AUSTRALIA ABC axes Northern Territory HF Service - Alice Springs,
Tennant Creek, and Katherine installations.

Due to budget cuts, the Transmission Provider, Broadcast Australia, has
closed down all of these services.
(Bob Padula, Melbourne, Australia, to wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Sept 5)

This is truly a shocking move by the ABC!

A while back in the late 1990s I drove through the Northern Territory and
from the Queensland border to Tennant Creek there was no radio reception
at all during the daytime with the exception of the domestic shortwave
service. The same was true on the highway from Tennant Creek to Alice
Springs.

Of course there are low powered FM relays in the settlements but distances
between towns in the Territory are vast.

This service was essential for truck drivers, farmers, and the many tiny
Aboriginal settlements that were too small to justify a FM relay.
Shame on you ABC and another sad day for shortwave too!!

I contacted ABC about the shutdown of the shortwave service on 4835 kHz.
This is their reply. It looks like a technical problem they are working
on:

From: Reception Advice
<Advice.Reception -at- abc.net.au>

Date: 2016-09-05
"Thank you for your enquiry regarding the ABC Northern Territory Outback
Radio service. We are currently working with our transmission provider on
a number of shut downs over the coming weeks to investigate a range of
technical issues for the service. Please try MW and FM frequencies."
(Giovanni Carboni, S. Antioco isl, Sardinia, Italy, dswci DXW Sept 7)

ABC axes Northern Territory HF Service - Alice Springs,
Tennant Creek, and Katherine. Due to budget cuts, the Transmission
Provider, Broadcast Australia, has closed down all of these services.
(Bob Padula-Vic-AUS, via Bueschel Sept 05 and Erik Koie-DEN,
Anker Petersen-DEN, dswci DXW via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Sept 7)

Perhaps we should cut Bob Padula a bit of slack.
He subsequently posted on the WRTH Facebook page:

"The info I posted is certainly not 'false'! The three txers have been off
the air for some days - a professional contact in Broadcast Australia, who
has asked to be anonymous, advised me that the service had been closed due
to funding cutbacks in Broadcast Australia."
(Richard Langley-NB-CAN, dxld Sept 10)

AUSTRALIA THE BRANDON Antennas.

During July and August, Jan and I went on a road trip through NSW and QLD.
We travelled just under 10,000km - and had a wonderful time. We also
travelled through the little township of Brandon, QLD. I checked out the
former RA site while we were there.

Both SW antennas are still up in the air and appear to be maintained, even
though they are no longer in use. I suppose it's in Broadcast Australia's
best interests to have them at the ready! Anyway, I took a bunch of photos
and have a little post now up on the Mount Evelyn DX Report. My thanks to
Craig Seager for his additional help with background information.

Perhaps this article may be of interest to some in this Yahoo group.

EGYPT While looking for images to accompany a Radio Cairo SW recording,
I came across the other Radio Cairo, the local European service of the
ERTU, the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, which broadcasts on 95.4
MHz in Cairo. It identifies itself, in English, as Radio Cairo the Voice
of Egypt, but also Cairo Radio. Claims to be the #1 station in Cairo.

The station audio is streamed on the Web from an ERTU website:
<http://www.egradio.eg/>
("The Gateway of the Egyptian Radio") and specifically, from this URL:

<http://www.egradio.eg/radio.php?PubPnt=ElBernamegElOrobi&ChnName=6>

Use the Google translation facility to read the Web pages. While I was
listening on 25 August, I noted they carried the BBC News and Newshour
starting around 1300 UT. They carry pop music programs and documentaries
as well. There was an interesting interview / documentary on the Indian
struggle for independence and Indians in Egypt.

This is a multilingual station. At about 1700 UT they switched to French,
calling themselves Radio Le Caire. Audio is way better than that currently
being encountered from Radio Cairo SW although, at times, it is a bit
overmodulated or unevenly modulated.

GERMANY Deutsche Wetterdienst moves to 6180 kHz.

Jan Balzer reports on A-DX list, that DWD has changed frequency yesterday:
6180 kHz instead of former 5905: 0600-0630, 1200-1230, and 2000-2030 UT.
(Mauno Ritola-FIN, WRTH F_B group, 10 Aug)

Alan Pennington writes:
I checked DWD's new 6180 kHz (AM+USB) on 23, 24 and 25 August at 0600v-
0630v UT, and it suffers interference here from Radio Nacional da Amazonia
/ Radio Nacional de Brasilia on the same frequency.

The degree of interference varies day to day with conditions, but is
always present (DWD's target zone is the North and Baltic Seas). I emailed
Wilfried Behnecke at DWD and he said German listeners had also reported
this problem.

He suggested they could switch back to 5905 kHz for their 0600 broadcast.

But he adds they are using a very old transmitter that cannot be handled
automatically. However they "hope that we will get more flexible with
delivery of our new shortwave transmitter with a special AM-Module at the
end of this year."

He emailed 25 August to say "from today we are broadcasting our first big
weather report via 6180 kHz. This big report is converted to speech
automatically."
This ran from their 1200 UTC half hour broadcast on 25th.

HUNGARY 540 Nautel to update Antenna Hungaria MW station.

40 Jahre alter MW Sender Solt Ungarn 540 kHz
wird durch kanadischen NAUTEL Sender erneuert.

Nautel to update Antenna Hungaria MW station.

Nautel Selected for Update of Europe's Most Powerful MW Station
Two Megawatt Radio site in Hungary will be upgraded over the next year
with a Nautel NX2000 MW system.

30 August 2016, Hackett's Cove, Nova Scotia - Nautel Limited today
announced receipt of an order that will place Nautel's largest
transmitter, the 2 Megawatt NX2000 Medium Wave system, into operation at
Antenna Hungaria's transmission facility near Solt, Hungary. Porion
Digital KFT will manage commissioning of the system, which will involve
large infrastructure changes at the site as well as the new transmitter.

Antenna Hungaria is wholly owned by the government of Hungary and provides
broadcast, telecommunication and multimedia services throughout the
country. Their Solt operation is the most powerful medium wave radio
transmitter in Europe and one of the most powerful transmitters in the
world. Its signal on 540 kHz can be heard all over Europe as well as in
parts of Africa, Russia and Asia. The solid state Nautel system will
replace an aging custom-built tube transmitter that has been in operation
since 1977. The system will incorporate five Nautel NX400 transmitters
with a combiner. Nautel will work closely with Porion throughout the
commissioning phase of the project, including interfacing with the
existing medium voltage supply, coordination of building modifications to
accommodate the new transmitter, and required air handling equipment.

"We are proud and excited to be part of this project," said Balazs Kovacs
of Porion Digital KFT. "A great deal of research went into Antenna
Hungaria's decision to purchase the Nautel system. With a facility this
large, power savings are always an important consideration as well as the
reliability of the system and the vendor's reputation for customer
support. Nautel was able to meet all of these criteria."

"Replacing our 40 year old transmitter was a huge decision, and was not
undertaken lightly," said Attila Nagy, Adviser to the CEO of Antenna
Hungaria. "We felt that the Nautel system was our best choice for overall
reliability and cost of operation. We look forward to working with Nautel
and Porion to bring the latest technologies to this important transmission
facility."

"We are honored to have been chosen for a project of this significance,"
said Wendell Lonergan, Head of Broadcast Sales at Nautel. "This
transmitter site covers a large part of the world and reaches millions of
people. Although we have participated in high-power installations all over
the world, projects encompassing this power level are extremely rare. We
thank Antenna Hungaria and Porion Digital KFT for this opportunity."

Nautel's high-power NX Medium Wave transmitters provide unmatched
reliability with the industry's top efficiency (90%) and surprisingly
compact cabinets.

Individual transmitters are available in 100, 200, 300 or 400 kW designs;
these discrete transmitters can be combined to achieve any desired power
output up to 2 MW. (Lower power units are also available in the NX Series,
ranging down to 3 kW.) In addition to their high efficiency, NX Series
transmitters provide digital pre-correction, RF and audio spectrum
analyzers, 1.8 MHz direct digital modulation and Nautel's award-winning
Advanced User Interface for management and control from almost anywhere.

The transmitter upgrade is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2017.
Nautel Limited will demonstrate transmitter technologies ranging from low
power FM to high power Medium Wave on stand 8.C49 at the upcoming IBC
convention.

About Nautel.
Nautel has emerged as one of the world's largest manufacturers of
broadcast transmitters. With more than 14,000 transmitters deployed in
over 177 countries since 1970 and more than 6,000 deployments of AUI-
enabled transmitters, Nautel continues to lead the way in providing
valuable new solutions for digital broadcasting and other applications.

594 kHz with Akashvani Maitree. Thank you for keeping us informed
about this important development in cross border broadcasting. Could
you please provide additional information on the following topics:

1. It was reported that other AIR external services would be broadcast on
604 kHz in digital DRM. I know that there were test broadcasts in DRM, but
you don't mention it.

2. It was reported that Bangladesh Betar would provide at least on
major news programme. It should be worth while noting, when the
project indeed becomes a joint venture.

3. I read on some Indian news websites that the presence of Chinese
external broadcasting in Bengali was a concern and led to the
considerations for a re-establishment of a major Bengali channel.
I wonder whether this argument was mentioned in more recent reports.
Thank you very much in advance.

Ja, danke, jetzt Sept 2 auf 1053.101 kHz, aber um 21.20 bis 21.28 UT
mehrere Unterbrechungen, manchmal Sender total OFF.

{sic, heard Crete Greece 1512 on Sept 3rd morning, wb.}

So aehnlich ist das mit Tripoli, vor einem Jahr haben sie auf 1053.101 kHz
den ganzen hellen Tag ueber auch gesendet, mit einem Bombensignal
von S=9+20dB mittags auch in Kalabrien anliegend.

NEW ZEALAND What tropical island hosts these masts?

... none at all in fact.

The RNZI transmitter site at Rangitaiki was affected by a very severe snow
dump over the central North Island in early August 2016.

RNZ International's HF transmitter site is located just off Matea Road on
the Rangitaiki Plains, where the bulk of the snow fell and closed the
Napier-Taupo highway. The transmitter building and pole-mounted
transformer are located just to the south of the masts.

The 33 kilovolt feed to the site was essentially destroyed, with most
poles broken at ground level.

During the period without mains power, a diesel generator was used to
power the RNZI shortwave transmitter.

The citizens living in Primorsky Krai are suffering very bad weather.

I have seen footage from Russian TV which refers to 810 kHz in Vladivostok
- Razdolnoye being back on air.

Thank to Kai for advising about the subject on dxld
(maybe 5900 kHz will also return?)

It is impossible to tell at this time, how long the station will be active
for.

This shows that when the will is there and the incentive of natural
disasters needing mass coverage coincides, authorities suddenly realise
the usefulness of high power MW stations and actually turn the
transmitters back on.

5900 kHz *is* on the air, also 7245 -0700 and 9895 0700-1000.

The new season of "Radio Russii" will update the callsign.

Until the fall just a few days, but that's no reason to be sad. At least
in the holding VGTRK. Fall for television and radio workers - a kind of
New Year. Or rather - the new season. To prepare for it seriously, trying
to please its viewers and listeners with new programs and packaging of
channels. Here, for example, we took a chance on the "Radio Russii" - and
updated the long-familiar call signs. Step responsible.

Main theme song "Radio Russia", familiar to the audience, there are more
than five years. During this time, she does not just undergone changes in
the vocal sound and performance, and in the folk style. Abroad for such
records are usually invited symphony orchestras, in our country - is rare,
often limited to electronic sound. "Radio Russia" decided on a bold move -
a musical theme should now be living, powerful, and at the same time air.

"The time required to produce the re-branding, because the old wallpaper
does not meet today's maintenance and filling. And plus still our goal -
to show that it is the state radio, the radio across the country, is
listening to millions ", - said Head of" Radio Russii "thematic programs,
morning producer project" Radio Russii "Konstantin Korol'kov.

To participate in the project invited the orchestra of "Helikon-Opera".
The theater took place and the record itself. For musicians, this
experience is not new, but still unique. This post requires an entirely
different approach, a different game than on the stage.

"According to the intensity of the sound on the mic to work gently, if you
can turn around in the hall, and the hall asks these accents, here you
need to no toxins did not go into the microphone", - he explained the
concertmaster of the orchestra of "Helikon Opera" Elena Zhelezino.

Five great musical sketches and fifteen children. For news, weather
forecast, transmission and cross-program design. They are composed
composer Oleg Trojanowski have long working with the "Radio Russii".

"I've done design before, and there was such a motive - you can sing"
Radio Russii ". And now we are traveling through this motif in different
orchestral styles - somewhere it Bruckner, Stravinsky somewhere ", - he
said.

"Radio Russia" will ring in a new way in the second half of autumn ...

Primorskiy Kray. Vladivostok.

My name is Sergey rv3dsa / 0. Now I live and work in the Far East in
Vladivostok. According to the service associated with broadcasting.

In connection with the last typhoon and the introduction of emergency in
the province at the time, to remove the Russian Emergencies included a
radio transmitter on 810 kHz from 75 kW Now moscha Razdolnoe village.
Plans to increase capacity. In a wired radio news also voiced this
information.

However, the 75 kW Vladivostok heard very bad and not everywhere, though,
and a little distance ~ 30km, and is probably rebuild mogut - transmitter
does not have problems with the disappearance of modulation.

Hi Wolfie,
The first-hand info on the Radio Rossii SW transmissions has appeared in
our open_dx mailing list. I believe you'll get it from Anatoly Klepov-
Moscow-RUS on Sunday in a Google-translated version.

I visited the Roskomnadzor Primorye branch office on Sep 05 and was told
that reactivated R Rossii SW transmissions go on the air from Vladivostok
Razdolnoye. Here is the schedule:

SW schedule of Radio Rossii, Primorye, Vladivostok Razdolnoye
0200-0700 7245 VLD 100 kW 270 deg to FE RUS Russian
0700-1000 9895 VLD 100 kW 270 deg to FE RUS Russian

My comment: indeed, the time slot 1210-1300 UT is used for Radio Rossii
Primorye (confirmed by listening via Australian KiwiSDR yesterday, Sept
06). Quite late for the local programming, as it was 2210-2300 UT in
Vladivostok; that's a bit strange, By the way, most of the air time in
this slot was given to parliamentary candidates who presented their
election platforms. So maybe this is another reason for the temporarily SW
revival, in addition to the Lionrock caused damage? Elections will take
place on Sept 18.

U.K. BBC Radio 5 Live 693 kHz in the South West of England.

Thanks to Simon Hockenhull for this news:

Some major re-engineering work is to be carried out at the Start Point
(South Devon) transmitter serving the South West of England on 693 kHz.

The service will transfer to a temporary mast nearby whilst a new mast is
built and another refurbished, weather permitting, between 5th September
and 18th November 2016.

During this period the service will be transmitting at reduced power, so
if you notice a reduction in signal strength, please try retuning to 909
kHz or listen to BBC Radio 5 Live on DAB, the internet or Freeview.

<http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/news/item118>

[One of the two Start Point masts carrying R5 on 693 khz collapsed on 21
January 2016 and it has been on reduced power from a single mast since
then. See page 18 of February Communication.]

U.K. A tour of BBC Caversham Park before it closes.

Over to You on BBC World Service broadcast a tour of Caversham Park before
it closes - the home of BBC Monitoring - a historical BBC World Service
department, which has been monitoring some of the world's most seismic
events for 75 years.

Caversham Park became the BBC Monitoring Headquarters in 1941 and in light
of recent news that, due to a ?4m funding cut, it'll be closing its doors
for good.

Rajan Datar visits the iconic building.

Coordinating Editor, Chris Greenway gives a tour of the building and a
sense of its history, while Lina Shaikouni gives a taste of what the
service provides today.

The programme was broadcast on 20-21 August and is now available online
at:

U.K. [non] UNID LOCATION 9480 kHz BBC English 0-3 UT still a puzzle.
PROBABLY originate from UAE Al Dhabbaya Babcock site ?

9480.104 { ! } very odd frequency,
BBC English program, 0025 UT Sept 4,
S=9 in Delhi remote SDR.
S=8 in Madrid Spain,

compared to NAK Thailand 9410 kHz at S=9+10dB in Madrid Spain remote unit.

According Tarek Zeidan in Egypt, he heard that 9480 kHz outlet til
0259 UT, so assumed 0000 - 0259 UT scheduled.

U.K.  [non]   9480.09, Sept 2 at 0112 UT, JBA carrier, off-frequency;
nothing listed. Wolfgang Bueschel also heard this at 0100 UT with BBC

Since I found it askew, I'd vote for UAE or South Africa site.

PantronX Titus II DRM receiver.

At the recent HFCC B-16 conference in Miami, George Ross of Trans World
Radio / KTWR Guam revealed some details about this new DRM receiver.

The Pantron Titus II is actually a full SDR solution in a boombox case.
Few details yet, but it is running Android, has a 100 kHz to 2 GHz
receiver on-board and decodes AM, FM, SSB and DRM.

It uses a Quad-Core ARM A53 -at- 1.2 GHz, 1 Gig of RAM and 8 Gig of on-
board Flash. 7" TFT display and supports Android 5, 6 or custom remixes.

It sports some hardware buttons and the back-stand folds under to cover
the TFT display for safety and storage. This unit also facilitates the
Filecasting concept.

It can even be used as a WiFi hotspot, to rebroadcast data it has received
to other local mobile devices.

The price is expected to be below $100

See <http://drmnainfo.blogspot.com> web site where links
to the promotional data on the receiver can be found.
