9854.95, on August 2 at 0129 UT, Radio Tirana is S5 with humroar and
interval signal quite loud but extremely distorted. Sign-on does not start
until 0131 UT, and now the modulation is much lower, useless vs self-
interference.

9855-, Aug 3 at 0055 UT, surprised to find R. Tirana on air half an hour
early, with IS vs humroar attaining only S3; still so at 0110, and
apparently stays on, but by 0129 UT check all I hear is roar, no IS, nor
0130 UT English modulation. 0141 UT still like that but it's weakening to
S2, below the noise level.

ALBANIA If you check the registrations below (taken from the latest B-16
list) you will notice that the BBC have registered their relay station at
Nakhon Sawan (Thailand) also on 7465 kHz at 0000-0100 UT.

I think it would be inadvisible for ALR to try to use this frequency at
the same time. I suggest that frequency 7475 kHz be utilised for BOTH
transmissions to North America. This would mean that the engineer would
not need to change frequency twice (at 0000 and 0230 UT). There are no
adjacent transmissions that would cause harmful interference to 7475 kHz
currently registered. Maybe Glenn and Wolfy will give their thoughts, and
then the suggested frequency can be registered.
(Noel R. Green-UK, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 5)

Re: 7475 kHz. ALR RT Shijak to NoAmerica in B-16 season.

7475 kHz looks good on 'paper'. I will be monitoring whether there is
anything in the way or adjacent during the current times, such as
utilities, spurs, jammers.

Of course, all this planning will be pointless unless the Shijak
transmitter / feeder is fixed! Or outsourced. Now into third month of
hum-roar.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 6)

Hi Glenn and Wolfy,
Yes, you are quite correct concerning the Shijak transmitter - or whatever
is causing the noise. Maybe they just don't want to ask the people
at Cerrik for assistance, but that seems to be the obvious thing to do
if the Albanian staff can't fix it.

Frequency 7475 kHz was not registered by any other broadcaster during the
times {B-15 March 2016}. Radio Tirana Shijak would use it to NoAM on B-16
winter season, nor were there any sideband problems. I'll be interested to
hear what you find over there.
(Noel R. Green-UK, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 7)

ALGERIA 198 In a roundabout way I have investigated if 198 kHz is
active or not. According to recent observations for which I wish to thank
Mauno, the RTA station at Ouargla is operating at reduced power.
Transmitter-list (who reported it since Droitwich was under maintenance)
and mwlist both believed the station to be silent. I am not sure what
power is being used - it will be well below the registered 2000 kW.

AUSTRALIA   ???  !!!   1000, 1100, 1230... UTC.
Unable to hear Radio Australia on 12085 12065, or 9580 kHz this morning
(Aug 9). 17840 at 0400 UTC on Aug 10 also blank.
(Rick Barton-AZ-USA, dxld Aug 9)

17840 kHz, Aug 9 at 0205 UT, no signal from RA nor on 15240 kHz, but NZL
15720 kHz is OK ending BBC news by Neal/Neil? at 0206 UT.

Stephen Wood in Massachusetts was not hearing 17840 kHz either at 0140 UT.
RA has been off a lot lately. And since forced downsizing to a three-
transmitter schedule, they should have a bunch of extra senders at
Shepparton, if anyone cared.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld Aug 9)

17840 kHz R. Australia from Shepparton, - no signal detected here
tonight, 0140 UT on Aug 9, 2016. This frequency normally provides good
reception here almost every night.
(Stephen Wood-MA-USA, Perseus SDR,
25 x 50 variable terminated superloop antenna. dxld Aug 9)

Radio Australia continues to be totally missing [since Aug 9]
 whenever the known frequencies are checked:

Aug 10 at 2140, no 17840 or 15240 while NZ is JBA on 15720.
Aug 11 at 0552, no signals on 17840, 15240.
Aug 11 at 1325, no  signals on 9580, 12085, 12065.

On 11 August 2016 at 01:34, I asked the mostly dormant ARDXC members
discussion list: "Does anyone have any info about what has happened???"

One reply came: "On RA website, ways to listen, twitter feed shows off air
for maintenance 08.15 till 1500 AEST/PNG Time. John Smith Brisbane"

Copied exactly from his screenshot:

#raonair @ radioaustralia #RAOnAir
Reminder: There will be a shortwave outage today between 08.15-15.00
AEST/PNG time due to maintenance #RAOnAir

KennyBee #No2EU Retweeted [same]

"Today" date not shown, but those times 2215-0500 UT, and RA remains
MISSING far beyond those times.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld Aug 11)

AUSTRALIA 9580 Radio Australia shortwave? - they are "investigating
this issue" . Could this mean they want to find out if listeners still
care about shortwave? We should all write to them and ask what happens to
their shortwave transmissions. Especially if one lives in their target
area.
73 Harald

Dear Harald,
Thank you for your email regarding the ABC Radio Australia shortwave
transmission service via Shepparton bcast center site. We are currently
investigating this issue. Can you please let me know where you are
located?

Kind Regards
Robyn

AZERBAIJAN RFE/RL challenges Azerbaijan in court

Today (3 August) sees the opening of an appeal against tax-related claims
that were used by the Azerbaijan government to force the closure of
RFE/RL's Baku bureau in December 2014.

The appeal follows the freeing of RFE/RL journalist Khadija Ismayilova
from prison in Azerbaijan in May this year.

BRAZIL 6000. R Fronteira, Cabedelo. New SW Brazilian to be launched soon.

According to DXer Lenildo Silva, Brazil, there will be another new
Brazilian broadcaster on the SW.

This is Radio Fronteira, in Cabedelo (PB), which began conducting tests
since last Sunday (July 31) on 6000 kHz. The station provides a cell phone
number (TIM telcom operator), for listeners who want to inform how the
signal is coming in their town.
The number is as follows: (83) 9832-53369.

After contacting the station, DXer Lenildo Silva was informed that the
transmissions will be launched when they receive the proper authorization
from Anatel (the nat'l telcom regulation body).

BRAZIL 11815 on August 2 at S2, weak music from presumed R Brasil
Central, but the off-frequency privates circa 11935, 11925 and 11855 kHz

11687 approx. centered, August 3 at 0058 UT, here's the spurblob from
11780 kHz RNA, about 93 kHz below, matching modulation peaks but totally
unreadable, and yes, the twin 93 kHz above is also audible around 11873

Brazilian DXers in the radioescutas yg have finally taken note of my
frequent logs of spurs from 11780 and 6180 kHz, and Rudolf Grimm asserts
that he does not hear any. Up here you can't help but notice them in
routine bandscanning.

GERMANY [former SAAR 17 Dec 1947 til 31 Dec 1956]
Felsberg building sold; Sud Radio [Andorra] 900 kW; RMC Monaco

Most of the Felsberg transmitter site has been sold to the local
municipality for 120,000 Euro, effective yesterday. They say that they
want to keep it as it is. However, what can be seen in a TV report
looks as if the transmitters have been badly stripped before the hand-
over.

<http://sr-mediathek.sr-online.de/index.php?seite=7&id=42709>

Lagardere wanted to get rid of this remote, pompous transmission
palace, as the Spiegel magazine once called it, already for some
years. After 2013 a closure of 183 kHz was already in the talks,
but then BCE offered a solution which Lagardere accepted.

<http://bce.lu/BCE-PR-14052014.htm>

This solution uses the former aux antenna 1.5 km away, built in
1975/1976 in really the last corner of Germany, one of the guy anchors
is less than ten metres away from French soil. Here BCE set up a new,
light-weight equipment building with transformers for a 20 kV power
supply and transmitters (details have not been released so far, at
least neither BCE shows Felsberg in their website nor have Transradio
or Thomson Broadcast issued news releases of such an equipment
delivery).

<http://radioforum.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?8773,1135773,1297302#msg-1297302>

This new set-up definitely took over the 183 kHz operations earlier
this year or already in last year, making all the other stuff
redundant.

The contribution from Kai re Europe 1 and Sud Radio is
perfect for this Group and I have greatly enjoyed and benefited from
the Youtube finds. Thank you warmly Kai (Dan Goldfarb, ibid.)

Then some still photos of the Pic Blanc transmitter maybe of interest
as well, taken in last year (the facility seems to be kind of a
tourist attraction now):

<http://www.schoop.fr/photos/31_sudradio.php>

Details of the antenna and its behaviour would be of interest. How
effective was it in regard to producing a groundwave? Or was it not at
all and all propagation was direct radiation and skywave?

Transmitter details would be another question. There appears to be an
assortment in the transmitter room, so probably the listed 900 kW were
indeed the rated power of the equipment, as it was the case with e.g.
Cluj [ROMANIA] 1152 kHz which was a combination of a 750 and a 200 kW
transmitter, thus indeed a 950 kW. The same way Felsberg 1400 kW
between late-sixties and mid-seventies was a 400 + 400 + 600 kW

Re: LW 183 kHz - Felsberg

For the chronicle: The old Felsberg transmitters had been turned off for
good on 19 Oct 2015 at 08:21 (local time), as quoted from the station log
in

<http://www.saarbruecker-zeitung.de/saarland/saarlouis/ueberherrn/berus/Berus-Architektur-Baukunst-Gebaeude-Juwelen;art446680,6213342>

The imagery that appears at present at

<https://goo.gl/maps/nSNVvXsyHLo>

is from 30 Sep 2015 and shows them ("them" means, at least partly, the
Junglinster maintenance crew) still working on the feed lines at the new
transmitter building which looks like a dwarf, compared to
the 86 x 46 x 16 metres monster where palm trees had been grown.

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-1.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

Transformer cells include special 20 kV / 210 V transformers for two
transmitters. This points at Transradio, unless it happens that other
manufacturers use the very same special current as well. My guess are
2 x 750 kW as installed at Beidweiler, too, unless some wild speculation
is true and these are the former Donebach and Aholming rigs.

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-2.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

Back side with feed outputs to the former aux antenna to the left and the
former main antenna to the right:

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-3.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

From a distance:

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-8.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

On the other side the old transmitter hall had a direct output, out of the
glass wall, to the former aux antenna. Now only the carriers of this feed
line remain.

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-4.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

This feed line is now used to connect the new transmitter to one of the
old masts. It seems that all power distribution / phasing gear for the
directional main antenna was in the attachment at the northern side of the
hall, seen in the background here, so the only kind of aux arrangement
that is still possible is a use of one of the remaining main masts as
simple ND radiator.

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-5.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

The most southwestern mast of the former main antenna, no longer connected
to the outside world and presumably detuned/grounded now:

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-6.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

Former main entrance of the old Felsberg station and remains of the mast
they had removed in 2013:

<http://www.radioeins.de/content/dam/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/Felsberg-7.jpg.jpg/img.jpg>

Btw, the SR TV report is no longer available, it has been deleted after
seven days in accordance with the German Rundfunkstaatsvertrag nonsense.

In  <mwmasts -at- yahoogroups.com>  - <KaiLudwig-D> wrote :

Lagardere wanted to get rid of this remote, pompous transmission palace,
as the Spiegel magazine once called it, already for some years.
After 2013 a closure of 183 kHz was already in the talks, but then BCE
offered a solution which Lagardere accepted.

<http://bce.lu/BCE-PR-14052014.htm>

This solution uses the former aux antenna 1.5 km away, built in 1975/1976
in really the last corner of Germany, one of the guy anchors is less than
ten metres away from French soil. Here BCE set up a new, light-weight
equipment building with transformers for a 20 kV power supply and
transmitters (details have not been released so far, at least neither BCE
shows Felsberg in their website nor have Transradio or Thomson Broadcast
issued news releases of such an equipment delivery).

<http://radioforum.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?8773,1135773,1297302#msg-1297302>

This new set-up definitely took over the 183 kHz operations earlier this
year or already in last year, making all the other stuff redundant.

GERMANY [non shortwave?] DW grows global audience

Deutsche Welle (DW) has recorded a marked increase in its audience reach
over the last year. 135 million people watch, listen to or use DW
programmes and services at least once a week, compared to 118 million in
2015. The English-language TV programme and digital offerings across
languages, especially in social media, are particularly successful.

Commenting on the latest audience figures DW Director General, Peter
Limbourg (pictured), said: "The positive development in the number of
users of our media strengthens our conviction to focus on digital media
and extensive news programming in English. The popularity of our formats,
especially in the Middle East and Africa, is proof of DW's positive image.
Thanks to our multi-language editorial teams, DW is a recognised and
valued source of independent, reliable journalism."

9650, my next check is Aug 6 at 1351 UT, when there is a JBA carrier, but
that could easily be R. Sonder Grense, South Africa, longpath at 07-17.

Per Aoki, only other 9650 kHz stations are: 1530-1630 UT Living Water

Re: Radio Guinee Conakry was back again on shortwave 9650 kHz, Aug 5.

Thanks, Ivo, for the heads-up! I was wondering whether their return a few
months back was only a one-off. Signal is present in Victoria, but too
weak to decipher.

Plus, Voice of Korea is listed co-channel. I reviewed 10 or 15 remote
Perseus receivers.

Widely heard with best signal from a southern Italian receiver. Very good
reception. Otherwise widely heard across Europe and the middle East.
A Brisbane SDR has only Korea. Northern India has both stations heard.
All this around 22:00 UT.

Lots of local programming, news, mentions of Conakry and Radio Guinee.
Mostly in French. Many years ago they used to have a short English
segment. Wonder whether there's anything like that still?

dawned on me as to a possible pattern here. Aug 1 and July 25, both

Monday?

Heard this Monday Aug 8, 0949-1000* UT; in Chinese; was expecting them to

VATICAN STATE "I received a reception report from a listener of DigiDX
in Italy for this morning's 0530 UT repeat of DigiDX on 6070 kHz which
says the Vatican broadcast did come on the air at 0535 UT. He didn't state
the language or the length of the broadcast however."

If it was indeed for yesterday morning's broadcast, might have been a

Re: Vatican Radio - latin mass and rosary no longer on SW on weekdays.

Kai Ludwig wrote: Vatican Radio welcomes comments about the decision to
this:

Which decision? The apparent one to close and dismantle the Santa Maria di
Galeria facility, as just mentioned in own Radio Vatican communication (of
which, as reported, the German version was incorrectly worded as if the
facility is already closed)?

Or the very general one to let Radio Vatican as a media brand on its own
disappear, probably still in 2016, as it could be gathered from the
farewell interview of Federico Lombardi as head of Radio Vatican in
February?

An interview in which he gave little details about the implementation of
the Patten commission suggestions but full details about his personal
feelings, as if they were of much greater importance.

Concerning the detail originally discussed here: I don't think that I will
send my honest opinion to Radio Vatican shortwave operations. It may
suffice to quote a response I got on sending around the clip of rosary on
7250 kHz without explanations:
"Who in the world is still putting *this* on an AM transmitter???"

"Vatican back on 6070 kHz again this evening."

I was just listening to Radio Klein Paris International on 6070 kHz from

flattened the signal again until 2100 UT. I'm not sure if today is

VIETNAM   [and non; AUT/UAE/U.K./USA]

The editor of weekly el.bulletin RUS DX, Moscow, Russia, Mr. Anatoly
Klepov, writes in Forum DENEB, Russia for some changes in the schedule of
Voice of Vietnam in English:

0000-0027 & 0100-0127 UT on 6175 kHz WHRI Cypress Creek
(ex 0100-0127 & 0230-0257 on 12005 Woofferton);
new 1100-1127 & 1500-1527 on 7285 Vietnam;
new 2130-2157 on 7280 & 9730 Vietnam.
The other broadcasts are unchanged
(Translated by Rumen Pankov-BUL, dxld Aug 10)

How early the frequency in the 49 m is starting. Usually this has been
down in early November after daylight saving time and more evening of
darkness can help the 49 m band.
(Richard Lemke-Alb-CAN, dxld Aug 10)

Relay sites not specified below, but 6175 kHz in B-seasons has been
Woofferton-UK at 0100 & 0230 UT; WHRI US still at 0330 UT.

Current WHR schedule shows Angel 2 at 0330 UT on 6175 kHz with VOVTN,
but still with other services before 0300 UT on 9605, 7315 kHz.

Africa to the Northern Hemisphere might favour the propagation path to
eastern North America rather than Europe. I replied that I would give it a
try using my own receiver/recorder, here in New Brunswick, leaving it
running overnight on 9680 kHz.

Well, I finally got around to doing just that this past Monday, 1 Aug
(UTC), a holiday here. With the Tecsun PL-880 and 7-metre longwire at the
far end of the backyard, bingo! A pretty weak signal at 05:00 UT sign-on
but it faded up quickly to a barely listenable level with music and chat
for the better part of 20 minutes or so before starting to fade out.
Occasionally marred by brief utility QRM (sounds like digital noise bursts
or radar).

Completely faded out by about 06:30 UT. Attached is a brief clip of the
station ID around 05:15 UT, which seems like it might have been live as
there was a time check for 7:15 Central African Time.
