ANTARCTICA QSL DP1POL

Felix, V5/DL5XL.

DRM7325 0600-0800 UT English BBC BAB drmmix has been ceased now.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews March 15)

I understand that BBCWS DRM transmissions to Europe may cease from the
start of the A14 schedule period at the end of March, but that there are
unlikely to be any other substantial cuts to shortwave transmissions until
next year (ed).

Also received today here in northern NJ. Strong signal with my Perseus and

a transmitter problem as Rich mentioned, but later it seemed the broadcast
was covered by jamming. According to their website, BBN stands for Berekah

FRANCE/GERMANY/AUSTRIA For Glenn: Media Broadcast does not own the
Issoudun facilities, they are the other way round owned by the {French}
company (TDF) that owns and operates these transmitters. The situation is
such that thus they are no external customer for Issoudun services, and I
understand that using the airtime there is cheaper than using the
[mouthballed} Wertachtal gear. RFI has, as well known, already
considerably reduced its shortwave service, thus quite a lot of the
Issoudun capacity can be used for other purposes now, and this essentially
replaced Wertachtal (together with filling up the slots at Nauen and also
book some slots at ORS Moosbrunn where they are certainly more than happy
about the additional business).

GERMANY {also GDR history music} "Rundfunk International" / Armin Amler

Hallo a-dxer,
Sendereihe "Rundfunk International" bekannt.

http://www.rias1.de/sound4/rias_/kurzwellenclub/kuzwellenclub.html

Papierform beschraenkt. Internet, Mobiltelefon und daemliche
Telefonspielchen von Rundfunkstationen gehoerten der Zukunft an.

GREECE Old ERT rebells R from Avlis noted with Greek folk mx on two TX

GREECE The US IBB "Kavala" (actually located further east in Xanthi

There's more interesting material in this Lampertheim-run Facebook profile
(all visible also without a Facebook log-in, I don't have one either).

And if not known yet: Here are photos of the facility while still on air.

Hallo Wolf Lupus, hallo Peter,

ISRAEL Not only Russian Radio, IBB RFA, ERT Greece etc. etc. reduce
radio power to the public , read this item from Israel on Israel
Broadcasting Authority. (wb)

There has been talk about closing the Israel Broadcasting Authority and
creating a new structure to replace it. When I read the first article a
week ago, I didn't take it too seriously.

From the follow up articles and communicating with someone in the field,
it does seem to be pretty serious.

<http://www.jpost.com/National-News/Erdan-announces-closure-of-Israel-Broadcast-Authority-344495>

"Communications Minister Gilad Erdan announced on Thursday he is putting
into motion measures to close the Israel Broadcasting Authority and
Educational Television and replace them with a new structure." ... "The
eight radio stations currently operating will remain, but the news
departments will be amalgamated into a single division for radio and
television. Radio commercials will be eliminated. The IBA's assets are to
be sold."
[I don't know any plans regarding English news, if this occurs.]

<http://www.jpost.com/Diplomacy-and-Politics/Int-Federation-of-Journalists-calls-on-Israel-not-to-shut-down-Broadcasting-Authority-345771>

"...Finance Minister Yair Lapid announced at the same media conference
that he had come to sign the death notice..."

By the way, they have been talking about a smartphone app for quite a
while and it has yet to come to fruition. I noticed that on iOS at least,
if you use Chrome (not Safari) and go to

<http://www.iba.org.il/world>
and click on IBA News, it does work. The Kol Israel English audio does NOT
work. The audio itself is wma, but they use Flash and Silverlight to get
there.

While there are a number of Flash browsers for iOS (mostly virtual/cloud),
the only one which I have seen work for the IBA website's audio / video is
VirtualBrowser for Chrome (Xform Computing). Their cloud platform
"AlwaysOn PC" also works if you load the Chrome browser. The Firefox
browsers don't work.

VirtualBrowser for Chrome is $4.99, plus .99 a month to get flash access
for more than a few minutes per session. AlwaysOnPC is $18.99 a year. I
just had those clarified by the company (I thought it was $18.99 forever).
I believe that there are versions of both products available for Android.

Unfortunately, WRN no longer has Kol Israel podcasts, although they still
do have KI in their streams. IBA News is no longer on Shalom TV, MHz
Networks or Link TV. It seems that the ways of listening / watching become
fewer and fewer.

MONGOLIA 12014.9 at 1508-, Voice of Mongolia March 8. Reasonably good
reception if not for the more powerful Voice of Korea on 12015 kHz
exactly. Listed in Japanese at this time. Obviously need to use LSB to
best hear them. (Walt Salmaniw-BC-CAN, DXplorer March 8)

12014.9 at 1532- UT, Voice of Mongolia March 10. Quite a good morning all
around, so no surprise that VOM was present with their Engllish program.
Unfortunately made mostly unuseable, except if very carefully listened to,
in order to avoid equally strong Voice of Korea on 12015 kHz! A move by
either would allow both to be heard well!.

RUSSIA Here are recent photos from the Tbilisskaya site (for Glenn:

refered to under Krasnodar which in fact is 120 km away)

It starts with FM/TV gear. Then on the last row of page 2 what must be the
console of the transmitter used by GTRK Tatarstan on 12095 kHz (I don't
know anything else that would still have been on air there at the time the
photo was taken [present Sun/Mon/Tue Maykop radio relay 6020 kHz, wb.] ).

On page 3 the 171 / 1089 / 1170 kHz equipment or at least one of these
transmitters, installed not before 1989 kHz, perhaps replacing what has
just been removed on page 1? And then on the last row of page 3 and on
page 4 more shortwave, also including the 1000 kW gear. One of these
transmitters used to put a huge signal of Radio Moscow and later Voice of
Russia in German into Germany. Sigh.

SOLOMON ISLANDS 5020v - this transmission has been silent for some weeks
now though 9545 kHz continues.
(Bryan Clark-NZL, dxld March 16)

SIBC has been missing from v5020 kHz, but widely heard on 9545 kHz, fading
in here at 0500 UT, in the clear until QRM starts at 1000 UT. Also audible
in NZL at 19-21 UT.
(Bryan Clark-NZL, dxld March 12)

9545 Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Honiara, 9545 kHz. 1047 UT
March 6, Tuned in to cover version of Tom Petty's song "I Won't Back
Down", followed by talk from OM in English with mentions of Solomon
Island. Station ID by OM and YL that sounded like "The Voice Of The
Nation" at 1058 UT. Covered up by CRI on 9550 kHz at 1100 UT. Fair signal.
S-4/5
(Nick Rumple-NC-USA, dxld March 12)

9545 SIBC at 1200* UT on March 9. At 1157 UT the usual ACI ends and SIBC
can be heard in the clear; usual evening devotional in English, ID and NA.
Surprised to be unable to hear anything at all on 5019.85 kHz. They are no
longer leaving the 9545 kHz tx on for long periods after audio ends at
1200 UT; at 1248 no open carrier heard.

9545 SIBC at 1145-1159* UT on March 10. Good signal strength even with
ACI; forecast and update about Cyclone Lusi; pop Pacific Islands songs;
1151 UT "evening devotional" in English, ID and NA.

Continue to find 5019.85 kHz off the air; no trace of an open carrier.
What has happened to it?

9545 SIBC, at 0605 UT on March 12. Half hour show of C&W songs in English
with DJ in Solomon Pijin; 0700 UT news in English (story about "giant
African snails," etc.); shipping schedule; weather ("heavy rain warning
number seven," etc.). Mostly fair -

I've been in touch with the General Manager at the Solomon Islands
Broadcasting Corporation and thought I would pass along some QSL &
Technical information.

The GM tells me the best shot for Americans to hear them on Shortwave is
at night on 9545 kHz. The transmitters are capable of 10 kW but are
throttled back to 5 kW. They have an AM too, at 1035 kHz; that transmitter
is capable of 10 kW as well, but usually only runs about 5 kW.

If you are happy with an email confirmation of your SIBC reception on AM
or SW, you can email the Chief Engineer Patrick Tibaua by sending a note
to:
<ptibaua @ sibc.com.sb>

If you prefer to a QSL by regular mail, send about $3US for postage to:

Patrick Tibaua
SIBC
P.O.Box 654
Honiara, Solomon Islands
Pacific Ocean

Be prepared to wait more then a month for a reply, as mail can take
several weeks going there and coming back.

SRI LANKA 11750, at 1642- UT, SLBC March 8 Nothing noted when I first
durned in at 1630 UT, but there at good level in presumed Sinhala now.
Listed at 125 kW at 345 deg azimuth.

Very interesting report Walter, and reliving he experience !!!
Thanks for the Sri Lanka logs. Yes. 9335 kHz ws for Asia 125 kW.
Changed it to 11835 kHz and it was on last evening 1330-1430 UT.
Yes, that song about Love was Sung by Keith.

If you send a report will send you a special QSL honouring a guy you know
... ha ha!

So no luck with MW yet? BTW 1548 starts up at 2345 well one hour before
Sunrise and also goes to 1530 UT and should increase after the 30th. So
far from NoAmerica have on;y got Bruce sending and getting QSLs.

[later] 11750 SLBC is not daily. But Sat/Sun Sure. Station says ut
depends on the spnsor banks. Frequency is ready and if the Banks want
tyhey come over and Trinco gets activated. I have told them, that is not
good. at least make sure there are definite days or their listeners will
not listen regularly.

re SLBC 11749.917 kHz, Sat/Suns only.

Walt, and Victor,
surprisingly came across of this outlet on March 16 at 16.30 UT when

SRI LANKA 11835 on Sunday March 16 at 1338 UT, VP signal with flutter,
but sounds like Andy Sennitt, to be expected during first part of PCJ
Radio International hour on publicized new frequency via SRI LANKA,
replacing 9335 kHz. Has this broadcast been on hiatus for a bimonth? For
now, apparently no additional frequencies and sites (such as WRMI 11880
kHz), so we could hear it in North America. However, Feodor Brazhnikov
tells me that toward the end, it was 44333 in Irkutsk.

TAIWAN 9734.84 Was interested to see your log, as March 16 heard RTI
off frequency, on 9734.84 kHz {schedule 10-15 UT} from 1238 to 1257* UT in
Indonesian and *1300 UT pips and into Japanese.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld March 16)

9735, March 12 at 1417 UT, Indonesian from RTI is good but with SAH atop
some CCI, whence? Possibly receiver overload from Brother Scare, as Aoki
and EiBi have nothing but RTI at any time on 9735 kHz; while HFCC can't
include Taiwan, banned by the ChiCom, but does have Moscow and Lithuania
at other hours, both wooden? Per Aoki, RTI alternates Japanese and
Indonesian hours from 11 to 15 UT, also alternating azimuths of 45 and
205/208 degrees; so the Japanese service is normally much better here.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld March 12)

But logged on March 18 at 1100-1157 UT Japanese sce on exact 9735.0 kHz.

About unid Chinese on 7530 kHz at 2100-2130 UT.
According to the Chinese DXer, the first half (15 min) is the program in
Cantonese or Hakka, the last half is in standard Chinese. The signal seems
to be from Taiwan. No station indentification was given at all.

Some Japanese DXers suggested the program of the last half seemed to be
religious one.

UKRAINE March 12, 2014. Observed test transmitters incorporating UR at
936 and 972 kHz. This is interesting! As they heard ? 936 kHz small
volume, high-frequency modulation. Interference from Iran decent.
At 972kHz still sound is not included, but the carrier as usual, strong.

In Kiev hear better. Ostensibly antenna "Dawn" in Red on 936 kHz shifted
to the north-east, towards Belarus, Russia. In theory there should be
improvement. A Dnepr is on the side, at a minimum chart. Therefore, good
reception is not expected. In Kiev, obscenities too, but you can listen
to. At 972 kHz, much better.
(Alexander Yegorov-UKR, "deneb-radio-dx", RUSdx)

On March 15, "Radio Rocks Odessa" broadcast ad writing in Russian-"Listen
to the radio broadcast in Ukrainian medium wave at a frequency of 549 kHz
from 0600 to 2400 LT, and at a frequency of 972 kHz from 1900 to 2400 LT,
Kyiv time.Tak that broadcast I realized after testing began in the usual
way.

UKRAINE/CRIMEA/RUSSIA Very right decision to return to 549 kHz. Long
planned. Zone Gear UR1 hearing on this long-wave frequency almost
immediately expanded to the north of the Ukraine, should be up to the
eastern and western regions, as well as think and to the South Coast. Have
not heard UR1 to NE so satisfactorily during daylight. GH 999 kHz compared
with UR1 barely audible, and the new-found "Vesti FM" on three new
frequencies in the upper part of the range is about 07 UT stalled.

Obviously transmitter on 549 kHz is open all day. Now after 0800 to
broadcast the Verkhovna Rada.

Power 500 kW, operating 0400-2200. Former 972 kHz transmitter is disabled.
The issue of funding is not yet resolved, so that might be all.

UK / UNIDENTIFIED 17745 kHz: report I sent to the address mentioned:

"As requested in announcement, I am reporting the test transmission I
heard today on 17745 kHz. I had just tuned in at 1221 UT on March 20 for
some music, with a good signal, one of the best on the band, little fading
and no interference about 10 minutes before sunrise here, when the music
stopped and "You are listening to a test. Please e-mail your report to
<transmissiontest @ gmail.com> "
then a few notes of the standard Babcock music loop before cut off the air
abruptly at 1221:40 UT.

Since you ask for reports, I wonder if you would also verify by QSL card
or letter.

I am also very curious about such tests, as I have heard several before,
showing up on unexpected frequencies. What is the purpose? Was this one
from Woofferton, and are other sites ever tested in this way?

I and other listeners really like the "Babcock music". Could you tell us
something about it? Was it specially composed for this purpose, or from
some previously existing piece of music? What are the instruments? Does it
have a name?

I was listening on my old FRG-7 receiver, with long-wire antenna of about
100 feet running east-west.

Looking forward to your e-mail response, and if you wish to send me a QSL
by postal mail, the address is:

Glenn Hauser
P O Box 1684
Enid OK 73702-1684

I got an *immediate* autoreply, even before the cc to myself appeared:
"Hello and thank you for taking the time to email us your transmission
test report. We will send you a QSL shortly".
(Glenn Hause-OK-USA, dxld March 20)

I had the same auto-reply last year (28 July 2013) for e-mail report with
short mp3 clip attached. Still waiting for the QSL confirmation...

DXing/Pirating WITH CUMBRE on WHRI, 0208 UT March 9 on 7315 & 5920.
Features images of a pirate kid and a pirate ship, v/s by Chris Lobdell.
His signature is atop an old-fashioned embossed seal at the lower edge of
the card, which is completely invisible on my 2D scan which has no angle-
lighting. Even so, impression not completely legible, and front is viewed
on the reverse, showing a star, 1960 year, and MASSACHUSETTS in the
middle; partial around the outer edge, NORTHEAST RING CO. That makes
this paper QSL more valuable than a mere e-QSL. Thanks, Chris! Added to my

VANUATU 3945 VTBC has been absent from 3945 kHz - but news from RNZI's
Adrian Sainsbury on 17 March advises:

"Last week repairs were carried out at Port Vila. VBTC is back on air on
both SW frequencies running a power of 1kw. I can hear 3945 kHz at fair
signal and 7260 kHz very weak. Cheers Adrian".
(Bryan Clark-NZL, dxld March 17)

Thanks for your informative posting! March 18 on 3945 kHz heard non-stop
EZL pop songs from 1402 to 1454 UT, but never heard any announcements (no
ID). So tentatively Radio Vanuatu. Do they have an extended schedule now?
Testing the newest repairs to their tx?

Caution to others - During weekdays do not suggest checking on Vanuatu on
3945 kHz till AFTER "RN2" (Japan) signs off at 1400 UT. Their signal is
just too strong for the weaker Vanuatu to cut through.
Appreciate any feedback!
