TONY'S 10 METRE BAND REPORT - March 26, 2015

March 26, 2015

9Q0HQ (Congo) just about takes top DX for the week, certainly for the weekend.

Other DX about was E30FB (Eritrea), 9N7CC (Nepal), 7QAA (Malawi), CV5A (Uruguay) to mention but a few.
I managed the Falklands, Madeira and a few US stations. Not a great deal of activity for me.

Mark, G4SKO , just missed last week’s deadline so here is his report now.
“Sunday, quite a mixed bunch, lots of Caribbean and North America along with Europeans so I won't bore you with callsigns. Just to say there was an eventful Aurora last night, worked into Wales and the North East with Auroral distortion on both. I heard a couple of Scottish stations but had no joy raising either. A couple of Scandinavian beacons were also strong via Aurora, all good fun and it's been a while since I worked via the Northern lights on 10 meters. Keep up the great work Tony and 73 for now.”

That’s fine Mark, let us know what antenna and kit you’ve got.

Arnie, CO2KK , said of last Friday, “Band was dead here at 1400 UTC. Very low solar activity taking its toll ... not even one beacon heard this morning local time.” Keep trying though, we need more stations from Cuba on. And also Arnie let us know what kit you have.
Mike 2E0YYY had a very productive Thursday. He worked EA2DT 4/1, ZS1AN 5/7, GW0DSP 5/5, TT8FC 5/9, G4OBK 5/2, PY2WK 5/5, LU7CAW 5/5, J69MV 5/6 and 8P6AW 5.
“Last Thursday was on one of my regular visits to North Wales and as the wx forecast was good, I decided to make my way home via SOTA summit GW/NW-070 Great Orme, in LLandudno. Conditions were ideal for operating portable, with zero wind and lovely sunshine. The 10m band conditions were not quite so favourable, however, what I did work was very rewarding. Signing as 2W0YYY/P, in about 40 minutes of calling, my CQ attracted just nine takers. DX included, South Africa, Barbados, St. Lucia, Brazil, Argentina and catch of the day TT8FC Francisco, in Chad.”

Many, many years ago. I went up the Great Orme. I think it had a narrow gauge railway.
Saturday Steven, 2E0NHR worked UM1M 5/9, UA4M 5/9, RZ3Q 5/9, RJ4P 5/9, 9K2HQ 5/9, HA3DX 5/9, TC2C 5/9, NP2X 5/9 (new country for me!), PX5E 5/9, CN2R 5.
He says, “Hi Tony at last I managed to get some 10m work in over the Russian DX contest.” There were lots of them on PSK. Sunday he bagged ZY2B 5/9, RO4I 5/9, IT9AST 5/9, CT9/R9DX 5/9 and PS2T 5/9. He adds, “I heard ZS1VV 5/7-8 and would have loved to have got this one in the log...but he couldn’t hear me at all..one day though.”
Indeed, that’s what keeps us going, so tantalisingly close.

Sun: 8 sunspots today. For the 6th day in a row, a high-speed solar wind stream is buffeting Earth's magnetic field. Intermittent geomagnetic storming around the Arctic Circle has sparked some beautiful auroras.

Last week the Solar eclipse over much of Europe and the UK was well observed except where I live in London. About an hour after the eclipse had passed the sky cleared. I took the opportunity to listen for Radio Scotland on 810kHz nothing till about 09:00 then it came through up to a good S5-6 at 09:30 and gone by 10:00. Lack of sun makes communicating on longer waves easier.

Stoke lost to Crystal Palace 1 – 2. A poor game not helped by the referee. No match this week.
