ALBANIA 7464.976 Radio Tirana Shijak site, only tiny S=3-4 on
backlobe signal of NoAM sce, Albanian 0040 UT Jan 26.
Distorted by UTE digital mode 7465.7 to 7474.5 kHz.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 26)

BRAZIL 4885.019 R. Club do Pará, Belém PA, logged at 0434 UT Jan 25,
S=8 signal in southern Germany, "... palabra problemas de Brasil ...".

6134.886 R. Aparecida, Aparecida SP, at 0508 UT weak S=6 signal,
undoubtedly Portuguese language program, not Spanish.

9645.377 ZYE957 Radio Bandeirantes, Sao Paulo SP. Not religious, buth
rather very nice mixed Brazilian music / singer program at 0543 UT Jan 25,
S=5 weak to fair level.

9664.369 R Voz Missionária, from Camboriú SC, weak to fair S=5-6 signal,
nice Brazilian religious canção singer. // same on 5939.839 kHz also S=5
on Jan 25 at 0550 UT.

9818.900 Radio Nove de Julho, Sao Paulo SP, at 0552 UT Jan 25. But
disturbed by sideband splash.

Rather 9818.901 kHz, Radio 9 de Julho at 2034 UT Jan 24. But from 2055 UT
CHN on this channel.

BRAZIL Re 11780v wanders up frequency alot.

Today Jan 27 at 0710 UT RNB noted on much odd 11783.215 kHz, and hit
heavily CRI English from Cerrik Albania relay on 11785.0 kHz.
// RNB on 6180.004 kHz in 49mb.

11783v S=8 in California post, S=7 in Queensland.
6180v S=9 in California post, poor S=5 just above threshold on sunset
in Queensland.

RNB off Jan 26. I tried to measure the odd frequency 11780v. Nothing heard
of RNB on both 6180.005 and 11780v kHz at 10-12 UT this Sunday morning
Jan 26.

11783.196 heard on poor propagation level on threshold S=4, at 2354 UT
Jan 28. // 6180.000 even frequency, latter much stronger here in Germany.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 26/27/28)

11780.1 on Jan 21 at 0620 UT, RNA is playing "Cielito Lindo" in
Brazuguese version, also // 6180 kHz. Just tuned over from 9420/7475 kHz
Greece, q.v., another mostly-music station we enjoy, a hard choice between
them. 0655 UT ID with slogan "Nacional da Amazonia voz mais perto de
voce". It's notable that 11780 kHz is always the 25m SSOB in the
nightmiddle, and even the OSOB.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Jan 21)

11783.1 on Jan 25 at 2118 UT as RNB is strengthening, it's still way off-
11780-frequency. This time I measure it by the notes-on-the-keyboard
method against 11784 and 11782 kHz BFOs: A very close beat to A5 880 Hz
below 11784 kHz, so that's 11783.12 kHz. From 11782 kHz it's Eb6 1244 Hz
above, or 11783.24 kHz, so make it somewhere between those like 11783.18
kHz, but closer I think to 11783.12 kHz.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Jan 21)

BRAZIL RNB was on air again this Jan 31 morning at 0800 UT. In the last
days was somewhat irregular on SW service. This morning heard with very,
very beautiful music. The 25mb tx wanders still around 3 kHz higher on
11783.205 kHz and disturbs CRI Cerrik Albania relay there. // RNB but even
stronger in the 49MB on 6180.005 kHz channel. Neat statement given, one
'also' understands "Bom Dia Amazonia" at exact 0700 UT.

Similarly good music is also often played the case on R Brasil Central at
11815.293 kHz, listened today at 0758 UT Jan 31.

Radio Aparecida well appearance on all three SW channels at 0749 UT,
6134.958, 9629.781, and 11854.921 kHz.

6059.784 kHz was the RSDA sermon frequ in 49mb, under threshold at 0724UT.
And also on 6119.990, 9565.072, and 11764.753 kHz.

CANADA 6160 Newfoundland CKZN St. John's, at 2344 UT Jan 16/17, under
CKZU Vancouver. Vancouver with "On the Coast" program, while St. John's
was airing "As It Happens" until 2400 UT. At 2359:30 both stations ran the
same promo for "The Current", CKZN slightly behind CKZU.

0004:30 UT heard CKZN with CBC Radio theme music and then recognized "The
Current Review" with Anna Maria Tremonte. Very poor.
(Harold Sellers-BC-CAN, dxld Jan 22)

CANADA The two low power transmitter of CBC Radio One in Canada on air
today Jan 31 morning, but in terms of frequency very close to each other

6159.989 CKZU Vancouver, and

6159.974 CKZN St. Johns.

Can only be exact set by the powerhouse signal on Vancouver isl. when
listened to local remote Perseus net SDR. The powerhouse local CKZU signal
splatter quite handsomely from 6144.8 to 6173.4 kHz range ! At 0729 UT
heard a program relay from downunder ABC Australia origin.

CUBA RHC signals vary in signal strength this morning Jan 25 into
southern Germany. Usually S=9+25dB strong both 60 mb outlets. "Radio
Rebelde, la emisora de la revolución cubana" on 5025 kHz and RHC 5040 kHz
in Spanish before 0500 UT.

6000 kHz powerful at S=9+25dB, RHC in English at 0455 UT, report on
"childrens classes on guitar music - all over Cuba ...".

6060 S=9+10 and 6070 less strong at S=5-6 level, both in Spanish before
0500 UT.

From 0500 UT English on frequencies 6060 and 6100 kHz, both S=9+10dB, but
less strength on 6000 kHz after antenna change in Cuba with poor S=4-5
signal only. Station ID at 0501 UT, news on MEX leader report to Cuba.
6165 kHz fair S=8-9 signal, news report of 1600 soldiers and 4000 African
peacekeeper forces in CeAF capital settled now.

Fair RHC Spanish signal on 6070 kHz S=8 at 0506 UT Jan 25, and // rather
poor S=4 just above threshold level noted on 9810 kHz towards Germany.

RHC 6100 kHz noted til 0700 UT on Jan 31
VERY DISTORTED AUDIO CHARACTERISTIC,
the TX final stage seemingly faulty.

Clean audio signal instead on 6000 kHz powerhouse, 6060, and 6165 kHz.

CUBA Message from Arnie about Radio Progreso Tropical 60 meter band
station.

Dear amigo Wolfie:
Radio Progreso's successful test from October to December of 2013 using
4765 kHz frequency registered to Cuba at the ITU with 50 kW
omnidirectional and high take off angle antenna was completed on the last
day of December and starting January 1 2014 it is now a permanent daily
service 7 days a week.

Under study now is the possibility of extending the on the air time
starting at 2300 UTC, so that the broadcast will be from 2300 to 0500 UT.

As regards to reports received and QSL verification, the station will
issue a QSL card soon, and in the meantime listeners who report correctly
the transmissions will receive a QSL letter.

Please note that the postal mailing address for the 60 meters Tropical
Band reports is:

Radio Progreso
Atte: Transmision Banda Tropical
PO BOX 3042
Codigo postal 10300
La Habana
Cuba.

In the meantime I will continue to relay the e-mail messages sent via
Radio Havana Cuba's <inforhc @ enet.cu>
to Radio Progreso's Chief Engineer Ing. Jose Antonio Fuentes Beltran that
is going to be the person in charge of verifying and signing the QSL
letters now and QSL cards when they come from the printer.

At this moment Cuba has on the air three short wave services Radio Havana
Cuba in eight languages using frequencies on the 60, 49, 31, 25, 22, 19,
and 16 meters bands.

Radio Rebelde on 5025 kHz 60 meters band

Radio Progreso on 4765 kHz 60 meters band.

CUBA Only RHC on 6100 kHz heard with a very disturbed audio splatter
signal this Jan 31 morning at 0700 UT. With old Tube stations around would
have been typed on a defective part in the final stage.

In contrast, the remaining other signals from Habana were clean to hear in
49 mb, like 6000 kHz powerhouse, 6060 kHz, and 6165 kHz.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 31)

CUBA Unfortunately awake at 1200 UT on Jan 31, as RHC is signing on,
6000 kHz is VG, while 9550 and 9850 are still weakish, so I stand by after
IS and NoAM to copy the opening frequency announcement at 1203 UT. It's
axually correct, at least nominally! In usual Soviet-style disorder

12-16 on 17580, 17730, 15230, 11760, 11860, 12010, 9540
12-14 on 9550, 9850, 6000
14-16 on 15340, 13780, 11750

However, 15340 kHz is missing again today Jan 31 after 1400 at 1433 UT,
uncovering SoAsian music from HCJB Reach Beyond Australia (RHC is audible
on 15230 kHz).

GERMANY [and non] Next round of Deutsche Welle cuts.

The next radio services Deutsche Welle will cancel are those in French,
Portuguese and Urdu. Also go away will Albanian and Croatian, which
already for years were merely undocumented satellite feeds to affiliates
in Albania and/or Kosovo and Croatia, respectively.

English services in general and also for Africa in particular will be
increased at the expense of German, as it is the strategy of DW already
for years, as well known resulting in the complete termination of the
German radio service in 2011. But be aware that this does not say that
radio services, in particular their shortwave distribution, in English as
well as Hausa, Swahili, Amharic and Dari/Pashto (that's maybe what will be
left for the A14 season if the planned cuts are approved in time) have
much of a future. Linear radio is just a side aspect for DW anymore, with
the exception of the distribution costs of course.

GREECE ERT Avlis 7475 and 9420 kHz Jan 24 / 25.

This evening (Newfoundland time 8:15 pm UT 2345 on Jan 24), I am hearing
exERT / Avlis on 9420 and 7475kHZ, both with strong signals, no
interference, lovely sound (especially on 9420 kHz). There is a little bit
of slow fading on both but nothing that would stop me from listening.

The wonderful music I am hearing reminds me of the "old days", that is,
before last June. I have not recently seen any detailed and up-to-date
English news. Can someone in the know fill me in on what I have missed is
the new government broadcaster now operating Avlis? Or is it the remnants
of the occupiers?
(Philip Hiscock-NFL-CAN, dxld Jan 25)

re ERT / Avlis 7475 and 9420: // and 3rd TX unit too on 11645 kHz at 0110
UT Jan 25. And also heard in Jan 25 at 05-07 UT slot this morning here in
southern Germany.

But all three outlets are much OVERMODULATED, performing of FULL POWER on
broadband signals:
 7475 at 7465 to 7500 kHz range, S=9+45dBm,
 9420 at 9405 to 9434 kHz range, S=9+40dBm,
11645 at 11633 to 11657 kHz range, S=9+25dBm.

Lady announcer in Greek at 0600-0606 UT "Thought For The Day" program
followed by nice Chopin piano music performance from 0606 UT.

"Elliniki Dimósia Radiophonia" new government public broadcaster started
now on MW 729.012 kHz too.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 25)

GREECE Cf. bc-dx #1147 - Excuse me please, but the broadcast on MW 729
kHz is not new Mauno - see the info from 8 Dec 2013 and earlier. By the
way there is no current schedule on SW from Greece now - all is irregular.

Some examples: On Dec 28 at 0345 UT - no any signal from Greece was on
7450, 7475, 9420, 11645 etc.

On Dec 27 at 1910 UT Radiophonikos Statmos Chania (they say 'Khania') ID
was heard on MW 1512 kHz and // SW 7475 and 15650 kHz, MW 1404 kHz -
strange prgr was on MW 1260 kHz where two signals there were - on // 1512
kHz and another with ID "Elliniki Radiophonia".

On Dec 24 (Friday) ERP was noted 0400-1250 UT on 7450, 9420, 11645 kHz,
and till around 0630 UT also on // MWs 1260, 1404, 1512 kHz.

Dimostos Radiophonia since end of November or earlier is with own prgr on
MW 729 kHz. Irregularly there are mx test prgrs on MW 1044 kHz.

KOREA D.P.R. Does anyone know if the "Voice of (North) Korea" streams
anywhere online?

I can't find anywhere that they do.

The website for Voice of Korea
<http://www.vok.rep.kp/CBC/english.php>
doesn't seem to have any reference to their being a radio station at all
... no frequencies or program schedules ... and no streaming service.

Anyone familiar with this broadcaster?
(B-T-M prodigy, dxld / ODXA Jan 31)

Voice of Korea (North) streaming?
A couple years back they had a streaming capability that required their
own web non-standard player that I chose not to download lest it scramble
my PC's brains. I don't think I visited them since.

You might also want to monitor this website for info on media in North
Korea including VOK:

<http://www.northkoreatech.org/tag/voice-of-korea/>

I just now checked out the VOK website; there's audio available for
individual stories but no "packaging" of a daily broadcast, from what I
could quickly see.

Shameless cross-promotion: This year's Winter SWL Fest will feature two
forum sessions on North Korean media and radio, led by an Australian
gentleman (Mark Fahey) who has traveled there. See
<http://swlfest.com>
for more details; the Fest is coming up in mid-March.

Re: Voice of Korea (North) streaming?

Hello Wolfgang! THANKS for forwarding this eMail to me. As far as I know
VOICE OF KOREA doesn't stream any programming. There is only audio-on-
demand available from their website
<http://www.vok.rep.kp/CBC/english.php>

And WRN
<http://www.wrn.org/listeners/#voice-of-korea-north-korea>
ceased the audio-on-demand service.

The only stream I know of is Korean Central TV Station (KCTV)
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Central_Television>

via South Korean website
<http://112.170.78.145:50000/chosun>

and Japanese website
<http://tvmaniac.client.jp/asia/kp001.html>

You may also copy this link
<mmsh://112.170.78.145:50000/chosun?MSWMExt=.asf>
and paste it into the VLC player "open network stream" option.

By the way ... today is the traditional Lunar New Year's festival and they
are currently (10:00 UTC 19:00 Korean Time) broadcasting the New Year
fireworks from the banks of the River Taedong!

Hope to have been helpful! Enjoy our hobby!

MOLDOVA [Ukraine not] 7545 at 0017- UT, TWR on Dec 30 Open carrier
with a bit of polar flutter. Otherwise strong. Could this actually be the
Ukrainian transmitter warming up near Mykolayiv, and listed erroneously as
Simferopol Crimea? But, the carrier cut at 00:19 UT again. Listed to
India, and there's no one else at this time, so is it from TWR, and is it
still from Ukraine, where SW seems to have gone the way of the Dodo bird!
Carrier returned at 00:27:30 UT. Crash start into TWR programming at

(Wlater Salmaniw-BC-CAN, DXplorer Jan 4)

I'm hearing the broadcast today (Jan 24) on 7545 kHz that you list in your
DXpedition log as signing on at 0030 UT and it is indeed in an Indian
dialog and a good S3 signal w/ polar flutter; however, WRTH doesn't list a
7545 kHz frequency for TWR India (only 7505 kHz) and the transmitter sites
seem to be limited to Samara, Angarsk (Russia), and Puttalam (MW only on
882 kHz). Is there a more updated list for TWR India?
(Bruce Churchill-CA-USA, DXplorer Jan 24)

WRTH 2014 does list TWR India on 7545 kHz between 0030-0130 UT. Only the
site has changed, as Irkutsk/Angarsk Russia was closed, HFCC gives it as
SMF Mykolaiv Ukraine.
(Mauno Ritola-FIN, DXplorer Jan 24)

7545 kHz empty channel at 0100 UT tonight, Jan 25.

SMF Mykolaiev Luch bc site in Ukraine ceased Aug 31, 2012 for ever.

SMF Simferopol - ITU short call.

Ukraine location, veiled location at ITU tx site list,
some 40 years ago by USSR communist government.

ITU keeps this older short calls - kept for compatibility reasons. SMF was
mentioned last in WRTH 2012 under Ukraine country. But also 11620 kHz SMF
appears again in A-14 registration, under UKR RUI RRT.

Business partner of TWR in formerUSSR states is RAM FMO
i.e. <radioagency.ru>

but
business partner of KCH veiled Grigoriopol Maiac MDA location
is VOR, or WRN.

After Angarsk ceased
B-13 TWR 7545 kHz seemingly appears real from GRI Grigoriopol-MDA site.

In A-13 seemingly this broadcast 0030-0130 UT is back to Tashkent
Uzbekistan on tentat. 11600 kHz?

Weak carrier on 7195 kHz that I don't remember seeing there before.
Surrounded by some pretty strong hams + the usual splash from the very
broad 7205 kHz broadcaster, so no idea of content...

Extremely light in VK4, Wolf. Yesterday, I did not hear it at all (at 2045
UT, I was a bit late in picking up your message). Today, the carrier was
switched on at exactly 20Z - so far, just music. I'm not going to be much
use doing an ID on it, I am afraid - it is that light.

The daily China radar on 6930(ish, very broad) is extremely strong here,
so one assumes I have a path.

Re: Another one on 7195 kHz?
7195 kHz may be Uganda Radio which broadcasts music, with news and talks
in vernacular Luganda, Swahili and English in local daylight hours - about
0630 to about 1400 UT. They have not shut down in spite of numerous
protests over a year.

USA WRMI QSL from First Day of Okeechobee Broadcast...

Arrived in my mail yesterday, signed by Jeff White, complete with "First
Day of Broadcasts" sticker and a photo of the outside of transmitter #7
(which is beamed toward Africa) for reception report of Brother Stair's
first transmission on WRMI at 7570 kHz (which ended at 06 UT on Dec 1,
2013 the transmitter is on for a few more hours nowadays). Perhaps World
of Radio listeners will start receiving their QSLs from WRMI in the near
future, if they haven't already done so...

Unfortunately, the post card is just a bit too tall to fit into the
standard plastic photo/ QSL holder/preserver, so I'll have to find another
way to store it in my QSL folder, which has QSLs from 1992-1993, when I
originally got into SWL.

USA {S-C} Just heard from Larry Will of Area 51, Jan 31:

"Hello Glenn, Allan tells me that Brother Stair will be reverting back to
his pre-January schedule on WBCQ as of February 1. Presumably this means
that BS programming will be limited to the following

Sun-Thu 0100-0400 7490
Sat 1400-1800 15420

I am hearing BS on 15420 kHz as I write this at 1724 UT on Friday Jan 31
with a good but fluttery signal.

I've decided to keep the Area 51 schedule as-is for now, which means WORLD
OF RADIO will stay Monday at 0400 UT on 5110 kHz. Allan and Tom Barna will
coordinate the weekday schedule on 5110 kHz which will probably run 0000
to 0200 UT or so. This will probably include the Christian Media Network
news show and repeats of various WBCQ programming such as Marion's Attic.
I expect Allan's show will also be simulcast on 5110 kHz as usual.
Regards, Lw"

USA NASWA details its 27th Annual Winter SWL Festival program.

NASWA, the North American Shortwave Association, has announced preliminary
program details for its 27th Annual Winter SWL Festival to be held at the
Doubletree Suites Hotel in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania on March 14 and
15, 2014.

The Winter SWL Fest is the largest and longest-running annual meeting of
shortwave radio enthusiasts and hobbyists in the Western Hemisphere.
Beyond the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new contacts, the
conference serves as a forum for discussion of radio-related matters of
interest and import to the attendees, which have numbered in excess of 200
in some recent years.

This year's program of forums features two presentations by Australian
Mark Fahey, who has travelled North Korea extensively in recent years.
Over four successive trips to each province of the country, he has
smuggled in and out monitoring and recording equipment enabling the
capture and analysis of hundreds of hours of domestic radio and television
broadcasting.

Scheduled for successive afternoons on Friday and Saturday, Behind the
Curtain: North Korean Broadcasting and Propaganda, will extensively
discuss and feature audio and video examples of North Korean internal and
external broadcasting, international and clandestine broadcasters that
manage to penetrate through the regime's jamming, as well as descriptions
and photographs of the media infrastructure used by the North Korean
regime as the prime instrument of control over the population.

In addition to the ever-popular annual forums on scanning and unlicensed
broadcasting (otherwise known as pirate radio), the 2014 Fest program also
will feature the following sessions and presenters (subject to revision):

Radio Broadcasting: The Earliest Years - Dr. Harold Cones
Navigating a Future for the Radio Hobby - Sheldon Harvey, President of the
Canadian International DX Club.
Internet Radio 2.0 - Rob DeSantos
A Practical Guide to Loop Antennas - Jef Eichner
Developing a Shortwave Radio Archive - Thomas Witherspoon, President of
Ears to Our World.
Whatever Happened to Digital Radio? - Mark Phillips
Ionosounders and Other Real Time Propagation Aids - Tracy Wood
Ham Radio Tools for SWLs - Skip Arey

There's also David Goren's Friday night Shortwave Shindig radio studio
party, as well as brief talks by Paul Ladd on World Christian
Broadcasting's shortwave transmitter projects, Allen Loudell of WDEL radio
on trends in U.S. commercial radio, especially news/talk radio; and
Sheldon Harvey's annual tribute to those who departed us for a "higher
station" over the last year. Not to mention: the Saturday night banquet
and Grande Raffle!

Why not join us at the 27th Annual Winter SWL Fest? Details on location,
registration, meals and lodging are available from the official web site:
