Turnkey project with transmitters and antennas to be installed for TDA at
Bechar and Ouargla sites.

Ampegon has received a major contract by Telediffusion d'Algerie (TDA) for
development and installation of new shortwave transmission systems,
enabling TDA to broadcast SW without purchasing airtime from third party

Ampegon has been selected within a restricted international call to tender
as supplier. The company had already successfully installed multiple
projects in Algeria. In 2014, Ampegon in cooperation with Transradio
replaced the 1.5 MW longwave transmission systems near Tipaza and is
presently modernizing two mediumwave transmitter stations in
Bechar 576 kHz and Oulet Fayed 891 kHz.

Ampegon will accompany TDA through the entire project - developing turnkey
solutions at the two sites including two 300 kW shortwave transmitters,
two shortwave antenna systems and civil works. All the antenna works will
be carried out by Ampegon in Schifferstadt, Germany, while the
transmitters will be designed and constructed at the Ampegon factory in
Turgi, Switzerland. The multi-million Euro project will be finished within
two years at the end of 2016.

Telediffusion d'Algerie Opts for Ampegon

Algerian broadcaster Telediffusion d'Algerie has enlisted Switzerland-

Ampegon will develop turnkey solutions at both sites including two 300 kW

project is estimated to be completed at the end of 2016.

Ampegon, in cooperation with Transradio, previously installed a 1.5 MW
longwave transmission system in Algeria near Tipaza, and is presently
modernizing two medium-wave transmitter stations in Bechar and Oulet Fayed.

DRM on Shortwave To Be Demonstrated During HFCC Conference in Brisbane.

Australia has welcomed delegates this week to the latest HFCC conference
(happening between Aug. 24 and 28) in Brisbane. Representatives of some
the world's leading international broadcasters will meet to facilitate the
scheduling of analog and digital (DRM) transmissions in the shortwave
frequency bands.

Representatives from Ampegon AG, Continental Electronics and Babcock
International, key members of the DRM Consortium, will be attending this
conference and each will give an update on DRM developments, along with
the new India-made DRM receiver, according to DRM news.

Delegates will have the opportunity to sample the quality of digital radio
during the live DRM transmissions on short-wave from Radio New Zealand and
KTWR, Guam.

KTWR plans to transmit dual DRM stereo programs (using xHE-AAC) over SW
with live demos on at least two xHE- AAC capable receivers.

RNZI will broadcast from midday to 1255, nearly continuous from 1400-1640,

4885 Aug 27 at 0211 UT, very poor carrier with talk. It's been weeks
since either Brazilian has been detected, so one of them is evidently
back, probably not R. Clube do Para, which when on had a much better

FRANCE Checked today 15560 kHz at 10 minutes time span 1754-1803 UT,
on Sunday Aug 30th.

This DWL French Issoudun outlet was not as strong as always here in

Like S=8-9 strength.

DWL French WeAfrican music song program ended suddenly at 17.59:02 UT
and a single second later at 17.59:03 UT the TDF TX at ISS cut-OFF,

but exact 1 minute later,
TX came on air again at 18.00:03 UT

- same signal strength,

so supposedly same TX at TDF ISS in use for Radio Biafra shortwave relay,
maybe different antenna azimuth angle?

15560 kHz on Aug 27 at 1943 UT [non]. JBA carrier with Doppler flutter
during very disturbed propagation conditions, but it must be the new SW
service of Radio Biafra, clandestine, the one which had been on FM only
but really bothering the powers that be in Nigeria. I wonder how much of
it, if any, is in English.

Tnx to Jose Miguel Romero for the story:

"BreakingNews 27/8/15 - Clandestine Radio Biafra Now Broadcasting Across
Most Africa. Masterweb Reports

Radio Biafra has launched a satellite television dubbed Biafra Television
and a shortwave (SW) radio that will cover most Africa and beyond.

According to the clandestine station, the frequency of the broadcast is
15560 kHz in the 19 meter band and hours of broadcast for the time being,
7.00-9.00 am and 7.00-9.00 pm Nigerian time. The station still broadcasts
on FM, satellite and Internet, even though Nigeria National Broadcasting
Commission (NBC) claim they have blocked them on FM and satellite, and
would also do the same on Internet.

Briefing Journalists last month after a meeting between officials of
Ministry of Information and President Buhari, Dr. Shade Yemi-Esan,
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information said:

"Right now the signals from radio Biafra have been jammed successfully by
NBC. The commission is also working with security agencies to get those
that are behind that radio because it is an illegal radio. It is not
licensed by anybody to be on the airwaves in Nigeria." Nnamdi Kanu, Radio
Biafra Director in a statement posted on their website, described their
shortwave radio as "Nuclear War Head". It is unbelievable that Radio
Biafra that is supposed to have had its wings clipped by NBC is now not
only broadcasting in the South East and Niger Delta but now sending its
air waves across Nigeria and Africa. Has NBC lost the air wave war with
Radio Biafra?

The answer will be known with what happens in the next few day[s] "The
story is illustrated with a young opposite-gender couple embracing, but
not clear who they are. The local times given in UT+1hr correspond to UT:
06-08 and 18-20.

It's likely that the site is Issoudun, FRANCE, which is on 15560 kHz to
Africa immediately prior to both broadcasts (but Deutsche Welle relays had
then been scheduled, presumably, as backup/alternatives, surely out of the
way for this).

France, near Monaco. The power is 40 kW, schedule 0600-2000 (local time)
so 0500-1900 UT in Winter and 0400-1800 UT in Summer. Also 24 hours a day
in MONACO ({rather FM band transmitter in Jardin Exotique, 100 watts [?
Also 1467 kHz?]). And since July 2015 also on Digital Radio with DAB+ Bloc

Note that in the evening TransWorld Radio use 1467 kHz from ROUMOULES,
some 150 km north from Col de la Madone. Transmitters, both on MW, FM and
Digital Radio belong to Monte Carlo Radiodiffusion (MCR) and according to

Re: UNID 1647 kHz. France Info, Col de la Madonne, Peille, France.

1557 + 90 = 1647 kHz intermodulation.

Wobei die 1467 kHz ja nicht vom Col de la Madonne, Peille, kommt, sondern
aus Roumoules France, wo auch die 216 kHz steht. (s. <>

PAKISTAN Radio Pakistan to go off air in favour of sports complex.

Quetta: The Balochistan government has finalised a plan to take over
64 acres of land owned by Radio Pakistan in Quetta by shutting down the
station's transmission, removing its machinery and transmission towers
from the Sariab area.

On Wednesday, sources confirmed that government officials had been
directed to put finishing touches on the plan to take over land worth
billions of rupees belonging to the radio station. Sources claim that the
land was being taken over under the pretext of constructing a sports
complex and park.

Also read: Radio Pakistan woes "You will not be able to listen to local
shows or programmes in other languages from Radio Pakistan Quetta," said a
senior Radio Pakistan official while talking to IDawnI. "The government is
going to remove the transmission towers and other machinery from the land
on Sariab Road. It was allotted to Radio Pakistan in 1964.

"He added that by using this piece of land for a sports complex would be
like gagging the voice of the station as it would be take several shows,
including those on recitation of the Holy Quran and other popular
programmes in different languages, off the air.

According to the station's senior official, when a government official was
asked about why they wanted these 64 acres, he replied: "Some people have
had their eyes set on this precious land for a long time. They want to
take over the land by claiming to build a sports complex even though
Quetta already has a large sports complex [Ayub Stadium]."

The station was set up in Quetta in 1956 on 64 acres on Sariab Road. In
1959, Radio Pakistan installed medium-wave and short-wave transmitters on
the property so the station's programmes could be heard all over the

Radio Pakistan Quetta had installed 93.5 kilowatt transmission on the site
before Ramazan this year, and had launched an FM transmission, "Sout-ul-
Quran", for programmes related to recitation of the Holy Quran and Islamic

An official of Radio Pakistan expressed fears that if the provincial
government decided to go ahead with the plan, these transmissions and
shows would have to be taken off the airwaves.

A government official said the Shahwani Sports Stadium constructed by the
government had the capacity for building a new sports complex and was
located close to Radio Pakistan. He said that the provincial government
also had acres of official land available on the Hazarganji and Sibi roads
linking to Sariab Road and they could construct a new sports complex there

He added that he did not know why the provincial government was insisting
on constructing a sports complex on Radio Pakistan's property. A senior
official of the radio station said the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation
should take notice of what was happening in Quetta and ask the federal
government to release funds to install powerful transmitters and other
equipment to enable Radio Pakistan Quetta to air its programmes for
listeners across the province.

Radio Damascus from Spanish section.jpg

Radio Damascus 783 kHz verified an electronic follow up, including
original recording as mp3-audio file, with f/d eQSL accompanied by
friendly message in two days. V/S: Amalia Puga.

Mrs Puga says that due to "the difficult situation of the country" (this
appears to me as an euphemism) short wave transmissions were suspended and
that programmes can be followed on Facebook. She also says that for the
time being reception reports are verified only by eQSL.

It should be mentioned that my follow up was sent to the Spanish section
of Radio Damascus address:
<radiodamasco -at->
as my original report was about listening of a programme in Spanish over
30 years ago, on 5th July 1984. If my memory doesn't fail, at that time,
just as today, shortwave transmissions from Syria were unavailable and the
only opportunity to listen to a programme in a foreign language was on
home service medium wave frequency of 783 kHz which Radio Damascus used
late in the night also to air its Spanish programme.

USA I think Jeff may be in Australia preparing for the upcoming HFCC
meetings, so I'll step up to the plate. Your surmise is correct: the
antenna used for the Cuba transmissions on 5950 kHz has a high take-off
angle of 45 degrees and a horizontal beamwidth of 90 degrees. Azimuth is
181 degrees, so that the footprint just nicely brackets Cuba. The main
function in life for that antenna is to service Cuba.

USA 7490 Radio Alexandria via WBCQ, Monticello-ME, at 2340-2358 UT on
Aug 19, tuned in to hear a male announcer - later identified as Rollin B.
Hunt, talking about Radio Alexandria's plans for a ship to broadcast over
shortwave radio in the Pacific region. Also, covered Fermi Paradox and
promoted shortwave portable receivers. Later called this the North
American Service of Radio Alexandria. This was new to me, never heard this
guy before. Quite an interesting character. Good signal.

QSL USA 7490, Radio Alexandria via WBCQ verified an electronic report
with an electronic reply in 1 day (actually in about two hours) from Allen
Hundley, Project Manager in Madison-MA, who mentioned: "At this time we
don't have QSL cards but I will send you a letter and several buttons per
your request. I also started listening to shortwave many years ago during
the vacuum tube era. A lot has changed since then but there are still some
very interesting programs on the shortwave bands. I like to think The Next
Chapter is one of them and the mail we've received has been universally
positive and supportive.

USA WHRI on 17610 kHz. Today Sat Aug 22 came across of 17610 religious
programs on WHRI outlet in English. see

17610 noted here in Germany at S=8-9 signal tonight Saturday in 19-21 UT
hours. Aoki Nagoya list shows opposite 315 degrees at western
US/CAN/ALS/PAC coast. But HFCC database shows 250 kW at 83degrees towards
Europe, NE/ME and North Africa/Sahara zone.

Heard at 2010 UT Sats "Seeking the Lost International",
given their ID and snail mail address at Cleanton MI USA.

At 2015 UT the women special started, "A Woman's Special Touch"

"Beacon Of Truth Broadcast" by Pastor Reuben Esh now at 2030-2100 UT.

USA 17775 on Aug 19 at 1413 UT, not even a carrier detectable from
KVOH, but presumably on, not propagating. Anyhow, KVOH is still on the
9975 kHz air despite a close call with wildfires. I had asked Ray Robinson
about that and he replied Aug 18,

"Hi, Glenn. Thanks for your concern. Yes, there have been two fires in
Simi Valley in the last 5 days or so. The first, a fairly small one, was
about a mile north of our KVOH transmitting site, but the fire fighters
quickly got a handle on it. There was no real threat to the SW site, but
it was actually closer to our FM transmitting site (KWSV, 99.1 The Ranch),
and we were concerned about that for a few hours. However, in the end
there was no problem. The second, a much larger fire, and one that has
been shown on national news, was at the other end of the valley, about 10
miles from our sites, so again no threat to either KVOH or KWSV.

We are still working hard to get the Harris 100 kW unit on the air. It has
been fully refurbished from end to end, and numerous components have been
replaced. We are still working on the electrical hook-up and on the
antenna feed line switching, but we're getting close!"

Ray also explains that the delay in Zambia is caused by a drought and lack
of reliable hydroelectric power; more details on that to come.
