ALBANIA Radio Tirana foreign service: Web stream taken away.

<http://radioforum.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?8773,1402976>

Summary: The day before yesterday the live stream of Radio Tirana 3, as
they call the foreign service, did not connect. Yesterday its URL had been
taken over by another station which meanwhile embedded this very stream in
its website at

<http://www.rotanastyle.com>

Today this live stream has been removed from the page of Radio Tirana 3
while the two FM programs are still available.

Did they intend to kill the whole foreign service at year end 2016,
refrained from doing so at short notice (it appears to be still transmit,
as far as one can tell from the residual Shijak signal) but had already
terminated the contract for the live stream? Or what's going on here??
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Jan 5)

Hallo Kai {Ludwig},

<http://rtsh.al/radio-tirana-3-live/>

abgeschaltet und seit kurzem ist dort wieder Radio Tirana 3 Programm zu
hoeren. Dies unter der neuen Stream-IP

<http://37.59.32.115:5164>

So werde ich heute auch wieder die deutsche Sendung aufzeichnen und auf
<http://tirana.wwdxc.de>  bereitstellen koennen.

ALBANIA   Radio Tirana via Internet.

2030 UTC: While 7465 kHz provides only a distorted signal,

<http://rtsh.al/radio-tirana-3-live/>

provides a clear audio of the German programme of Radio Tirana.
Producer Astrit Ibro even announces two internet slots for the German
programme (which is news to me):

1800 and 2030 hrs UTC. Unfortunately, he forgets to mention the web
address.

ARMENIA 17695 SM Radio International - Yerevan Gavar site.
Unfortunately, the 1200 UT service to Australia on this frequency was a
poor signal. I also tried via Mark Fahey's remote SDR outside Sydney and
it was about the same signal strength there, too. At this time when the
smoothed sunspot numbers are getting quite low, reception on 17 MHz can be
notoriously unreliable - one day good, next day poor, even on our summer
evenings. I think they may have struck a bad day. 15 MHz MAY have been
slightly better. Or perhaps use a transmitter site in Asia.
Pity it couldn't be heard well because the program sounded quite
entertaining, Dec 25.

BULGARIA Broadcasts to Antarctica (not found on 3 January).

According to posting on "Shortwave Airtime" F_B page yesterday "Spaceline
Ltd and Radio Nova News to start transmission to Antarctica for campaign
for access of information to the Bulgarian Antarctic base. Shortwave is
the only media that can reach directly Antarctica at distance
of 13.000 kms.

Transmissions will start on 1'st of January, 0100-0200 UT daily on
frequency 11600 kHz. For more information visit

<www.spaceline.bg>

I couldn't find any more information at either the spaceline website or
the Radio Nova news website at <https://nova.bg/>
(Alan Roe, Teddington-UK, BrDXC-UK Dec 31)

The information on the F_B page is correct, and Space Line will start the
transmissions of Nova News to Antarctica very soon. It was been planned to
start the project on January the 1'st, but due to some logistic problems
with the base, is posponed for middle or the end of January this year, but
there was a test transmission on January the 1'st 2017 on 11600 kHz. After
the test it appeared that here may be a frequency change from the annouced
one, due to some propagation anomalies.

The retransmission of Radio Nova News on shortwave is a common project
between Nova, Spaceline Ltd. and Bulgarian Antarctic Insitiute, for
reaching the scientists in Bulgarian Antarctic Base on South Shetland
Island with fresh news information feed about the social life in Bulgaria.

Stay tuned to the shortwave.airtime FB page

<https://www.facebook.com/shortwave.airtime>
for more information about the project.

This is Radio Nova News indeed. It's the radio outlet of the one of the
three nationwide tv channels in Bulgaria - Nova TV. Here is a link for the
live stream of the station:

Looking forward to hear them on shortwave here in Sofia.
The signal should be pretty solid.

I just missed the sign-on, but there is a transmission in progress now
(1 Jan 2017 at 0104 UT) on 11600 kHz in a language which may be
Bulgarian - awaiting an ID.

The transmission only lasted a few minutes and then faded out with no
trace even on the Twente WEBSDR - however, I did record what sounds like
a "Nova News" sung jingle. Worth checking again tomorrow at 0100 UT.
(Alan Roe-UK, BrDXC-UK ng Jan 1)

I checked the frequency tonight (3 January at 0120 UT) and did not find
anything.

CUBA   5040  RHC Bauta QSL.

I sent a reception report to Havana for my 5040 kHz log and received an
immediate reply from Arnie Coro indicating my report would be forwarded to
the technical department for a QSL while providing the following
interesting information:

"At present Cuba has three stations operating on the 60 Meters Tropical
Band.

Radio Progreso on 4765 kHz running 50 kW omnidirectional
{I guess via old R Moscow USSR relay site Bejucal?, wb.}.

Radio Rebelde on 5025 kHz with 50 kW 24 hours service to Cuba
as primary target area, and

Radio Habana Cuba on 5040 kHz, {both via Bauta site, wb.]
during part of our local evening hours,
also omnidirectional and running at 100 kW.

In the not too distant future, as solar cycle enters into its deepest null
in activity we may be adding possibly 3350 kHz or near that frequency for
Radio Habana Cuba, running at 25 kW or 50 kW with a simple full wave
dipole antenna.
{probably via Bejucal site too?, wb.}

(Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich, Senior Consultant and Advisor to the
Director General, also Frequency Manager for Cuban shortwave services,
Host of Dxers Unlimited radio hobby program,
via Rich D'Angelo-PA-USA, DXplorer via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 1)

CUBA Due to winter propagation now, noted rather weaker signals from
Cuba these days.

6165 poor S=7 signal RHC La Habana from Bauta bcast center site in
English language at 0434 UT, RHC's weekly mailbag program started, both
female and male px presenter.

6000 distorted audio feed, from Titan bc site at San Felipe Quivican,
250kW unit, S=9+15dB or -60dBm signal in Detroit, // Bauta 6165 kHz. Still
RHC's Mailbag program Sunday edition show, letter from China read. Letter
fom US listener James Bournan(?) in Oklahoma US.

5040 RHC Bauta in Spanish language, S=7 only signal this UTC morning
around 0441 UT on Jan 9.

5025 kHz very weak signal, I can't confirm Radio Rebelde Bauta CUB heard
at 0442 UT.

9790 CRI from Titan bc site at San Felipe Quivican-CUB, Cantonese chinese
service. S=9+10dB or -68dBm at 0445 UT. Surprisingly 4 kHz wide small
audio modulation, could it be a broadcast with reduced main power
consumption ?

9710 Poor signal of RHC Spanish from Bauta site, at low S=4-5 signal
strength, nice Latin American cancionista, til off at 0500 UT.

9535 Not strong RHC Bejucal, S=7-8 in Spanish language, played marcha of
Festival International Caribe, "Esta es RHC"... at 0456 UT.

With the end of Dec 2016 - in B-16 winter season,
TWR Europe terminated airing European languages on MW 1395 kHz.
TRANS WORLD RADIO - Fllake, Albania.

Please find the MW/AM schedules on the succeeding pages.

P.S. In and for other regions, TWR continues to use SW.

FRENCH POLYNESIA Loss of AM radio irks French Polynesia.

French Polynesia's public radio broadcaster says people in remote
locations have complained about the end of transmissions on its AM
frequency.

Radio Polynesie Premiere switched to an all FM service at the beginning of
December, leaving pockets of inhabitants in valleys and on remote atolls
without any local radio service.

The broadcaster added five FM transmitters to its network of 48 to improve
its reach but in an area the size of Europe, the signal fails to reach all
communities.

Concern has been expressed that vital weather warnings are no longer
heard.

The mayor of Makatea in the Tuamotus Julien Mai said there is a risk to
public safety because people have always been advised to have an emergency
kit that includes a radio when severe weather strikes.

Mariners can still receive weather updates via radio.

GREECE Greek radio still recovering from the 2013 lockout:
Mediumwave radio from Megara to operate again

Full article here:

<http://www.thegreekradio.com/node/28583>

Submitted by radiofono.gr on Thu, 05 Jan 2017

The medium wave broadcasting center of the Greek Radio in Pachi Megara is
likely to go live again after three and a half years, since the procedures
for the necessary maintenance and repairs have recently been initiated,
with a high possibility that one of the two transmitters will operate
again soon.

It is worth noting that the broadcasting center, which used to host two
powerful mediumwave transmitters (the ones of multilingual "Filia" and of
EPA Sport) had been subject to looting by burglars, few days after the ERT
closure by the Samaras government, which left the premises unattended.

Since then, it has not operated again.

Repairs and maintenance.

As revealed by official announcements, ERT is launching a tender for the
maintenance of the building and electricity poles with a budget of EUR
18,703, while in December they proceeded with a maintenance of the
broadcast center and a cleaning of the 100 kW mediumwave transmitter. In
November, a dummy load was installed by a team of the ERT subdivision of
structural and electromechanical projects and they checked the generator
Nautel, which ensures the continuation of the broadcast in case of power
outage. They also installed a new grounding network in the main building
of the transmitters.

Alongside, there were other smaller operations required for the safe
operation of the facilities, such as the placement of fire extinguishers
by a private firm, the restoration of the water supply, the maintenance of
fence lighting. In October there was also a visit by a private security
company, in response to a tender, whereas data were collected for the
water insulation and the lighting of the buildings where the transmitters
are placed.

One of the two transmitters in good condition.

Information indicates that the theft of 2013 severely damaged the
transmitter of 981 kHz, which ERA Sport had inherited from ERA4 / YENED,
powered 250 kW, and which intentionally operated at half of its power, to
be able to use the single existing antenna for both broadcast frequencies.
The burglars took away valuable copper from the components of the
transmitter and the cavities of RF duplexers, i.e. the necessary filters
for the coexistence of two transmitters on different frequencies.

However, the same sources say from the thefts of 2013 one quite recently
bought medium wave transmitter was saved. It is a transmitter NAUTEL
NX100, with a power of 100 kW, which relayed Filia at 666 Khz; it is the
same model as the transmitter which relays today the First Program from
Boyati at 729 kHz. This transmitter was of significantly lower consumption
compared to the older machine, and it appears to have attracted the
efforts of the engineers.

Since the transmitters of Megara ceased operations, only one national
program has continued to broadcast in the mediumwave from the Bogiati
facilities, which was guarded by the ERT employees, despite the closure of
the broadcaster.

Also, another powerful mediumwave transmitter, the one of Rhodes, has
switched off due to theft.

The broadcast center of Thessaloniki in Malgara also remains closed, while
few locale mediumewave transmitters continue, such as the ones at
Komotini, Corfu, Volos and Tripoli. Despite the general intention for
savings, the new administration of ERT seems to keep at least part of its
commitment to continue the operation of the structures that existed before
the closure of ERT.

TURKEY Having found the German service on short wave at a time when they
are not supposed to be on short wave (3 Jan at 0045 hrs UT 5960 kHz), I
researched the internet streams of the Voice of Turkey.

The Voice of Turkey has reorganized its stream portals (at least when
compared to my notes of 2014). The home service list

<http://radyo.trt.net.tr/KanalListesi.aspx>

leads you to five national, five regional and three city services, but not
to the international service (as compared to 2014).

<http://www.trtvotworld.com/>

serves as an entrance portal to the various foreign services, where you
can also find the respective audio offers of the editorial staff. In
contrast to 2014, there are no obvious links to the satellite streams.
Luckily, they are still there:
