ANGOLA 4949.75 0457-0512 UT. African hi-life music at tune-in. Just
before top of the hour, male with ID for "Radio Nacional de Angola" and
list of frequencies. 4 time pips, and possible mention of " horas." Then
canned ID by male voice with music and flair; lots of "bom dia"s, and into
what seemed to be a news feature program, with man and woman passing it
back and forth with reporters in the field. Poor to fair, but best in many
months of trying to chase down a positive ID from this station. As Glenn
noted the other day, the modulation on this station has improved a lot in
the last month or so.

BELGIUM [non] 17870-17875-17880 on Feb 14 at 2015 UT, still no DRM
noise signal from BRB The Disco Palace via GUIANA FRENCH. I thought I had
tuned across it since then, but in the DRMRX Forum, this was last reported
on 8 January and first reported missing 9 January, both by AF4MP in
Roswell GA.

On 30 January, tpreitzel posted, "I'd like to know as well. I e- mailed
the Disco Palace about a week ago via their address as posted on their
website, but I haven't received a response. The disappearance of the
broadcast could be permanent due to a reduction in the budget of the
sponsoring company or temporary due to a maintenance issue at Montsinery."

Now I've asked Ludo Maes too. This hour still appears on various
schedules.

Hi Ludo, Have not heard TDP for some time on 17875 at 20-21 UT. Has this
been canceled, or the MSY transmitter down temporarily, or ????
(Glenn Hauser to Ludo Maes-BEL BRB, Febr 15 via dxld)

Dear Glenn, There is a problem with the transmitter and spare parts need
to come from France. Unfortunately, no indication when problem will be
solved. Kind regards,

Schedule on SW for the Songhai and pending Bambara?

BBG and VOA offer new options for getting the news to Mali February 19.

Audiences in war-torn Mali will soon have new sources of reliable and up-
to-date news in their own languages thanks to several innovative efforts
by the Voice of America and the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

"The BBG is responding in every possible way to the need for timely
information in Mali, and we are extending our reach, as we have in Iraq,
Afghanistan and other conflict areas," said BBG Board member Susan McCue.
"This vital service will help safeguard lives in Mali with accurate and
comprehensive news, and in widely-spoken local languages as well as in
French. We'll also soon be able to reach more people across the country
through additional affiliate radio stations and via the latest mobile
technology."

"We at Voice of America are keenly aware that the people in Mali are
desperate for reliable information," said VOA Director David Ensor, an
award-winning journalist who throughout his career has worked in conflict
zones and seen first-hand the effect of getting accurate information to
affected populations in a timely fashion. "We are using every tool we have
to help our audience get the news and information they need."

In early March, VOA will launch a Monday-through-Friday radio program in
the Bambara language, which is spoken by more than two million people in
south and central Mali, as well as in Burkina Faso. The half-hour program,
called Mali Kibaru (Mali Information) will focus on news of Mali, but will
also cover the sub-region of Mauritania, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso. It
will include breaking news, analysis, discussion of extremism and health
information.

VOA will continue its daily radio newscast in the Songhai language, which
was launched recently as a pilot project. Songhai is the common language
of northern Mali; some three million people speak or understand it. The
Monday-through-Friday Songhai newscast is available on the popular mobile
platform, Mali1, along with French newscasts. The Mali1 mobile service was
added in August to take advantage of the large and growing number of
mobile phone users, and as a way to get news to regions where extremists
have shut down independent media.

And VOA has just launched a new 15-minute French-language radio program
that covers all the Sahelian countries of Mali, Mauretania, Niger, Chad,
Burkina Faso and northern Sudan. The program, called Sahel Plus, provides
on-the-ground reporting, analysis of the security and social issues of the
Sahel, discussions of U.S. and international policy toward the region,
features on the vibrant culture there, and an opportunity for listeners to
speak their minds.

All VOA programs are broadcast on shortwave, medium wave, the Internet and
mobile platforms. VOA programs will soon be available in Bamako, Mali's
capital, through Interactive Voice Response, a system that helps VOA
distribute and gather the news using local telephone services and the
Internet. IVR is especially useful in regions where there is low bandwidth
for wireless service.

The BBG announced in January that a new transmitter would allow 24/7
broadcasting of targeted news and information in French to listeners in
Bamako. And the agency is assisting a long-time affiliate station in
Bamako, Radio Kledu, in building out a network of stations. Audience
research shows that more than half of all adults in Bamako listen to
Kledu. By the end of February, its signal is expected to reach four
additional stations, with four more expected in the months to come.
The stations will carry VOA programs in French and Bambara.

Re: UnID Arabic on 11620 kHz for HOA.
Thanks! From the name, I suspect this may be linked to the mediumwave
station (918, ex-909 kHz { 1044 kHz too?}) of the same name (Al-Sharq,
literally meaning East, but also meaning Dawn/Sunrise) that broadcasts to
Eritrea from Mekelle in northern Ethiopia (see page 502 of WRTH 2013).

This is normally referred to by its Tigrinya name, Dimtsi Weghata (Voice
of the Dawn).

Here's more about the PMFDAJ, already in English:
<http://www.alhirak.com/about-alhirak>
(Glenn Hauser, dxld)

The ID of the station in Arabic is Idhaat al Shorouk/Shorouq. As you
mentioned, Sunrise Radio.
(Tarek Zeidan-EGY, dxld Febr 20)

11620 Febr 18, carrier on at about *1557.5 UT; 1600 UT some programming
but very weak. This is the new clandestine for Eritrea, first reported
last week, Feb 11 by Ivo Ivanov, who could tell the powerful signal was
coming from Kostinbrod, near him in Sofia, Bulgaria, and also audible on
2x 23240. Jorge Freitas also heard it the next day, not audible in Brasil,
but very good via Twente, Netherlands remote receiver, recorded at
closing:

<http://www.ipernity.com/doc/75006/14251860/>

Tarek Zeidan says it's Arabic with an African accent, but no ID on that
clip, nor did I hear one. Then Ivo copied the ID as "Idhaa-tu Sharoopa (or
Sharooka)". On Feb 14, Hiroshi and S. Hasegawa in Japan reported it as
"unID Arabic station starts in HOA music at *1600 UT on 11620 kHz; ID
sounds like "Idhaat al Sarooka", i.e. This is Sunrise". Recorded at 1608
UT: <http://mediacat.phbb.ne.jp/mcat/BImage.asp?pn=722.64462>

Then I found its Arabic website, [as above]
<http://gash-barka.com/barka/index.php/news/news-reports/9-uncategorised>

So might as well take a tube and bus and visit them! And there is a lot
more on their site in Arabic one could translate.

Chris Greenway replies to the DXLD yahoogroup:

"Thanks! From the name, I suspect this may be linked to the mediumwave
station (918, ex- 909) of the same name (Al-Sharq, literally meaning East,
but also meaning Dawn/Sunrise) that broadcasts to Eritrea from Mekelle in
northern Ethiopia (see page 502 of WRTH 2013). This is normally referred
to by its Tigrinya name, Dimtsi Weghata (Voice of the Dawn)."

WRTH shows its website as http://www.sallina.com and it has lots of
English, but really seems to be a different station. Streamer says it's on
Arabsat as Radio Wegahta, but nothing about 11620.

Today's Aoki has an entry for this, but with incorrect initial
assumption about the language:
11620 Sharoopa 1600-1700 .23456. Somali 50 195 Kostinbrod(Sofia) BUL
02320E 4240N ERI b12 Feb. 11-
Yes, it does appear to be M-F only, and apparently running the same
program every day.

Signal very poor here, no comparison to e.g. 15535 Radio Dabanga,
inbooming via Vatican, but maybe Spaceline 11620 does the job to Eritrea.

As one of the world's most repressive dictatorships, Eritrea certainly
deserves all the opposition radio it can get!

BTW, in the previous hour, 1500-1557 UT on 11620 kHz is occupied by
Romania in Arabic // much better 17540 kHz, an echo apart, so widely
divergent propagation paths? Or because sites are different, Galbeni and
Tiganeshti respectively.

I've noticed the interference in the mornings here in the UK over the past
few days, it is quite apparent during the 1000-1200 period on several
BBCWS English frequencies such as 15285, 15310, 15575, 17760, 17790 etc.

I'm sure its there at other times too. It seems to have been going on for
some time, but because the jamming is a type of white noise or digital
noise, its sometimes difficult to distinguish it from the general
background interference. - 73s Dave

The BBC has said shortwave broadcasts in English of World Service radio
are being jammed in China. In a statement, the corporation said it was not
possible to determine exactly where the blocking was coming from. But it
said the "extensive and co-ordinated efforts are indicative of a well-
resourced country such as China".

"The BBC strongly condemns this action which is designed to disrupt
audiences' free access to news and information," said the statement.

Re: BBC World Service English shortwave radio blocked in China.
WTFK??? BBC isn't saying so we can check it for ourselves. However here is
more about it. The clip includes some tones and the noise does not sound
like DRM. As for being "not possible" to locate, of course it is! With
professional direxion-finding equipment and techniques.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 25)

Reports on Keith Perron's "PCJ Media and PCJ Radio" Facebook group over
the past week have complained of possible jamming on BBC English
frequencies especially on 15310 via Oman and 17790 via Thailand. A digital
signal is being applied overtop that is obliterating reception. Partha
Sarathi Goswami posted a recording of it on

Soundcloud: <https://soundcloud.com/dxinginfo/bbc-17790-interference>

In an e-mail exchange with Steve Handler, we were informed that the
Chinese have never jammed English broadcasts before and such digital
jamming was not their known practice.

However, the BBC have now come out and are blaming the Chinese in two
separate linked stories posted by Dave Kenny:
<http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/statements/shortwave-jamming.html>

and Andy Sennit[t]: <http://www.bbc.co.uk/ariel/21574683>

Not sure the Chinese are missing anything. BBC World Service radio is
rubbish these days. What particularly makes me scream with frustration is
Newsday which sounds like it is produced by schoolkids on a Media Studies
course.

I absolutely agree with your opinion about BBC service rubish these days
(perhaps since past 10 years) ... Now BBC is a source of political agenda.

It seems to me that BBC is runing only for justification of USA and its
western Assistants's policies whether it against war on terror or
economically against China or/and Russia.
(comments on The Guardian, Febr 26)

re BBC World Service shortwave radio blocked in China.

China newly put BBC English service of BBC, VOA and AIR of the jamming
target.

I hear this new jamming like noise jamming by digital jamming (DRM TX?).
In the transmission area, a new jamming basis in seems to be southern
China. This jamming was confirmed for the first time on Febr 10.

Re: Radio Peace??
Ron/Wolfgang, I've been monitoring 4700 since 0304 UT from the Perseus
site in SoEa UK this evening (Febr 18 - UTC). This is not likely Radio
Peace, at least not the Radio Peace that used to be on from the Juba
region in SoSudan circa 2005 ... that station used to have frequent
announcements in English of "Radio Peace" and more religious programming.

This station is all in Somali/Afar or similar HOA dialect, not seeming
Sudanese. Last known freq for R Peace was 4740 kHz but I don't recall if
anyone ever hrd them after they moved from 4750 kHz. This appears to me to
be more of a Radio Hargeysa-type format ... the power is likely 50 kW
plus, not the 1 KW that Radio peace was using when last hrd. Aside from
these observations, I haven't a clue what this might be - not likely a
harmonic, either.

The music hrd at 0304 UT was typical HOA music - but could have been Sudan
type also, based on what I hear from Sudan Radio. Programming hrd after
0340 UT was surely not R. Peace format - again, this sounded more like R
Hargeysa type programming. A quick check of 7120 kHz showed no // pgm and
much better modulation, with very similar signal strength. Transmitter is
highly distorted as Wolfgang pointed out earlier.

Mystery to be solved?? Bruce

Usual Asmara Eritrea programm uses mostly 7175 kHz, but has also been
heard hopping every day on another 5 kHz spacing channel, in range of

FOOTPRINT is alwas minus 9 Hertz, like 7179.991 kHz last week.
Use great Perseus receiver as gauge instrument.

Heard every early HOA morning at least in past half decade.
Look into dxld archive you will see a lot of such logs.

This outlet is often covered by Ethiopian scratchy White Noise jamming of
broadband 16 ... 20 kHz.

The other Asmara program is always on v7205 kHz, but is un-jammed.

Scheduled ERI program languages read in Aoki list under
7175 to 7190 kHz, and on 7205 kHz, both under ERI administration.

Others in ham radio band location are these days

7110 Northern Burma - Myanmar.
7120 Somaliland,
and SLBC Ekala on v7189 kHz.
Latter British empire Philips? unit will cease service soon.

When moved this service in 4 India target languages,
then to new SLBC Trincomalee site soon,
I guess the frequency will then requested in
7205 to 7600 kHz bc band range on exact 5 kHz spacing.

I guess you can hear ERI/ETH easily every morning, in 0300-0700 UT via

whether the two were synchronized, and both were so weak that could not
hear both by adding the DX-375 from the car, so instead tuned 12000.9 kHz
on the inside FRG-7 and rebroadcast it on my 88.1 MHz FM feeder to the

Reception is slightly stronger on 12000.9 kHz, both with good modulation.
Still monitoring both at hourtop to hear what happen: 12000.9 kHz cuts off
just before the 2000 time signal on 11995 kHz which stayed on! So this is
NOT a spur and anyway, there is nothing to match on the lower side of
11995 kHz.

HFCC as of Febr 18 has no RFI on 12000 or 12005, but does show this:

which means that the 18-20 UT portion of the 11995 kHz broadcast is due to

So why in the world is RFI adding another broadcast, apparently also from
Issoudun, 5.9 kHz above the scheduled one?

Recheck the next day Febr 19 at 1847 UT: yes, two RFI signals again, poor,
on 11995.0 and now 12001.0 kHz.

Gentlemen, Thank you for your information and comments regarding some
unwanted radiations of a MSY Tx !

After the measurements we did in Issoudun - France mainland - our
technical staff in Montsinery has been required to check the TX and a
default would have been identified in a "low power HF amplifier".

Unfortunately we will have to wait some weeks to get a spare HF amplifier
because, for the time being, there is no such spare amplifier in MSY.
Sorry for the delay!

11740 Febr 9 at 0502 UT, NHK English relay is already on the air, unlike
last night, and maybe even started at 0500 UT.

I also suspect the 11740 kHz carrier never got turned off, as once again
at 0611, weak French from ROMANIA fights another carrier making fast SAH,
and also some hum typical of Montsinery. 0700 UT *still* just the carrier
with hum; anyway, not hearing any spurs from it. Need to monitor
at 0530 UT when R. Japan relay is supposed to end.

11740 Febr 10 at 0459 UT, NHK IS, so the relay in English is apparently
going to air complete and intact tonight. And at 0700 UT, hummy carrier is
still running on 11740 kHz, probably MSY.

11740 Febr 11 at 0529 UT I tune in just in time to hear NHK English
relay end at 0530* UT with very good signal and definitely turn off the
carrier. Yet at 0615 UT recheck, RRI French again has a fast SAH from
another weak carrier. Revised theory: GUF turns off the main carrier, but
not the exciter? Or maybe it's Vatican which is not supposed to be on
11740 kHz until much later.

15190 Febr 11 at 1211 UT, the only other R. Japan English relay left to
NoAmerica, also via GUF, has only fair signal, but it's the OSOB this
early before sunrise.

I later heard from my contact at TDF that this is the same transmitter
which puts out the spurs from 5960, 9490 and 11740 kHz, so need to look
for those around 15190 kHz, but fundamental is far too weak for them to
have shown up today, and I am preferably and usually asleep at 1200 UT.
They are awaiting a replacement part to fix the spur problem.

just a test? Best signal from them in a long time, and easily the best
heard at this time of day, here on the east coast of USA. In the past I've

with US $5 for return postage.

Finally, fellow DXer Victor Goonetilleke was kind enough to respond to me
and offer to assist, and a day after I sent him my report, I received my
QSL. Thank you so much Victor! It is a great thing when there is a DXer
who can actually liaise with a station to get these QSLs flowing.

In the matter of SLBC, Victor informs me that it is not a matter of not
wanting to respond to QSLs or not being a friendly verifier, but that the
SLBC just doesn't have the staff to keep up with it all. It seems this
problem is all over the world.

TANZANIA [Zanzibar] Puzzle. Log of Unidentified digital mode
on 11735 kHz at 1656-1900 UT tune in on Febr 17.

At 1700-1720 UT noted Dole Zanzibar service with light nice Kisuaheli
music in regular AM mode. But later that night noted broadband - 16 kHz
wide at 11727 to 11743 kHz range - White Noise DIGITAL scratching sound
like from Ethiopian government against opposite Eritrean transmissions on
7, 9 and 15 MHz.

But I think the Tanzanian engineer at Dole-Zanzibar touched some TX
control PC option management ... or was a special outlet at the A-13 HFCC
request meeting in Tunisia which stopped the conference now.

National radio company of Ukraine/
Today (February 11) in about 14.45 resumed broadcasting of the radio
stations of the NRCU on VHF, which almost completely was terminated on
February 5.

Now we have confirmation from cities such as Kiev, Odessa, Nikolaev,
Mariupol, Dnepropetrovsk (UR-1 and Culture), Lviv, Kharkiv, Ternopil,
Khmelnitsky, Uzhgorod (UR-1 and Luch) and others.

From 17.00 joined and CX transmitters of the national radio company of
Ukraine (657, 711, 837, 972 kHz). Recovers broadcasting of the NRCU and
the FM, in particular, in the Kirovohrad, Lviv, Transcarpathian regions.
Waiting for further information from our visitors.

National radio company of Ukraine has received from the Group of the
Radiocommunication, broadcasting and television of information on the
resumption of broadcasting on three channels - the First, the radio
"Promin." and "Culture".

The measures taken in accordance with the instructions of the Prime
Minister Mykola Azarov to the Ministry of Finance to increase expenses for
the broadcasting of TV and radio programmes produced for the state needs.
Let's remind, on February 5, national radio company of Ukraine was forced
to disable the part of the transmitter through the fact that expenditures
on the distribution of programs of the Ukrainian radio has been reduced in
several times against the last year level.

Mykola Azarov has ordered to resume broadcasting of the Ukrainian radio
Prime Minister Mykola Azarov gave the order to deal with the situation
with the termination of the broadcast of the three VHF channel of
Ukrainian radio. About it the participants of the rally under the Cabinet
of Ministers informed the head of the Radical party Oleg Lyashko, the
correspondent of MFN. Just came up to us official from the Cabinet and
said that Mykola Azarov has ordered to deal with the shameful situation
that has evolved around three Ukrainian channels, closed for unknown
reasons. I hope this is true, and we don't have to hold any shares in this
occasion, - said Mr. Lyashko, activists of the party of which take part in
the action in support of the Ukrainian channels.

Note that the action in defense of the Ukrainian radio already gathered
around 100 people.

Let's remind, today, under the building of the government of the shares
are held in the protection of animals and in support of the three closed
channel of Ukrainian radio, who joined their efforts.

As reported by the MFN on Friday, the national Council on television and
radio broadcasting has informed that on the initiative of the National
radio company of Ukraine on February 5, 2013 stopped broadcasting of the
VHF transmitters of all three channels of the Ukrainian radio without
prior announcement and measures.

In particular, stopped broadcasting of UR-1, Luch and UR-3, radio Culture
(the third channel of the National radio of Ukraine) and radio Promin.

USA What about <http://www.overcomerministry.org/> ?
That homepage has been modified with this added on: "9995 12Am EST" the
nincompoop buys all this time on WRMI and can't even get the frequency
right. Starts at 0500 UT, but when does it end? Off and on. And does this
mean some other SW station has been dropped, or had he a windfall of new
money coming in from his dupes?

WRMI finally posted updated schedule grid ca 0200 UT Feb 16
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AivhtkIEGb3_dENObnZrMkt1YmtUWGxkbkd3TGNzOXc&hl=en#gid=0>

showing the huge timeblox just sold to Brother Scare:

04-05 Sun & Mon
05-12 Mon-Sat
06-11 Sunday
13-14 daily
15-16 Saturday
15-24 Mon-Fri
17-20 Sunday
17-22 Saturday

That totals 110 hours per week 65.5% of the entire schedule!

The only remaining times for WORLD OF RADIO are:
Thu 0430, Sat 1600, Tue 1200

AWR WAVESCAN, which Jeff produces, retains:
Mon 1200, Tue 0430, Wed 0100, Wed 1200, Thu 0400, Fri 0415, Sat 0400,
Sat 1200, Sat 2330

You can check the schedule for the rest, including Viva Miami, the
non-English DX programs, R. Prague and Slovakia which remain, plus a
few secular non-DX shows, other gospel and exile programs. No more
World Radio Network filler.

Monitoring 9955 on and off Friday, BS was audible at 1921 without
jamming; at 0004 UT Saturday, R. Libertad, the main exile program is
still on this hour only, and somewhat audible despite jamming.

Now updated as a result are:

VIETNAM/PHILIPPINES 9920 UNIDENTIFIED. Listening to FEBC Manila (Iba)
this morning on 9920 kHz from 1325 to 1330 UT I was hearing what sounded
like a siren jammer mixed with their signal. When they signed off, the
jammer remained. I have no idea who would want to target FEBC or even
whether they were the target. I have two roughly ten second recordings of
the jammer. The first is on USB where it is spot on 9920 kHz USB; the
second is in the AM mode. Both were made after FEBC signed off and the
best AM tuning for the signal was on 9922 kHz. I have attached the two MP3
files. I have heard similar jammers used by DPR Korea but I am puzzled.
Any thoughts?
(Steve Handler-IL-USA, dxld Feb 17)

Steve, This 'siren' jamming has been going on for a long time against
certain FEBC broadcasts, this 9920 kHz one full of strange languages,
which I think you will find are Vietnam minority tongues, hill tribes?
E.g. in EiBi, one of them is BRU which per
<http://www.eibispace.de/dx/README.TXT>

is: "BRU Bru: Laos (70,000), Vietnam (55,000)"

Thus the jamming is surely by Vietnam which doesn't want the Christians
messing with their minorities. I brought it up when I met someone from
FEBC, and they were aware of it. I don't recall hearing this particular
kind of jamming from North Korea.
