Antennen(-winkeln) in Richtung riesiges Amazonasgebiet vorzunehmen. Dazu
nutzt man einen der dortigen Continental Sender mit 4 bis 10 kW

Passend laesst man dann (in unserer Nacht) den Sender auf 6000v zugange -

BURMA [non]/NORWAY Democratic V of Burma finale imminent.

Myanmar exile radio DVB leaves shortwave, goes online.
Text of report in English by Norway-based, Myanmar-focused Democratic
Voice of Burma website on 23 October.

Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), the country's longest running exile
broadcaster, which first aired in 1992, will enter a new phase on
26 October, switching from shortwave to online radio.

"Surveys show fewer people listen to shortwave nowadays, therefore DVB is
focusing more of its content on new digital media and TV output, which
will also be available via internet and mobile phones," said Aye Chan
Naing, executive director of DVB Multimedia Group.

October 2014 marks the end of an era for DVB radio, which was arguably the
pioneer of Burmese exile broadcasting.

Journalist Maung Too, who was a field reporter for DVB since its inception
as a voice for the All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF), reminisced
about the days when Burma was iron curtained. His colleagues fondly tease
him as a rebel by day who moonlighted as a reporter.

"We are talking of a time when nobody knew what was happening inside the
country; there was war and fighting and human rights violations, a
repressive political atmosphere and information control," said Maung Too.

The then exiled Burmese prime minister, Sein Win, requested assistance
from the Norwegian government to help establish a radio station to reach
Burma with information that the military regime would otherwise censor.
Thus from Oslo, on 19 July 1992, the first shortwave transmission was
broadcast.

The demographic disposition of Burma, with large-scale poverty and
illiteracy in remote regions, made radio news a permeable, feasible and
ultimately popular medium among the public.

The process of broadcasting one single episode seemed tenuous and long,
but as Maung Too recounts the early years, one cannot miss the adventure
that outlined the production of each episode.

"In those days the process of broadcasting news in itself was a struggle,
as we were not allowed inside Burma," he said, explaining how each episode
was recorded on tape and sent to Bangkok, from where it would be sent to
Oslo to be transmitted.

"In a way, [DVB] always echoed the unified voices of all the ethnic groups
in Burma - Shan, Karen, Chin, Mon - against the injustice of the military
government," said a senior DVB reporter.

DVB radio gained notoriety with the Burmese military junta to the extent
that the regime described it as "a killer broadcast designed to cause
troubles" which was "sowing hatred among the people".

DVB radio was often accused of being biased towards Aung San Suu Kyi and
the National League for Democracy. However it has always maintained that
it was never affiliated to any party but rather considered itself a part
of the movement fighting for change in Burma's political system. "We have
maintained a policy of giving voice to the democratic movement in Burma,"
says DVB deputy executive director Khin Maung Win.

In 2005, DVB expanded into the domain of TV broadcasting.

Asked if video was effectively killing off radio, Khin Maung Win said, "I
don't think so. We are just entering a new phase." He explained that there
is a possibility that the contents of the radio shows would be aired via
other mediums and partnerships in Burma. DVB will also apply for FM radio
licences in Burma, he added.

The last episode of DVB radio will be broadcast from its Chiang Mai
station on Sunday morning, 26 October, from 6 -7 a.m.

CANADA 6070.0 CFRX Toronto is back!
Just tuned in to hear CFRX is back on 6070 at 2245 UT.
(John M. Fisher-MA-USA, DXplorer Oct 23)

CFRX back on 6070 kHz. At least a 5-minute ad-string upon tune in 2235 UT
on Oct 23, before News-Talk 10-10 ID at 2240 UT and into Events of the
Day. Sufficient signal before RHC will wipe it out. Tnx to tip from
WH2XDE's Jerry Whitney in NY after 19 UT today. Looks like "commercial SW"
is again live and well. Now to check their non-RHC-hours program schedule
for anything of interest.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Oct 23)

S9+ signal up here in New York (near Albany), absolutely burying Cuba at
the moment (0154 UT).
(John Figliozzi-NY-USA, dxld Oct 24)

CANADA 6069.996 CFRX Toronto. Yes, when tuned in to remote SDR
Rochester NY unit around 2345-2400 UT on Oct 23 noted a S=9 English
language program, signal with phone discussion about Muslim terrorism and
French first family names common in Canada. French-immigrant and
inhabitants of the past 300 years, etc. etc.

Also when checked on Massachusetts unit, CFRX Toronto is ahead of co-
channel RHC signal.

Despite in Lexington KY both station signals are equal signal strength
around 2345-0015 UT.

Measured CFRX Toronto on exact 6069.996 kHz, but 8 Hertz apart distance
another station on 6070.004 kHz underneath, which measured as slightly
minor odd frequency of RHC on KY unit.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 23)

CANADA CFRX Toronto 6070 kHz hrd Oct 24 from 0123 UT tune from Perseus
site in CeGermany using the NoAM beverage - much discussion about
yesterday's terrorist attack at the Ottawa Parliament building and
frequent ads (Nicoret ad at 0123 UT) - annmt by man giving schedule for
complete coverage of Parliament attack "details tonight at 11". Time given
as "9:45" at 0145 UT. Excellent signal mixing with RHC at approx. equal
strength, SINPO 43544 - not bad considering 1 KW vs. 100 KW into Germany!

Also hrd at 0735 UT from Perseus site in Ireland - weaker signal but in
the clear until tune out at 0810 UT with SINPO 24433. Signal remained
steady even as Ireland passed into full daylight. Noted also from Perseus
site in Brisbane with roughly equal signal as Ireland (S2+), but
unfortunately covered by a strong carrier at 0840 UT.
(Bruce W. Churchill-CA-USA, DXplorer Oct 24)

6070-, on Oct 24 at 2246 UT, "News-Talk 10-10" ID from CFRX, good signal
and in the clear, some 24 hours after first heard reactivated, and some
10 hours since I found it missing again in the morning; maybe erratic.

By next check at 0033 UT on Oct 25, heavy QRM with CUBA which was already
using 6070+ kHz all-evening, before CFRX last crashed. At this time here,
the pair are about equal levels, making them equally useless, with a SAH
of about 8 Hz as Wolfgang Bueschel observed yesterday: CFRX is 4 Hz lo and
RHC is 4 Hz hi. This is rather remarkable, considering that RHC is
allegedly aiming 250 kW plus many dB of hi gain right at us, while CFRX is
but 1 kW non-direxional. By 0126 UT, CFRX has lost out to RHC dominance.

So much for friendlier relations between Cuba and Canada. 6070 kHz has
been CFRX's frequency forever (it was old already when I got my first QSL
in 1957y), and Canadian SW stations do not have any frequency flexibility.
RHC has lots of choices on the 49m band; for instance, there's nothing
much (except maybe Brasil) on 6080 kHz, if RHC really needs another
frequency so close to 6060 kHz. O yeah, some lite intermittent pulse
jamming against nothing, so Cuba already knows 6080 kHz ! In B-14, IBB/VOA
usage of 6080 kHz ends at 2200 UT, resumes at 0300 UT from eastern
hemisphere sites, so the 03-04 UT hour could be a problem with VOA English
via Vatican to Africa. Keep looking?

With B-14 seasonal adjustments coming up shortly, now would be an
excellent time for Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich, frequency manager of RHC, to
put this right and move off 6070 kHz - but don't count on it, even tho it
would also be to RHC's own advantage to avoid this interference.

(Ivo Ivanov-BUL, hcdx via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 27)

9860 on Oct 26 at 0026 UT, seems dead air, fair with flutter, but then
just barely modulated in Spanish. This is right at the transition from the
A-14 to B-14 season when there could be some one-day clashes. In A-14,
9860 kHz has been Iran in Spanish at 0020-0320 UT [see also IRAN].

12035 on Oct 26 at 0040 UT, Arab music, good signal but heavy distortion
and hum a la Cairo, and now find it to be // 9860 kHz; 0044:28 UT
mistimesignal ends and R. Cairo news theme. So did 9860 kHz change from
Iran to Egypt in the last few minutes or was it Egypt in the first place?

In B-14, Cairo has registered 12035 kHz at 2330-0200 UT in Arabic, then
Spanish; and 9860 kHz at 0045-0330 UT in Spanish, then English. But Cairo
registers additional wooden frequencies to give them some flexibility.

9860 on Oct 26 at 0242 UT, R. Cairo English to NoAmerica is indeed here
now, ex-9315 kHz; good signal but muffled and distorted so I have to
listen intently for a while to be sure it's English.

12080 on Oct 26 at 0105 UT, poor signal with distortion, flutter,
i.e. Radio Cairo Spanish, ex-12070 kHz with the same degradation.
JBA signal on 11710 kHz, maybe still //, and also on 9860 ex-9315 kHz.

FRANCE Re: France 1278 kHz.
Curious to see "bad repair of the premises" being blamed as a reason to
shut down the 1278 kHz France Bleu transmitter near Selestat. I visited
this transmitter site earlier this year after having driven by it dozens
of times.

There is a 6-tower antenna array, though a woman who lives nearby and
whose retired husband had worked there told me that only the three western
towers are still in use. There is a large, impressive-looking building at
the site, which appears from the outside to be in good condition. The
woman I spoke with said it is mostly empty as services have been
automated. She said someone comes once a month to clean it. There are many
Alsatian speakers in the region who rely on this MW transmitter. I wonder
what this means for the future of the France Bleu Elsass (Alsatian)
service, which is not broadcast on FM. There's been no mention of the
shutdown in regional newspapers.

Re: also // very poor 11645 kHz, weaker than Vatican 11650 kHz.

11645 kHz transmission was always 04-10 UT Africa service at 182 degrees
{40-50degr OFF backlobe at (323-180=143degr) towards Americas}.

{11645 was never east-west lobe ! - and is also mostly at lower power

IRELAND RTÉ Radio 1 on 252 kHz.

The site was first used for Atlantic 252 from September 1989, a joint
venture between RTÉ(20% share) and RTL(80% share) under the trading name
Radio Tara which was formed in August 1986. Chris Cary had already done
some low power tests from Clogher Head, County Louth on 254 kHz in
January 1986.

RADIO NOVA - DUBLIN - LONG WAVE
NOVA - LONG WAVE - 254 kHz:
<http://www.dxarchive.com/ireland_dublin_radio_nova_longwave.html>

Atlantic 252 used two 300 kW Continental transmitters run at 500 kW
daytime, maximum allowed under Ireland's allocation. At first they closed
down at 7 p.m. and advised listeners to tune in to Radio Luxembourg. When
they started 24 hour transmissions the WRTH lists power as 100 kW, Algeria
also dropping power to 750 kW at night.

Following Atlantic 252's closure in December 2001 Teamtalk 252 used the
site from January 2002 to August 2002.

Teamtalk sold their 80% of Radio Tara's assets to RTÉ. RTÉ Radio 1 started
using the frequency on St. Patricks Day, 17th March, 2004, Handbook lists
power as 500 kW. In 2007 the transmitters were replaced by a single 300
Kilowatt TRAM 300L, they did some DRM tests from it overnight for some
months. Statements in the Irish Dail suggest that they had been running at
300 kW anyway prior to this.

Petition to save RTÉ long wave. A petition to RTÉ (on change.org) asking
the broadcaster to continue its long wave broadcasts serving the Irish
community in Britain has been initiated 3-4 days ago. Despite the
postponement of the LW closure announced yesterday, the petition organiser
is still asking people to sign and support the petition:

"We are requesting that RTÉ keep its broadcasting services to the Irish in
Britain. RTÉ announced with one month's notice that it would shut down its
longwave service on October 27. This move was done with no consultation
with its listeners, and will be a significant loss to the whole Irish
community."

RTÉ LONGWAVE CLOSURE POSTPONED
Radio Survivor, By Paul Riismandel, October 20, 2014
<http://www.radiosurvivor.com/2014/10/20/rte-longwave-closure-postponed/>

The imminent closure of the Irish public broadcaster's longwave service we
reported last week has been postponed until January 19, 2015. Its original
shut down date was next week, October 27.

The Managing Director of RTÉ Radio Jim Jennings plans to travel to the
UK to meet with community groups affected by the loss of service to
see what other solutions might be found for them. Longwave is the only
RTÉ radio service that reaches the UK, though the global Irish
diaspora can also listen online.

The outcry over the closure was greater than expected, but Jennings says
the longwave service is still set to be shuttered.

The loss of RTÉ longwave is part of a global trend of national
broadcasters cutting back or eliminating international-serving longwave
and shortwave transmissions, especially those oriented towards countries
with significant internet penetration. For instance, the BBC dropped
shortwave service to North American more than a decade ago, in response to
declining shortwave listenership and the availability of the World Service
online and via public radio stations in the US and Canada.

Still, listeners in cars, older audiences and those without reliable home
internet are left out as these services sunset. It will be interesting to
learn what results from Jennings' discussions with the UK-based community
groups. Will he convince them to take up internet listening, or will there
be a creative third-way solution?

At the end of the day if someone chooses to live in a foreign country
and no longer pay taxes to the former home country it is unreasonable
to expect the former home country to provide services such as radio
free of charge. RTÉ have no obligation to provide this LW service to
Britain or even NI.
(Gareth, Sent from my iPad, Foster?, BrDXC-UK yg via dxld Oct 22)

Hi, surely you're right, but I think sometimes the "former home country"
may find appropriate to broadcast to former citizens as a way of
preserving a link with them. I remember for instance when RAI relayed the
Sunday afternoon football matches on shortwave. 73,

KOREA REP OF 6094.997 kHz UNIDentified East Asian, like Japanese
language heard. At 0900-0930 UT Oct 26 came across of a funny song /
music, from the 30s. In Japanese language of course. Really amusing
jolly programm.

S=9+20dB -54dBm. Talk in between by female + male announcer. All very
amusing and traditional easy listening program. KBS early appearance?
engineer in duty error ? Not in // KBS Japanese 7275 kHz, which had rather
hard rock music played.

But on Oct 28 observed on SDR net at Tokyo unit as follows
6155 and 7275 KBS Kimjae in Japanese lang program.

From 0900 UT KBS Japanese only on 7275 kHz.

6094.997 kHz again, from 0857 UT onwards heard chimes like interval signal
to 0859 UT followed by female announcer in Japanese, mentioned KBS at 0900
UT ... but program was NOT // 7275 kHz. Nice proper S=9+15dB or -58dBm
signal near Tokyo capital remote unit.

I guess some new transmitter (and antenna?) equipment at Kimjae-KOR has
been erected and tested now with special programs "now and then".
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 26/28)

Kimjae transmitting center was reported recently on refurbishing or repair
work schedule ? Signal heard downunder in Australia remote unit.

Oh yes, KBS 6155 Kimjae is N O T on air,
seemingly but on 6095 kHz instead ?

Scheduled 6155 0800-1000 44,45 KIM 100 0 Jpn KOR KBS

At 0953 UT heard "Happy Birthday to you ..." song ...
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 26)

Due to unforeseen maintenance at Kimjae Transmission Center KBS World
Radio announce a temporary change of the broadcast time for our Chinese
Service and English Service to China. The current broadcast time
at 1130-1330 UT will be temporarily changed to 2200-2400 UT:

2200-2300 6095 KIM 250 kW 290 deg to China in Chinese, now 1130-1230
2300-2400 6095 KIM 250 kW 290 deg to China in English, now 1230-1330

This inevitable change will be effective from Oct. 19 for about 2 months.
The exact date the broadcast will return to its original time will be
announced in the near future.

KOREA REP/BULGARIA/U.K. The 2200-2230 UT relay via Woofferton on 3955
kHz didn't materialize last night. The TX was switched off at 2200 UT at
the end of the French transmission. I wasn't surprised - a recent
Listener's Lounge edition had already indicated in a reply to a listener
that the relay in English would not be present in the B-14 season.

As expected the 1900 UT transmission (on 5885 and 5900) is German, not
English. (5900 being a late change from 5935 kHz)

[before on Oct 20] There's a couple of entries for B-14 here of interest
to European listeners.

First the re-instatement of the Woofferton relay for English at 2200-2230
UT on 3955 kHz - missing in the A-14 season. This has consistently
provided strong reception in previous seasons so is very welcome.

Second is the apparent addition of English at 1900-2000 UT on 5935 and
5885 kHz via Bulgaria. That would be very welcome news - but I wonder if
it is an error and this should be showing as German. For past seasons,
both French and German have had two one hour airings in the European
evening, but this schedule shows only one hour in German for B-14, and
1900 would be the expected time for the second transmission.

RUSSIA Russia switched to winter time.

On Sunday, October 26th, the last time Russia switched to winter time - at
2:00 am local time, the arrow was transferred back one hour. This
procedure took place for the first time after three years from the date of
cancellation of winter time in 2011.

Thus, in the country again appeared eleven time zones instead of nine. In
the five regions of Russia did not translate back arrow. At summer time
remained Udmurtia, Kamchatka, Chukotka, Kemerovo and Samara Oblast.

With the transition to a permanent winter, Russia has become closer to
Europe - Moscow time now differs from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is
not at +4 and +3 hours. New members of the Federation - Republic of Crimea
and the federal city of Sevastopol - also went to Moscow time.

Russia still remains in the winter time /

Law abolishing the transition to winter time, introduced in the summer of
2011 on the initiative of the then president, Dmitry Medvedev. After the
entry into force of the Law of the Russian time was ahead of the curve
geographical time zone by one hour, and in some areas - for two.

9955 RFI Chinese via Taiwan at 11-13 UT seems to be gone, Oct 26 no
longer audible QRMing WRMI at 1105 and 1230 chex; but where is it now?
Can't be listed in HFCC, say the ChiCom.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Oct 26)

9900 on Oct 28 at 1255 UT, poor signal in Chinese, presumably RFI via
TAIWAN at 11-13 UT, new frequency ex-9955 kHz per Ivo Ivanov. For the past
four months we had been trying to get RFI to move off 9955 kHz where it
was QRMing WORLD OF RADIO and numerous other programs on WRMI. (Now,
'Angloparade' music on 9955 kHz is CCI-free.)

While there ought to be some clear frequencies in the 9.9s, this one is
not so good for RFI: low audible heterodyne since Taiwan can't maintain
frequency precision, and weaker station underneath. No Taiwan listings
allowed in HFCC thanks to ban by the ChiCom, but HFCC B-14 shows the other
9900 kHz must be IBB in Pashto and Dari at 1130-1330 UT, 250 kW,
70degr from KUWAIT. This is likely to carry on to RFI's target China.
Taiwan goes off at 1300* UT uncovering the other, very poor with stingers
in news(?)
