ARGENTINA 11710.51 on UT Fri May 6 at 0123 UT, RAE better than usual,
about S9 with tango music during Japanese hour which likely has more
listeners in Brasil, Peru than in Japan. Had been more like 11710.6 kHz
or .7 kHz, but I see Aoki now has it on 11710.5 kHz as well.

11710.63 on May 7 at 0119 UT, RAE is S4 and JBM, unlike 24 hours ago,
and .12 kHz higher. Today's Aoki might have changed it but still shows
11710.5 as of May 6. It does vary from day to day.

11710.581 kHz measured at 2255 UT on May 9-UTC.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews May 8)

15344.909 TOTALLY DISTORTED AUDIO signal from RAE Buenos Aires, Chinese
service both talk and music parts, at 1020 UT on May 10. S=8 or -80dBm
signal heard and checked quality-wise in southern Germany, Switzerland,
and Belgium remote units.

15344.946 At 2230 UT on May 10 poor signal of RAE Buenos Aires, noted in
southern Germany, at S=6 or -94dBm level.
11710v kHz ist NOT ON AIR tonight.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews May 10)

15344.97 May 8 at 0147 UT, the ever-varying Radio Nacional in distorted
Spanish about a partido [tonto] de pelotas, mixed with some music bits,
something about 1 de la madrugada. Is on this late only UT Sun & Mon, as
same transmitter runs RAE weekdays until 0500 UT on 11710.6v kHz.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld May 8)

These Harris units vary in frequency a lot during the season:
15344.945 kHz easured at 2305 UT on May 8-UTC, only S=4 hard to copy
signal tonight. Spanish scheduled of Radio Nacional Argentina on
weekends/sundays.

15344.930 kHz measured at 2245 UT on May 9-UTC. S=7 in MA-NJ USA.

Re: ARG and comments about frequency generators for AM and short waves.

Dear amigo Wolfie,
The old equipment at General Pacheco RAE transmitting site works quite
well considering reported poor maintenance and old age...

BUT it is not the fault of a transmitter to be OFF frequency....

The problem is at the frequency synthetizer that generates the carrier
wave fed to the transmitter.

ITU specifies 10 Hertz as maximum deviation from your registered
frequency, in order to avoid co'channel beat frequencies that are very
annoying to listeners...

In the early days at RHC our Brown Boveri four transmitters used crystal
control ... with the quartz crystals contained within a thermostatically
controlled oven, just like the old AM broadcast band transmitters...

For the short wave bands , it was standard practice to use lower
frequencies to generate the carrier, followed by frequency multiplication,
to reach the desired output frequency.

Example a 2940 kHz crystal using a special low temperature drift cut, and
inside the oven, was fed to two frequency doublers to reach 11760...

Nowadays frequency synthetizers referenced to typically to a 10.000000
megaHertz frequency standard are used ...
If available you can sync the 10 MHz standard to a GPS system...

Also it is very important to have a properly calibrated frequency meter
that is constantly checked against a frequency standard, like the National
Standard Frequency System of the country... Using old tech, you can check
against WWV and WWVL, on 2.5, 5.0 , 10.0 MHz and if you have good
reception 60 kHz too...

AUSTRALIA Re: 9580 Radio Australia absent.

May 10 at 0700 UT all three on air, 15415 kHz weakest in Brisbane
Queensland remote unit, only S=6-7 fluttery, but 17840 and 15240 kHz
signals at S=9 up to +20dB. Talk on high school problems, class room
violence. Norfolk island bussiness, NSW. Similar S=9+20dB strength of

BOTSWANA Audibility of VoA English in Central Europe.
In the past few days, I checked the audibility of VoA English in Europe.
I used the data of the HFCC, because the schedule on the VoA website dates
back to 3 November 2015. The main result is that the VoA Botswana relay is
faithfully providing reception in Europe as it has done since going on the
air in 1991.

0300-0400 6080 (100 kW, 350 degr) audible
0300-0600 4930 (100 kW, 20 degr) audible at 0300 but deteriorating fast
0300-0700 15580 (100 kW, 350 degr) improving to excellent reception
1400-1700 4930 (100 kW, 20 degr) inaudible
1400-1600 6080 (100 kW, 350 degr) inaudible
1500-1600 15580 (100 kW, 350 degr), Sa Su to 1700 UT, well audible
1500-1600 17530 (100 kW, 10 degr) audible
1700-2200 15580 (100 kW, 350 degr) excellent
1800-2100 4930 (100 kW, 20 degr) inaudible
1800-2000 6080 (100 kW, 10 degr, 1830 UT 350 degr) audible
2000-2200 6195 (100 kW, 10 degr) audible.
So Europe still has about nine hours of VoA English readily available.

CHAD Yesterday, May 2nd, was the first day I noted the gap 1757-1800 UT
filled again (not checked every day though), and a carrier was signing off
at 1953* UT, with very little modulation before. Both would fit for Chad.

Not there just now, 1935 UT on May 3rd. I didn't mind the gap today,
luckily not being in a London tube station.

CHINA 11910 May 11 at 1330 UT, I'm checking again for the anomalous CRI
English programming, compared to 11900 kHz, but this time 11900 kHz is not
audible. 11910 kHz is very poor and unseems // 9570 kHz via Quivican Cuba.

11910 May 12 at 1335 UT, now I can hear both this and 11900 kHz, altho
11910 kHz is very poor; 11900 kHz is running 3 seconds ahead of Cuba
9570 kHz.

Peter W. Hanson in south Florida reminds us on the DXLD yg: "Hi Glenn,
that 11910 kHz frequency has always been different from the rest of the
CRI frequencies at 1300 UT. If I remember correctly that used to be the
REE relay on CRI. It broadcasts the Beijing Hour now instead of what's on
1008 kHz. Otherwise everything I've been able to monitor so far on the
rest of the CRI frequencies have played what is on the 1008 kHz schedule
provided by Alan Roe"

Ah, yes, when the REE relays were canceled a sesquiyear ago, 11910 kHz
stayed on the air and was immediately filled by CRI programming, which
evidently still hasn't been integrated into their full regular schedule.
So now the only SW chance to hear the once-pervasive 'Beijing Hour' show?
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld May 12)

WRTH PDF Update IR6 page shows also 9730 kHz in // ?

But heard different program on 11910 kHz at 1300 UT on May 14,

GERMANY Re: HCJB Weenermoor Germany. New 200 watt / later 3 to 5 kW at
Weenermoor, HCJB Germany,

now extended tests on 5920 kHz in 49 mb.

At Night 22 to 05 / 06 UT span, there will be a break on 5920 kHz usage,
due of WHRI co-channel, and at this time span nobody will listen to a HCJB
Program to the Grman-speaking countries in central Europe.

Re: HCJB Weenermoor Germany. Um 14.20 UT ein remote 'Rundgang' im Perseus
Netz, D, SUI, AUT, BEL, NED, HNG.

HCJB 5920.009 kHz S=7-8 on May 9, 1420 UT in Belgien und DARC Amberg
Oberpfalz, Tschechengrenze.

MADAGASCAR/BRAZIL 17640, May 13 at 1800 UT check, still no reactivation
of MWV's African Pathways Radio, which had been reactivated during its
previous airing at 0400 UT on 9480 kHz. So only one transmitter operable;
during this hour presumably in Russian on 9570 kHz, which we never hear.

9600 May 14 at 0048 UT, very poor S5 signal with music, seems gospel.
Evidently MWV is on but not propagating well this date, or underpowered.

9665 May 14 at 0100 UT, checking for MWV's next frequency, but initially
only hear Voz Missionaria, with Brazuguese talk, which at 0049 UT I had
measured on 9664.98 kHz. However, at 0120 Ut recheck, a second weak signal
is making a SAH with the ZY is on 9665 kHz, and that would be MWV.

Thank you so much Ivo for this R. Sakha helpful info. May 9, I had JBA
carrier on 7345 kHz at 0900 UT and subsequent checking through 1048 UT;
never reached the level to hear any audio; completely unusable; nothing on

Seems my May 7 reception must have had unusually good propagation, when I
heard their IS and 3 time pips at 0900 UT, which I did not hear yesterday
and are also not on your recording today. On your recording today did
faintly note the Jew's harp IS at sign off. Thanks again.

RUSSIA 7345, Radio Sakha, at 1056-1126 & 1151-1235 UT on May 10. Sounded
like Russian; 1100 UT brief IS (Jew's harp); time pips; seemed to be the
news being read for 10 minutes; 1105 UT break for "Radio Sakha" ID by
different announcer; 1110 UTad or promo and into music show playing
ballads. This station plays a lot of nice music!

Did not sign off at 1200 UTas they recently had been reported, but clearly
continued on; same format as after 1100 UT (seemed to be the news being
read for 10 minutes; 1205 UT break for "Radio Sakha" ID by different
announcer; 1210 UT ad or promo and into music show).

From 1151 to 1235 UT had increasing QRM from Thazin Radio (Myanmar), but
Radio Sakha was stronger. At 1158 UT had to go to LSB, to get away from
V26 Chinese numbers station that was on frequency in USB. Unable to tell
about 7295 kHz due to OTH radar the few times I did check.

Thanks very much to Mauno Ritola-FIN for the following:

"I also checked this today and they *continued until 1400* UT. 7345 kHz
much stronger than 7295 kHz both here and via Japan remote rx, so probably
the reported powers should are vice versa: 250 kW on 7345 kHz and 100 kW
(or even 50 kW?) on 7295 kHz."

Have to agree with him regarding the power. 7345 kHz has always been heard
many times stronger than 7295 kHz.

RUSSIA/MYANMAR/(China not) Yes anyone have offset info for Radio Sakha

(George, NJ3H, OR-USA, dxld May 12)

UNIDENTIFIED 7345, May 12 at 1221 UT, very poor carrier, so is it
Myanmar or Russia's reactivated SW station? Evidently, R. Sakha stays on
until 1400 UT on weekdays, per Mauno Ritola-FIN, until 1200 UT weekends.

Ron Howard, California, reported May 11: "At 1225 UT both R. Sakha and
Thazin Radio about equal and mixing together on 7345 kHz, with // 7295 JBA
with no QRM".

Wondering about the current SR/SS times in Yakutsk, I finally find it in
gaisma.com spelt with a J, unlike other Russian transliterations:

*2133-1204* UT as of today at latitude 62 north, equivalent to Faroe

(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld May 12)

Radio Rossii transmitter like Iakutsk usually did bcast on exact x.000 kHz
in past decades. I don't understand the offset question.

Myanmar is like 7344.9965 or 7344.996 MMR Thazin Radio, Pyin U Lwin,
instead.

The azimuth of Yakutsk were always 45 and 310 degrees to service towards
Far East / Siberia USSR / Russia.

Targets are Anadyr,
or Norilsk Jenissei, far northern Russia.

12 UTC end of transmission in Iakutsk
= 21 hrs local time at Iakutsk.
= 24 hrs local time at Anadyr Magadan.

U.K. Babcock HF sender broadcast station in Woofferton, 15510 kHz,
verified an electronic report in 16 days with a N/D friendly message and
picture of the transmitter site. "Hello, Thank you for your report and I
confirm the details are correct. These transmissions were to fault-find on
a 250 / 300 kW sender at the UK HF transmitter station at Woofferton.
These duration of these tests can be variable as the engineers can
sometimes need a long time to establish a fault or they may interrupt the
test, make an adjustment and resume. This is particularly so if the fault
is of an intermittent nature.

Babcock, Woofferton is the only remaining UK HF sender broadcast station
and also is the only one with this transmission test audio and email
address. The audio is contained in a file play-out system and incorporates

frequency as low as 3944.204 kHz. On 7260 kHz one must also beware of
listed Mongolia at 0655-1500 UT.

Via Mike Terry and Jose Miguel Romero2, RNZI has reported that there is a
100-day plan ending July 1 to return RV to its "former glory of nationwide
coverage" by somehow upgrading shortwave, but a problem is informing the
public of the correct frequencies to tune rather than spotty FM coverage,
not to mention using SW receivers at all (WRTH 2016 shows the national
broadcaster has only two low-power MW frequencies, one of which is off,
and two even lower-power FMs at the same locations as MW).

RNZI: "New Zealand radio transmission engineer, Steve White, has made
several trips to Vanuatu and other Pacific countries to help set up
transmission equipment. He says the big advantage of short-wave radio is
that receivers are extremely cheap to buy. Mr White says the other benefit
is that the transmission is capable of covering enormous distances.

STEVE WHITE: From Port Vila you can cover the entire country of Vanuatu,
which spans something like 1100 kilometres in a roughly North-South
direction, that can't be achieved by any other transmission mode".
