BULGARIA [to Eritrea] 15245 New Eritrean clandestine via Sofia
Kostinbrod Bulgaria. I should have mentioned that the station announcement
in Tigrinya is "Ezi Dmtsi Medrekh Ertrawian Eyu" ("This is the Voice of
the Forum of Eritreans").

Voice of the Forum of Eritreans began broadcasting on 15 October. It is on
the air at 1700-1800 UT (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays) on
15245 kHz. It is run by the National Dialogue Forum for Eritreans.

Pick your variant of the translated name - Voice of Forum, Voice of the
Forum, of Eritreans, for Eritreans, etc.

Note 1: Radio Assenna is on 15245 kHz from Kostinbrod at 1700 UT on the
other days of the week.

Note 2: I spell it Assenna rather than Assena or Asena as that it what
they use on their website <http://assenna.com/>
(Chris Greenway-UK, dxld Oct 17)

This new clandestine observed in progress with Tigrinya programming on
15245 kHz at 1720 UT, with good reception via Global Tuners remote rx in
Odenwald, Germany. No ID was noted, but their incidental music was the
same as in these recordings of the first two broadcasts:

COSTA RICA More bad news out of Europe (You may have already heard this
by now). There will be no more REE transmissions from the Cariari site
starting on October 28. A real blow to all North and South American
listeners. Here is the link to the statement that was posted today in
Spanish on RTVE.es; below is my translation.

<http://www.rtve.es/radio/20131014/loteria-navidad-radio-exterior/764480.shtml>

"On October 28, Radio Exterior de Espana will permanently end its
shortwave transmissions from its relay station in Cariari, Costa Rica. At
the same time, from that date, broadcasts from its transmitters in
Noblejas, Spain will be considerably expanded.

These changes will affect those listeners in Central America, North
America and the northern part of South America's Southern Cone who tune
us.

In the coming days, we will post on our webpage and announce on our
programs our new frequencies and times in which you can hear Radio
Exterior de Espana."
(Marty Delfin, Madrid-ESP, dxld Oct 15)

REE EMISSION ENDS IN SHORT WAVE FROM DOWNTOWN CARIARI.

From next Oct 28, 2013 Radio Exterior de Espana definitive character
suspended with its shortwave broadcasts from the broadcast center of
Cariari, Costa Rica. In parallel, increased significantly from the same
date shortwave emissions from Noblejas broadcasting center in Spain.

These changes affect listeners who tune us from Central America, North
America and northern South American cone. In coming days, through our
programming and our website, we will inform you of new frequencies and
schedules with those who will be able to continue listening to Radio
Exterior de Espana.

I'm guessing that with the financial woes of the Spanish government, it
was a choice between closing Cariari or making major cuts to overall
output, and the relay station lost. Wonder if anyone is interested in
purchasing the Cariari facility? Doubtful, considering the demise of other
Western Hemishere sites in the past decade. Will anything be left on SW
from Cental America other than Radio Verdad? Haven't checked for the two
Hondurans recently.

COSTA RICA REE TXions from Cariari relay site, Canton de Pococi, to end
this Saturday Oct 26.

Do any of our Spanish members have close contact with REE? Would love to
see some pictures of the Cariari SW transmitter site before it closes or
is demolished. Also, not firmly established are the Google Earth
coordinates of this shortwave transmitter site. Anyone who can procure any
material to preserve our memories of this SW transmitter site would be
much appreciated.

<http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/15011628/964932679/name/REE-Costa%20Rica.pdf>

Regarding Cariari, I was lucky to QSL them direct in 2002, and they sent
me an oversize folder about the station, which I am sending along as an
attachment. The Spanish isn't too hard, and there are a couple of nice
pictures and a map. Tnx to John Herkimer for putting it into a reasonable-
size PDF.

CUBA 4765 on Oct 9 at 0113 UT, new R. Progreso SW relay has quickly
become just another nuisance from Castro & Castro. It's mostly music, but
lo-fi, sounds like ABBA at the moment. Wolfgang Bueschel compared it to
Rebelde 5025 and RHC 5040 via remote SDR in Miami 48 hours earlier, and
concluded that 4765 is only 8-9 kHz wide and with dropouts lasting about
1/10 of a second; 5025 kHz is 18 kHz wide, much better for music; 5040 kHz
is 10-13 kHz wide.

Arnie Coro had asked Rich D'Angelo for an mp3 of 4765 kHz off the air so
the CE could listen to it; also gave details of the system: it's a 48-
year-old Ukrainian-built Snieg'50, air-cooled 50 kW, plate-modulated "in
pristine condition"! Antenna a Nadenenko-type broadband dipole with "very
nice horizontal and nice vertical radiation patterns". He also suggests it
start earlier at 2300 UT to include a major newscast.

Terry Krueger in Florida says, "They should just run this 24hrs/7d. Some
of the daytime Progreso is boring (radio novelas) but when in music mode,
the network is mostly very good".

ETHIOPIA Since 30 September Radio Ethiopia and Voice of Demokrasi are
not on the air in range 9560-9570 kHz at 0355-0433 UT and 1155-1802 UT.

ETHIOPIA/CHINA 7235.955 Oct 20 afternoon at 1430 UT scheduled R
Ethiopia in Arabic via Addis Ababa-Gedja, poor S=4-5 signal, usual
20 Hertz up and down wandering, very unstable transmitter traced lately

Hit heavily by 950 Hertz interference whistle tone. On even 7235 kHz
nearby CRI Chinese service from older Kashar sw center with 100 kW only.

Not on air // R ETH in 9565v kHz range in past weeks.

GERMANY 6070, Channel 292, Rohrbach. At the moment we are on air with
the control transmitter and 1200 Watts. After German R Northsea Int. was
transmitted at the weekend, now we are playing some music. The conditions
on 49m are excellent, at night we receive reports from the east coast of
America (up to now from New York and Georgia).

In the works are: Stand-by-transmitter with 2500 Watts, Solid-state,
Linear amp. The 9 kW power supply (50 Volts, 170 A) is already prepared, a
little reserve in the power supply is never harmful for linear amps. The
transmitter is in the works. Main transmitter with xx? Watts. We are in
the proceedings, we hope it will work until middle of December. The
existing antenna should be okay for 20 kW, but a new coax wire and balun
are required. The wire is already here, the balun finished, but not yet
tested. When the time has come, we will be off air for some time. The
name Radio_6150 is of course not appropriate for 6070 kHz, anyhow it was
only for testing purposes.

The whole project will be named Channel 292, maybe some still have an old
QSL.

The new web page is
<www.channel292.de>
The new E-Mail is <info @ channel292.de>

The existing website will be changed bit by bit, but it is still
accessible just like the old mail address.

One appeal: When you listen to our station, please send us a short
assessment of the modulation quality, especially:

Frequency range (bass/treble present?), Volume (especially compared to
other 49m stations); Your total opinion of the modulation. In the morning
from ca. 0500 to 0700 UT the signal can usually be received very strong
and undisturbed.

Schedule: *0000 to 2400 UT: The History of Offshore Radio. Historic On-
Air-Recordings of R Northsea International, R Caroline, R Atlantis ...*?.
(R 6150, Oct 14)
Their beautiful QSL-card on 6070 kHz was received on Oct 11 after ten
months.
(Anker Petersen-DEN, dswci DXW Oct 16)

The MV Baltic Radio Relay service hopes to return to the air between
Oct 20 and 27, 2013. New aerial towers are being installed at the
Goehren transmitting site in Germany.

ODD wandering frequency from Zahedan site. // 15570.0 Sirjan site.

12080.0 on Oct 13 at 0119 UT, Qur'an, fair-good with flutter, so IRIB is
back on-frequency, in the same 1620-0520 UT transmission I logged Oct 11
at 2017 on 12081.5 kHz, listed as Zahedan site.

Meanwhile, Wolfgang Bueschel had notified IRIB of his logs of the other
15150-off frequency transmission and forwarded my log, so this may have
caused it to be fixed.

12080.0 kHz on Oct 15 at 0105 UT, very poor, flutter in Arabic: IRIB's
Zahedan transmitter is back in whack today instead of a sesquikilohertz
high - perhaps they only do that on alternate days.

everything is OKAY by now again. (SW IRIB SW-Design Office, Oct 14)

This 15150/11985/12080 kHz TX unit is now back on even frequency, noted
Oct 20 at 1510 UT. Scheduled Azeri service at 1423-1650 UT daily.

ITALY IRRS Nexus Milano SW shortwave TX site discussion.

[bclnews.it] Ancora su IRRS:
IL CATASTO degli IMPIANTI dice da dove trasmetteva!

As you can see in the photo of the article, the antenna was on the roof of
the central building smaller and I do not think has ever been moved, it
can be defined as the exact location.

Hello to all. A couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone knew the site exact
from which transmitted IRRS / NEXUS shortwave.

What intrigued me because it was written on the site that transmitted
MILAN, my area and I was curious to see the antennas, as there are not
many broadcasters on shortwave in the national territory ...

I have found that for the Lombardy region,
ARPA (Regional Agency for Environmental Protection Agency) manages the
REGISTER OF FACILITIES FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS and that the data are
available for most of the network (!)

<http://castel.arpalombardia.it/castel/>

I do not know if it applies to your province / region but the thing is
very interesting because they are plotted on a map the location
of all repeaters for telephone, radio repeaters, TV and bridges
individuals in the area of competence ...

Asking a REPORT on the site for the area it is even possible to know whom
they belong.

The data are accessible to all and without registration (!)

The thing I was very curious and I consulted the database in common
adjacent to mine, and I randomly found that

NEXUS IRRS SHORTWAVE is piled ROBECCO SUL NAVIGLIO
at the FARM Vaiana. Just the answer to my question.
It so happens that even a few miles from my home.
From Google street not seen antennas ... probably would not have more ...

But given that the location is near, I'm going to look around on the first
lap of person.

[later] I believe that in Cassano d'Adda, there was the FM transmitter
only, while the HF tx is likely to it was in Robecco sul Naviglio because
in the article, where he talks about the ideal site, it is indicated the
west area of Milan (where there is precisely Robecco), while Cassano is in
the east of Milan.

Here a picture of Cascina Vaiana farm in Robecco sul Naviglio right now:
you can see the same construction on Jan 3 page of the article.

Interesting detail occured in Italian newsgroup.

I remember. Re IRRS Milano site. A farm house complex area were used in
the 90ties, foto images were visible on a Italian DX magazine or AWR DX
newsletter?, a decade ago or so. Maybe Alfredo Cotroneo of IRRS can tell
you the exact former location of the farm house ...

Yes, the same admiration for the EXACT location I have for many years. We
try to determine the exact locations worldwide for yahoogroup SW TXsite.

So my heartfelt thanks for your explanation for concerning the two
location Cassano d'Adda, east of Milano, and Shortwave "Robecco sul

Wolfgang sent me 2 old articles (taken from MONITORING TIMES January and
February 2003) with some old pictures of the radio station.

So, this morning I've been there for a small tour in motorbike (the site
is 15minutes far from my home) and I have taken some new photos.

Hereby you can find a small photo-reportage (sorry for dimensions of
files).

I was right and it was exciting to know that a piece of history of
shortwave radio proudly happened close to my town.

Thanks again. 73 de IW2MXP Caliendo Domenico.

I posted the coordinates several months ago (July 2013 in fact) to both
SWSites YG & DXLD via the 10th anniversary 3 part article on IRRS I did in
cooperation with Bob Zanotti-SUI. It was through Bob, via my direct
questioning that I discovered the correct SW TXer site of the former IRRS
of that era.

Part 3, page 1 I show the dipole location - exactly (Ian).
On page 2 I give the coordinates - exactly.

I'm surprised, bemused & a bit puzzled why this should "suddenly" become
news. Don't people read the messages & documents I produce?

Here's Part 1 & Part 3 (Part 3 has the coordinates). All three parts of
the document can be found in the FILES section of the Yahoogroups SWSITES.
Full crediting to myself & Bob Zanotti.

PORTUGAL re. MW txs for Radio Sim.
Radio Renascenca's medium wave transmitters which now carry the station's
Radio Sim channel aimed at older listeners are being run on reduced power
to save energy costs. The main Lisbon transmitter on 594 kHz which is
rated at 100 kW (but had been operating at 10 kW) has now been reduced to
only 1.5 kW. Power of the 10 kW transmitters on 891, 963, 981 and 1251 kHz
has been reduced to just 1 kW, while the 1 kW transmitters continue to
operate at full power. Braga 576 kHz has been switched off as the area is
served by an FM transmitter.
(Information from Radio Renascenca technical staff during EDXC visit on 9
Sept)

Reception of Radio Sim on 594 kHz was extremely weak at our hotel in
central Lisbon.
(Dave Kenny-UK, Oct BrDXC-UK Communication magazine via dxld)

I do not mean to contradict RR staff, but I suspect that the tx at Seixal
(963 kHz) is running at a power level higher that the mentioned 1 kW; when
Radio Sim uses the spare transmitter (1 kW), in order to replace the main
unit during maintenance work, the signal on 963 kHz picked up here (at
Evora) is much reduced.

On the other hand, when the transmitter is running at full power, I can
get a fair signal - even using an ordinary, cheap radio (for not
mentioning my Sony 7600 GR, for instance). I do not know whether R. Sim
keeps using 10 kW, but, as I explained, whether the power is strongly
reduced, the coverage beyond the region of Lisbon, specially in the
Alentejo region, is clearly affected.

While that, in spite of using only 1.5 kW, tx at Muge keeps providing a
fair coverage of the south & the center of the country; the signal at
Evora is stronger than the one from Seixal.

A note regarding the inactive MW outlets: besides Braga (to be more
accurate, the tx is actually located wothin the municipality of Vila
Verde, close to Braga), the remaining switched off txs are Valongo, Viseu
(both 1251 kHz 10 kW) and Evora (927 kHz 1 kW). These outlets were
actually chosen because they are located in areas where Radio Sim has VHF-
FM txs: Braga 101.1 MHz 10 kW, Valongo 100.8 MHz 1.5 kW & Portel (near
Evora) 97.5 MHz 0.5 kW.

RUSSIA 15195 Exact 1000 Hertz tone signal procedure heard MIDST on
Radio Tatarstan Kazan program at 0800 UT CONTINOUSLY (scheduled 0810-0900
UT), seemingly from Armavir Tbilisskaya Krasnodar site, which is also in
use in coming B-13 winter season on 12095 kHz then.

5930 R Rossii, Yelizovo, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, at 1227 UT on Oct
1st, "Blues in the Night" by Sinatra(?), including whistling segment, it
must be American Standards night at R Rossii during its final hour before
midnite sign-off // 5940 kHz Magadan. 5930 kHz is a couple words ahead of
5940 kHz which is quite weaker this time, respectively rating fair and
poor.

7320 R Rossii, Arman, Magadan, at 0539 UT on Oct 03, ID: "Okhotsk" as
HFCC-registered. Also heard same day at 1246 UT during jazz song in
English? Fair signal with flutter, getting into winter propagation mode
this early from 59+ degrees north.

RUSSIA/ARMENIA [to GEORGIA/Abkhazia] Radio Republic Abkhazia (the name
is based on their ID in Russian) is resuming its transmissions on SW // on
traditional on MW {Sukhumi-Abkhazia, wb.} 1350 kHz: noted when was an
obstacle to REE and Algeria *0355-0502* UT on 9535 kHz on 6 and 7 October.

On 8 October observed under V of Russia in Turkish on MW {Yerevan-Gavar-
ARM, wb.} 1350 kHz with ID "eReMeFeM Haber Program {#}" (RM FM is Radio
Moscow on FM, because VOR in Turkish has big net with FMs transmitters in
Turkey. They play very quality choice of pop/rock hits in English from
1950s to 2000s)

With IS, next National Anthem of Abkhazia, ID etc. On SW {9535} on 6
October at 0400 UT IS, National Anthem, ID, military choir songs, etc.
till 0500 UT (when RTA Algeria via Issoudun France relay was here) on
9535 kHz, ID, switching for 1 minute of news from V of Russia in Russian
and close down at 0502 UT.
(Rumen Pankov-BUL, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 9)

# = V of Russia in Turkish should properly be called "Haberin Sesi",
see page
<http://www.rsfm.com.tr/>
<http://www.rsfm.com.tr/frekanslar.html>
<http://www.rsfm.com.tr/iletisim.html>

- unequivocally, Rumen Pankov heard after months of interruption Radio
Republic Abkhazia on SW Sukhumi 9535 kHz on Oct 6th and 7th once again.
Noted at 04-05 UT, with the various descriptions of the local coloring
Abkhazia, national hymns, music etc.

- and additionally as previously noted too // on mediumwave Sukhumi
1350 kHz, on local low power,

- and at Sofia receiving post noted co-channel from Gavar Armenia also
1350 kHz, but powerhouse 500 kW via sidefire antenna 8-mast 232 degrees
mainlobe (exRadio Moscow) and newly RSFM program - "Haberin Sesi"
according bcaster schedule 04-06 UT - co-channel signal is covered or is
not made distinguishable for him.

The angular difference of the incident signals at 1350 kHz in Sofia are
naturally very low, for a SONY ICF-2010 with built-in ferrite antenna, is
very little - all 8 degrees,

direction Sukhumi Riviera 84 degr,
direction Gavar Armenia 92 degr.

Radio Republic Abkhazia heard by Y.T. on 9535 kHz at latest on
4 Febr 2013, Ivo in Sofia reported RRA silence on SW 9535 kHz from
10 April 2013.

RUSSIA/MOLDOVA/TAJIKISTAN All LW txs and some MW txs will be stopped,
but SW txs will be remain on the air. Heard on 7 October at 1512-1557 UT
Radio Rossii stream #5 on 5930 // 6160 // 13735 kHz and from 1600 UT on
13735 // MW 945 kHz (site Novocherkassk Ryazan District, Rostov Oblast)

and at 1530 UT on stream #4 on 6085 // 6195 kHz (1512-1657 UT and cl/down
on both freqs).

Radio Rossii stream #2 on 7230 kHz {Yakutsk}: 1852 UT warming longtiming
pips, 1900 UT ID of R. Rossii and news, common news in Russian for all
streams.

Really stream #3 is not heard here more - it was only on 4050 SW.

The mystery of two different pips on MW 927 kHz at 0251 UT seems to be:
one is from Tajikistan and the other is {Grigoriopol Maiac #} 1548 (VOR
px) minus 621 (Tiraspol px) = 927 kHz. On 927 kHz often are heard Radio
Japan in Russian and ?Urdu? 1600-1635 UT.

This was just posted today on the Radio Exterior website:

<http://www.rtve.es/radio/20131014/loteria-navidad-radio-exterior/764480.shtml>

From October 28, Radio Exterior de Espana will permanently conclude its
shortwave transmissions from its relay station in Cariari, Costa Rica. At
the same time, from that date, broadcasts from its transmitters in
Noblejas, Spain will be considerably expanded.

These changes will affect those listeners in Central America, North
America and the northern part of South America's Southern Cone who tune
us.

In the coming days, we will post and announce our new frequencies and
times in which you can hear Radio Exterior de Espana on our webpage and
programs.

U.K. Woofferton Celebrates 70 years - Invitation.
From David Porter Classification:
Unclassified / Not Protectively Marked.

Hi BBC Radio Shropshire, On Wednesday we will be celebrating 70 years of
broadcasting short wave programmes around the world from Woofferton for
BBC World Service, the Voice of America and many other state or
organisation broadcasters.

Woofferton is the last remaining UK Shortwave broadcasting site
transmitting programmes to North Africa, Russia, the Middle East, Europe
and South America.

You would be welcome to come to Woofferton either on Wednesday when we
celebrate with our invited guests BBC World Service and many stories from
retired Woofferton staff or on Thursday (the official 70 Year landmark!).

A recently retired colleague David Porter would be happy to talk to you
about the history of Woofferton and its use in the cold war.

I can be contacted at Woofferton. I trust this is of interest.
Warm regards, Martin

Monitoring Times continues with a new name.

From the Ken Reitz "Communications" column in the latest (Nov 2013) MT
(Cf. DX-Window no. 485. Ed), // just out:

"The staff at Monitoring Times are not retiring. In fact, most of us have
many years to go before that notion becomes a reality. As the accolades
poured in to MT over the past three months, all readers, regardless of how
long they have been subscribers, have expressed sadness and dismay at the
closure of the magazine, following the publication of the December, 2013,
issue. Hearing those sentiments, I came to believe that there might be
enough interest to warrant continuing the publication in some other form.
With that in mind, I've taken it upon myself, as managing editor, to
explore the possibility of publishing a follow-on magazine not connected
with Monitoring Times, Grove Enterprises or Bob and Judy Grove.

"The new monthly publication, called The Spectrum Monitor, will debut with
the January, 2014 issue (timed to appear when ordinarily the January issue
of MT would appear). It will be an electronic magazine, similar in style
and content to MTXpress (the electronic version of MT). It will be
produced in PDF format which can be read anywhere in the world on any
desktop, laptop, iPad, Kindle Fire or any other device on which PDF
documents may be opened...

"In The Spectrum Monitor you'll see some very familiar bylines. These are
the experts in all the facets of radio who have helped make MT the best
full-spectrum magazine available. And, we are excited about continuing our
work for the new publication. The success of The Spectrum Monitor will
depend on those who currently subscribe to MTXpress, as well as many of
the print-only MT subscribers, signing up, now that there is only one
issue of MT left. To do so, and to find out more, go to
<www.thespectrummonitor.com>
I hope you'll join us for continuing adventures in the HF spectrum
and beyond."

Hello DX-Friends,

the Rhein-Main Radio Club (RMRC) in Germany is making a DX-magazine
program with the name "European Radio World" which will report on radio
clubs and DX-activities in Europe and will be broadcast on shortwave. Any
radio club can help with program content by explaining who they are and
reporting about their DX-camps and other club activities.Clubs would
thereby be able to explain about the radio hobby in their country to many
other interested DXers in many other countries. We want to promote the
radio listening and DXing hobby and hope that you will help us.

The RMRC can provide each radio club, at no cost to the club, 30 minutes
of broadcast time to introduce their club and explain about themselves.
Anyone interested in helping should please contact the RMRC at
<mail @ rmrc.de>

Thank-you for helping and good listening.
