CHINA Voice of Pujiang QSL. TX location midst in downtown Shanghai ?

I discussed that matter with Hungarian DXer Istvan Hegedues, who received
this V of Pujiang QSL and friendly letter last autumn too.

Yahoo maps, MS Virtual Earth, Google Earth imagery. Some high resolution
place. VE Update - Google Earth V.7 historical image.

Seems the SW site for V of Pujiang (Shanghai-Zhenru) is here:
31 16 47 N 121 23 26 E

{ or at 31 16 55.28 N  121 23 24.29 E also some masts visible ... wb.}

According to web sources, it's a utilities site also used for the three SW
transmitters used by V of Pujiang. Two frequencies are beamed roughly
south to Taiwan, and one more SW towards Hong Kong, which seems to fit
with the antennas visible on G.E. it looks like one small curtain or
dipole+reflector, and a couple of log-periodics.
(Alan Davies-INS, SW TXsite Dec 1, 2009)

5075 PJZS Voice of Pujiang, Shanghai, at 1520 UT Dec 26. // rather strong
on 3280 kHz, but much much weaker on // 4950 kHz. According Nagoya Aoki
list only 15 kW of power.

{Probably Shanghai-Taopuzhen" (utility site) at 24 53 46 N  118 48 17 E }
- but recent splendid QSL card of Shanghai skyline to Istvan Hegedues in
Hungary shows TX site as "Zhenru Town, Shanghai", a downtown location
"houses as far as the eye can see".

I guess meant for sailors and fishermen off the Shanghai coastline?

Re: [DXplorer] Voice of Pujiang, QSL 9705 kHz, F/D letter in 426 days for
$1.00 and local postcard. The station is now part of China Business News
Radio, apparantly no longer broadcasts on 9705 (3280, 4950, and 5075 kHz
are the present frequencies), and transmits from Zhenru Town in Shanghai.
(Ross Comeau - Andover-MA-USA, DXplorer March 1)

I also received a very nice separate letter from the v/s, which
illustrates why reception reports that we send out sometimes do or do not
get answered, and reads as follows:

"Dear Sir,
New Year's greetings from the Voice of Pujaing, Shanghai, P.R. China.

I must say sorry for the late reply of your valuable reception report. I
joined the station a half year ago. I was a SWLer and DXer in my senior
high school days. A few weeks ago, I found several letters that
accumulated at my colleague's desk, who didn't know how to reply. There
are reception reports with which I am very much familiar. So, I am very
happy take over the job to serve my fellow SWLers and DXers.

We welcome your further reports. For Email reception reports, send to this
Email address:
<victor.pujiang @ gmail.com>

I will confirm it with a QSL letter by email with full data. For reception
reports sent by regular mail with an IRC or a dollar, I will confirm it

CHINA/AUSTRALIA/U.K./USA China jamming broadcasts from BBC, VOA and
Radio Australia.

[so maybe it's temporary for the ChiCom succession gh]

"Censorship" campaign blocks BBC in China.
Ben Webster, Media Editor and Leo Lewis in Beijing.
Published on February 26, 2013 London The Times.

The BBC World Service has been blocked in China in what appears to be an
intensification of the Government's censorship campaign as it approaches
the climax of its once-a-decade transition of top Communist Party leaders.

The BBC is among several broadcasters affected by short-wave jamming, but
is the only one to have gone public. It identified some jamming of World
Service English frequencies in November but this month found that it had
intensified.

Three quarters of 134 frequencies in China checked on February 13 were
jammed. The "co-ordinated" effort made it likely that a well-resourced
country such as China was the source of signals, the BBC said.

Peter Horrocks, director of BBC Global News, said: "The jamming of
shortwave transmissions is being timed to cause maximum disruption to BBC
World Service English broadcasts in China. The deliberate and co-ordinated
efforts by authorities in countries such as China and Iran illustrate the
significance and importance of the role the BBC undertakes to provide
impartial and accurate information to audiences around the world."

The BBC said it was "working with UK authorities to identify the origin of
the jamming signals".

Chinese authorities have already blocked the websites of Bloomberg News
and The New York Times in China after they published stories that
embarrassed China's leaders. Other organisations, including The Wall
Street Journal, have recently said they have been victims of hacking, with
China as the prime suspect.

There are less than two weeks to go before the National People's Congress
formally installs Xi Jinping as the country's next President.

The 10-day parliament is a moment of critical importance for Beijing and
one which the authorities are anxious will pass without incident.

One of the key fears is the continuing campaign of self-immolations by
ethnic Tibetans protesting against rule by Beijing. The burnings passed a
grim milestone earlier this month with the 100th person to set themselves
on fire.

Despite its history of interference with foreign media, and blockage of
entire Western news websites within China, jamming of the BBC's English
service is unusual.

BBC sources said they were surprised because the World Service in English
has a low number of listeners within China. That suggests that Beijing's
drive is more broadly focused and may be targeting short-wave radio as a
means of communication between Tibetan groups outside China and protesters
inside the country.

In common with other broadcasters whose news services are shown in China,
BBC World is subject to regular interference - the notorious "black
screen" that descends whenever there is coverage of a topic that Beijing
deems too sensitive.

The most common triggers for the black screens are stories about Tibet,
anything that mentions or includes images of the Dalai Lama and news about
high-profile dissidents. Stories about pollution and poverty are allowed
to run, but significant instances of civil unrest and anything too
critical of the top Communist Party leadership are black screened.

The BBC has responded to interference in the past by winding down its
Chinese language website and Chinese language version of the World
Service. Both are understood to have been the targets of jamming or
internet blocking by Beijing.

The Chinese language version of the website was allowed to run freely
during the 2008 Beijing Olympics when the eyes of the world were on China
but after the athletes and the crowds left China, censorship began in
earnest.

BBC Persian transmissions in Iran have been jammed in recent years and
broadcasts during the political unrest in Egypt. The Soviet Union was
believed to have blocked BBC broadcasts during the Cold War.

The International Herald Tribune is to be rebranded as The International
New York Times. Mark Thompson, the former BBC Director-General who is now
chief executive of the New York Times Company, plans to turn The New York
Times into a global brand. The corporation strongly condemned the jamming,
saying it was designed to disrupt audiences' free access to news.

The new broad Chinese jamming is not DRM based, from what I have seen and
heard. It is something different entirely, seems to be focused at about 1
kHz audio frequency and contains some additional odd digital tone
patterns. Very noisy and odd indeed.

Interesting that they are now going after many different broadcasters and
English language services! It would appear they feel Firedrake and voice
broadcast over-modulated methods are no longer adequate.

Nothing noted this 13-15 UT afternoon slot of the new BBCWS English jammer
target by China mainland. Even in Hong Kong is the new 'BBWS' jamming not
very effective and not potent.

All BBC programs could easily be heard - undisturbed.

Listen to the MP4 audio files at 2300 UT or 0000 UT on BBG RMS at Beijing
or Hong Kong remote monitoring posts. I can HARDLY find any broadband
immense scratch jamming against BBC ... far not to compare to Firedrake or
WORD SPOKEN jamming by China against RFA, VOA Mandarin or BBC Uighur ...
in last decade.

Little scratch on 5980 and 7490 kHz, 30% jamming on 15755NAK, but not
disturbing. 15335 totally free in Hong Kong at 0010 UT Febr 28.

But FIREDRAKE music of CHN or WHITE NOISE digital from Ethiopia are both
20 kHz wide broadband, are much more effective.

Wolfy, Very strong jamming of BBCWS English was observed when I checked at
1815 UT via Hongkong rx. BBCWS English to S Asia on 5975 and 7600 kHz and
also BBCWS English to Mid East on 5875 and 5945 kHz were completely
obliterated by the new jamming noise in HKG at this time.

CHINA [non] Voice of Tibet 7557 / 7547 kHz at 1330-1400 UT.
Typical procedure from a few days of listening:

1330 VOT signing on on 7557 kHz, seems to be only in Chinese.
7557 kHz has a co-channel strong digital UTE.
1331 Buzzer jammer starting with center frequency on 7555 kHz.
1333 Firedrake jammer starting on 7555 kHz.
1342 VOT switching to 7547 kHz.
The switch is momentary, i.e. with no carrier break.
1344 Buzzer off 7555 kHz.
1345 Firedrake off 7555 kHz.
1347 Buzzer back, now on 7545 kHz.
1348 Firedrake back, now on 7545 kHz.
1400 all transmitters off within seconds.

All times area somewhat variable.

The Buzzer is a new type of jamming introduced by the Chinese a few months
ago and now becoming more widespread. The signal is DSB with no carrier
and the audio is of the squarewave type with maximum audio strength about
+/- 2.5 kHz from the suppressed carrier. Just as the buzzer starts it has
a second or two of only carrier.

I have no idea whether the buzzers are refitted voice/music jammers or are
a new generation specifically made for the purpose. Anyhow, they are
probably the result of the new harder line government that recently took
office. Apparently the Chinese transmitters are tunable only in 5 kHz
steps and the VOT people make use of this by using offset channels.

CHINA Firedrake roundup. Crash & Bang Chinese Opera Music Jammer, aka
Firedrake, aka Chinese Opera Music Jammer. From B12 (beginning 28-Oct-12)
posted logs (various sources); during the UTC hours noted.

All broadcasts originate from East Jammerstan. Transmissions will
typically change frequency and time often, as the jammer's target moves.

FRENCH GUIANA 9490 Feb 27 at 0057 UT, still no spurs detectable around
9374 or 9606 kHz from R. Republica. Nice of TDF to go ahead and repair
this considering that the GUF relay is to be abandoned at the end of B-12.

11740 Febr 27 at 0515 UT, NHK World R. Japan in English, usual very good
signal via GUF; David Crystal opening 'Radio Japan Focus' about robotix.
By 0526 UT usual music fill at end, and I notice that NHK Spanish via WHRI
6195 kHz is playing different music. Sometimes the feature program scripts
are the same, obviously both translated from same original Japanese, and
even the music fill.

Better enjoy this bigsig from NHK English while you can (and if you can
get it, the other GUF relay at 1200 UT on 15190 kHz), since in A-13, NHK
plans to *abandon North America* with no more broadcasts to here in
English or even Japanese. Various other relays will still be used to other
worldparts, but not GUF, which only WYFR wanted to employ for a few hours
to LAm, but that's not enough to keep it financially viable; so apparently
Montsinery is to follow in the footsteps of Sackville and Bonaire, be
closed down. NHK will still try to reach Latin America from France
instead.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 27)

Rumour: Closure of Montsinery-GUF.
See below. For now I call it a rumour since I have not heard otherwise of
such a development, instead heard that at the Wertachtal plant
preparations were under way to set up a remote control for both Issoudun
and Montsinery, as already in place for Nauen.

Btw, one of the two Wertachtal transmitter halls has been closed at the
end of the A12 season, instead of closing Nauen altogether. I understand
that hereby all 70s vintage transmitters have been withdrawn from service,
leaving only the S 4005 rigs originally installed there, the ones moved in
from Zeewolde ("Flevoland"), the S 4001 transmitters moved in from Juelich
and, I think, also the single RIZ transmitter that has, under a
"Telefunken S 4050" designator, been installed as prototype for a
modernization that never took plavce because, as well known, Deutsche
Welle instead terminated its use of the site at yearend 2006.

"Hello All, Please consider the following as a non-official information.
As far as I know:

- G3 DRM transmitter is currently out of order with lack of spare parts,

- Montsinery SW transmitting station is supposed to close down by the end

Re: Mighty KBC 7375 kHz no show.
It's indeed the antenna featured on this stamp
<http://www.jans-radioseiten.de/rbi/rbi1970.jpg>

However, it is not the original East Berlin made (not Russian made, this
applied to Koenigs Wusterhausen SW site, shut down in 1993, and two of the
three original 500 kW rigs at Nauen, shut down in 1997) transmitter. It
has finally been closed and scrapped in 2000 after being used up until
then by both DW and RNW.

Instead it's now a West Berlin made transmitter by TELEFUNKEN from the
eighties, in 2006 moved in from DTK Juelich site to revive this antenna
because it would have been a shame to let it rust away. This way the
transmitter of course escaped the decline of the complete Juelich SW
station.

4850 AIR Kohima recently has been doing something unusual. Has been
broadcasting daily instead of their former erratic transmissions. Also
they currently have an extended schedule running well past their normal
1400 UT sign off time. This is to provide political coverage for the run-
up to the Feb 23 elections for the Nagaland Assembly.

Heard on 4850 kHz here in Calif. on Feb 15 from 1335 to 1450 UT tune out.
Normal program format till 1402 UT; then political talks and speeches in
English addressing "the people of Nagaland" and talking about issues
dealing with the "Northeast region"; easy listening filler music between
speakers; frequent "This is All India Radio Kohima" IDs; poor due to yet
another day of persistent OTH radar and some light PBS Xinjiang QRM. My
local sunrise was at 1455 UT.

4850, AIR Kohima heard Feb 13 after 1400 UT with EZL filler music between
series of speeches; poor due to strong OTH radar. Perhaps they will
actually, for a while, be on daily?

JAPAN 9760 Febr 28 at 0639 UT, YL songs in Japanese, 0655 UT YL
announcement in Japanese so is it an all-YL show? Then more pop music by
YLs. R. Nikkei 2 here is the SSOB, as most other signals except Brazilians
are attenuated. I had been noticing JOZ7 the last few nights with
unusually good signal, and strangely stronger than JOZ3 on 9595 kHz, R.
Nikkei 1, tho both are supposed to be 50 kW and of course from same Chiba-
Nagara site.

However, Aoki shows a slight difference in azimuth, 64 degrees on 9595 and
50 degrees on 9760 kHz, which is not enough to account for the disparity.
NHK registers these frequencies at each HFCC on behalf of "NSB" as it
still appears, showing both with antenna type 701, and with duplicate
24-hour availability in the opposite direxions, 244 and 230 degrees,
which would be sensible to cover down as well as up the island chain

KOREAS JAMMING from KRE / CHN.
Nothing noted this 13-15 UT afternoon of the new BBCWS En jammer target by
China mainland.

All BBC programs could easily be heard - undisturbed.

Despite heard some North Korean jammer stations in 49 mb on remote SDR
units in Japan and Australia.

Broadband KRE jamming on 5848-5919 kHz
against VOA Tinian Korean service at 12-15 UT on center 5890 kHz.

Broadband KRE jamming on 5992-6025 kHz
against BOTH, Radio Echo of Hope KOR 6003 kHz, and KBS on 6015 kHz.

Broadband KRE jamming on 6041-6063 kHz
24hrs KRE NoKorean jamming on center 6060 kHz,
much stronger on lower sideband side.

1300 Hertz mis-calibration ... low voltage in Pyongyang-KRE ?

6101.275 My guess is a mainpower net failure at Pyongyang around
14-15 UT, noted very ODD frequency of KCBS in Korean at S=9+5dB level
in Nagoya-JPN of 6101.275 kHz, likely NOT Kanggye, but rather
from Pyongyang TX site.

All other Kanggye outlets in various meter bands were rather even or
nearby exact frequencies today.

KOREA D.P.R. NORTH Some of the Kujang transmitters are having a
crosstalk problem. On 7570/12015 kHz a second audio signal and a jamming
signal are heard in the background. The same problem seems to affect two
other transmitters, which have the audio of the first two in the
background and whose audio is the background audio of the first two.

The jamming signal is synchronous with the 6349/6360/6480 kHz group of
jammers. These seven transmitters thus must have something in common, like
a shared transmitter hall or antenna field.
(Olle Alm-SWE, 4 March; via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews)

KOREA D.P.R. NORTH Fixed frequency jammers. From mid December I have
noted three fixed frequency jammers on 6060, 6360 and 6480 kHz. During mid
winter propagation they could be heard in continuous operation from before
0800 until past 2300 UT. During this time they did jam something only for
a few odd hours, the rest being wasted output.

Instead MND transmitters on 5150 and 6550 kHz were free of high power
jamming.

heard it Feb 24 until 1159:40* UT. Perhaps there is a margin of error. I

MONGOLIA Voice of Mongolia Video.
A few months ago I videoed the Voice of Mongolia shortwave antenna farm at
Khonhor, a town 30 km to the south east of Ulan Bator. The video was taken
while traveling on the train from Beijing, a 30 hour journey. The railway
loops around the transmitter site, almost completing a full circle. The
video includes a close up pass of the antennas, passing through the
Khonhor township and then the railway once again loops to show a final
view of the antennas with the town in the foreground. Recorded around 1PM
Ulan Bator time on Thursday October 4th 2012.

vernichtete deren gesamte technische Ausruestung.

RUSSIA The "buzzer", 4625 kHz.

This one is again producing spurs on the higher side. This has happened
several times before, so the transmitter probably has served its useful
life. The signal of the buzzer is USB plus carrier, the carrier sometimes
being reduced.

Today it emits about 20 buzzes per minute. Years ago it was 59 bpm. In
yesterday's short buzzes the basic audio frequency was increased slightly
during each buzz, like so called chirp radar. In today's longer buzzes the
basic audio frequency varies slightly up and down with three or four such
periods in each buzz. A few months ago there was a period when the pitch
was much higher than what we normally hear. I do not know if this was
intentional or caused by a faulty feeder circuit. I happened to be tuned
in when the pitch was all of a sudden turned back to normal. The audio
from time to time contains crackling reminding of an old time telephone
line.

RUSSIA/AUSTRALIA 21800 - Seemingly - the powerful Voice of Russia
foreign service station Irkutsk of 21800 kHz produces some SPURIOUS
radiations in range 21169 to 22353.3 kHz.

Scheduled 0600-1000z on 21800 Irkutsk which is
S=9+20dB strongest of the three Russian outlets in downunder Brisbane,
21820 kHz Novosibirsk Oyash;
and also 21840 kHz at 0700-0900z from Novosibirsk Oyash.

Spurious signals noted at very sensitive remote SDR unit in Brisbane
Australia owned by Neil,
<nedz @ davsoft.com.au>
but could also be a bad mixture on the antenna unit amplifier like ghost
signals in Australia.

There are almost all local remote Perseus units contain noise siggnals.
Someone had contact with Brisbane. There is a buzzing adjacent plasma TV
in-device. This structure of local intruder signals only seen at higher
resolution, for example on Wavecom unit sonogram.

On 21169.5 21317 21465.5 21613 21761.5 kHz
and on upper flank on 22057 22205.5 22353.5 kHz.

"... Avec les SDR que nous avons, le plus agreable a utiliser reste le
Perseus, (!!) c'est mon prefere, mais attention a l'intermodulation avec
antenne logper!

Attenuation 20 a 30 dB necessaire...."!

"With SDRs that we have, the most pleasant to use is the Perseus (!). Is
my favorite, but attention intermodulation with antenna LogPer!

20 to 30 dB attenuation required .... "!

zuzuschalten. Wenn die Summenspannung einer Breitbandantenne zu gross
wird, ist Intermodulation kaum zu vermeiden. Will man das eliminieren,

All India Radio

01.25-03.00 (So 05.00): 6005 9770 (10 kW) 15745 (35 kW) kHz englisches
Programm fuer Asien.
09.30-12.15: 6005 (10 kW) 11905 (35 kW) fuer Suedindien in dortigen
Lokalsprachen.

(Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK 12.2.2013 dxld, Kai Ludwig; ntt March 1)

SRI LANKA This historic station which started at Ekala with the wartime
South East Asia Command Radio (SEAC) is now on its last legs. Out of the
three VOA 35 kW transmitters only two are working, the NHK transmitters
are both still in good conditions, but for spares and they are too
expensive to repair and run. The old 10 kW Phillips transmitters are
almost gone. The old Marconi 100 kW from Radio SEAC is rusty and with
cobwebs and is gone for ever.

The final nail in its cofin came, when DW packed up from Trincomalee
handing over the station to SLBC. Trincomalee is a fine station and the MW
transmitter is also capable of DRM and it did run DRM 1700-1800 UT for DW
for a while. The four SW transmitters at Trincomalee need to run at least
45 hours to make it viable to use the hige Diesel Generators which need
about a $1000 a day to run and maintain. Ekala is on prime land close to
the city and it is quite logical to close it down taking the state of the
station.

So if you want a QSL from SLBC Ekala, you will have to do so, before Apr
01, as plans are afoot to close down Ekala, if the Trinco station gets the
power from the National Grid as planned before the end of the B12 season.
During the 30 year war with the Tamil Tigers it was not possible to take
the national grid power lines, as this area was in the front lines. DW had
tacit agreements therun without interference from the LTTE. But now the
North and East, which have been freed, are making rapid progress and
electricty is reaching most parts.

Ekala schedule as of now:

0012-0330 7190(10kW) / 11905(35kW) Hindi to Asia, English news at 0215 UT.

0125-0300 (Sun 0500) 6005 (10kW) / 9770 (10kW) / 15745 (35kW)
          English to Asia.

0930-1215 6005(10kW) / 11905(35kW) Vernaculars to South India.

I will get you your QSLs, like I have in the past 10 months or so. The
SLBC's above services will move to Trincomalee in A-13 and the relays
from Trincomalee for other clients will continue.
(Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK, in DXplorer, Febr 12 via dswci DXW)

Regarding Ekala closure, - still the final decision hasn't been taken as
of today as the rains have delayed the connection of the national power
grid electricity main power lines to the Trinco station.

I am planning a special QSL card for a final broadcast week and a special
good bye Ekala broadcast. I think Adrian is also doing a special AWR
Wavescan program.

VIETNAM [and non] 11605, on Febr 23 at 1353 UT, good open carrier,
already with whoop-whoop siren jamming, both sides warming up for RFA's
Vietnamese hour at 1400 UT via TAIWAN. Altho annoying, this kind of
jamming doesn't really block the offensive signals as heard here; how bad
is it inside Vietnam? Are these sirens intended for groundwave around a
city or cities? It's 708 miles or 1140 km between Hanoi and Saigon, so the
north and south could jam each other effectively at a good skip distance
on 25mb. However, we never hear more than one siren transmitter at a time.
