that I heard a program ID; again with bits and
pieces of English; not doing well against Bangladesh and possibly two
Chinese stations. Rather a mess and certainly tough to dig out the
English. Seemed to be a half hour show till about 1313 UT. Still needs
more work.

Costa, since you are exposed to a deception. Such an idea to serve Rwandan
people target locally by a 16-meter-band signal from Kigali former DWL
site - now by Babcock company - is an illusion, signal would skip over
their head.

But the distance MDG to Rwanda is right about 2700 kilometers and fits

TAJIKISTAN 12450 {hx of 6225} Feb 17 at 1433 UT , very poor fluttery
signal with continuous talk, no sounders, not certain if Chinese, but I
think it's likely Sound of Hope, always hopping around. Not // CNR1 on
9825, 12045 kHz et al. Figured I would find 12450 kHz in Aoki, or in
Wolfgang Bueschel's long list of monitored SOH frequencies at an earlier
hour in latest dxld, but no 12450 kHz in either.

Could it be an harmonic of something on 6225 kHz?
Yes! Aoki reminds us that one of the remaining Democratic Voice of Burma
broadcasts is there at this very hour, 1430-1530 UT 100 kW, 125 degrees
via Tajikistan. Doubt I could hear 6225 kHz to compare, but others might.
Further chex needed!

UKRAINE RUI is back!
Just checked on-line at 1529 UT Febr 24 and RUI is back with German
programming. Suspect they will be solidly on the side of the temporary
government, since the dismissal of the former regime. NRCU 1 is carrying
the Verkhovna Rada (parliament). NRCU 2 is IDing as "Promin on-line", and
also are carrying programming about the change of regimes. NRCU 3 is also
carrying information about the Kyiv Maidan. Solidly behind the present
government
now.

Listening to RUI on-line at 00:00 shows them co-channel with the 1st
National Channel (NRCU 1). That's interesting, since the opposition has
pretty much totally taken over in most parts of the country. I was
expecting some new programming, but nothing yet. Just a cultural program
about Tatar invaders from ancient times. Meanwhile, the TV channels on-
line are full of showing the excesses of the deposed president (a lot like
Sadam Hussein, IMHO). 24 Kanal, 5.ua, and Radiosvoboda.com, Spilno-TV all
have 24hrs/7d video feeds. Fascinating to watch!.

UKRAINE 657 Leonid Cultuclu in open_dx:
MW PB-#496 transmitter Chernivtsi 657 kHz closed in Januar 2014
already.abgeschaltet.

<http://www.evz.ro/detalii/stiri/evz-chisinau-ucraina-in-razboi-cu-radioul-programele-romanesti-de-la-rui-au-fost-suspend-1079760.html>

EVZ capital. Ukraine in the war with the radio !
Romanian programs were suspended from RUI.

As of January 29, 2014 under the direction of Taras Avrahov, CEO of The
National Radio Company of Ukraine were suspended Romanian language
broadcasts of radio station "Ukraine-International" which was broadcast on
medium wave frequency of 657 kHz.

After several attempts to liquidate the Romanian editorial in Kiev during
the optimization and reorganization of the State National Radio Company of
Ukraine in 2013, Avrahov managed to strike this group of Romanian
journalists and editorial reduce four employees, while other newspapers
remained complete.

Romanians like salt loves Avharov an eye !

Attempts to abolish editorial NRCU Romanian language started since last
fall, when the company's management addressed a letter to the State
Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine with a request
to be transferred to this editorial from Chernivtsi Regional State in the
Company television and radio, where there is already a Romanian newsroom,
and the second would be superfluous, to be gradually abolished. Then he
addressed the country's leadership editorial staff asking to intervene to
resolve the problem created positive.

To locate faults, Taras Avrahov, who loves Romanian and conspicuous,
signed an order that delegated the head of the security service of the
National Radio Company of Ukraine and his deputy to come to Chernivtsi and
to pursue what time Romanian journalists come to work and you go home.
Psychological and emotional attacks on Romanian journalists who come
"hidden" from Mr. Avrahov led to several journalists wish to resign, can
not support the regime imposed by this character, and intimidation on his
part.

He made "economy" budget.

In // he continued efforts to dismantle Romanian broadcasts. Without
announce editorial staff, general manager NRCU addressed a letter to the
corporation broadcasting and television-radio from Kiev, demanding closure
PB-#496 transmitter that broadcasts on medium wave transmitting 657 kHz,
including radio broadcasts "Culture" and of editorial programs in Romanian
radio station "Ukraine - International". Thus, allegedly, would make large
budget savings.

As of January 29, 2014 was off the transmitter and thus were suspended 2
hours, 25 minutes shows in Romanian. Basically, NRCU reduced by 60% its
programs in Romanian language radio station "Ukraine-International". The
staff editorial is outraged and concerned that the country's leadership
fails to stop these transgressions invented and made by the Director
General of NRCU.

Official protests

Reaction and the decision of the State Committee of Ukraine television and
radio remains misunderstood by Romanian journalists in Ukraine. In these
situations, when the day Romanians in Ukraine are increasingly downtrodden
and restricted rights by some officials who are in charge of such
institutions, collective editorial appeals to President Viktor Yanukovych,
and the bodies in charge of audio - visual, to stop the persecution of
journalists Romanian.

U.K. 1458 kHz. The newly acquired former Sunrise Radio frequency by Lyca
Media has begun testing this afternoon.

BizAsia can also confirm that Sunrise Radio veterans Ravi Sharma and
Sarita Sabharawal have joined the new station, leaving Dr Avtar Lit's
business after more than twenty years working for him. This will be a
major blow to Lit who was hoping to retain the two popular presenters for
his own Sunrise Radio on the ex-Buzz Radio frequency on 963 and 972 AM.

The new frequency has not officially be named as of yet. The station is
using just a "1458 kHz on MW" strap. Similarly, the former Kismat Radio
frequency is playing back to back music with inserts of "1035 kHz on MW"
jingles in-between.

The pilot show this afternoon was a test-run before official programming
begins on the stations in the next few days. BizAsia understands that the
stations are awaiting approval from Ofcom before regular transmission
starts. After a sale of a station, it is normal practice for Ofcom to do
final checks to approve a licence transfer to a new owner.

Earlier this week, Lyca Media was confirmed as the new owner of Sunrise
Radio Limited (1458AM), Kismat Radio Limited (1035AM) and a slew of other
stations in London. Lit has only one station in his possession, which was
formerly Buzz Asia and now rebranded to Sunrise Radio on 963 and 972AM.

USA 11785 WINB schedule change March 1st.

Re Alan's note on WINB changes:
I have a log entry from 29 June 1963 at 22:35 hours (local time I guess)
on 11.785 Mc/s. I must have misheard the call sign because I noted it as
WIND (I had no way to check this in those days) but I listened to "Mail
Call" and heard ID at 23:00 "WIN(B) Box 88, Red Lion, Pennsylvania USA.
Then "The Mr and Mrs Show". I hadn't heard of SINPO but noted: Volume - Q.
Poor, Tone - Fair, Interference - others and fading, Tuning - Hard. The
set used, I think, was a Rodgers Majestic, valve of course, and a random
wire out of the bedroom window.

My log taking was even worse in then and that is all I noted but perhaps I
became one of those inspired listeners.

WINB is broadcasting to the world from the state of Pennsylvania on the
east coast of the United States. Located in the town of Red Lion, WINB
came on the air in October 1962, which makes us the United States' oldest
private shortwave station. Since that time we have informed, entertained,
and inspired listeners in over 120 countries.
