BULGARIA [to Ethiopia] 17870 R. Xoriyo - Kostinbrod. Noted for the
Friday service at 1607 UT with a long talk in Somali, a short burst of
music then an ID (sounding like "Radio Xoriya ... Ogadeniya") at 1619 UT
and into more talks. There appeared to be some light noise jamming on the
freq but this didn't really bother the signal at this location on Jan 24.
Scheduled for Mon and Fri only. Don't confuse with R. Inyabutatu, which is
scheduled for Sat only on this freq/time.
(Rob Wagner-AUS VK3BVW, ARDXC mailing Jan 27)

15370 ESAT Radio {via Kostinbrod Sofia BUL} at 1700 UT on Jan 23,
Amharic, carrier on before top of the hour, 1700:10 UT music and
announcements, assume an ID in there somewhere, 1701 UT man with talk
(news?); this broadcast is Thursdays only on this frequency. Very good,
with some dual-path echo.

ERITREA/ETHIOPIA I'm not sure if Eritrea is on at all. 7205 kHz for the
first channel is blocked by Chinese stations in the afternoons, I observed
weak carriers in the 1600-1700 range on 7175 and 9705 kHz on various days
this week, but not daily, and hardly reaching a level that should make it
possible to nail them down. Could of course well be mixing products,
Chinese off-schedule operations or whatever.

ETH 7210 kHz not heard for a long time. 7236 kHz: ETH is on 7237v
regularly in the evenings (-1800/1835 UT), and may have only a short
clandestine segment in the morning (0400-0430/0455 UT). It does not seem
to carry any home service in the mornings or evenings. 9565 kHz: not heard
for weeks.
(Thorsten Hallmann-D, africalist, Jan 25)

ETH 5950, best strongest S=8 signal from HoA in our Jan 25 morning, Voice
of the Tigray Revolution, most probably in Tigrinya or Afar, like ID
"Dimtsi Addis Ababa Woyane Tigray" and HoA singer, 0452 UT.

6110.005 probably Radio Fana from Addis Ababa in Amharic, very poor
signal with news till 0505 UT Jan 25. Nothing else from HoA ERI or ETH
anymore at this time. Radio activity from this region is much less than in
previous years.

{UNIDENTIFIED} 7237.1v Believed to be R. Ethiopia - Geja Jewe. Hoping
to hear the English service when first tuned in around 1635 UT, but coped
an almighty het on this frequency from CRI's English service on 7235 kHz.
Using the USB mode, I noted fragments of piano music around 1640, but it
was too hard, especially with the added interference from RA-Shepp and
Riyadh also on 7240 kHz. Came back to it at 1656 UT after CRI had s/off,
but needed to retune down to 7236.9 kHz - it seemed to have moved 20 Hz in
20 min - impressive!

Definitely something there by retuning in LSB mode but still too hard with
the 7240 kHz QRM spoiling the fun. Plenty of carrier but the audio was
just not making it through the hash consistently enough for good copy on
Jan 24.

I've also listed a number of other loggings as noted on Jan 24. Sorry to
be a bit slow getting around to this. They are all listed on the Mount
Evelyn DX Report blog under EARLY MORNING DX, which can be found
at:

GEORGIA [ABKHAZIA] Apsua Radio observed on January 30 as follows:
*0355-0603* UT on MW 1350 kHz featuring nx in Abkhazian at 0400 UT,
at 0500 and at 0600 UT and nx in Russian 0430-0440 UT.

Till 0503 UT under Gavar's powerhouse of VORussia in Turkish and it seems
the tx is with more power than 5 kW and location maybe is not in Abkhazia
- often the Sukhumi signal is stronger than from Gavar.

(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 5)

[later] 6070 kommt sehr breit daher.

(wb)

GERMANY 936 Former German MW-TX site Bremen 936 kHz - demolition
completed!

End of January 2014 the demolition of former Bremen site (MW 936 kHz) has
been completed. It existed only for ten years and seased broadcasting in
2010. The unusual construction and only 45 meter high antenna proofed to
be very effective for groundwave propagation.

GERMANY NEXT ROUND OF DEUTSCHE WELLE CUTS.

The next radio services Deutsche Welle will cancel are those in French,
Portuguese and Urdu. Also go away will Albanian and Croatian, which
already for years were merely undocumented satellite feeds to affiliates
in Albania and/or Kosovo and Croatia, respectively.

English services in general and also for Africa in particular will be
increased at the expense of German, as it is the strategy of DW already
for years, as well known resulting in the complete termination of the
German radio service in 2011.

But be aware that this does not say that radio services, in particular
their shortwave distribution, in English as well as Hausa, Swahili,
Amharic and Dari/Pashto (that's maybe what will be left for the A14 season
if the planned cuts are approved in time) have much of a future. Linear
radio is just a side aspect for DW anymore, with the exception of the
distribution costs of course.

GREECE On 3 February on MW 729 at 0600 UT heard new IS(!) and ID before

At 0530 UT on MW 1512 kHz "Radiophonikos Statmos Chania" ID (on SW 7475,
9420, 11645 kHz ID at 0532 UT "Elliniki Radiophonia". At 0614 UT five

Elliniki Radiophonia - on SW with close down at 0645 UT.

rather bad conditions ?).

a rather unique frequency. Today was surprised not to hear the often
present KCBS Pyongyang which drifts around this vicinity with terrible

KOREA D.P.R. Voice of Korea Pyongyang (North) streaming?

As Richard said, the ending of WRN posting the daily Voice of Korea
programs online is a blow. I have never found the English language service
files on-line, but it is available in studio quality on an audio
subcarrier on Thaicom 5. Thaicom 5 footprint doesn't reach North America
though.

But if you can speak Korean all is not lost!

Voice of Korea, and the Korean Central Broadcasting Service programs seem
to be recorded in segments and assembled to make the broadcast each day.
You will notice that you never hear a mistake or an ummm or errrrr from
the announcers in Pyongyang, thats because nothing seems to happen live,
its a tight prerecorded production.

The audio wav files that make up each segment can be found in some dark
corners of the internet, particularly if you can read a little Korean.

Here is the rundown of today's (Feb 1st 2014) 50 minute broadcast:

start.wav : This file is the interval signal, national anthem and station
identification. (02:39)
2014-02-01-2.wav : This file identifies the broadcast. (00:06)
2014-02-01-3.wav : This file is the daily news and commentary broadcast.
(22:07)
2014-02-01-4.wav : This file segment is usually a song. Today it is
"Leader General Together with the Visitors. (2:12)
2014-02-01-5.wav : This file is a broadcast segment announcement. (00.09)
2014-02-01-6.wav : This file is a song, toady it is a brass band "Country
Song". (05:12)
2014-02-01-7.wav : This file is a broadcast segment announcement. (00.04)
2014-02-01-8.wav : This file is a overview of today's Rodong (Workers
Party Newspaper). (03:17)
2014-02-01-9.wav : This file is a song, today it is "My Country Full of
Hope". (02:28)
2014-02-01-10.wav : This file is a song, today it is a song currently a
massive hit in North Korea by a group called "The Moranbong Band" (04:40)
2014-02-01-11.wav : This file is a song, today it is : "Prosperous
Worker's Party". (03:46)
end.wav : This is the broadcast close announcements with frequency details
and the national anthem. (02:15)

You may have noticed that unlike the external services in other languages
the Korean service doesn't start with the Song of Kim Il Sung & the Song
of Kim Jong Il. This is unique to the Korean external broadcast. All other
languages feature the Kim worship songs as well as all the domestic
services.

So you can have a listen to all of the above files joined together as how
it sounds when it goes to air I have assembled them as a MP3 and uploaded
it to SoundCloud.

You can listen to or download the assembled broadcast here:
<https://soundcloud.com/mediaexplorer/central-broadcast-station>

If you attend my two sessions at the Winter SWL Fest next month you will
learn just about every thing there is to know about the media of North
Korea!

I will be preparing a handout that will describe how to access these
files, so you to can grab them each day, together with lots of other
interesting things. A lot of what I will be presenting has never been
heard before, so come along.

After the presentation I will put a link to the notes here at the dxld
group as well.

Cheers,
(Mark Fahey, dxld Febr 2)

MYANMAR   {ABC Australia px repeat}
9730.00 Myanmar Radio. Ever since Myanmar signed an agreement with ABC to
share programming, I have been on the lookout for an ABC English program.
Jan 29 finally found it here and is probably a weekly Wednesday show from
1105 till 1118 UT; "Lesson four - checking in" with skit about Miss White
checking into a hotel; in English and vernacular; poor-fair with ACI;
several mentions of "A-B-C Radio Australia." Noted 1130* UT.

NIGERIA Voice of Nigeria in English on 15120, istead of 9690 kHz.
Voice of Nigeria in English was observed on Febr 6 from 0900 UT on
15120 IKO 250 kW 007 deg to NoAF, instead of 9690 kHz.
Good signal strength, but very distorted audio and modulation.
(BUL swldxbulgaria website Febr 5)

Febr 2nd also in 06-07 UT slot Kaduna NIG 6089.856 kHz weak signal, co-
channel Bandeirantes Brazil on 6089.949 kHz, and Carribean Anguilla female
sermon on 6090 kHz even.

NIGERIA 11769.872 kHz Ikorodu old TX unit still 127 to 129 Hertz down,
and hopping up and down continously. At 2150 UT on Febr 3, scheduled
21-22 UT.

9689.919 - ...927 kHz, hopps some 5 - 10 Hertz up and down, at 2053 UT
Febr 1. Scheduled Voice of Nigeria Hausa sce to West Africa at 20-21 UT,
at 20.57:10 UT close-down, cut off. Rather poor S=6-7 signal westwards to
western Africa. Nothing on v11770 kHz.

9689.894 kHz rather tiny poor S=4-5 signal this morning at 0814 UT
on Febr 4.

Frequency oddity of 106 to 130 Hertz down again...
Ikorodu / or Abuja new Ampegon unit of 2012.
That will never happen on a very modern electronics product of European
electronic radio industry, which new Ampegon-Thomcast installation
is only 18 months in operation on the air at Abuja yet.

... Rumours have been around for several days ...

Re Abuja new 3 x Ampegon-Thomcast transmitter ...
Oh, that everything is so negative and complex.

AFRICA is different, here the response get. The native African guys have
done it and many parts are out of order or even scrapped there in Abuja.
The Ampegon RIGID rotatable antenna is no longer in function,
"the beautiful rotating antenna is already broken."

There are 3 x transmitter of TSW2300 type by 250 kW of power, ... each
have their own exciter type of Thomson broadcast). The exciters are
actually rather stable in frequency. They also have GPS connectivity.
Maybe that is <failed> now ?

It's not known yet, "and if there ever the other two 250 kW units at the
station are still running?". At for clarification "Main Power Grid,
complete control unit, frequency converters, and power supply", - is not
functioning at present.

Now we can make ourselves as our own thoughts about Voice of Nigeria
either originate from Ikorodu or Abuja. And stir up in the coffee grounds
around, whether the 'Satellite Feeder Audio Forwarding', and station and
program announcements for transmission in Hausa or English fit for Ikorodu
or Abuja ?

The best way to report the pure bare frequency of VoNIG program only?!
btw. Perhaps - except on 6089v kHz which originate real from Kaduna-NIG...

Seemingly is a fake of Anatoly Titov in the past soviet and post-soviet

Orsha, Tver/Kalinin, Vinnitsa, Zhigulevsk-Jigulevsk. etc. locations.

Probably R Moscow SW broadcast Blagovochensk were real transmitted via
Khabarovsk or Komsomolsk-na-Amure sites instead.

The only SW antennas are visible on the former jamming center at

I guess Blagovochensk is situated rather southerly in Siberia terms.

So a lot of jamming broadcasts against US Radio Liberty and others occured
also from Blagovochensk site

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and Sakhalin.

Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Communications has banned demolish
Shukhov Tower.

Ministry of Culture sent to the Ministry of Communications official
protest against the possible dismantling of the Shukhov Tower. On it
informs "Interfax".

Head of the department of control, supervision and licensing in the field
of cultural heritage Vladimir Tsvetnov noted that "cultural heritage,
including the Shukhov Tower, not to be dismantled."

According Tsvetnova, "Heritage Committee has concluded with the Russian
Television and Radio Broadcasting Network (RTRS) security obligations,
which were spelled out conditions for the conservation of the monument, so
all bases for the restoration and preservation of the object exist." The
representative of the Ministry of Culture said that other bases and
opportunities in the department "did not see".

At the end of December 2013 the head of the Ministry of Communications
Nikolai Nikiforov as "Vedomosti", sent to the government statement on the
need phased dismantling of the Shukhov Tower because of the threat of its
collapse. Thus, according to the Ministry of Communications project, then
the tower to be restored. This proposal has also announced Feb. 4 Deputy
Minister of Communications and Mass Communications Alexei Volin.

In 2012 Shukhov Tower on Shabolovke celebrated the 90th anniversary. Then
was offered the option of its restoration, the minimum cost of which
amounted to 350 million rubles. In this earlier Vladimir Putin expressed
readiness to provide for the repair of the tower 135 million rubles from
the budget. The project assumed that the restoration will need to remove
the upper section and the lower repair on earth. Was opposed by the great-
grandson of the architect Vladimir Shukhov also Vladimir, who offered to
host an international scientific expertise and restoration of the
building.

Tower on Shabolovke was designed by engineer and architect Vladimir
Shukhov in 1920-1922 years. In the year of completion of construction

RTT Sfax Tunesia ceased shortwave service for ever ?

<http://www.radioeins.de/programm/sendungen/medienmagazin/radio_news/beitraege/2014/tunesien.html>

U.K. re: Test transmission on 6045 kHz.
In German newsgroup A-DX complaint since last Fri Jan 31 about that
distorted WOF signal at 07-08 UT 6045 kHz KBS Korean daily.

Sven in Norway reported that terrible signal out of WOF since last week.
(WOF 6045 KBS Korean).
6045 KBS WORLD RADIO 0700-0800 daily Korean 250 105 Woofferton G KBS BAB

Since the scrapping of Skelton transmitter site in Cumbria,
Babcock are a bit short on available transmitters.

Today Febr 3 is first weekday to repair the TX unit #'S94 there.
S=9+60dB powerhouse here at my place some 850 kilometers away.

"xx told me the usual sender 'S94' that carries this transmission is out
of service for repairs and so it's being carried at 300 kW on #'S81'.

#'S94' is AMC 250kW so a 62.5 kW carrier at 100% modulation!

I'll check it tomorrrow on a normal rx and see what it sounds like."

JA, DIE MUESSEN DORT NOCH DEN SENDER #S-94 REPARIEREN,
und ob das ueber das Wochenende geschieht ?

Vielleicht sind sie etwas eng an verfuegbaren Sendern, seitdem Skelton

Very strong signal on 6045 kHz starting at 1445 UT until sign off at 1516

I heard this lot on 13 mb last year. Anybody know who they are. The
strengtht certainly implied UK. I don't think I have heard so strong a
signal on 49 metres. They could have been in my back yard !

U.K. Babcock Woofferton carrying KBS Korean on 6045 kHz, delivers a very
nice clean signal again on Febr 4th and 5th. No splatter visible anymore,
at S=9+35dB powerful signal.

Re splatter 5995 to 6095 kHz at 7-8 UT Jan 31/Febr 1/2,
"The team told me that they have repaired transmitter 'S81' and it was a
modulator drive stage fault. This is unusual as normally a RF synthesizer
fault exhibits these symptoms."

6045 WOF relay of KBS Korean mornings 07-08 UT has now a clean signal
again in 49 mb. No spurs occured today in 5995-6095 kHz freq range like
done on Fri/Sat/Sun via #'S81' sender unit. Sender #'S94' at WOF seemingly
repaired yesterday Febr 3rd. This morning at 0730 UT Febr 4 noted a S=9+35
dB signal in Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden. Bandwidth is visible
on Perseus screen about 10.5 kHz from 6039 to 6050.6 kHz.

USA {S-C} 7490, Feb 1 at 0702 UT, Brother Scare rerererereplaying his
claim to be on 29 SW transmitters, and again later in the minute, since
there are now *two* unsynchronized transmitters with BS on 7490 kHz, not
just WBCQ. They are making a wobbling SAH as it's BS vs BS. Yet another
self-defeating clash like on 9930 and 9955 kHz. Ivo Ivanov says the second
7490 kHz is WHRI, moved from 7520 kHz at 06-08, while WBCQ is on 7490 kHz
at 05-11 with BS.

Or has been: as we reported yesterday, from Feb, BS on WBCQ 7490 kHz is
supposed to re-contract to 01-04 UT Sun-Thu only. So maybe this clash is
only once for the transitional period. Surprised if WBCQ agreed for WHRI
to move onto 7490; there was nothing wrong with 7520 kHz. However, for A-
14, there is a gap at 05-12 UT between WBCQ and WWCR reservations on 7490
kHZ, so why not?

Meanwhile, 5110-CUSB is still WBCQ with BS at 0705 UT on Feb 1 check, and
unusually much stronger than the BS on 5085 kHz WTWW, as the skip is long
with the TN signals barely propagating to here. 5110 kHz is also supposed
to be Scare-free from now on in February; we'll see.

See also USA: WRMI where some BS frequencies have suddenly vanished even
before Feb 1, 7570 and 11825 kHz: would that be a reduxion in total hours,
or some technical problem?
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 1)

USA On 5830 kHz is NOT WWCR and NOT TOM, but it is WTWW with Scriptures
for America Pastor Pete Peters.

YEMEN 6135 Yemen Radio in English on SW Republic of Yemen Radio,
Sana'a, heard in English on 6135 kHz at 1800-1900 UT. First observed by
Martien Groot in the Netherlands on 11 January (via dxld).

Confirmed here on 13-14 and 29-30 January with English at 1800-1900 UT on
6135 kHz.

Fair signal but quite difficult to hear due to splatter. The transmitter
usually comes on air at 1759 UT with an ID in Arabic then straight into
the English broadcast. This includes a lot of western pop music as well as
news at 1830 UT and various features about Yemen. Most days the
transmitter is switched off soon after the English broadcast ends either
at 1900 UT or a few minutes later.

The English hour from 1800-1900 UT is a relay of Republic of Yemen's
Radio's General Service which is otherwise in Arabic. Yemen used to be
heard regularly with English at the same time on {Sana'a} 9780v kHz but
that frequency has been inactive at 1800 UT for many years. The full ID at
1830 UT is "This is the English service of Republic of Yemen Radio from
Sanaa".
