AUSTRALIA According to Nigel Holmes at RA, the proposed DRM
transmissions from Shepparton have been delayed yet again and may now
possibly take place from July. In the interim, the only DRM from RA
continues from Brandon:

1100-1200 12080 BRN 8 080 DRM
1200-1400 5995 BRN 8 010 DRM
BRN=Brandon, north Queensland
(Craig Seager-NSW-AUS, May 17, ARDXC via dxld)

Hello Glenn, It may be at least a month before I get DRM going out of
Shepparton. I dropped 9890 kHz (with apologies to FEBC) and replaced it
with 5940 kHz to Asia. I can swing it back on 9 or 11 MHz towards the
Pacific as soon as we get clearance for DRM.
(Nigel Holmes, RA, dxld May 16)

Nigel, One question remains as I still see it on all versions of your
schedule, the 100 degree azimuth for 11945 kHz at 0600-1000 UT. That seems
odd to me as you are not using it for any other transmission, and it
crosses nothing much English-speaking (beyond NI NZ), just French
Polynesia. Or are you aiming for Pitcairn, which is 108 degrees from SHP?
Or is it a typo?
(Glenn to Nigel, via dxld May 23)

Shepparton aerial slews 30 deg not 20 deg as designed, Haha, not a typo.
When new aerials were planned mid-90's the slewable arrays were meant to
be 50 & 70 deg natural bearing with +/- 20 deg. slews (30 deg Solomons &
sw Pac, 50 deg Fiji, 70 deg. Cooks & Samoa & 90 deg French Poly), but TCI
stuffed the order & installed +/- 30 degree slews.

Telstra didn't pick up on the error. I discovered the real slews when
doing Proof of Performance tests a couple of years ago (which I'll be
doing next week too - so no email please).

That's why some odd numbers like 20, 40 & 100 deg. might appear. With 100
deg. I'm trying to provoke long-path to Europe as well as covering the
southern Pacific Ocean. With 11 MHz that aerial has an azimuth beam ~ +/-
20 degrees so we have a chance of covering bearings within 080-120 deg.
(Nigel Holmes, RA, dxld May 17)

Logged below

RA reception really degraded: May 17 at 0137 UT, can't hear it on usually
inbooming 19000 kHz, nor on 17795 kHz. But by 0233 UT, 19000 kHz has
become poorly audible.

15515 May 17 at 0308 UT, poor signal but enough to tell RA is in French,
the new service for partner stations at 0300 UT M-F, but not always. By
0505 UT, now back in English starting 'Pacific Beat', 15515 kHz has arisen
to usual very good strength.

11945 May 18 at *0559 UT, RA pops on fair signal with IDs, 0600 UT
timechex only for 5 pm in Port Vila, 6 pm in Suva, then news. I was
waiting for this since at 06-10 UT, 11945 kHz is scheduled with an unique
azimuth, 100 degrees from Shepparton. Nigel Holmes confirms it's correct
and intentional. It seems that the TCI antennas were supposed to have
slews of 20 degrees, but axually 30 degrees, so the 70-degree one can
really aim at 100 degr, which would be favorable for Europe far beyond.
How is 11945 kHz coming in there?

11945 , May 23 at 1300 UT, RA is missing, tho it was OK before 1300 UT;
then find 9580 kHz also off. Power failure? Then check 6020 kHz and still
audible there with poor signal by now. By 1303 UT, 9580 and 11945 kHz are
both back on, inbooming for the rest of the news.

AUSTRALIA 4835 May 29 at 1219 UT, JBA carrier detectable in my dratted
hi noise level on 60mb, presumably VL8A, Alice Springs, which tnx to tip
from Nigel Holmes via Craig Seager, ARDXC, is now sticking to this
frequency day and night instead of 2310 UT, "because the transmitter
contractors are unable to maintain the automation system that controls the
day-night change-over between 4835 & 2310" kHz. This 'test' could go on
for months or become permanent.

Craig confirmed this was in effect May 28 with 4835 kHz still on at 1315
UT. This certainly improves our chances for hearing it in North America,
except for WWCR splash from 4840 kHz until 1158 UT or so. During our
summer, if not too far after local sunrise, our best opportunity should be
at 1200 UT. Evidently the other two NT stations are continuing to use
120mb at local night, 2325 and 2485 kHz.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld May 29)

From May 28 onwards for a period of a couple of months, there's a chance
you'll hear VL8A running a single-frequency test on 4835 kHz. This is a
high-angle skywave, night service intended primarily for a domestic
audience within 400 km of the transmitter. The reason for the trial is,
because the transmitter contractors are unable to maintain the automation
system that controls the day-night change-over between 4835 and 2310 kHz.
Reception reports on the test should be sent to:

Gary Baxter, ABC Transmission Services, Box 9994, Sydney NSW 2001,
AUSTRALIA and not to the address of R. Australia. Received direct from
Nigel Holmes, RA.

1 from South America
3 reports from Asia (2x Japan, 1 Sri Lanka)
There is 1 still to come from Asia (India)
In general, only 2 listeners were using stand alone DRM receivers. Others
were software solutions.
So it becomes 16.

It can be noted that they received only 15 reports on DRM out of 136.

DXA QSL - Guido Schotmans schrieb mir heute:

Hello everyone,
The QSL cards are ready and will be put in the mail today.

Until now we received 136 reports from 35 countries.
Details are shown at <http://www.dx-antwerp.com>

This is a nice result. Comparing with our broadcast from 10 years ago we
noticed a substantial increase from India and the United States. It's is
strange to see that no reports were seen from typical DXers countries like
Sweden and Norway. Furthermore it's quite obvious that reporting by
ordinary mail dropped but we still received 24 and maybe there are more to
come.

In a few weeks from now we will put the complete program online for free
download.

We say a big thank you to everyone that reported reception and also for
the kind wishes from all over the world.
73, Guido Schotmans.

Re: Panoramio Images: 6190 Berlin-Britz SW site, with recent
comments by Kai Ludwig.

<http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/31954514.jpg>

WB: Picture taken from westerly view before 2005year, like at
52 26 51.21 N 13 25 32.41 E

Older easy reserve MW antenna in grey colour in foreground.
Visible on G.E. images from Oct 2000 onwards,
but dismantled already on image in September 2005

KL: This was the nighttime antenna for 990 kHz, consisting of two crossed
dipoles and producing no groundwave but a steep upwards skywave signal
only, as a specialty (as opposed to, as an example, the 1575 kHz system at
Burg with plain horizontal polarization) with circular polarization.

This antenna had to be shut down in 1995 because it produced in the
vicinity of the transmitter site too high field strengths which have no
longer been tolerated at this time. For the same reason also planned tests
of 1359 kHz for Evangeliums-Rundfunk from Berlin-Koepenick never took
place: A ban has been imposed over switching on the 250 kW transmitters
there ever again.

Thus since 1995 only the vertical mast can be used for 990 kHz anymore,
which resulted in a severe deterioration at night.

WB: After 56 years alternate reception path to the audience on eastern
communist block, even to German national minorities in Baltics, Poland,
CSSR, Hungary and Romania, 6005 kHz service was taken out of service in
July 2007, after severe damage and beyond repair on the 100 kW TX unit.

KL: In fact replacing the burnt through transformer would have been too
expensive for doing it within the regular "mediumwave maintenance" scheme.
And taking one away from Juelich was no option either, the transmitters
there were called S 4001 as well but differed from the Berlin-Britz one in
some ways, unfortunately also in regard of the transformer in question.

<http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/53696290.jpg>

WB: Older RIAS Berlin steep angle antenna of 20 kW (at present 17 kW on
6190 kHz), started service on 6005 kHz to communist Germany GDR target on
15 August 1951, during nighttime and winter months.

KL: The transmitter sits in the shack in front of the antenna, to the
left, probably (I don't recall exactly) even behind the window besides the
door.

Recently I saw some questions about this: The 1950 vintage transmitter is
rated at 20 kW and, for obvious reasons, no longer run at full power; the
usual power level is now 17 kW after it were 14 kW and even less for some
time.

Officially the whole thing does no longer exist at all, it lingers around
under cover of the mediumwave operations. So asking about 6190 kHz when a
failure occurs could in fact be counterproductive if it makes the matter
too prominent.

Their website is <http://www.transportradio.nl> and they are also audible
on the internet around the clock. I just received a QSL-card, form letter
and stickers from Transportradio in a R Netherlands envelope. They confirm
my assumption that the transmitter location is Wertachtal with 500 kW*.

yes, just received their qsl for an earlier transmission during an
exhibition for truck drivers in the Netherlands. The qsl says "500 kW

stickers, one of them for the new "Onderweg" program.

KBC Radio announces a new "shortwave scanner" and an active antenna to be
introduced later this year for mobile reception of 6095 kHz. Here in

GERMANY Wertachtal Video and Pictures.

Yesterday on May 18th 2012 I once more visited the Wertachtal
Transmittersite for a tour.

This time I was able to do the tour with Wertachtals Plant Manager
Mr. Walter Neumann.

He took me by car to the antenna park where i could take pictures close to
the antenna's.

The first batch of pictures i took you'll find in Album #81 SW :
Wertachtal 2012.

Have fun!

For those of you who want to see what i have been doing in Wertachtal
there is a short 4 mins. video clip on YouTube.

What you see : switching on the transmitter. You hear and see the studio
signal coming in. Putting a sticker from the radio organization that rents
the transmitter on the tranny. Tour by car through the Antenna park to the
non directional antenna for 6095 kHz.

It can be seen here :

GERMANY 3995 / 6005 Thank you so much for your kind letters, reception
reports and comments regarding our last transmission in April. We were
wondering how we could thank you (besides of sending you our brand new QSL
card, what we did already) and came to the conclusion that a magical
selection of amazing tunes from all over the world would be the greatest
"thank you" we could send out to all of you. Well, after having finished
writing down our playlist, we aren't sure anymore wheather our selection
of music is that magical acutally, but we hope you will like it anyway
(plus dance while listening to our records which we will have in the show,
too!)

To sum it up: The seventh edition of NordAM will be broadcasted next
Saturday:

Sat 2nd June 2012

1400-1500 UTC on 6005 kHz
2000-2100 UTC on 3995 kHz

We use Radio 700's transmitters in Kall-Krekel, Germany (with 1000 Watts).
Furthermore, we can be heard on Radio 700's online live streaming. Just go
to

<http://radio700.de/player/player_kw.php?p=1>

and select the frequency we are currently broadcasting on. These streams
and frequencies normally carry the nice broadcasts of Radio 700.

Once again, we will bring you some current (Indie) pop and rock music from
all over the world and hope to bring you around 60 minutes of
entertainment and joy. Furthermore, we have a short listener's mailbox-
program and invite you to send us again your comments and reception
reports. Detailled and correct reports will be verified with our new QSL
card (by regular mail or email). Please send all your letters and reports
to:

<nordam @ shortwaveservice.com>

Or visit our Facebook site:
<http://www.facebook.com/pages/NordAM/231948116860158>

We would like to thank all listeners for writing and sending reports
regarding our previous transmission. If you like, you can add some
comments on our show and tell us if you liked the music we played. All
reception reports of our previous transmission have been confirmed and the
QSLs were posted on May 19th. Of course we are also glad to hear from you
if you have any advice for us regarding new bands etc., maybe from your
hometown or -country.

We are excited to read where our little "student-radio-project" can be
received. Feel free to forward these information to your DXing friends.

Let's meet in the 49 and 75 metre-band next Saturday!

All the best, Torben & Daniel

15705 weak S=7-8 signals in whole Europe, on Perseus rx net little
stronger in Finland, Korea and Japan. S=9+10 bis +20dB. Nothing heard in

INDIA 1071 Two things to report both concerning Rajkot tx. Firstly,
Alokesh Gupta has reported (via DX Top News) that the replacement 1000 kW
transmitter has in fact been installed and tests are to start shortly.

Secondly, I checked the GE area around Paddhari - well to the NW of Rajkot
at
22 30 07 N 70 31 06 E. The 4 masts are now clearly visible. ITU has 1071
kHz recorded as omnidirectional. I have followed the angle of the antenna
array at 305 degrees and arrived at Karachi. Should anyone know the
correct azimuth for Rajkot B, please let me know!

Once regular use of 1071 restarts (presumably returning to use Urdu,
Sindhi, and Baluchi) then I will classify it as Active.

Thursday, May 10, 2012 Lao National Radio [illustrated]
<http://shortwavedxer.blogspot.com/2012/05/lao-national-radio.html>

Reception report was emailed on the following day. On 15 May 2012, Inpanh
Satchaphansy, Director of Foreign Language Service for Lao National Radio,
emailed promising to send a QSL (see actual email above). His message

MOLDOVA/UZBEKISTAN 17605 May 21 at 1325, YFR Burmese is still a good
signal, far, far, away from the target, and the transmitter. As I reported
before, site shown as Tashkent in HFCC, but Kishinov in WRTH, so I asked
Dan Elyea at WYFR which is correct?

"Hi Dan, Have been getting YFR Burmese broadcast at 13-14 UT on 17605,
with quite a good signal. This was registered in HFCC as TAC Uzbekistan
site, but WRTH update shows it as KCH Moldova. I could not believe it was
that good from Uzbekistan, and seems to me it's too strong even for
Moldova here. Could it be Germany? Please confirm what the correct site
is. Thanks, Glenn"

Dan replies: "The registration was correct, Glenn, but maintenance at the
TAC site temporarily prevents their provision of the service (no date for
restoration). So the WRTH update is actually correct with the KCH. That's
500 kW on a 4/8/0.8 antenna."

"Dan, Thanks for the explanation. KCH must put plenty of signal off the
back. Do you know if TAC site is totally down? Or have all FSI
transmissions at least been moved elsewhere too, details? (I assume there
were more scheduled, haven't checked). Glenn" to Dan.

Dan replies again: "Agreed, Glen[n]; one of the sidelobes must fall near
325 degrees for you to get such a good signal. FSI presently has a TAC
transmission to India, 500 kW, 4/4/1, 14-15 UTC, 15450 kHz, Assamese. So
TAC is not totally down. 73, Dan"

Once again May 22 at 1316 with hymn in Burmese, 17605 has good signal and
modulation but with flutter, and held up well for the rest of the hour. If
Grigoriopol' is aiming right at Yangon, directly off the back would enter
America at the eastern tip of Venezuela, far off from here.

Hello dear Wolfgang,
regarding our high gain antenna systems ("Luch" type) which you mentioned,
both of them are in full set, but they are not used nowadays. By the way,
antenna of 315 degr contains 3 driver masts (for 3 directions: 289 degr,
310 degr, 315 degr). Both 36 degr and 315 degr antennas are tunable
through 6.5 - 25 MHz band (by means of rail systems). Earlier these
antennas were used with single 500 kW or 1250 kW TX unit, but it was so
long ago...

Test from South Africa on Victoria Day.
The HFCC file from 19 May lists a test transmission from Meyerton / South
Africa on Monday, 21 May 2012, on 15430 kHz at 0800-0910 UT, for CIRAF
zones 46S, 52, 47SW (Central Africa), 250 kW, 330 degrees, in English. The
broadcaster is "CAF SNT", so Channel Africa programming might be carried.
(Eike Bierwirth-D, hcdx May 19)

Re: Test from South Africa on Victoria Day.

Victoria Day is an interesting concept for southern and central Africa,
since Victorian Britain is held in a lot of contempt by most ex-British
African states.

I know that Victoria Day eventually became Empire Day throughout most of
the British Empire / Commonwealth, and whilst despising the concept, after
independence several southern and central African countries couldn't bring
themselves to abolish the public holiday that came with it. So they
changed the name.

This year the public holiday is on May 25, celebrated as "Africa Day" in
Lesotho and Zimbabwe, and as "Africa Freedom Day" in Zambia. Lesotho also
makes it "Heroes' Day". Neighbouring countries fancied a public holiday
as well, so "Africa Day" is also celebrated in Angola (ex Portugese) and
Namibia (ex-German, but later annexed by South Africa). South Africa
itself, full of abhorance for anything related to the British Empire /
Commonwealth, simply pretends the day and its associated holiday never
existed; no one here seems to have heard of it. Not that we need it; we
already have 14 public holidays each year, much to the dismay of our
private-sector economists.

I am unable to find any information about a special transmission on the
Channel Africa web site. Having listened on the 15430 and alternate 15450
frequencies from 0725 to 0830 UT, nothing seems to be happening. Not even
a change of background noise to suggest a possible DRM transmission in
progress. Of course, with the transmitter only 25 miles away it could all
be going right over my head to central Africa, but I would normally hear
something, however poor. Would be interested to hear if anyone else picks
it up.
Regards,

hour earlier than in the Aokilist XLS.file. From 1530 to 1533 UT closedown
the Ceylon National Anthem Sri Lanka Matha sung in the choir
<http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka_Matha>

The 'joke' station on 12225 kHz was heard every day with Latin music,
probably also comes from Ekala, measured exact 12225.001 kHz noted strong
on May 24, and today May 29 was also to listen at 1534-1600 UT.

Probably in the order of the SLK Secret Service to jam cover stifle the
delicate 'radio program' plant of the Tamil terrorist offsprings and
coming on the radio band at 12 MHz.

The customary has contributed to the discovery by the Indian radio
amateurs:
clumsiness of the station staff in Ekala that a similar 11905 and
12225 kHz program has sent out.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews May 24/29)

Aoki now has listed it May 21 but without any power or site info:
"12250 Tamil naatham Radio 1500-1600UT daily Tamil TGTE a12 May 18-"

The far-out-of-band frequency suggests the site is a big secret, as it's
hard to believe M&B, BaBcoCk or Russia/CIS would admit to using such a
frequency. WRN confirms they are not involved in this. The fact that it is
audible at all here on the opposite worldside indicates that power is
considerable.

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE)* today announced that it
will start broadcasting Radio News to the Island of Sri Lanka starting
from May 18, 2012; the 3rd anniversary of the Genocide of Tamils by the
Sri Lankan Government forces.

The Tamil Government's Radio called Naatham will broadcast in shortwave
frequency. This Radio can also be heard in India, Malaysia and Singapore
where large number of Tamils live. While this broadcast will become a
bridge between the Tamil diaspora and the Tamils living in Tamil homeland,
it will also play a role of politically and emotionally link Tamils
worldwide.

The first special broadcast will be on May 18 th (Friday), for one hour
from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Sri Lanka time. TGTE has designated May 18th as
the Tamil National Mourning Day to remember tens of thousands of Tamils
who were killed simply and solely on account of their Tamil nationality.*

"While the Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka are struggling to cope with
the mass killing and be subject to systematic and pervasive human rights
violation on account of their Tamil nationality, this broadcast will ease
the pain and give them confidence that their dream of achieving sovereign
and independent state of Tamil Eelam will become a reality" said
Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, Prime Minister of the Transnational Government
of Tamil Eelam (TGTE). "This broadcast will pierce the strict media
censorship in Sri Lanka and reach the Tamils to give them unbiased
information."

22 May 2012, 1500 UT 12250 kHz opens with fair signals with Afro beat
music and at 1507 UT plays Ricky Martin track. All of other music played
is western pop disco etc - nothing remotely Asian in flavour leave alone
patriotic Tamil in nature.

To suggest a frequency dedicated to the 3rd anniversary of Tamil Genocide
playing non stop disco, pop etc is a cruel joke.

UKRAINE [c.f. BC-DX #1066] Ukraine's medium wave scene update.

On May 15, Ukrainian Radio resumed broadcasting medium wave transmitter
which were previously silent.

Re Ukraine - Radio just noticed in these few days:
1431 kHz Luch, Mykolaiv region is ON +0500-1800* UT. It looks like they
use 150 kW only and s.off earlier (not turning power down).

Re: Ukraine - Radio Promin on 549 kHz. Thanks, Wolfgang.
Interesting details. Both Lutch (Mykolayiv) & Brovary (Kyiv) are audible
here (33e/49n) daytime, ca. 250 km (South - Lutch, NW - Brovary).

Both txing on exact frequencies which are a bit above center, so forming
"thick" trace on Perseus waterfall:
549.0002-.0003 kHz. Tudor in NE-ROU is getting their signal from Krasne
(Lviv), I guess on groundwave.

Half megawatt from Lutch looks like true. I believe Brovary's power is not
less 100 kW. Is it possible they re-launched former 207 kHz txmtr on
549 kHz ?). Hardly noticeable echo between Brovary's & Lutch's TXers.

Historical note: 549 is "conflict" channel with Russia (old post URS
story, when few newly formed countries (RUS/BLR/UKR/AZE/etc.) inherited
parts of huge All-Union "Radio Mayak" network.

I see from Gov radio links: <http://www.ukrtvr.org/841> etc.
also 1242 kHz Donetsk should be reactivated (will check later this
evening) and they list 549 kHz as Lutch-500, Kyiv-150, Lviv-75 kW.

News from Microtelecom: Perseus / Studio 1 Bundle.

Mark Skidmore wrote:
Please forgive my ignorance but could someone clarify the functionality of
Studio 1 when used in conjunction with Perseus on remote servers.

This capability is not explicitly mentioned in the limited Studio 1
literature and I therefore conclude that it might not be possible.

And carrying on from that thought - if it is possible to connect remotely,
would the Studio 1 dongle be required at the remote location, the
listening location, or both?
(in <perseus_SDR @ yahoogroups.com> )

I'm sure that Studio 1 is "not a waste of money" and that much effort has
gone into its development.

On the other hand, without "client-server operation," it would be very
limited for my use at present.

I have an SDR-IQ and downloaded SDR-Radio for free. That has "client-
server" ability. Even Sigmira has this ability. In this day and age, not
having remote capability seems to me to be very limiting. To have Perseus
version 4 software, and now not have remote capability with a new featured
program like Studio 1 seems a bit odd to me. Perhaps I am missing
something obvious.
(Steven M Sherman-USA AA6IO, <perseus_SDR @ yahoogroups.com> May 27)

Mark, I think that referring to Studio 1 as a possible "waste of money" is
not very kind in general, given the huge amount of time spent in the
development of this product and the objective results obtained. Returning
back to your question, Studio 1 does not currently support client server
operation; however this feature is planned.
