CUBA Cuban Spanish Numbers on 11530 at 2300 UT.
I hear cuban numbers daily on 11635 and 11530 kHz (as you noted). The very
first thing I heard on my new PL380 was HM01 (the enigma 2000 designation
for the mixed mode Cuban numbers). Also heard 10715 kHz yesterday. These
frequencies are active at different times from 2000-2300 UT. They don't
seem to start right at the top of the hour like the Cuban lady used to
they're about 2-3 minutes after the hour although the carrier is on well
before then. check here for new HM01 logs

Spanish Numbers heard on 11530 at 2300 UT in Spanish with same format as
previously observed channels, with digital hash between numbers voice by YL
robotic like tone. Fair Reception on the PL380 portable this session with
45-56 db's noted. Does anyone know any other frequencies this broadcast
has been on in past airings?

Check through GH's DXLD issues for reference. I'am sure The Cuban Spy
Agency may be behind these transmissions eminating from Havanna, Cuba.

17480 has Spanish Numbers Broadcast from Cuba.
Spy Numbers Station with same numbers in Spanish at 2207 UT tune in.
76 db gain on the PL380 Portable. Have not checked on the main receiver
for signal but I assume it's there as well. Digital hash bursts like a
cable modem or router noise on this channel with repeated numbers in
Spanish between bursts. Good signal noted at this hour. Thanks to tips
from the list I noted the other frequencies at times carry same program
format.

ECUADOR Umfirmieren von HCJB auf Andenstimme.

Hi Siegbert,

Interessen in Deutschland vertritt!

Leben in Paraguay eingehen.

Irene Schirmacher

Horst Rosiak

GABON Africa No. 1.
"In Africa, shortwave broadcaster Africa No. 1 in Gabon has closed down,
at least on shortwave. Africa No. 1 operated three 500-kilowatt shortwave
transmitters in Moyabi. The station has serious financial problems, and
reportedly the staff hasn't been paid for months. At the time of writing,
the station's webfeed was still on the air."

Africa No. 1 nicht unterscheiden konnte.

ueber <www.biener-media.de/index-alt.htm> moeglich.

GERMANY / GDR history DDR / MDR Weida MW site 1458 kHz, exact location

GREECE 1260 / 1494 Mediumwave transmitter of Rhodes back to the
historical frequency

Another change concerning the mediumwave broadcasting of the public Greek
Radio service took place a few weeks ago. The mediumwave transmitter of
ERA Rhodes now broadcasts to a new frequency, as it moved from the
frequency of 1494 kHz to 1260, late December. The new frequency appears to
be extremely clear in terms of interference. The transmitter coverage
during the day reaches the island of Crete, while in the evening it also
covers quite well northern Greece and a large area of the Balkans.

It should be noted, for historical reasons, that the frequency of 1260 was
used until recently by the VOA.In 1952, they began broadcasting services
in Arabic, Turkish and English language to the Eastern Mediterranean and
the Middle East. The broadcast was originally done from a ship off the
coast of Rhodes, with a mediumwave antenna hung onto helium balloons,
whereas in 1964 a transmitter on the territory of the island was built.
Voice of America had given exceptional attention to specific frequency for
60 years and relayed its program with a powerful AM transmitter power
500 kW, while in 1977 it became the first station fed via satellite from
the central studio in Washington. The first service of ERA also used to be
relayed for three hours daily (12.00 until 15.00) from this frequency.

The second frequency of the Voice of America, at 792 kHz from Kavala, is
now used by the E.R.A. Sports, which broadcasts from New Malgara,
Thessaloniki.

If we are allowed to comment, perhaps we would suggest reconsidering the
content of programs broadcasted by the specific frequency of Rhodes.
Particularly inthe evening, the multicultural but purely musical, service
named Kosmos is being sent. Perhaps it would be a better idea to play
something more multilingual and informative, taking advantage of the
extended coverage and the history of frequency.

Re: [mwdx] Mediumwave transmitter of Rhodes back to the historical
frequency.

The MF equipment (Harris DX-600 transmitter, and towers etc from the newer
IBB MF site) were all dismantled and moved to another location by IBB/BBG.

The IBB site at Rhodes was, of course, the second location of the 1260 kHz
antenna, replacing the original at the opposite end of the site. It was
moved due to the loss of the lease for the land under one of the towers of
the three element MF array at the original location.

The 2b) location confirmed to me - my surprise -, when I looked out to
Google Earth some 5 years back in 2007 year, ... and revealed the
220 meters northerly VOA masts location instead.

So, nice comment from US, correction
VOA MW Rhodes 1259/1260 kHz had three different locations
between 1953 and 2006:
36 24 49.46 N 28 13 41.57 E til 1965
36 16 21.84 N 28 10 04.90 E til 1985
36 16 27.26 N 28 10 08.25 E til 2006, April 25.

there were two locations #2, i.e.

2a Former second IBB Rhodes-B stn at Vagia Point, Afandou Beach.

    36 16 21.84 N 28 10 04.90 E

2b moved later 200 meter northwards to it's final location
    36 16 27.26 N 28 10 08.25 E
    Harris 500 kW in 1986 til April 25, 2006.

IRAN 21160 A3E taeglich spurious signal oder Intermodulation von
1130-1200 UT.

IRIB Tehran in Hausa Sprache ueber Dipolantennen ITU type '218'

kHz UTC-z WeAF Sirjan kW deg ant daily
21480 1130-1200 46,47 SIR 500 263 0 218 HAUSA IRN IRB
21800 1130-1200 46,47 SIR 500 256 0 218 HAUSA IRN IRB
Standort Sirjan, dort viele schoene AEG Telefunken Sender
und Antennen von 500 kW. Location at
<http://goo.gl/maps/9nOop>

Intermodulation
2 x 21480 = 42960 minus 21800 = 21160 kHz.
Symmetrische Intermodulation auch auf 22120 kHz ! oberhalb.

sommers meist
21505 1130-1200 46,47 SIR 500 270 0 156 HAUSA IRN IRB
21750 1130-1200 46,47 SIR 500 263 0 218 HAUSA IRN IRB

Intermodulation
2 x 21505 = 43010 minus 21750 = 21260 kHz.

Re: 7295 terrible modulation of RTM Kajang MLA.
Noted same thing here at 1504 with English news. Audio very distorted,
which was a shame as their signal strength was good. Had just tuned here
after checking 6050 kHz sign off of Salam FM via Kajang, with 1502* UT.

MOLDOVA Radio Moldova International.
Within the seating from January 25, the Boarding Council of the Public
Institution of the Audiovisual the Company Teleradio Moldova decided the
reorganization of the RMI Department. As we have already informed you in
our programs, we will not broadcast programs in foreign languages, but we
will translate the web page of the Company into Russian and English. The
upper mentioned changes will happen for a 2 month period.

The RMI team thanks to everyone who backed us through their messages
addressed to the authorities and encouragement for our team.

Thanks a lot to our devoted listener Jerónimo Zamora from Mexico, who
organized a real campaign to back RMI, to Manuel Arismendi from Chile, who
reported our situation for a radio station, Mr. Christian Ghibaudo,
Maurice Mercier and Guy Le Louet, President of the Radio Club from Perche;
France, to the broken heart listener from India Jayanta Chakrabarty, Erik
Peter Stephensson and Richard D'Angelo from USA, Helmut Matt, Oliver
Fülla, Ralf Urbanczyk and Daniel Kaehler, all of them from Germany, to
Eduardo Peñailillo Barra from Chile, Ian Morrison from China, Serghei
Loba?eev from Russia, Miguel Angel (unfortunately we do not know his home
country), we thank to all people who came with good reasons to keep our
radio station. Unfortunately, your messages didn't convince the
authorities on the need of such a radio station in the world. The main
reason, invoked by the administration was the low number of listeners of
our programs. We did our best to keep RMI, but it is not our decision.

We thank you for the fact that you backed us. Stay tuned with us for the
next 2 months.

PORTUGAL Sines SW site.

I thought my eyes were playing tricks back in December last when we drove
south to our SW coast place:
the Sines towers were not visible at the distance!

Upon our return home, I was determined to see whether I really needed new
glasses or..., but that was not the case after all. No towers in sight!

In early January, while driving south again, I decided to make a brief
detour and see for myself only to find the big curtain antennae and the
fixed 75 m band curtain at the back were all gone. No transmission lines
for the 3 curtains, nothing. Only the concrete bases of them stood as a
testimonial to the once HF activity of the Monte Mudo site, Sines. My
contact within the station has just revealled to me, that the remaining
employees stayed at the Sines office while the demolition company hired by
Pro-Funk GmbH took care of it all, meaning only the walls remained,
literally.

I thought, well, the lines, the antennae are gone, but not the txs;
surely, they were sent away and sold by Pro-Funk/DW. My assumption
couldn't be more wrong! The three beasts -plus- the expensive test
equipment, anything you can possible imagine, was destroyed while still in
the house and taken away as scrap!!!

In sum, a "good, reasonable" end to property paid with German taxpayers'
money.

Now, I can't remember whether I commented the following, perhaps not, but
can now say what's no longer a secret:

the RTP even approached Pro-Funk in order to assess the possibility to
turn the Sines site into an enlarged, combined DW/RTP station in case São
Gabriel had to be demolished because the new Lisboa airport is or was
planned to be built in the vicinity of our CEU/CEOC.

When the RTP & DW/Pro-Funk met, there were already rumors within DW, that
Pro-Funk Sines would possibly close or then sold to a foreign station (I
won't disclose the name for now), a possibility that was rulled out by the
Portuguese authorities which didn't want to keep the station either.
Now, any ideas of which foreigh station it might be?

UKRAINE Reducing broadcast touched on regional radio centers of Ukraine.
R. Nikolaev 1377 kHz has announced a new broadcast schedule: weekdays
07.00-13.00, weekends 08.00-14.00.
(Alexander Yegorov-UKR, open_dx via midxb Febr 5)

Ukrainian state broadcasting faces drastic cuts.
Here is an update to the mediumwave scene of Ukraine.

Several transmitters were switched off back on January 1:
 549 kHz - UR2 - Kyiv-Brovary, Lviv-Krasne, Mykolaiv-Luch
 936 kHz - UR1 - Lviv-Krasne
1242 kHz - UR2 - Donetsk-Dokuchaevsk
1431 kHz - UR3 - Mykolaiv-Luch

The same day broadcasting time was reduced for:
711 kHz - UR1 - Donetsk-Dokuchaevsk (4-8, 15-20 UT only)
657 kHz - UR3/RUI - Chernivtsi (17-23 UT only)
837 kHz - UR1 - Kharkiv-Taranivka (4-8, 15-20 UT only)
972 kHz - UR1 - Mykolaiv-Luch (4-8, 15-20 UT only)

Radio Bukovyna switched off 819 kHz (Novodnistrovsk) in late January but
837 kHz (Chernivtsi) is still in operation (06-17 UT).

Radio Khvylia (1377 kHz, Vinnytsia) reduced transmission hours to
10:00-14:15 UT.

On January 24 it was announced that budget of state TV and radio stations
will be severely cut.

Donetske Oblasne Radio - 2nd Channel (1359 kHz, Donetsk-Dokuchaevsk) was
closed on January 28.

Radio Mykolaiv (1377 kHz, Mykolaiv) reduced time to 07:00-13:00 UT on
Mondays-Fridays and 08:00-14:00 UT on Saturdays and Sundays.

On February 5, ALL transmitters carrying state national and regional
channels in the low FM band (64-72 MHz) were switched off, so
UR-1/2/3/regional channels can now be heard in very few locations because
NRCU has few licences in that band {i.e. western FM band 87-108 MHz, wb}.

As for MW, the majority of transmitters are also inactive. No trace of:
 711 kHz - UR1 - Donetsk-Dokuchaevsk (off since Jan 28)
 657 kHz - UR3/RUI - Chernivtsi
 837 kHz - UR1 - Kharkiv-Taranivka
 972 kHz - UR1 - Mykolaiv-Luch
1377 kHz - UR2 - Chernivtsi

No idea as for 1044 kHz carrying UR1 (Verkhovyna, 1 kW).

Still on the air:
 765 kHz - Radio Mayak (Odesa-Petrivka) 05-23 UT
837 kHz - Radio Bukovyna (Chernivtsi) 06-17 UT
873 kHz - Dnipropetrovske Oblasne Radio (Ch.2) Dnipropetrovsk 06-18 UT
1377 kHz - Radio Khvylia (Vinnytsia) 10-14:15 UT
1377 kHz - Radio Mykolaiv (Mykolaiv) 07-13 UT Mo-Fr, 08-14 UT Sa,Su

80% of the Rampisham towers have been felled, complete with antennas.
The building is in a similar state.

There's a possibility that when I visit my mother 20 miles away shortly

Re: Rampisham SW masts demolished.
There's an article about this in the January 18 Bridport News:
"All but three of the 34 existing steel towers - some more than 100 metres
high - are due for demolition if permission is given for a solar panel
park that will create around 70 full-time jobs.

Under the plans the three left would be for TV and mobile phone signals
and potential future wireless broadband."

There were objections submitted to the local council on the plans,
including keeping two of the masts. There's a short history of the site at
the end of the article.

U.K. Skelton and Cyprus sites to go silent?

Wolfy has spotted that although Babcock have made some summer season
registrations for Woofferton, they have not made any at all for Skelton
and Cyprus. I made enquiries and have been told that Skelton will indeed
be going silent from 31 March. However, it's not being closed (at least
for the time being) but kept in reserve {kept in mothballed standard?}.
I have assumed for a while that the existence of the Naval VLF transmitter
at Skelton, and the nearby VLF at Anthorn, also run by Babcock, means that
the station as a whole stood a good chance of surviving.

As Wolfy also noted, Woofferton now has an array for 4 MHz, so that is no
longer a reason for keeping Skelton running.

So, just over 30 years ago there were five active SW sites in the UK -
Crowborough, Daventry, Rampisham, Skelton, Woofferton) but soon there will
only be one.

I suppose this is to be expected when considering the reduction in BBC
external services. It is mostly brought about by the current government's
lack of financing for the external services.

The BBC is having to find money out of the domestic licence fee instead,
and that has been fixed at a low sum of money that has to pay for all
domestic radio and TV. Guess which comes first in priority.

It will be interesting to see what remains of the BBC external services at
the end of March, and what other services utilise Babcock facilities. I
notice that the morning DRM transmission is still [also] registered on
5875 kHz - I wonder why? Surely the testing phase is over and it must be
for some other reason.

Re: Test transmission on 3955 kHz.
The transmission heard on 3955 kHz yesterday morning was an AM & DRM
antenna match test in preparation for the start of 3955 DRM from

Early next week [Febr 11-15], the evening KBS & RTI AM services will also

Tests on 3955 kHz are on-going during the day (GMT+0) while we check the
antenna match to each transmitter.

USA/BOTSWANA/SRI LANKA VOA replied to two 2011 reports with a single
card. The date was shown as 3/27/11-10/289/11 for both reports. Freq and
time were shown correctly, allowing me to figure out that the QSL was for
Botswana 9855 kHz and Sri Lanka 15580 kHz, both apparently sent in July
2011, and QSLed after 563 and 555 days respectively. They also enclosed a
very attractive 2013 wall calendar featuring U.S. National Parks.

VENEZUELA 670 QSL Report for Al Muick. Radio Rumbos, 670, no data
friendly QSL email in 463 days for Spanish airmail report with 3 IRCs and
several failed follow-ups before I found a valid email address for them.
Email QSL comes 60 days after last follow-up to
<rrumbos670am (at) gmail (dot) com> . V/s Francisco Vargas, Presidente,
Radio Rumbos.

Needless to say, I am ecstatic over this QSL! Their fax numbers have all
been disconnected, and there was an outgoing mail embargo from Venezuela
for some time. I managed to find a valid email for them after months of
digging through the web.

I still have my Radio Rumbos QSL from 9660 kHz from their shortwave heyday
in 1976, which was a clamshell with a pearl on the beach. This was one of
the first QSLs I ever received. Sometimes I miss the old days when the
Venezuelans were all over 60 meters.

RIP
Roger Kirk{Vanderkerk} - Ernst Wronna - Ernst Roger Kirkov -
exciting music and free radio life ...

Roger Kirk starb am 4. Dezember 2012.

Dass Roger Kirk, der Gruender der Kurzwellenmusikstation Radio Victoria
am 4. Dez. 2012 nach schwerer Krankheit verstorben und am 12. Dez. 2012

(Jens Hofstadt-D, A-DX Jan 14)

Michael Bethge
