January 31, 2013

Well the week was pretty poor but the weekend blossomed like approaching spring as a quick scan down the list will show you.
L22D (Isla Gama, Argentina) was really popular along with ZK3T (Tokelau Islands) and lots of others particularly on Saturday and Sunday when I had to raise the rate to 5 or more contacts.

VK5MRD, Dave , sent in this from last Wednesday, “Here is my list for today. I could hear a few VK3`s on scatter working Serge UR3CTB. Also had a lot of QRM from Russia. A surprise was having G0OUF call me. He was quite weak but workable.” RV5K , PD1RK , G0OUF , RA3EA , UR3C. Sunday, “I didn’t get on till late and for the most part 10m was very quiet here in VK5. I did manage to hear a few stations though late into the evening. A few surprises too.
Stations heard were:- OE1DWC, ON7LX, GW4BLE and TJ3AY via Long Path, Stations worked were:- IK6CWQ and VK2NSS.” Tuesday, “Very poor conditions again tonight. Not much time again as little daughter wasn’t feeling well. I did hear DK3EE out there but only one station worked, UR3CTB.” Wednesday, “Just one station worked on 10m today. Sergey UR3CTB. Quite a good copy too. He also videoed our QSO and it is up on YouTube.

Paul, HS0ZIN sent in, “This Sunday was better than the last two for me started 08:00 UTC till 11:44 fade outsweet spot G GW GI EI total 27.15 ON contest stations +EA8, R3, DL, UX, HB9, IK, OE, PD, F, YO, IT9, SV2, JA. 65 total, a good day.” Good indeed.

I also had a curious message from FG1JD and FG5KC. “I begin to give you information as we are trying to see the contest rules to 10m from the island of Guadeloupe.
Aurra like that title: 10M HF CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE ISLAND OF GUADELOUPE”. I have no date for this contest which could be interesting if it goes ahead.

Upcoming activity (though not guaranteed to be on 10m). Information from NG3K, DXwatch.com and 425DXnews

Sun: 5 sunspots but not actually flaring.
On Feb. 15th an asteroid about half the size of a football field will fly past Earth closer than many man-made satellites. Since regular sky surveys began in the 1990s, astronomers have never seen an object so big come so close to our planet. [full story] [video]

Stoke City got knocked out of the FA Cup by a last-gasp goal from Man City. That’s footy.
We drew with Wigan on Tuesday despite being 2 goals up at one point. Arsenal this coming weekend, that’ll be a tough one.
