ARGENTINA/[Canada relay]   Radiodifusion Argentina Al Exterior Buenos
Aires extends its English program also on weekends, - soon on end
of May 2016.

The English service of Radiodifusion Argentina al Exterior (RAE) says that
it is reorganising its programmes and that, from the end of the month, it
will broadcast seven days a week instead of only from Mondays to Fridays.

It is not clear from the station's announcements whether this will apply
to other language sections as well. RAE says that, until the changes come
into force, its English broadcast will consist only of the news and music.

BHUTAN   6035.054  BTN  odd frequency BTN BBS Bhutan BS, Thimphu,

nothing heard here on remote SDR unit in eastern Thailand loc.  - b u t  -

6035  Thanks much for Wardale tip via F_B SWL Global, heard Bhutan
crashing in via Twente SDR. Strong enough and seemingly only station on
frequency that I went downstairs and tuned the WJ to 6035 kHz and actually
did hear a carrier just above the local noise level here 2218 UT and still
holding well past 2230 UT on May 27. Straight local music. A fantastic DX
event in these days of waning shortwave.

6035.001 kHz exact on May 27 / 28.
Thanks to the tip in BrDXC-newsgroup tonight, observed on May 27 at 23 UT
on exact 6035.001 kHz. So the Thomson TX has been repaired now again of
the engineer from India ?, I guess after break down early April ?

BHUTAN  SW radio history:

BHUTAN   Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) recently awarded Thomson for
the supply and installation of new shortwave transmitting equipment to
modernize its Sangaygang Station and improve the nationwide service.

Scope of delivery includes the DRM ready Thomson 100 kW shortwave
transmitter TSW 21OOD, Thomson Skywave 2000 DRM frontend equipment Stratus
(DRM Modulator/RF Exciter) and Cirrus (DRM Encoder/Multiplexer), a new
quadrant antenna HQ 1/0.3, 5/6 MHz, 300 Ohm as well as station
auxiiiaries.

BBS will be broadcasting on the frequencies 5035 kHz, 6035 kHz, and 7500
kHz. The existing 50 kW shortwave transmitter, installed and taken into
operation at Sangaygang by Thomson in 1988, is still being used. The
Sangaygang Station is located 2660 m above sea level, close to the capital
city Thimphu.

With an area of 47'000 square miles an a population estimated at around
750'000 inhabitants, more than 90% of Bhutan's population is living in
rural areas. The terrain is mostly mountainous, making a widespread FM
coverage very cost-intensive. A total of nine FM stations are located
around the urban areas. Thus shortwave is clearly the most important media
for nationwide coverage. BBS broadcasts in Zhongka and Nepali, the two
main local languages.

Thomson won this project against international competition, whereby a main
decision factor was the excellent after sales service offered by Thomson
since 1988 and the trust put in the company's proven digital DRM
expertise.

The new equipment is scheduled to go on air beginning of 2007.

Bhutan Broadcasting Service new 100 kW Txer Inaugurated.

Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation inaugurated the new 100 kiloWatt
THOMSON TSW 2100D DRM short wave radio transmitter on 10th August, 2007.

The inaugural ceremony of the installation of the new transmitter was
attended by the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Sudhir Vyas. Also present
were the Information and communications minister, Lyonpo Leki Dorji and
other government officials.

Addressing the gathering, the information and communications minister
Lyonpo Leki Dorji said Bhutan being a mountainous country with rugged
terrain, isolated and inaccessible settlements and far flung communities,
BBS radio remains the most powerful medium to inform, educate and
entertain the masses.

Speaking at the function, the Managing Director of the Bhutan Broadcasting
Service Corporation, Mingbo Dukpa said Radio and TV are powerful tools of
communication. He said any development to further enhance the capacity of
the broadcast media marks an important milestone in the development of the
country.

BBS radio has come a long way since it was established as an amateur radio
station in 1973. BBS Radio today broadcast 100 hours of News and Programs
in 4 languages in a week.

The short wave transmitter was installed with financial support from the
Indian Government.

This DRM capable 100 kW transmitter was installed in Sangaygang, 2660
meters above sea level and test transmissions were already going on. One
of the station engineer informed that transmitter was not being operated
on DRM mode due to problem with the RF Exciter. However the same has been
rectified & they are having occassional DRM tests during txn b/down times
with power output of only 25 watts.

BHUTAN   Broadcasting in Bhutan. Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS)
on 6035 kHz SW.

The 30 kW replacement transmitter at Sangaygang was regularly heard
throughout Bhutan, although with many breaks. The 100 kW transmitter
awaits repair by an Engineer from India.

Heard in Bhutan at *0000-0050 and 1019-1240 UT, Apr 22-27, with many
attempts to get on the air with the usual programmes of a Buddhist Morning
Mass, Dzongkha talks and national songs. Heard // 88.1, 96.0 and 98.0 FM.
I took photos of the BBS Studio building and SW transmitting antenna.

BHUTAN   6035  Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS), Sangaygang, Thimphu,
0203-1028 UT on Nov 20, 21 and 22, 2013, local language, Nepali, English
from 0830 UT, incl. discussion on "Salt Business", then some anns, English
songs aired, Listeners Calls with music requests, dedications and music
mostly English Songs aired, good reception with slight noise and hum.

I was surprised when I heard BBS in English on 6035 kHz after a long break
and I thought that BBS might have discontinued SW transmission and there
is no possiblity of resumption of its SW analog transmission in future.
Anyway, let me monitor in coming days whether it is a regular comeback or
something else. Please check my blog for more detail report plus links to
audio files ...

CUBA   60 meters Cubans.

All three Cuban stations on 60 meters are awol tonight. No sign of Radio
Rebelde 5025, RHC 5040, or Radio Progresso 4765 kHz. There is a station on
5025 kHz w/a very weak and distorted signal. The static levels are very
high, so it is difficult to even ID the language of the station. I believe
that it is in Spanish so it possibly could be Peru, R. Quillabamba, as the
style of program doesn't fit with what I have heard from Rebelde in the
past. Signal disappeared at 0206 UT after brief announcement by om and a
minute of silence, I am still hearing Havana on several 49 meter band
frequencies tonight.

Radio Free Gambia was observed with its Friday-only broadcast on 15465 kHz
from 1900 UT sign-on till abruptly off in mid-sentence at 1956 UT, on 20
May 2016. Programming consisted entirely of a long talk in an UNIDentified
language (no music) starting with Islamic greetings - if there was an ID
in there I didn't recognise it as such. Occasional English phrases such as
"civil resistance" and "passive resistance" indicate the political nature
of the lecture.
Reception was good via Global Tuner remote rx in Grenoble, French Alps.

airtime. Between them I hear a sounder which reminds me of one I heard the

but could have been VOA; see UNIDENTIFIED.

FRANCE  [to Sahel zone, CeAF, WeAF, southern Algeria]
Ten years ago, in 2006, Radio Algerienne returned to short wave
broadcasting. Obviously, decision makers in Algiers saw a need for a wider

Beginning in 2012, some news segments in Arabic and French were also
included. A monitoring project from 19 to 24 May confirmed the schedule

0500-0600  9535 (500 kW, 162 degr)
0600-0700 11985 (500 kW, 194 degr)  all via TDF Issoudun bcast center
relay

(1) All frequencies were audible in Central Europe, although with some
fading.

(2) Interestingly, monitoring showed that there are two clearly separated
streams in the morning. At 0500 hrs UT 7295 and 9535 kHz were not in
parallel.

(3) Special monitoring of the entire 3-h-block showed that at least part
of the programmes is pre-recorded.

On 24 May 2016 an identical programme was broadcast 0500-0600 hrs UT
on 9535 kHz and 0600-0700 hrs UT on 11985 kHz.

This programme hour was the only one to include French. At the beginning
of the hour there was French news about Western Sahara, Nigeria and Sudan.
At about :47min there was a short religious segment in Arabic and French.
At :55min an announcement of the schedule broke into the programming. Sign
off was at about :58min.

(4) Although I do not understand Arabic there seem to be 15 minute
programmes included in the stream that remind me of Christian quarter hour
programmes ("a hymn and a thing") with a musical introduction, an
introductory announcement a talk possibly with a musical interlude,
closing announcement.
(Prof. Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews May 23)

All these transmission are via TDF Issoudun, FRANCE; TDA are supposedly
building two SW sites of their own inside Algeria, and continue to
register imaginary frequencies and schedules for them with HFCC,
designated ORG and BEC, with no real signs of progress. What's DZ?
Apparently HjB likes to use license-tag abbrs. instead of ITU country
designators.

GERMANY   former 575 / 576 kHz SDR/SWR 273 meters tall MW mast.

zukommen.

Re: Voice of Greece 9420.005 and 9935.000 kHz at 18-19 UT on May 23.

Also good reception here in New Brunswick-CAN on both frequencies
at 2050 UT. 9420 kHz slightly stronger. And, via the Twente receiver,
both 9420 and 9935 kHz are peaking at 50 over S9.
(Richard Langley-NB-CAN, dxld May 23)

9935.000  Never heard so an clear signal of Voice of Greece from Avlis
site, as at 0215 UT on May 22, much stronger as S=9+20dB or -51dBm
strength, exact on frequency, no buzz, no whine, very clear signal
quality. And changed the antenna direction too from 285 to 323 degrees ?

9420.005  Usual Avlis signal, much Greek folk song program in progress,
at 0220 UT on May 22 was a little less strong, as S=9+5dB or -61dBm.

9935.001  Voice of Greece, Avlis, Greek sce, supposedly via 3rd TX unit,
which had been repaired recently ? :  exact on frequency, no buzz, no
whine distortion, very clear signal quality. At 0405 UT on May 24 on air -
but when checked at 0440 UT was OFF. S=9+20dBm strong or -52dBm, little
stronger signal here in southern Germany // 9420.005 kHz lower S=9+5dB.

But when checked at 0440 UT on May 24 again 9935 kHz unit had left for
exact 11645-even kHz S=8-9 signal.

Greece replaced 9420.005 kHz by
9935.000 exact even kHz at 'around' 1950 / 2000 UT on May 25.
They have repaired the 3rd TX at Avlis now ?

9420.006  VoGRC at 2300 UT and 04-05 UT May 26, and 11645.000 kHz even
also at 0440 UT - not 9935 kHz -, latter hit heavily by Sudanese R Dabanga
program on 11650even kHz of CVA VR Santa Maria di Galeria in Vatican
State.

11645 kHz is S=9+15dB strength in Moscow Russia at 0530 UT on May 26, so I
guess the southern Africa antenna is in use at Avlis, this backlobe signal
is always strong in European Russia.

MONGOLIA   re Babcock testing on MW 1431 kHz.

Babcock will be testing a high-power mediumwave transmitter in Mongolia on
1431 kHz for the next four nights at 1430-1830 UT. The exact time range
might vary. It might be 1300-1700 UT or 1500-1900 UT. There might also be
tests outside those hours.

But to confirm, this will be on the 25th to 28th May inclusive. It is
hoped that it will be audible in Korea and northeast China. The tests will
identify as being from Babcock. Perhaps any DXLD friends in Japan will be
able to hear it? I hope so.

Re: [mwdx] MONGOLIA. DX test on 1431 AM this week.

Hi All, When Mongolia ran English on 990 kHz back in the early 90s their

This test may also be very directional. Tony VK2IC
(Tony Magon-AUS, mwdx May 24)

DX test on 1431 kHz AM this week.

I hope those of you with foreign contacts (or even in the States), can
help spread the word about this DX test for me. I'm not part of those MW
and SW groups like many of you - or else I wouldn't be posting this on
this list here - so any help would be appreciated. This station is
targeting Korea from Mongolia; anyone in DXer-heavy Japan would be most
helpful, though my contacts are rather limited there

* DX TEST ALERT / Please share with other groups

I want to spread the info about a MW DX test this week that I am helping
with (especially those with Asian contacts, please re-post). The
engineers need any help they can get, primarily recordings to see how the
station is getting out. The guidelines for the test are below:

* Date/Time: May 25-28 1300-1700 UT
* Frequency: 1431 (power will likely be between 100-500 kW)
* Location: Mongolia with a target audience of South Korea
* Send recordings to  <C0000112 -at- aol.com>  or upload to

<https://www.dropbox.com/request/gXQDEsPBCtGiuXn4UcIb>

* Recording preferences: MP3 format, mono, no less than 32kbps, and no
longer than 30 minutes

* File name should be the sender's initials (example: mine would be
"CK" ) - day - time.mp3 (for May 24 at 1am: "ck-24- 0100.mp3). If
uploading to the Dropbox, please send an e-mail to the above address
stating your listening location as well.

* If possible, do not set the receiver bandwidth to be narrow, but wide
AM (at least 6 kHz for example).

I hope we can get some help for these engineers who made the journey
halfway around the world to set up this test.
(Chris Kadlec, South Korea, May 23, WTFDA gg via Glenn Hauser dxld)

Very interesting, but a few details are missing, like WHO is behind this?
Probably religious, Mormon? Or USG? Mongolia is already a secret relay
site on SW for Radio Free Asia. Is this really for North Korea? 1431
looks like a good choice in the region, with no hi-power stations on it
per WRTH, nothing greater than 10 kW in east Asia, 40 kW in Kyrgyzstan.
And WHERE in Mongolia is it? A big country. Here's another introduxion to
it: (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld May 24)

Good afternoon! This is a copy and paste from a Facebook group mostly of
broadcast engineers. I was one. Tom / Doc.

I hope you guys will grant me an exception for a post void of transmitter
photos - we're trying to get some help in a DX test here in Asia (high
enough power that it may be heard on the west coast) and frankly, a group
of avid radio fans and engineers most likely to help fellow engineers
test their transmitter(s) tends to get the word out best.

MONGOLIA   25-28 May at 1300-1700 UT scheduled test transmissions on 1431

reports of, which must be sent to  <C0000112 -at- aol.com>  or upload link

What kind of program will be transmitted, it is not informed, perhaps
someone from the American religious broadcasters. Wolfgang Bushel suggests
that there will be use medium wave transmitter in Choibalsan 1350 kHz at
500 kW, coordinates 48 00 02.70 N  114 26 17.42 E.

This transmitter was used Moscow radio transmissions in the direction of
Beijing in 1984-1992 gg. From 2009 IBB is used for Voice of America and
Radio Free Asia.

Yes, confirmed by well-placed source. Well, no doubt BBC would allow both
North and South Koreans to listen to it, but I wonder which dialect they
will prefer?

My comments on the other masts / frequencies at the site were only based
on a satellite view apparently annotated by wb.

New country logged from Seoul:
1431 kHz, Choibalsan, Mongolia / 959 miles (1544 km) from 323 degr (NW).
Transmitter is 500 kW directional at 150 degr toward Korea, good at 35-
40dBu with peaks between 45-50dBu (a Nogizaka 46 song is giving the signal
some trouble).

This is a very good signal for such a low power [??? gh-dxld] at that
distance, successful for the fact it's one of the rare open frequencies in
East Asia.

1440 kHz Daegu (50 dBu) was throwing bleed-over interference onto 1431 kHz
for some time with Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, and others. This also
marks the first time I was harassed at my AM DX site in the 8 months I've
frequented it at night.

is presently, but he has major noise problems so the signal must have been
reasonable as he caught part of an announcement in English as well as high
and low tones. Stu also says the email address bounced!
(Theo Donnelly-BC-CAN, IRCA via dxld May 27)

For those interested, Hiroyuki Okamura of Yokosuka, Japan has posted a
video of his reception of test tones from a presumed 1431-Mongolia on his
Perseus-SDR this morning at 1250 UT. He also reported to me privately that
he was able to hear the test tones clearly on his 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380
Ultralight model at home.

(Gary DeBock-WA-USA), IRCA via dxld May 27)

Congratulations to Hiroyuki on the catch!

So great to see an international DX test organized. But speaking as the
former CPC, and someone who arranged dozens of DX Tests, I really have to
recommend that we try to include the sweep tones for use in these tests
when possible. We conducted double-blind scientific tests that deterred
the sweep tones, off-hook sounders, and related effects cut through the
noise much better than tones or even Morse Code (CW).

The tones are widely available online, and myself and others would always
be happy to provide them. We can even edit custom test material including
station identifications in Morse, voice ID?s, etc. with some notice.

Excellent job to all involved. More DX Tests, please. Foreign or domestic!

MYANMAR   7200  Myanmar Radio (Yangon Yegu) at 1306-44 UT on 14 May.
Poor/fair in Burmese with light MOR-ish Burmese pops bothered by frequent

"regular" Burmese "cowboy" music. The CNR1/RTI mash-up closes at 1300 UT,
so MR slides in most mornings.

7345  Thazin R. (Pyin U Lwin site) at 1255-1329* UT on 14 May. Looking for

but 'way too weak to distinguish it from "regular" Burmese as heard on
Myanmar Radio. Recheck on 16 May at 1246-1335 UT found CNR1 returned to
7345 kHz with TR just a mumble in the background.

SAUDI ARABIA   [Yemen Radio excile relay]  11859.999 kHz at 0427 UT
on May 24.

Exact measurement give Sana'a's Yemen Radio excile program always on lower
side of 11860 kHz channel, of 11859.999 or 11859.9995 kHz, depending of
TX1 or TX2 is used on - supposedly - 60 Hertz main power {thanks GH infor}
fed Saudi Arabia bcast center.

Tonight May 26/27 a much wider ODDITY observed:
Sana'a excile 11860.046 kHz noted at 2142 UT on May 26-UTC,
S=9+25dB here in Germany.

Nearby HQ ARS 11914.991 kHz at S=9+40dB, and 11930even kHz at S=9+15dB.

See IZ8EYP Reggio Calabria Italy remote unit screenshot 2256 to 2304 UT,
on May 26. Always odd frequency unit visible on 11860.046 kHz
(subtract 11860.060 minus wrong 14 Hz offset),
and accompanied by 2 x 60 Hz strings, indicates 60 Hz AC.

But from exact 23.00:16 UT onwards, a 2nd txion appeared in // on screen
on exact even 11860.000 kHz and also +/-50 ...  +/-100 Hz strings too,
but no audio fed heard, only 46 Hertz heterodyne BUZZ tone.

My comment of yesterday 2300 UT two minutes EVEN fq broadcast
transmission:

11860  CHINA RADIO INTERNATIONAL, 0130-0227 UT daily Nepali
500 283 Kunming-Anning CHN CRI a16

After two minutes time, at 23.02 UT the 2nd tx disappeared again.
I guess strongly the CRI engineer at Kunming Anning CHN site
checked the antenna matching unit for 'coming 0130 UT Nepali'
service ON AIR, see Aoki Nagoya list.

So, at least from 2200-0700 UT May 26 - May 27 on very odd 11860.044 ...
x.045 kHz confirm that. When started this odd unit before
2200 UT already ???

YES, Now I have it on 11859.998 kHz as before. Checked at 0745 UT May 27:

11859.998 kHz exact !!! - measured against my 'accurate' favorites to
compare 'zero beat', like RMI Okeechobee 11580.000, Kurdistan 11600.000,
BBC ASC 11770.000 kHz, and very keen Chinese engineering guys at Cerrik
Albania relay always excellent on zero beat on 11855.000 kHz - all
at 0740 UT on May 27,

options 0.391kHz / 0.48Hertz / bandwidth 1.6 kHz zoom.
Remote Perseus SDR unit in Reggio Calabria southern Italy,
or Madrid Spain.

In 70ties and 80ties the WRTH mentioned both 50 and 60Hz AC
at Saudi Arabia column.

From 23.38 UT May 25 onwards, I see both 60Hz and 100Hz strings, puzzle.
Maybe the RIZ units delivered to ARS, have European 50 Hz AC ? norm

Yemen Excile radio at 0420 UT and 0511 UT May 27,
S=9+15dB on remote SDR unit at Reggio Calabria southern Italy.

11860.0445 still similar VERY ODD fq offset as of 22 UT last night May 26
and poor string of CNR Lhasa Tibet on even 11860.000 kHz seen,
PBS Xizang in Chinese language.

11859.998 kHz at 1937 UT on May 27 S=9+5 -69dBm signal here in
southern Germany. Some string peaks visible:
60 (!) / 10 / 200 / 300 Hertz either side when checked 2004 UT.

At same time other Saudi HQ program today May 27 on
11930.000 kHz exact S=8-9 signal,
much stronger
11914.989 kHz at 19.33 UT like S=9+25dB.

11859.998  excile Sana'a radio program at 0552 UT on May 28.
S=4-5 weak heard in Doha Qatar remote unit.
Usual 60! / 100 / 200 / 300 Hertz main power strings visible.

Re: exact measurement ...

re: 11860 kHz recording of 20 May at 0858-0901 UT ... and here's the audio
for the changeover time.

Not before 0900 UT ! I'll stick to what I said yesterday: as Hansjoerg
already showed, there are two transmitters carrying Yemeni programming and
overlapping for 5-6 minutes at that time. The stronger one goes until 0901
UT on 11859.998 kHz and another started today at 0856 UT, much weaker here
and slight echo during the overlap time.

I don't dare to go to down to half Hz values on such a high frequency
with Perseus.

[later]  Yes, I replayed yesterday's recording with wider span, and it
shows +/-60 Hz spurs for the lower carrier, but not for the wider, which
probably has better mains filtering.
(Mauno Ritola-FIN, May 20 / 22 / 25)

Thanks to excellent screenshot and recording work of recorded 11860 kHz
Waterfall signal on Mauno Ritola's Perseus unit Finland, thanks to
comments of Ivo Ivanov-BUL, Glenn Hauser-OK-USA and Prof. Dr. Hansjoerg
Biener-D in past week.

In 45 years of editor work in wwdxc newsfiles, I never got any reliable
information  d i r e c t  from Saudi Arabia authorities. Saudi Arabian
news always put together like a puzzle, have got second hand(!)
information mostly via ITU, WRTH, Continental factury or RIZ Zagreb note
files. Wrong {Croatian} test music played on air when Jeddah new site
commissioned in 2010, Google Earth / Google Maps / Bings Maps /
TerraServer images etc. etc. etc.

Which countries have good political relationship with Yemen and Saudi
Arabia ?

Only Oman has reliable accurate frequency aligned shortwave transmitter
units at their disposal, in this region of the world.

When the Yemeni excile radio program use any Saudi Arabia bcast center,
either Riyadh or Jeddah - or both alternating, they CAN NEVER USE a SINGLE
transmitter throughout 24 hrs / 7 days extreme long time, so I guess there
are at least two separate shortwave transmitter units in use daily, their
use is alternately in both.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews May 22 / 23 / 24)

So I guess change TX unit - and ! antenna type ! too (wb) ...
Ivo Ivanov-BUL suggested, that the changes take place at 0600, 0900, 1800,
and 2300 UT. ... Please check them.
(Mauno Ritola-FIN, May 22)

SOLOMON ISLANDS   5020  SIBS As a comparison to NBC Bougainville, I'm

Subject: Sie fallen wie ein Kartenhaus!
Falls nicht schon anderweitig erhalten, zur Info!

OE2IKN / OE5CSP. From: DJ0GM Thursday, May 19.

seit 2014 leider fuer immer Geschichte.
