Looks like a multiband dipole (above) at the RAE General Pacheco SW TX
site.

Whilst Argentina is now available with Google SV, unfortunately the
imagery around the above site is too far away to be of much interest.
Though there is some new Panoramio imagery, like the shot above that
should be of interest.

Re: TWR Bonaire Old Shortwave Transmitter Site photos.

Thanks for sharing these photos. I have had the pleasure of meeting some
of the TWR staff, and I also attended the dedication of the TWR Manzini
Swaziland station in 1974. Prior to that I assisted in monitoring test
transmissions of the Monte Carlo and Bonaire stations to South Africa;
however these proved to be unsatisfactory.

CANADA CFRX 6070 kHz Toronto coming back. Now for some good news for a
change! Steve Canney, who is the QSL manager for CFRX, tells us that the
transmitter, which had been off the air for quite a while, has been
repaired and is running into a dummy load to make sure everything is
working properly. The plan is to switch it over to the antenna next week.
Hopefully, it will be heard despite RHC having recently taken over its
6070 kHz frequency. Now, wouldn't it be a show of good faith on the part
of RHC to move to another frequency?
(Mark Coady, Sept 22, ODXA YRX via dxld)

RHC is scheduled 23-04 UT. Other main 6070 kHz clash is V. of Korea in
Japanese, 0900-1250 UT (maybe with breaks before hourtops). Aoki also
shows R. Capital, Rio, Brasil, 24h but I don't think it's active. And VOA
Sao Tome at 2000-2030 UT only, not a problem over here.

EUROPE AFN Europe - video - musea.

AFN with the US Hit Parade show was essential listening for me in the
early 60s even before offshore radio, so many amazing US records we had
not heard before in the UK.

Hans Knot has posted on Facebook a link to a black and white
documentary which was produced when AFN was 20 years old.

<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EUx1UJyaeY>

"For twenty years one of the United States' largest radio networks has
been broadcasting news - information - music - sports - and dramatic
programs to an estimated audience of twenty million - yet has never been
heard in the United States. The American Forces Network, Europe (known to
its audience as AFN) has served the military community in Europe since it
began broadcasting from a basement studio in London, England, on July 4,
1943.

This year marks its twentieth anniversary of broadcast operations. THE BIG
PICTURE captures on film the sight and sound of this unique radio network
as it goes about its daily business. Filmed in Frankfurt - Berlin - Munich
and Orleans, France - "The Story of AFN" is informative and entertaining."

GREECE Can someone give me an update on Greece on Shortwave?
Are they still on the air?
(David b-t-m-USA, dxld Sept 25)

eeeh, depends on what you mean with "they". I think the official "new"
public broadcaster is not on SW. But there's ERTopen.com, which is made by
staff of the former, officially closed ERT. Wolfgang Bueschel regularly
reports them as irregularly on SW (simply search DXLD or WWDXC for that
(ert-open, "greek rebels") and you will get an impression). That of course
seems to be somewhat inofficial... No English I believe.

Re: Greece on Shortwave?
I think it's just that the government authorities did not take over the
Avlida facilities. Also there are stil several ex-ERT studios and
transmitter facilities in the hands of ERT Open. I think the new entity
NERIT considers getting these facilities back a low priority and is re-
acquiring them in stages. Also there are still court cases pending on the
legality of the ERT closure by the government. The new broadcaster NERIT
has also many internal issues, with many top level personel changes in
recent months.

Now who pays for electricity (and other bills) to run ERT Open is a good
question. One form of revenue is probably donations from ordinary
citizens. Their web site
<http://www.ertopen.com/> and the F_B page
<https://www.facebook.com/ERTSocial>
provides a bank account where people can donate money for the cause.

Here is the ERT Open Summer shortwave schedule per their web site.
Times are Greek time:

<http://www.ertopen.com/media/k2/items/cache/3ec43cf8b17e2cf0a5931aba3a0c0f89_XL.jpg?t=1405420423>
(Christos Rigas-IL-USA, dxld Sept 25)

It is bizarre that the ERT-Open rebels have been able to take control of
the SW transmitters for over a year without the Greek government doing
anything about it. But what I find amazing is this: How do those
transmitters continue to be powered? Electricity would have to come off
the power grid, or diesel generators. Who is paying for that? Or are the
power/fuel providers allowing the rebels to steal electricity? Is the
government actually still footing the bill, not realizing where the money
is going?

I still hear ERT-open on either 9420 or 7475 kHz during the evening here
in Texas, but, yes, transmissions are irregular.

was the minors match, also between Kerry and Donegal (by coincidence).
Kerry teams won both championships.

Next week's special will be the All-Ireland Hurling Championship, starting
at 1600 UT on Saturday [Sept 27]. It's a replay, as the two teams
(Kilkenny and Tipperary) played to a draw in the championship match two
weeks ago. Don't think there will be a supporting match, as Clare won the
under-21 hurling championship last week. Chuck Albertson, Seattle"

BTW, news has just broken that RTÉ will be closing down LW 252 kHz on Oct
27

re: RTÉ Radio Irish football final game ... 21. Sept.
Also bad performance from Meyerton sidelobe across Indian Ocean towards
Brisbane Australia SDR unit at 1445 UT Sept 21.

Nothing heard downunder of WOF 17495 kHz channel, but 17820 kHz MEY at
S=6-7 fluttery signal at -85dBm. And also 7300 kHz on threshold NOISE
leve, not easy to follow live coverage, S=5-6 at -94dBm.

It's a pity, sometimes also Sydney SDR connection works very well, but
other days the Sydney IP address changes and doesnt' functioning anymore,
and even when put the actual Sydney IP on my Kaspersky ZoneAlarm firewall
'SECURE' zone, net server gives negative replay "can't resolve host by
address, like IP 101.174.62.130 tonight.

1300-1320 logged RTÉ Radio Irish football final game live broadcast.

Google Maps is updated on this site, with the single remaining tower
visible at 43.504655 N 77.010686 E. I had a look at this site early this
year when all (?) towers were still shown. There were 17 of them on the
western side and 13 on the eastern side, most curtains beaming around 120-
130/300-310 degs. As can be assumed, the eastern side was beaming to China
and SoEaAsia, the western side presumably carried the home service
channels and most likely also sky wave jamming. A large transmitter
building is visible at 43.507083 N 77.007084 E,
another one at 43.499647 N 77.003184 E.

MYANMAR 7345, Thazin Radio (presumed), random checking 1210 to about
1300*, Sept 16. Thanks to the timely tip from Dave Valko and Ralph Perry
that CNR1 is silent here now; tuned in at 1210 UT, in LSB, to hear Myanmar
with decent signal all by itself; went to USB to see if that was better,
but surprised to hear StarStar Br St (presumed) reading numbers in
Chinese, underneath Myanmar.

StarStar went off close to 1220 UT. Thazin Radio normally goes off right
at 1330 UT, but not so today. Off close to 1300 UT. I tuned away briefly
to check on 7502-AM StarStar Br St signing on at 1300 (yes, they did) and
when I tuned back to 7345 kHz, at 1301 UT, found Myanmar off. All very
interesting! Attached audio of the two stations mixing together. Amazing
what can be heard without the CNR1 powerhouse here!
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld Sept 17)

7345 Thazin Radio (presumed). Daily well heard without the strong
presence of CNR1. Have yet to actually note a positive "Thazin Radio" ID.
Did have moderate USB QRM from MARS net traffic at 1305 UT, on Sept 20, as
Glenn previously also heard on 7345 kHz.

BTW - Am unable to hear 6165 (Myanmar), with too much QRM. In the past I
could detect them at 1430 UT (English), but recent checks was unable to
hear them under China. Interested to note the following via Aoki - 6165
Myanmar Rakhine Broadc. Stn. 0930-1430 1234567 Burmese. So the name
Rakhine Broadc. Stn. is still being kicked around. Not longer Thazin

obviously a lot of late shipments. Ended at 0857 UT with promo, then live
W again with program notes including a nice ID with frequencies at 0858 UT
and mention of "Bible readling" [sic], sports, and news, then said "Bible
Reading". Good signal at tune/in but faded by 0938 UT check.

Getting some splash QRM from the 9540 kHz CNR1 jammer at 1015 UT check.
Nothing on usual frequency of 5020 kHz.
(Dave Valko-PA-USA, hcdx / dxld Sept 17)

9545 SIBC, random checking from tune in at 1018 to 1100 and 1159* UT,
Sept 17. Grateful to Dave Valko for this very timely tip; mostly in
Solomon Pijin, but with ads and a few brief spots in English; most of the
time strong adjacent QRM, but some clear times; IDs "SIBC, the Voice of
the Nation"; several spots about the upcoming general election, which
maybe the reason for this change in scheduling; strong signal, but noted
strong hum; suddenly audio ended at 1159* UT, with open carrier and hum
continuing on. With them using their single, newer transmitter, of course
5020.00 kHz was silent and also silent was their older off frequency one
there.

SPAIN re Spain (global PR battle has begun to save REE).

Hi Glenn, You probably have seen this already but I can sum it up for you:

Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), one of two of Spain's largest unions, has
embarked on an international campaign to save Radio Exterior Espana (REE).
It has sent out an eight-page statement to diplomats, embassies, cultural
centers, media, Cervantes Institutes and other entities around the world
explaining the need to keep REE on the shortwave bands. Among the
arguments, the CCOO says four to 10 million listeners around the world
currently listen to REE and cites the high quality reception scores
Spain's international station receives from listeners in Argentina, India,
Malaysia and Japan. The union also states that Spanish fishermen, aid
workers, and military personnel in remote areas traditionally rely on REE
broadcasts when they are abroad.

REE also contributes in promoting Spanish culture and the government's
"Made in Spain" foreign trade campaign while keeping millions of Spanish
immigrants informed about what is happening in their home country,
according to the statement.

Of the close to 1,000 letters and emails REE received between May and June
of 2011, 83 percent said they listened to its transmissions on shortwave
and 62 percent of all listeners (shortwave, satellite, internet, etc) came
from the Americas, the CCOO said.

The document also uses quotes from different politicians, including Ana
Mato, who is now Public Works minister, who said in Congress when she was
parliamentary whip that REE is the "only service" of the public
broadcaster that should be saved and supported.

CCOO also criticized the government's decision to closed down the
sprawling Noblejas transmitting site outside of Madrid, saying that it is
"a strategic site" that is not worth sacrificing for some 1.2 million
euros (about 1.54 million US dollars) in savings. It also cites China's
long partnership with REE in using the Noblejas relays.

UKRAINE/RUSSIA Mykolaiv high power test transmissions (Historical).

The following article by Rick maybe of interest to those who didn't read
the original article in Monitoring Times quite some time ago. I never saw
the original article & I'm sure many others in the group won't have
either. I found it fascinating & I re-posted (with some editing) here for
the interest of our readers. My thanks to Rick for his permission to re-
post it.

Mykolaiv high power transmissions.
By Rick Slobodian (Canada) from data collected while I was in Lviv at the
Krasne Transmitter site in August 1998.

In the 70's from the Mykolaiv (Luch) transmitter site in Ukraine,
experiments were performed using three 1000 kW transmitters in parallel.
The antenna consisted of 13 vertical towers in the shape of a parabola (as
viewed from an airplane), it also had a very narrow bandwidth (ca 3 MHz),
and a very narrow beamwidth (approx 5-10 degrees). The result of this was
the gain they obtained from this antenna was a staggering 38 dB! The
reference signal they used it against was a 1000 kW transmitter with a
20dB curtain antenna. The test signal was directed to the Washington/New
York area.

What happened was as follows; tx output power started at 1000 kW and they
increased TX power and monitored received signal strength in Washington.
As the test transmitter power approached 2000 kW they found that the
received signal strength started to decrease. At 3000 kW the received
signal was almost gone, but why? Radio Ionosonde sounders and satellites
were then dispatched to analyse the signal. What they found was
surprising.

At 3000 kW and 38 dB of antenna gain the TX signal was of such power that
it was heating up a spot in the ionosphere but instead of creating a solid
area of reflection they discovered they were actually burning a hole in
the ionosphere and the signal was being shot off into space. They also
noticed that in the area of the ionospheric hole had an effect on
approaching weather fronts. The weather fronts were being deflected around
the ionospheric heated area, an inadvertent weather modification. So they
reduced the power, received signal strength improved, but not much over
the reference signal.

They experienced lots of fading especially when the ionosphere was
unstable, that the solar winds would push & pull at this heated up areas
of the ionosphere and moved it around. They did however notice that as the
ionospheric hole decreased in size, they were also able to transmit a 2nd
signal beamed to the same spot at much higher than the MUF and HPF,
however the received signal was very unstable, because of the lack of
symmetry and alignment due to the number of hops. This method has been
used before, but just for one hop.

The parabolic antenna was modified to a wider beamwidth (approximately 30
degrees) and the frequency range was expanded to 5.5-22.0 MHz. The result
of this was a drop in gain to 29 dB, which is still fantastic.

The high power TX program was cancelled, and soon after many of the
engineers were laid off, but approximately 20-30 were provided safe
passage out of the Ukrainian SSR and ended up in Alaska working on the US
HAARP project.

The connection with HAARP is fascinating. Are these the photos of the site
in question?

Jonathan, glad you liked the article.
The reflector of the site is located here:
46 49 17.05 N 32 12 32.04 E (Coordinates from Wolfgang)

If you use Google Earth & turn on historical imagery & slide all the way
back to 2004 you will see the entire SW Parabolic antenna still in place.
The driven elements (feedpoint) antenna is still there, but not parabolic
reflector masts.

If you turn on Photos layer you will also see several photos of the
feedpoint antenna elements/masts.

As Wolfgang highlighted to me sometime back, the Russian Taldom SW site
also used (4?) of these Parabolic reflector antennas. To the best of my
knowledge only two SW broadcast sites globally ever used these antennas.
The antennas were described as AMO-450 & AMO-900 System antennas.

Olle Alm & Wolfgang provided a lot of material from 2004 era about these
antennas.

Olle Alm had a lot of experienced data on this AMO-900 antenna.
Similar antenna systems erected also at Taldom north of Moscow.

The picture (VoR1) with three tall masts shows part of the reflector wall
for one of the parabolic type highly directional shortwave antennas,
called AMO450 (high band) or AMO900 (low band) by the Russians. The
platform used by the skydiver seems to be one of the masts of the six mast
system assumed to be used by 261 kHz.
(Olle Alm-SWE, dxld 4-190 Dec 25, 2004)

There is also one of these AMO-900 systems at Taldom, which also has three
AMO-450 systems with "only" 9 towers in the reflector wall (unless they
have been brought down in recent years). The beam directions for the AMO-
900 system at Taldom are 289 and 310 degrs, and for the AMO-450 systems
at 68 degrs, 53+100 degrs, and 310 degrs, respectively.

Hello dear Wolfgang,
regarding our high gain antenna systems ("Luch" type) which you mentioned,
both of them are in full set, but they are not used nowadays. By the way,
antenna of 315 degr contains 3 driver masts (for 3 directions: 289 degr,
310 degr, 315 degr). Both 36 degr and 315 degr antennas are tunable
through 6.5 - 25 MHz band (by means of rail systems). Earlier these
antennas were used with single 500 kW or 1250 kW TX unit, but it was so
long ago...

USA WRMI to Expand Family Radio Broadcasts.

As of UTC October 1, WRMI in Okeechobee, Florida will add three hours per
day of programming from Family Radio in Asian languages. This is in
addition to the two hours per day of Spanish-language programming from
Family Radio that WRMI already broadcasts. The new broadcasts will be in
Chinese, Japanese and Hindi.

"This will be a short-term experiment," explained WRMI General Manager
Jeff White. "But if results are good, it could be extended. The idea is to
see how well these broadcasts can be received by listeners in China, Japan
and India. These are very distant target areas from Okeechobee, but recent
listener reports indicate that our signal is audible in much of Asia at
certain times and frequencies. If that is confirmed, we may be able to
begin broadcasts of other programs to these Asian audiences.¨

The schedule for the Family Radio broadcasts via WRMI as of UT October 1,
2014 will be as follows:

1000-1100 UTC daily on 7570 kHz in Japanese
1100-1200 UTC daily on 7570 kHz in Chinese
2300-0000 UTC daily on 5950 kHz in Spanish
0000-0100 UTC daily on 5950 kHz in Spanish
0100-0200 UTC daily on 15770 kHz in Hindi

The Japanese- and Chinese-language programs are on a beam to western North
America, but will also be intended for listeners in Japan and China. The
Hindi-language program is on a beam to Europe and the Middle East, but
will also be intended for listeners in India. The two Spanish-language
hours are two different programs.

Radio Miami International acquired the Okeechobee transmission facility
from Family Radio in December 2013, when the call letters were changed
from WYFR to WRMI. As part of the agreement, WRMI has been broadcasting
two hours per day of Family Radio's Spanish programming to the Caribbean,
Central and South America.

WRMI to Begin Relay of Radio Ukraine International

Shortwave station WRMI in Okeechobee, Florida will begin a daily relay
transmission of the English-language program of Radio Ukraine
International on Thursday, September 25, 2014 on the frequency of
11580 kHz from 2330-0000 UTC. This transmission will be directed
primarily to eastern North America, although it will likely be audible
in Europe as well.

"We are pleased to be able to provide this service to shortwave listeners
at a time when much of the world's focus is on the situation in the
Ukraine," said Jeff White, WRMI General Manager. The broadcasts will
continue at least through the end of 2014.

11580, Sept 25 at 2330.5 UT, RUI IS and English half-hour, first edition
of new relay via WRMI. After the news, at 2336 UT 'Ukrainian Perspective'
mostly about the conflict with Russia; 2347 UT 'Reading Lounge'
introducing Uke lit, the Thursday feature. Sounded like titled "St John's
Eve" by the author a.k.a. by his Russian name, Nikolai Gogol. Closing cut
short at 2359.5 UT for ID, and back to Brother Scare. Good signal even
here tho aimed NE from Okeechobee; replaces WORLD OF RADIO on Thu and a
bunch of other place-holders on other days of week. Jeff White probably
made this deal at last month's HFCC in Sofia. Great to have RUI back on
SW, tho it was their own fault for abolishing it previously.

WRTH 2015 - will be published, as usual, in early December. This will be
the 69th Annual edition! Even though both International and Domestic SW is
declining there is still a lot to be heard out there on those broadcast
bands, so don't consign the SW receiver to the attic (to gather dust) just
yet.

There is a mix of over 200 languages and dialects to get stuck in to, plus
the Clandestine broadcasters are always around from politically troubled
areas.

Some of these are low powered or broadcasting to a different part of the
world and can be a tough challenge to pick up.

All the details you need to stand the best chance of catching these, or
any of the other broadcasters (be it LW, MW, SW or FM), can be found in
WRTH.

You will soon be able to reserve your copy of the 2015 edition and be one
of the first to receive it. Check the WRTH website for pre-ordering
details. If the 2014 edition is still showing, try again in a few days
time.

Charly Hardt RIP

Liebe Listenleser,

Uwe Braeutigam
Vorsitzender der ADDX
