ALBANIA 9855- on July 19 at 2331 UT check, R. Tirana Albanian hour is
still humroaring atop the talk. Likewise the English service at 0144 UT
check July 20 on 9855- kHz; unusable, but at least on the air instead of
missing last night. Others have confirmed the intervening broadcasts on
the air but still defective.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld July 19)

9855 on July 22 at 0130 UT, R. Tirana is OFF tonight. I will not
speculate further on whether it's permanent or whether this imply any
repairs are being undertaken.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld July 22)

Radio Tirana Shijak frequency 7465 kHz is on air today (22nd) at 1700 UT
for the Italian service, but the VERY LOUD buzz noise is more or less
covering the audio - such as that is. It is difficult to identify what the
language is.

Also, signal strength is not as good as it should be, and is several dB
down on what it used to be. I can't see what point there is in staying on
air until the fault is rectified.

DRITA is the unused {2nd 100 kW BBEF tx} transmitter at Shijak useable,
or maybe being used for spares ?
(Noel R. Green-UK, dxld July 22)

ALBANIA 9854.969 Radio Tirana 2300 UT on July 19.

Radio Tirana 2300 UT on July 19.

9854.969 kHz Usual DISTORTED audio signal of Radio Tirana on shortwave
relay Shijak noted again tonight.

22.53:40 UT TX switch on air. Interval signal in piano/flute version.
S=9+20dB signal here in southern Germany.

But when RT interval signal played, some spurious noted downwards wide
range to 9810 kHz, also upwards up to 9864 kHz.

The female presenter heard also well strength of S=8 or -77dBm signal, but
distorted audio on Jim's location on remote SDR software defined rx net at
Rochester NY, USA, at 2323 UT.

ALBANIA 7389.971 Usual Albanian language morning service from Radio
Tirana, Albania noted again on DISTORTED audio signal.

Some main 6 x 100 Hertz 'apart distance' signal strings visible,
and also minor a lot of more 50 Hertz apart distance audio signal strings.

This is an evil broth hearing, - listen to the recording in mp3 format.

Depending of some remote SDR units antennas in use, the signal is
in S=9+10 to S=9+25dB range here in central Europe, Belgium, Germany,
Switzerland, or Italy. Checked at 0750-0820 UT on July 24.

ANTARCTICA [non] 5985, BBC, Woofferton-UK. Special transmission to
the 44 BAS scientists and researchers for the traditional Antarctic
Midwinter Solstice celebrations between 2130 and 2200 UT.

Generally, a good signal with some atmospheric noise and local static.
Also heard the // 6035.1 kHz outlet [ Al Dhabbaya UAE] which was a very
strong signal but with a slight low level het and a little high in freq.

The third outlet of 7360 kHz [Ascension] was initially unheard at 2130 UT
but came up to barely audible around 2140 UT. I have made a YouTube video
of the broadcast which also demonstrates some tuning techniques on the
Yaesu FTDX3000 transceiver. This can be found at:

ARGENTINA 15344.96 on Sunday July 17 at 1755 UT, LRA is VP at S1, but
some conversation barely perceptible as Spanish. Definitely Spanish at
1759 UT surge to S4, and algo distorted. 1800:00 UT accurate 6-pip
time signal mixing with the talk, still Spanish. By 1809 UT it's too weak
to tell language, S 0.5 on the NRD-545.

I have been trying to confirm whether the RAE English broadcast preempt
the R. Nacional relay on Sundays during the 18 UT hour, as it has been
confirmed to do on Saturdays, but not last Sunday. Ivo assumed the
17 UT hour in German is also on Saturdays & Sundays, i.e. daily.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld July 17)

ARGENTINA 15343.975 RAE Buenos Aires S=9+20dB or -53dBm signal. Latin

language 19-20 UT, presenter at 1953 UT on July 18. From 1954 UT female
Argentine singer, nice voice accompanied by Argentine guitar presenter.

At the beginning of this month we introduced many great improvements

quality web stream.

To celebrate this new chapter in our history at the start of our new
summer season, our entire crew of DJ's and technical staff a will all meet
at our Short Wave Transmission Centre in beautiful Kall-Krekel, Germany
for a group BBQ and a 3 hour live broadcast to Europe and the world!

For this special occasion we will not only broadcast on our regular
European 6005 kHz (49m band) and the 1485 AM (from Riga Latvia), but this
live show will also be relayed to the world by a 100 kW short wave
transmitter in Armenia, on 11850 kHz (25m band)!

This powerful 100kW transmitter has 12 different directional antenna
configurations and will be able to reach parts of the world outside Europe
where normally we are not received. So we intent to properly introduce
ourselves and the station to all the new listeners worldwide.

see {Radio CJSC tx operator} Gavar tx / mast image at

The 3 hour show will feature reports and details about the unique vintage
Shortwave Broadcast Centre in Kall, our transmitters, the buildings and
antenna's. We'll talk about today's Free Radio and our station -where we
come from and our big plans for the nearby future- and we'll introduce
everyone in our excellent team.

Our DJ's will tell stories -and answer questions- about their time on the
glorious radio ships and play some of their special favourite records.
It will be a fun night, a real get-together of our AM radio loving
international DJ's and our listeners. The broadcast will be mainly in
English with some Dutch, German and French as well. The music will also
bring back some wonderful Free Radio memories.

ARMENIA Radio MiAmigo via CJSC Yerevan-Gavar, test on July 17
Shortwave Service test transmission observed via Armenia

Germany's Shortwave Service observed signing-on 11850 kHz at 1700 UT
on 17 July 2016, starting with their interval signal then introductory
announcements in German & English. Localised ID as "live from
Armenia!". This was a test transmission for a Radio Mi Amigo broadcast
via CJSC Yerevan-Gavar planned for 21 July.
Very good reception via Twente remote receiver, the Netherlands.

re 11850 kHz, Radio MiAmigo via CJSC Yerevan-Gavar.

gehoert. gruss wolfgang df5sx

Only signal strength POWER of S=9+25dB was good.
The signals at SDR remotes, at DARC Amberg Bavaria, Madrid Spain, Genua
Italy and Belgium were all maximal S=9+25 dB level.

But audio was terrible and overmodulated,
of all Music Signals,
noted on all 4 remote SDR units.

Despite to state, audio of the presenter voice was fair average.

Immediatelly at 17.19 UT,
Christian - the live presenter at R700 Euskirchen Germany told me,

"I've decreased the music modulation by 3dB, should be better music
modulation quality now..."
(wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 17)

Christian an wb:

Followed by carillon chimes IS interval signal til sudden TX off at

BOLIVIA July 12 with better than normal summertime reception.

5952.42 Radio Pio Doce, at 0131-0156 and 0209-0230* UT on July 12. Pop LA
songs; brief sports coverage with sound of the crowd in the background;
0228 UT usual sign off format with very distinctive whistling "Colonel
Bogey March" (commonly known as the River Kwai March); along with clear
IDs; followed by chimes till off. Even with the normal summertime QRN
(static), had very respectable reception. This sign off format is still
one of my favorites.

6024.95 presumed Red Patria Nueva with actual audio, which is a rare
event for me; normally only an open carrier can be heard here;
0232-0239 UT with EZL pop songs; poor.

6134.82 R. Santa Cruz went off at 0204* UT on July 12; after playing
their usual "Santa Cruz" song; not as strong as Radio Pio Doce

BRAZIL 11734.96 R. Transmundial. Found the het here again at 1952 UT.
This indeed turned out to be R. Transmundial mixing with 11735 kHz ZBC
Zanzibar. Sounded like two sets of music at tune/in. Canned announcements
at 1958 UT by M in Portuguese. Website announcement with mention of
"Transmundial" and "www", then start of next announcement with mention of
Transmundial, and off at 1959:02 UT. Just about equal with Zanzibar. Don't
ever recall hearing this sign off at this time in the past. Here's a link
to a recording I made at sign off:

(mention of "www" at :15 and "Transmundial" at :21, then R. Transmundial
goes off leaving ZBC in the clear and the bandwidth is increased. (1 July)

FRANCE Projekt SmartCast.
* TDF testet mal wieder verschluesselte DRM-Sendungen inkl. frei
empfangbarem Multimedia-Content, laeuft offenbar immer Vormittags

Also

Empfaengers soll SmartCast empfangen koennen.

73, Remy.

FRANCE I have seen official releases by TDF in their new IRIS
Headquarters (underneath the Romainville TV/FM tower) which state that
after 01 Aug 2016 on 1071 kHz from the Brest (48 16 30 N 04 09 04 W)
site there will be 20 kW DRM broadcasts for French sailors around

I don't know the hours of transmission yet but these broadcasts are
scheduled to last 2 years. All of this is thanks to Mauno and Thierry

I assume that the same East mast will be used as was previously used on to
carry France Inter.

I will soon be moving house (back to my newly renovated one) so I will be
highly involved in that personal diversion over the next 2 weeks. I will
try to keep track of DX things but I hope that you will understand.

FRANCE Reception of Radio France in the east of Paris.

According to a news report from yesterday on Radio France is
testing on DAB+. Its aim is to improve reception in the east of Paris in
the 19th and 20th arrondissement, Bagnolet, Montreuil, Romainville and Les
Lilas. Reception on FM via the transmitter on top of the Eiffel tower is
disturbed by the Les Mercuriales twin towers. France Inter was the first
to react and installed a low power FM station on top of "Les Mercuriales".

The report continues to say that no further frequencies could be
coordinated. So the media council CSA granted a licence to start tests via
DAB+. Interesting to note that Radio France as well as major private
networks reject participation in regular DAB+ transmissions in Paris,
Marseille and Nice. They argue that digital radio can't be financed within
their normal budgets.

In the Alsace province in the east of the country, the Alsacian language
programmes on France Bleu Alsace can't be heard anymore via terrestrial
frequencies after close down of Strasbourg MW transmitter on 1278 kHz.

Der Rundfunk im Widerstand gegen Hitler, Teil 2
"This is London calling!"

Deutschland gut empfangen konnte, ernsthafte politische Gegner.

The attached newspaper clipping reports the whereabouts of the old Berlin-
Britz shortwave transmitter. So the transmitter had already been scrapped,
then the remains been taken away from the scrap yard at Neuruppin and in
arduous work reassembled, at least parts of the final stage.

This was done by a society who in 2009 just barely managed to save the
historical collection of former Werk fuer Fernsehelektronik (WF) from
being thrown away by Samsung when they cleared the building. WF products
included transmitter tubes, also Image Orthicon tubes and complete studio
cameras (for B&W; I understand that attempts to develop also colour
cameras had been given up, found to be too complex and/or not economical)
and so on:

The idea to grab what remained of the old RIAS shortwave transmitter
resulted from the circumstance that mediumwave jamming equipment, used
until 1978 against the RIAS MW outlets, had been made by WF, too. The
shortwave service of RIAS had been launched mostly due to this jamming,
and so they think that the transmitter fits into their collection.

Here is how it looked a bit more than a year after finally failing,
with the console still being powered:

And with the president posing for press photographers, reporting on
the closure of 990 kHz:

While still on air (Deutschlandradio press photo by Bettina Straub):

The antenna, immediately behind the shack that housed this transmitter
as well as an ancient 10 kW FM one and also the first mediumwave gear,
removed already around 1990:

Here one could in 2013 see that the game was over:

And I guess the third from left level meter already had no inscription
anymore at this point because...

I don't know if any parts of this transmitter, such as the front plate
with the chalk inscription, survived.

GERMANY Ismaning, Wiederau, Koenigs Wusterhausen, Zeesen etc.

4 SW TX by US VoA [IBB] Ismaning August 1945 till April 1, 2005

I understand that this equipment has not been used beyond 1992. In fact
the installation of six additional transmitters at the Wertachtal plant in
the late eighties (now PDM ones, not the old plate modulation design until
then installed) was an extension for VOA, meant as direct replacement for

This is perhaps not so widely known because the West German postal office
refused a fixed assignment of these transmitters as "the VOA relay
Wertachtal", unwilling to sacrifice operational flexibility for American
sensitivities. Furthermore this lease arrangement had been terminated
again already in the nineties. The later IBB leases, with which VOA
returned to Wertachtal after an extended break, were a completely new

I understand that the additional Wertachtal transmitters ca. 1987/1988
took over all former Ismaning transmissions with the exception of
3980 kHz, lacking a 75 metres antenna (Wertachtal got one only when
Deutsche Welle left Juelich site).

This 3980 kHz finally went to Biblis, as far as I known in 1992, when the
strict separation of VOA and RFE/RL transmission facilities broke.

The 2005 date (in fact it was 27 March 2005) refers to 1197 kHz. Has the
transmitter afterwards been swiftly scrapped or as usable piece of
equipment been moved to elsewhere?

DRP - Deutsche Reichspost Leipzig Wiederau. French made SFR Paris
(?Thomson-Houston? predecessor) 12 kW TX. KWS, delivered in 1943, in use
til April 12, 1945.

The transmitter has not been put into operation under NS auspices anymore.
That 12 April 1945 date refers to the cessation of NS transmissions on

DP - Deutsche Post [der DDR] in April 1947 til Sept 30, 1990 used for
Sender Leipzig, Radio DDR, and and RBI Radio Berlin International foreign
sce of GDR til Sept 30, 1990.

The old transmitter had in 1972 been replaced by a new Funkwerk Koepenick
one, rated 100 kW. Probably the old rig has afterwards been kept as aux
for some time, but it was gone already by 1989.

The new Wiederau transmitter, just like Nauen and Koenigs Wusterhausen,
transmit Radio Berlin International programming up to 2 Oct 1990, 23:59
CET (I have this from primary sources). Afterwards it had been used by
Deutsche Welle until 1993, also for relays of Deutschlandfunk programming
in Czech and Polish (on 5965 kHz I think, of course on a rhombic actually
designed for long haul transmissions to Asia).

DRP - Deutsche Reichspost Koenigs-Wusterhausen 2 at Zeesen site. domestic
on Sept 1926, KWS from March 1933 til April 1945. and later 5 kilometers
distance away on older DP - Deutsche Post [der DDR] Koenigs-Wusterhausen 1

It was the other way round: Koenigs Wusterhausen was first, starting with
spark gap transmitters in 1915, first music transmissions on longwave in
1920 and the first shortwave broadcasts, on ca. 5770 kHz, in 1926.

Zeesen started with a 30 kW longwave transmitter, later upgraded to 60 kW,
in 1927. Shortwave followed with a 8 kW transmitter in 1929, followed by a
second one with a first curtain antenna in 1932.

Between 1934 and 1938 two large transmission complexes with eight 50 kW
transmitters, numerous curtain antennas etc. have been built. All this
equipment has been dismantled in 1945 and brought into the USSR. Two of
the transmitters went to Sitkunai where they may or may not still rest in
the transmitter hall. No traces of the other transmitters have been
reported so far, but they may well have been used elsewhere in the USSR.

Only Koenigs Wusterhausen facilities were still available, including
shortwave transmitters installed for utility services but also usable for
AM transmissions with 5 kW carrier power. One such transmitter had been
activated in November 1945 on 6070 kHz and after a few weeks retuned to
6115 kHz, a frequency that remained in use at Koenigs Wusterhausen
throughout the years until the very end in 1993. A second transmitter
followed in early 1950 on 7150 kHz.

As next step the postal office wanted to revive the Zeesen site, but at
this point it had already been required by MfS for a spy numbers facility.
Thus the postal office had to use Nauen instead, which otherwise would
have remained a mere utility site.

Koenigs Wusterhausen for its part got in 1961/1962 six Sneg transmitters,
run in fixed 100 kW pairs, and in 1969 another 100 kW transmitter of a
more recent Soviet design that already offered automated features. The
whole stuff was not very flexible, especially lacking comprehensive
antenna switching; any transmitter could only use a limited choice of

It all ended the same way than at Wiederau. Just a few weeks before I
still sat outside the compound and found as only local signal 6115 kHz,
with the typical East German modulation Deutsche Welle wished to not get.
But simply removing the W754+V754 processing was not as feasible as they
were thinking at Cologne.

veiled GDR Clandestine transmissions in Greek and Turkish communist party
radio services

Probably also from Wiederau. For Koenigs Wusterhausen the site use is
confirmed by local observations.

I have not been able to find out more about these transmissions so far. It
already starts with the question where this programming has been produced,
at least where the tapes have been played out. Not necessarily at
Nalepastrasse, with Staatliches Komitee fuer Rundfunk apparently having
been completely bypassed.

approx. summer 1995, when Bundespost Elmshorn ceased DWL Deutsche Welle
6140 kHz daytime service.

Wasn't this 6140 kHz transmission from Elmshorn USB or special in some
other way?

Either way Deutsche Welle not gave up the frequency at this point but
continued to use it from transmitter KWZ 1 at Nauen, interrupted for two
hours at noon when RNW in English had been transmit on either 41 or 31
metres towards the UK instead. From 2000, when the old KWZ 1 transmitter
had finally been shut down (but later replaced by the ex- Juelich one
still in use now), they even leased a Juelich transmitter again for their
beloved 6140 if I recall correctly.

RUSSIA Russia to deploy two powerful radar systems in the Baltic and
Black Seas.

Russian Interfax news agency reported that Russia may attempt to
compensate for the increase in NATO's military activity by placing two new
radar stations in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea, which would be able to
control the 200-mile coastal zone.

"It is expected that modified Podsolnuh (Sunflower) over-the-horizon radar
units will start combat duty in the Baltic Sea in 2017," Interfax's source
said, adding that similar radar could be deployed in the Crimea in 2017.
"It can see any warship that sails through the Bosporus Strait."

The Podsolnuh radar system passed the Russian government tests in 2006.
There are three stations currently on duty: one in the Sea of Okhotsk,
another in the Sea of Japan and the third in the Caspian Sea.

Podsolnuh allows its operators to automatically and simultaneously detect,
track and classify potential threats beyond the radio horizon. It can find
up to 300 offshore objects and 100 air objects, determine their
coordinates and transfer them to targeting complexes and systems of armed
naval vessels and air defense systems. In June, Podsolnuh's developer,
RTI, told Interfax that the company plans to supply the Ministry of
Defense of the Russian Federation with several more radars in the future.

"In 2017, the Russian Defense Ministry plans to purchase several stations
for the Navy that will be deployed in the Arctic, as well as at the
southern and western borders of Russia," said the Director General of RTI,
Sergey Boev.

In March, Podsolnuh guided warships of the Caspian fleet equipped with the
Caliber-NK missile complex during naval military exercises.

Clan rivalries.
The TFG [Transitional Federal Govrnment] has had an uneasy relationship
with the Somali media, especially the radio
stations and websites operating from Mogadishu, since it was set up in
Kenya in 2004. At the root of the tension is
what the TFG sees as clan bias and, lately, an overzealous reporting of
insecurity and armed attacks against the TFG
and the Ethiopian troops that support it.

The TFG has on numerous occasions been accused of intimidating journalists
working for radio stations in Mogadishu and elsewhere. Radio Warsan, an
independent commercial station in the town of Baidoa (Baydhabo), the
former seat of the TFG, has been closed by the TFG on three occasions
since last September. Source: BBC_Monitoring research 15 Jan 2007.

Somalia: Somali government shuts down three Radio stations
<> Aweys Osman Yusuf.

Mogadishu 06, June 2007 (Sh.M.Network) The Somali government has issued a
decree to close down three main FM stations in the capital. The decree
orders Shabelle Media Network, Horn Afrik and IQK (The holy Quran Media)
to shut down. Reasons were not given for the closure.

These three radios have been ordered to shut down twice in the past as the
Somali government accused them of exaggerating the government and
Ethiopian military operations in Mogadishu, the Somali capital. Horn Afrik
and IQK went off air soon after they received the decree.

Shabelle Media Network is still on air as the decree has not yet been
brought to it. The decree was, however, read in Horn Afrik station before
the closure. We will keep you updated as the news develops. Somali Radio
Warsan in Baidoa was closed two days ago after the government
administration in the farming town issued the decree to shut the FM down.

SWITZERLAND MW-Sender Monte Ceneri Cima / Schweiz.

April 1933 in

<> (in SatelliFax via Klaus Koehler-D A-DX ng July 19)

On Monday the demolition of the 558 kHz Cima di Dentro transmitter
will start. The 220 metres main mast is supposed to be destroyed on
July 18.

Frequency lists showed 558 kHz always as "Monte Ceneri", but this is
another site 6 km away that replaced the old one from 1931 in 1979.
The Monte Ceneri tower is not affected by the clearing of the new
site. It's a situation identical to Sottens where the 1931 vintage
tower has been preserved but the new one, built at some distance from
the old one only in 1989, been detonated in 2014 (the TV report
includes footage of this).

Some photos:

The SRG/RSI TV report includes a close-up that makes it clear that the
original ABB tube transmitter remained in use here til the end, too.
So no solid-state mediumwave transmitters have been installed in
Switzerland anymore.

What SRG/RSI does not bother to mention (if I did not overlook it) is
that 558 kHz had been reactivated in April 2011 for Voice of Russia,
when they were in Moscow not foreseeing yet that soon afterwards the
money for their legacy AM radio services would be cut, making it
inavoidable to abandon 558 kHz again at yearend 2012.

Thus it was in fact Voice of Russia who kissed professional mediumwave
broadcasting in Switzerland good-bye. And with their use of 693 kHz
they reserved the right to do the same at Berlin exactly one year

TURKEY Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan evening of July 20 in
Turkey has entered a state of emergency for three months.
In this regard, the work of amateur radio is prohibited.

the link is probably broken,
but on cache this text can be read:

It has been confirmed by Supreme Council of radio and television of Turkey
(RTUK) the news that Mr. Erdogan - the president of Turkey has revoked
3213 national ham radio licenses. The HF radio in Turkey is now silent.
No transmissions are allowed.
(various sources July 20)

comment: conspiracy theories? - The political messages about the state
of emergency and the situation of amateur radio licenses are very
contradictory and without clarity yet.

It is questionable whether all radio licenses will survive the breakdown
of democracy. You have to wait for future developments towards a
presidential democracy and a Sultan domination of Erdogan on the
anniversary of statehood in 2023 year.

Germany is expecting a new influx of refugees from Turkey following
President Erdogan's authoritarian crackdown. The sackings and persecution
practically mean a destruction of their living condition. Even
conservative politicians have suggested politically persecuted Turks
should be offered asylum.

Radio and TV station follows the blocking of about 20 online news portals
in recent days. Among the banned daily websites and news portals are
Rotahaber, Gazeteport, Karsi daily, ABC daily and Medyascope. (wb.)

Some reports are now coming in that this is a false report, so take it
with a grain of salt. But keep in mind:

1. The Turkish government just voted to give even more powers to an
already-autocratic leader, suspending 'human rights'.

2. Reports that the information is false is coming from a Turkish
government regulatory agency which has NOT been purged (ergo - Loyal to

3. Written by pro-Erdogan Turkish citizen. "Coup failed, democracy wins!"
Then he follows up by saying don't believe the lies. Huh????

It seems to me that it would be more correct to say,
'Constitution and rule of law failed, Erdogan wins!'
Ham radio shouldn't be about politics, but sometimes politics comes to ham
radio. - taken from

Withdrawal of Radio and TV licences in Turkey.

After the failure of the military coup in Turkey the Turkish Radio and TV
Supreme Council RTUeK (Radyo ve Televizyon Uest Kurulu) withdrew licences
of 24 Radio and TV stations.

The following radio stations lost their licences:
Kanal Tuerk Radyo,
Burc FM,
Samanyolu Haber Radyosu,
Radio Mehtap,
Berfin FM,
Radyo Haber Ego,
Duenya Radyo,
Radyo Kure,
Ezra Radyo,
Samanyolu Haber Radyosu and
Radyo Samanyolu Haber Anadolu,
also Can Erzincan TV (no other names of TV stations were mentioned).

The withdrawal of the radio/TV licences was justified with their links to
Mr. Guelen's movement which is accused to stay behind the coup attempt and
is described to be a "terrorist organization". {source:}

USA 11580 UT Wed July 19 at 0152 UT, surprised to hear WRMI repeating
last weekend's PCJ Radio International special from the Radio Nederland
archives, familiar segment with Eddy Startz concluding interview by Tom

shortwave, song he composed; then about a Happy Station song on a 7-inch
record, composed by listener Mary O'Higgins in Ireland, and sung by Tom

11580 QSL - WRMI Okeechobee Florida verified my reception of Radio
Ukraine International with "WRMI Okeechobee Facility Manager Terry Elders
giving a shortwave receiver to a new listener in the countryside near
Jeremie, Haiti" card in 629 days from an illegible verie signer (First
name could be Juan). My records indicate that it was Radio Ukraine
International's broadcast but the card did not indicate. In the past WRMI
was very good about including this information.

USA [to UGANDA target] 15240, on Sat July 2 at 1650 UT, WWRB is out of
whack, African(?) music modulation cutting off and on twice per second.
Still at 1658 UT, and same malady continues during formal opening of Radio
Munansi, with anthem, and choral themesong. So the preceding music hour is
obviously coming over the same feed. Isn't anyone paying attention? Mick
Delmage, Alberta said some good African music went haywire at 1610-1620+
UT. My recheck at 1727 UT finds it now OK, the speaker in Luganda(?) with
looong pauses so I first thought it was dead air.

It remains doubtful that this broadcast is reaching Uganda. Ivo Ivanov
thinks the azimuth is 45 degrees which is aiming at Paris, yet I could not
get a readable signal via nearby UTwente, while Uganda is really 70
degrees from WWRB. Try again Sunday.

USA [AUSTRALIA non] Unique Radio will be on WINB.

Unique Radio via web and also WINB 9265 kHz, Thursday from August 4th

Hi Glenn [Hauser], Just letting you know the latest from Unique Radio.
Still off air on 3210 kHz whilst we wait for approval from ACMA to
transmit from a new site in Gunnedah NSW.

We have however gained approval for 1647 kHz from Tamworth New South Wales
with a maximum of 400 watts vertically. An antenna has been ordered from
the United States and we're still deliberating on the transmitter, at this

We are still streaming programming however via

Additionally we will be commencing a new program from WINB Red Lion
Pennsylvania USA on Thursdays (From August 4th 2016) at 11 pm (Eastern)
(0300-0400 UT [Fridays, then]) called Unique radio with shortwave chit
chat, mailbag segment and requests. Our main music focus will be oldies
and listener interaction.

We are asking any interested listeners to send us an email telling us how
they got into shortwave radio, anything worth noting on their location,
equipment and any songs they might like to hear and reception reports to
<manager -at->

The show will be hosted by Aussie Tim each Thursday night on 9265 kHz over
WINB, the USA's first commercial shortwave broadcaster.

If you could pass this on, Glenn, that would be appreciated greatly and
any news about world of radio would also be greatly welcomed.

VANUATU 7259.962, on July 7 at 1138 UT, JBA carrier, presumed R. Vanuatu
on precise off-frequency, still transmitting altho allegedly ceasing

getting a double het around 7260 kHz with BFO, so what else? Maybe
Mongolia. It's still almost two hours before Urumqi sunset at 1354 UT.

The Sunspots are back.

Arnie Coro CO2KK - reports on his Radio Habana Cuba "DXers Unlimited"
programme last night (Radio Habana Cuba, 6000 kHz at 0332-0343 UTC
on 13 July) that the Sunspots are back!

"Yes, after twelve days without a single sunspot in sight, the Sun has
revived and the all important daily solar flux figure is barely touching
the 100 units mark. This upsurge in solar activity will surely be felt
from now on ... something already appreciated by the daily ionograms that
show a much higher daytime maximum usable frequency curve.

During the local evening hours we may even pick up some 20 meters band DX
for the first time this summer."

[...] "So expect better HF propagation conditions especially during local
night time hours, and be aware of possible geomagnetic disturbances that
may slightly spoil the somewhat better propagation conditions.. "

Full script of last night's DXers Unlimited programme is at:

Thanks to Andrew Tett for suggesting this article from QST magazine in
2002 which may help in "Understanding Solar Indices":

and includes this on Solar Flux:

"....[Solar Flux] gives a very good indication of conditions for long-
distance communication.

The figure for the solar flux can vary from as low as 50 or so to as high
as 300. Low values indicate that the maximum useable frequency will be low
and overall conditions will not be very good, particularly on the higher
HF bands.

Conversely, high values generally indicate there is sufficient ionization
to support long-distance communication at higher-than-normal frequencies.
However, remember that it takes a few days of high values for conditions
to improve.

Typically values in excess of 200 will be measured during the peak of a
sunspot cycle with high values of up to 300 being experienced for shorter
