GERMANY QSL 990 kHz DLR {former RIAS Berlin} Berlin Britz on mediumwave
- very last DAY 4 Sept 2013 !

4. September draeut. (oder 3.9. letzter Tag ?)

ANTARCTIC/ARGENTINA LRA36 15476, 1927 UT Aug 22. Eben noch Gesang mit
weiblicher Stimme, Jetzt spricht eine Dame in Spanisch. O=2-3.

Hab jetzt mal meinen Perseus online gestellt. Empfang am besten mit
Preselector off. Preamplifier on, SAM mit ca. 4,3 kHz BB. Passband relativ
weit nach LSB verschoben. ... ich wuerde die AGC anlassen.
(Clemens Paul-D DL4RAJ, A-DX Aug 22)

Gallener remote Perseus mitgehoert. Um 19.40 UT Aug 22. Im Juli war das
Signal staerker.

Bodensee. Hart an der Grasnarbe - Threshold level.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 22)

ARGENTINA RAE Buenos Aires Japanese service 1100-1200 UT on odd
15343.991 kHz noted on fair signal level at 1145 UT Aug 19. One of my
favorite music programes, observed mostly via remote SDR units in Japan,
Australia or California.

6160v, August 16 at 0058 UT, fair signal in English, 0059 "CBC News is
next". Certainly CKZN at this hour before CKZU would be propagating, and
CUBA 6165 hasn't come on quite yet; but it is on and splashing by 0105
when CKZN probably aired local weather.

6160 was of especial interest, since we had just received word from Dan
Say (and later from Ricky Leong; also Dan Sys via Andy Reid), of a CRTC
announcement that an application from CBC to close down several
rebroadcasting transmitters (LPRTs) also mentioning CKZU Vancouver, had
been granted August 15!

Walt Salmaniw, Victoria BC, replied: "Well, I'm listening to them
right now on 6160 // 690 CBU, 0308 UT" August 16.

I, gh, checked again at 1209 UT, when CKZU would be propagating rather
than CKZN, and found only a JBA carrier on 6160 kHz, something else?

Walt replies again: "Very poorly heard this morning at 1417 UT // 690 kHz.
Perhaps very low power, or propagation not allowing" Aug 16.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 21)

6160 is at what I would consider normal (good) strength here (near
Edmonton, approx. 900 km away), mid afternoon local, 2051 UT Aug 16.
73 (Don VE6JY Moman, ibid.)

Excellent reception at 0059 UT 17 Aug. Absolutely right about the nothing
cost. It does provide excellent reception in northern BC, especially
between towns where there's no FM coverage. I for one, will miss it,
though I don't really need it! Too bad they never have local IDs. Sure
would like to know exactly when they pull the plug.
(Walt Salmaniw-BC-CAN, dxld Aug 21)

Re: CKZU is closing "spends more for their coffee service."

Similar low cost sector stated on Deutsche Welle budget during closure
time at relay centers Sines Portugal and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. Only 8%
of the budget related to the technical engineering department worldwide on
SW, FM, TV and web procedures, but 37% were high expenses for salaries and
pensions of the staff from the last 2 decades in DWL's glorious reputation
era. 73 wb
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 18)

6160v August 28 at 0517 UT, Marco Werman's familiar voice on 'The World',
strumming music break. (ACI from 6165 kHz Cuba not so bad during Arnie
Coro's deliberately degraded voice lacking highs as he presents an
editorial "Viewpoint" on behalf of Castro & Castro.) 0518 UT PRI ID, so
usual CKZN Newfoundland timing for this US radio program via CBC Radio
One.

I am still not hearing CKZU Vancouver also on 6160 kHz, but closer
monitors such as Ron Howard in CA confirm it's still on, at least
sporadically, and via Dan Say, we now have word that its closure was all a
CBC HQ mistake by including it on a list of LPRTs to be deleted, moving
from AM to FM, or already off.

4920 and also 6130 kHz (and surely others). So you can listen to a clear
signal from Lao National Radio on 6129.972 kHz in the late evening around
22 UT! Must check the next days also before 16 UT. Last winter Lao was
only few times audible "behind" Lhasa. /TN.

No audio for pure DREAM decoding software heard yet.
The ship's crew to be connected via a single hour DRM contact daily, with
their families at home. Probably, this was done by the Fraunhofer
Institute, has changed the encoding / decoding for this purpose, compared
to pure DRM dream decoding ...

GERMANY I'm receiving a station on 11650, Radio Andernach, that's not
listed in the "official" DRM schedule. Near as I can tell, Radio Andernach
is the station of the German army. I'm not getting any audio; the S/N
ratio is only about 10-11 dB, not rising to the level required for
audibility, but the ID is coming through in Dream. I don't see anything on
the Radio Andernach web site at
<http://www.radio-andernach.bundeswehr.de/>
about shortwave broadcasts via DRM. Anyone know anything about this?

Radio Andernach in DRM.
I actually did find something about this on a separate site, linked from
their news page. Appears to be two hours a day, aimed at the frigate
Niedersachsen, currently patrolling off the shore of Somalia.

Re Radio Andernach in DRM.
Ralph, you're not alone ... SNR is 19-21 dB here in central UKR, such
level must ensure perfect audio, alas, no audio here too absolutely "empty
feed" I'd say. They' re probably testing and seemingly have a problem
there, not sure if they're aware.

"Berus.

183 kHz longwave. Another Felsberg mast detonated.

In print the local newspaper also provided three photos:
<http://radioforum.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?8773,1045822,1079332#msg-1079332>

The stump of the broken Felsberg mast has been detonated yesterday, it has
been reported at
<http://www.saarbruecker-zeitung.de/sz-berichte/dillingen/Berus-Felsberg-
Sendemast-Sprengung;art2809,4518134>

No further details available, including the question if any future use
will be made of the three remaining masts at all.

On 13 June another mast of the Felsberg main antenna has been detonated
without prior announcements. Pictures:

This press report
<http://www.saarbruecker-zeitung.de/aufmacher/saarland-
ticker/saarlouis/Berus-Sendemast-Europa-1;art239502,4820341>

quotes the operator mentioning a "rebuilding". Seems they want to
configurate the two remaining masts as radiator and reflector to use them
again to transmit 183 kHz.
(Kai Ludwig-D, mwmasts June 13/30)

What is widely described as "omnidirectional mast" is a pair of two masts,
apparently a classic radiator-reflector combination. To the left in this
picture from 2008, with the main antenna to the right:
<http://www.radioeins.de/etc/medialib/rbb/rad/programm/medienmagazin/f/026.file.jpg>

Now the question is which of the remaining three masts of the main antenna
has been removed in June. It was understood that they did this in such a
way that a two mast set-up can be configurated, since unspecified
"modifications" have been given as reason for unexpectedly blowing up
another, intact mast. Any further information is still missing, I have so
far also not seen a photo of the current situation.

Anyway at my location 183 kHz is still weaker than Allouis on 162 kHz, so
it is certainly not omnidirectional. There is a gain reduction, but it is,
unsurprisingly of course, not the sharp one specified in GE75 (more than
20 dB, almost 30 dB if I recall correct, are required).

People who loosely follow French industry circles say that Lagardere does
not intend to further invest into its longwave outlet, instead to close it
down no later than 2016. Further background remains behind the language
barrier.
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Aug 14)

<http://www.bing.com/maps/>
angesehen?

Beim zweitnoerdlichsten Mast: "Destroyed 08/08/2012"

Ausblendung Richtung Oranienburg ausfaellt, muesste man mal herleiten.
0,64 x lambda.

GREECE Greek public TV - EDT is the new public TV organization.

From BBC Foreign desk 14:00 today 21 Aug:
In Greece, public television has resumed transmission, more than two
months after the government abruptly shut down the previous state channel.
The first show aired by the new broadcaster, EDT, was a two-hour morning
news programme presented by staff formerly employed by its predecessor.
More than five-hundred people have been hired on short-term contracts but
two-thousand-seven hundred staff from the former channel have been made
redundant. The move caused a political crisis, with a left-wing party
withdrawing from the coalition government.

(The sacked journalists continued broadcasting via internet until the
European Broadcasting Union stopped the relays, expressing confidence that
the new broadcaster will be functional.)

GREECE Re: Voice of Greece on two frequencies today.
I was worried, too that they were gone for good. I just checked here, in
St. John's, Newfoundland, at 1430 NDT (UT 1700) and there is a good clean
and strong signal on 15650 kHz, music before the UTC hour and news (or
speech anyway) after. Nothing noticeable from ERT on 15630 and 9420 kHz.
I'm glad the ERT sw service is still there.

Die Loesung via MWC FB Seite:
"After a report by Fausto Fontana in the Associazione Italiana
Radioascolto's FB page, I'm hearing a new Italian indipendent station on
1233 kHz. It broadcasts non-stop Italian music and IDs as "Radio Azzurra"
(it means "pale blue radio"). According to Fausto it transmits from region
Tuscany and indeed this is consistent with my observations, because with
my ALA1530 loop I can easily separate Radio Azzurra (coming from West)
from co-channel Media Veneta Broadcast (coming from North). Both stations
are daytimers at S7 level in my location in Forli, northern Italy."

KYRGYZSTAN 4795 Program 1 heard via Perseus site in CeGermany on Aug 5
from 0007 UT tune with Kyrgyz vocal then nonstop what sounded at first
blush like LA vocals. Gradual improvement from S2 to S3, peaking 0045-0100
UT. SINPO 34333 with periodic, short-term ute QRM (pulsed signal of some
type), a background hum and typical summer static. Signal then faded after
0100 UT back to S2. I was convinced that this was not Kyrgyz R. also
listed here at same time frame, because of the apparent LA music. However,
at 0055 UT there was finally a man and then woman in unknown language to
0056 UT, but not Spanish. This was followed by instrumental music that
sounded more CeAsian, then woman announcer at 0101 until tune out at 0107
UT (mixed with background music until 0102 UT). Fading pattern supports
Kyrgyz R. passing through gray line. This would be Bishkek's 15 kW
transmitter, thus the relatively weak signals, even in CeGermany.

Their disappearance, strangely enough, seems to have passed unnoticed, or
unreported at least. I can vaguely remember Alexandr Egorov's message
posted to the open_dx mailing list in early July, regarding their absence
on MW 999 kHz for two or three consecutive mornings.

Anyway, the reasons - tremendous last/this year's amounts due and payable
to PRTTs (Pridnestrovskiy Radioteletsentr) now owned by the Russian RTRS.
The irony is that Radio PMR, after last year's merger with TV PMR that
resulted in a new entity named PGTRK (Pridnestrovskaya Gosudarstvennaya
Teleradiokompaniya), currently undergoes modernization, restructuring,
retrofitting and rebranding (their home channel got a new look and feel,
being renamed to Radio 1 even though they traditionally ID themselves as
"Radio Pridnestrovya", still - perhaps mechanically), and will reportedly
have a new (or heavily redesigned) website. Furthermore, as you might have
noticed, they got a new postal address - 5 Khristoforova lane, where their
(both radio and TV) HQ are housed (sharing the building with the Russian
diplomatic mission). Interestingly, some three years ago PMR's then
president Igor Smirnov was promising a new building for radio and TV,
located at now long defunct canning factory built in the 30s, I believe,
now lying in ruins. Krhristoforova 5 verges on that long- abandoned
factory, so Smirnov's promise came true, after his dethronement, though.

Evgeniy Zubov, the head of Pridnestrovian Service of communications,
information and mass media, has recently been dismissed.

So what's the irony? Reorganization implies investments, or lack of
thereof in our case, LOL, when Radio PMR is reorganized at Mayak's
expense. Backlog of debts, however, cannot grow indefinitely, as we can
see, regardless of state guarantee.

Not sure why they count on resuming SW transmissions next year. Unless
those large arrearages are remitted by the Russians. Time will show.

RUSSIA State radio "Voice of Russia" with the January 1, 2014 will stop
broadcasting its programs in the shortwave (SW) band "due to the decrease
in funding."

Voice of Russia Moscow, Aug_21 - Digit_ru. State radio "Voice of Russia"
with the January 1, 2014 will stop broadcasting its programs in the short-
wave (HF) range, according to a letter from the Deputy Chairman of the
"Voice of Russia" Natalia Zhmay to the head of the company "Russian
Television and Radio Broadcasting Network" (RTRS) Andrew Romanchenko.

In a letter to "Voice of Russia" on 15 August indicated that broadcasting
in the HF band stops "due to the decrease in funding."

At present, the "Voice of Russia" uses RTRS transmitters for broadcasting
to foreign countries in the medium (DM) and short waves. After the
cessation of work on short wave broadcasting "Voice Rosii" to foreign
countries from the Russian territory will be carried out, according to a
source Digit.ru in the industry, with only three low-power medium-wave
transmitters located in Transnistria, in Sakhalin and Kaliningrad.

The bulk of broadcast will focus on the FM-band transmitters located in
foreign countries. Thus, broadcasting "Voice of Russia" from the territory
of Russia is almost completely stopped.

"Voice of Russia" also notified RTRS that it would continue to relay
transmitters in the NE and SW bands transmission of foreign radio stations
on the basis of contracts with them. Digit.ru source said that among them,
such as the "Voice of America", "Vatican Radio" and others.

Previously, since the beginning of 2013 "Voice of Russia" has reduced the
total amount of broadcasting short wave up to about 26 hours a day,
compared to more than 50 hours in 2012. Thus payment services RTRS "Voice
of Russia" in 2013 due to the reduction of broadcasting decreased to 220
million rubles, compared with 550 million rubles in 2012.

In the "Voice of Russia" and RTRS not comment on the situation.

DRM Receiver Chengdu DR111 / Tecsun PL-660.

Keith Perron writes on FB: Just heard from a source that Chengdu Newstar
Electronics will discontinue the DR111 DRM receiver. Sales for the radio
have been so poor that in the last 12 months less than 50 have been sold.
(Mike Terry-UK, rDXC-UK ng Aug 19)

DRM receiver discontinued...
Also from Keith Perron on FB: "There is no release date yet. But Tecsun is
working on a new SW radio that will be DRM. I have only been shown photos
of the 1 sample model they made, but it is still in R&D so I can not
release them. The issue they are working on is battery life."

If Tecsun can add a DRM module to a PL-660 and put it on the market at a
decent price, they may have a winner.

I have a DR-111 and excepting maybe for the DRM part (which works fine),
they did almost everything else wrong. The DR-111 didn't fail because DRM
is dead. It failed because it was a bad radio sold at a high price.
