GERMANY Germany left LW at midnight, on Dec 31, 2014.
24.00 LT CET Central European Time (UT+1 hr).

It was a disapointing event, I recorded the last hours at TOH

23:57 CET: 177 was already off, they stopped 5 min earlier as the German
forum reported

207 without audio, but it had its carrier still on, and for a few seconds
before 00:00 CET the audio returned. After that it shut down and Iceland
came in well.

153 continued until around 00:25 CET, I read that in the German forum, as
I got tired of waiting.

There was no special "good bye", a pitty when considering how long LW has
been used.

- Around 11:05 LT/CET this morning I checked 153 and was surprised hearing
Russian, then French followed, it turned out that Romania broadcasted snow
heights for tourists.

Romania now is well audible, also a clean Iceland on 207, and a *very*
weak Medi on 171 Iceland on 207 is stronger during day time, despite its
lower power, the tx is on the east side, so only a water path. During the
night 189 is stronger.

Now only Europe1 on 183 remains as the "Lux-Effect generator" that I hear
on the control signals below 150 kHz

BTW: I heard these control signals also *very* weak on the Thailand rx

GERMANY "There was no special +good bye«, a pitty when considering how

Haette man ja vorher aufzeichnen koennen, so viel Pflichtbewusstsein

GERMANY German LW station closures at midnight

DLF LW 153 went OFF for ever on Dec 31 UTC-wise
late - switched OFF around 23.27 UT / 00.27 /-.28 CET.

DLF LW 207 went OFF sharp at 23.00 UTC,
before 22.55 til 22.59 UT only empty strong carrier still on air,
here in southern Germany with S=9+55dB or -18dBm powerhouse,

but after 22.59 UT heard again DLF program audio of
only 6 ! seconds, end music part of "Ode To Joy."
one second later tx Aholming switched off for ever.

An era in Germany's broadcast services on longwave ended now.

Deutschlandsender Longwave 240 kHz started on Dec 20, 1927 !
via Koenigs Wusterhausen Zeesen txing center.

I heard often Deutscher Versuchssender Hamburg Moorfleet 151 kHz
on our first after-WW-II tube radio
from Christmas 1953 year to 30 Nov 1962,

later in Dec 1962: DLF moved to Mainflingen 151 kHz - which was
a rebuilt former German Reichspost / Nazi Propaganda company
Reichspropaganda Soldatensender hardware,

on March 1967 DLF Donebach on 151 kHz, later even channel 155 kHz,
later 2 kHz down ITU spacing to 153 kHz from late 1987/Febr 1988
til today.

LW band around 01.25 UT Jan 1st
ROU 153 S=9+25dB -51dBm  {see also item under Norway... wb.}
F 162 S=9+20 -54 seemingly much reduced power at nighttime!
MRC 171 S=9+10 -66

D 183 S=9+30 -46 split frequ Europe-1,
rebuilt collapsed antenna in 2014,
and alignement to new 180 kHz ITU channel will take longer time.

ISL 189 S=7 -80
GB 198 S=9+5 -68 and some strange Luxembourg effect audio sound
always difficult audio in southern Germany.
ISL 207 S=8 -74
MCO/F 216 nothing at nighttime break.
POL 225 S=9+20 -52
LUX 234 S=9+10 -64
DEN 243 nothing on air during nighttime.
IRL 252 S=9+10 -63
{but Uwe from SoEaAsia reports also Tajikistan strong carrier,
but low modulation at Ashgabat there}

BUL 261 longwave from Sofia Vakarel ceased service for ever Dec 31.
CZE 270 nothing, Czech radio from Topolna switches off before 0125 UT
check.
BLR 279 S=9+10dB -64dBm probably increased power again now,
after their power limitations last year...

Reminder - German LW station closures of DLF / DLR tonight.
It seems that the sequence of events was as follows:

177 kHz: The closure advice they used to play throughout the December at
xx59 was played for a last time at 2254 UT. Back to programming for a few
more seconds and transmitter off at 2255 UT.

207 kHz: Audio off at 2255 UT, carrier off at 2300 UT.

153 kHz: Audio off at 2255 UT, back on at 2256 UT. I strongly suspect that
a silence detector switched to a back-up source, as it happened at the
closure of the Reichenbach transmitter, too. Transmitter finally off after
2325 it seems, at least I now really hear no other program audio than
Antena Satelor Brasov Brod Romania anymore.
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Jan 1, 2015)

153 kHz still at overtime at 2300 - 2327 UTC Dec 31, 2014.

MEZ/CET geschaltet, via VAC Audacity Recorder zeigt kein Audio Programm
Signal mehr an.

nur 6 Sekunden vor 00.00 MEZ/CET noch einige Takte der "Ode To Joy"
Euro Hymne,

Ja, Goetz Alsmann - immer bunt gemischt, eher kein Format Radio

Sekunden Audio Zufuehrung
der EuroHymne, S=9+55dB oder -18dBm in DARC Amberg Oberpfalz aufgenommen,
Bandbreite hatte ich 14 kHz eingestellt.

1 ! Sekunde spaeter war der Sender Aholming dann off the air,
- weg -
- abgeschaltet,
- tot.

151 kHz Hamburg Moorfleet Musik-Versuchssender, danach

{dank Eurer Logs bis 00.27 / 00.28 MEZ/CET Jan 1, 2015}
-62dBm hier in Stuttgart gemessen.

(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 1, 2015)

Listening via the Twente SDR unit in the Netherlands:
Both 177 and 207 kHz signed off at 2255 UT, but 153 kHz stayed on a little
longer with National Anthem and "Ode To Joy".

Listening earlier between 2045 and 2100 UT: All three on, 153 // to
207 kHz with apparent entertainment program (could hear audience
laughter, sorry my German is extremely limited.) Good signals into
Twente on both frequencies. 177 kHz had more music, with some slopover
from Europe 1 Saarlouis on 183 kHz (depending on what was being
broadcast at the moment.)

The 207 kHz signoff revealed Iceland on the frequency // to 189 kHz.

Elsewhere after 2300 UT:
France still going with a solid signal on 162 kHz.
Medi 1 Morocco fair on 171 kHz.
Europe 1 solid on 183 kHz.
Iceland fair on both 189 and 207 kHz.
BBC Radio 4 solid on 198 kHz.
Nothing on 216 kHz {RMC nighttime off}.
Poland solid on 225 kHz,
as was RTL Luxembourg on 234 kHz.
Nothing on 243 kHz.
Ireland good on 252 kHz with presumed Algeria undeneath.
Nothing on 261 kHz.
Czech Radio Topolna with surprisingly good signal on 270 kHz; did they
crank the power back up?
And on 279 kHz, poor signal from Belarus with something else occasionally
audible underneath, could it be Turkmenistan?

At 2350 UT now hearing a good signal from Romania on 153 kHz, so
Deutschlandfunk now gone. I can see what was meant by the two stations
having a bad nighttime clash.
(Stephen Luce-TX-USA, dxld Dec 31)

DLF LW 153 went OFF for ever on Dec 31 UTC-wise
late - switched OFF around 23.27 UT / 00.27 /-.28 CET.

Guess what happened at 0400 UT Jan 1st 2015:
The control system of the Donebach transmitter switched over to day
pattern and thus keyed the transmitter back on! By 0630 UT Jan 1st they
had killed the signal, but it seems that it was again on air for at least
a full hour.

What happened otherwise: Obviously at 2255 UT Dec 31 the Deutschlandfunk
control room at Cologne switched the longwave feed to silence after
playing out the closure advice one more time, and this triggered silence
detection at both Donebach and Aholming, switching to another audio source
(most likely possibility is Astra 1N).

In case someone wonders: There was of course no farewell broadcast or
things like this. Only a few sentences in the news block of the
Deutschlandfunk media politics programme, and already this was almost more
than one could expect.

The odd 2255 time was a bad foul for attempts to cover the moment without
bothering to record the full evening. Some clips of degraded quality
appeared in the discussion at

<http://radioforum.foren.mysnip.de/read.php?8773,1148722,page=47>

To fulfil a possible expectation of personal remarks: A programme of
special interest, broadcast on 177 kHz only (which, by the way, was on air
for 94 years, disregarding the frequency and site changes), had been
terminated already 20 years ago. In eastern Germany Deutschlandradio has a
pretty comprehensive FM coverage. And the daytime format of
Deutschlandradio Kultur, now trying to fish for younger audiences with
college radio music, is not my cup of coffee anyway.

On 153 kHz Romania is, unsurprisingly, now audible all day long here, more
or less as strong as Allouis. No trace of Norway whatsoever, as some
people were expecting. (But this transmitter is still on air? Just to make
sure...)

And 207 kHz is quite interesting: It seems one can go so far to attach it
to Iceland now, because it seems to come in regularly. Of course it is far
from being a powerhouse, but it appears to be noticeably stronger than the
189 kHz sister transmitter in western Iceland.
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Jan 1, 2015)

183 / 180 kHz longwave.

- Tschuess,

all over Europe.

Please notice, that you can rent airtime for only 15EUR an hour for
occasional broadcasts; for broadcasts on a regular basis, please ask for
conditions. Remember that some hours, especially during the weekends, may
be booked quickly!

Radio Mi Amigo will be on air next Saturday; they will be glad for
reports.

We plan to be on air from Dec. 31st, later in the afternoon, for a longer
period of time, to make some final tests and checking the new security
equipment that shuts down the transmitter in cases of emergency.

Again we ask for your reports how you can receive us, and how you evaluate
quality of our modulation - thank you in advance.

KOREA D.P.R. KCBS Pyongyang 11680 // 9665 kHz - Missing.

Daily I listen 11680 and 9665 for the KCBS Pyongyang domestic service as
both frequencies are well received at great strength here in Sydney. For
many days these usually very reliable services have been missing.

I enjoy the ambience added by listening to KCBS via shortwave (I can also
"cheat" and receive KCBS via C-Band satellite - but the studio perfect
audio lacks that subversive cold war quality that shortwave adds to the
listening experience). So tonight I have reverted to using 2350 remotely
via a Perseus in Nagoya (Japan) - this frequency is operating as expected.
(Mark Fahey-NSW-AUS, Dec 29 dxld)

NORWAY 153 longwave from Ingøy far northern Norway.

Thought that the switch off of DLF Donebach might give us a chance to log
the 153 kHz transmitter based on the island Ingøy up in the extreme north
of Norway. Alas, no trace here this morning, only Romania on 153 kHz.
Checked some remote Perseus in Sweden and Finnland: Only Romania observed,
not a beep from Norway. Was Norway's longwave outlet switched off too

re Norway longwave 153 kHz from Ingøy.

Coverage area is Svalbard, the Barents- and Norwegian Sea and northern
Scandinavia, so most of the effect goes in a northerly direction. So I
think you have to wait for special conditions, before you can listen to
this transmitter. This 100 kW station is the last remaining NRK AM/LW-
transmitter in mainland Norway.

History report of July 2006:

153 kHz Ingøy -- A BIT OF BACKGROUND By Bernt Erfjord.
Ingøy Kringkaster (The Ingøy tx station) is equipped with a new 100 kW
Telefunken tx remotely controlled from Norway's AM control center at
Kvitsoy. The antenna mast is among the tallest manmade constructions in
Europe, and definitely the tallest on Norwegian soil. It is a 362 meter
high steel construction. Including stays it weighs more than 300 tons.
Surrounding the mast, 44 km of copper cables have been spread to form the
best possible earthing. The station has its own 600 kW generator to
provide sufficient power to both the station and all the homes on Ingøy
during power failures from the mainland. In rough winters this is not
uncommon. The total cost of Ingøy Kringkaster is estimated around
25 million NOK (2.75 million USD).

Ingøy Kringkaster, like the rest of the Norwegian AM txs carries the NRK
Europakanalen programme. This is a mixture of domestic channels P1, P2 and
P3, a daily hour of Radio Norway International, and some exclusive weather
forecasts. Ingøy Kringkaster will include programmes from NRK Finnmark in
Vadso. The old mediumwave tx in Vadso on 702 kHz (20 kW) was closed by the
end of 2000.

Ingøy is located at 71 06'N, 23 50'E. It is almost as far north as North
Cape, which is 65 km to the east of Ingøy. Ingøy was an important trading
port in the 16th century and is home to the world's northernmost manned
lighthouse, Fruholmen Fyr. This is also an important meteorological
station. It holds the Norwegian record with 257 days in a year with gale
force winds or stronger.

Ingøy is part of Masoy Kommune (Community of Masoy). The total population
of Ingøy is only 40-50 persons. Up to WWII, Ingøy had its own coastal
radio station, Ingøy Radio, located not far from the current LW-site.
Ingøy Radio was destroyed during the war and not repaired.

The building of a new high powered AM-station in northern Norway is the
result of decades of lobbying from pressure groups. The 1978 Geneva freq
plan brought changes to the usage of medium and longwave in Norway. Until
then a few highpowered txs and a large number of low powered fillers were
used to cover the country. By the mid-70's the network of VHF-transmitters
basically had replaced AM for domestic broadcasting, and the new freq plan
eliminated all the AM fillers and boosted power of a few remaining
allocations, which were primarily intended for reaching remote parts of
the country, neighbouring countries and the oceans surrounding the
country.

The first superpower station was built, Kvitsoy with its 1.2 megawatt tx
on 1314 kHz. Then NRK decided not to pursue their usage of AM, and
gradually closed 216 kHz in Oslo and 153 kHz in Tromso without replacing
them with the proposed new high power plants. Pressure for a better radio
coverage of the Arctic oceans where Norwegian fishery is still an
important industry have never ended, and eventually NRK, together with the
Ministry of Fisheries, entered a long term agreement with Norwegian txion
facilities provider Norkring to rent txion time on a new longwave tx in
the county of Finnmark.

Stage one of this plan was completed in spring 2000 with the old 675 kHz
tx at Bodo being replaced by a new 20 kW unit on the island of Rost
improving reception along the northwestern coast, and since 1st October
2000 Ingøy has improved the coverage of the Barents Sea immensely. Ingøy
Kringkaster provides a daytime signal almost reaching Spitsbergen.
(Spitsbergen has its own mediumwave tx on 1485 kHz).

The usage of 153 kHz elsewhere in Europe and Asia will naturally affect
reception possibilities of Ingøy in these areas, but a good antenna and a
fair portion of luck could bring unexpected results! The lack of longwave
broadcasting in North America should make it possible to receive the
signal at least along the east coast of Canada and the USA.

Nice to have them back! 9620 kHz providing some very nice armchair

Parenthetically, REE is proving a point that has been made times through
DXLD and other forums - that a station can get along very nicely and
maintain a nominal, but useful presence on the shortwave bands by
targeting each region with just one well chosen frequency and properly
maintained and adequately powered transmitters. REE is using four
frequencies, each targeting a different corner of the world, for four
hours on weekdays and eight on weekends. Bravo, REE.

SUDAN [1006 Hz jamming stn] / USA / VATICAN STATE 15550, on Dec 29 at
1543 UT, continuous tone jamming mixing with R. Dabanga and USB WJHR, so
the Sudanese do not find CCI from WJHR alone to be sufficient jamming over
there, in fact, probably inaudible. Dabanga is via VATICAN STATE.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Dec 30)

15550 Noted S=8-9 whistle tone signal as jamming purpose by Sudanese
govt. in Omdurman against NGO organization of PNW/FPU Radio Dabanga. At
1620 UT on Jan 1, strong 1006 Hertz whistle tone like measurement tone of
USSR era heard on both lower/upperside band. Backlobe Santa Maria di
Galeria Vatican State signal of Radio Dabanga was weak into southerly
Germany, no Dabanga program content could be traced here so far.

15550usb After 1630 UT Jan 1 heard also the co-channel stn WJHR on remote
NY and MA US units. Funny 'unpleasant' pastor between crying and laughing
in English language, strange behavior in European ears... Some S=9 signal
in peaks, like -71dBm. Covered the small band range between 15549.880 and
15553 kHz range, visible in screen browser.

SUDAN 9505 Voice of Africa, Al Aitahab Omdurman, on 2 Jan at 0627 UT -
open carrier at tune in until brief HoA musical intro at 0630 UT, ID in
presumed Amharic over Bob Marley's Africa Unite, a few announcements into
a North African vocal at 0634 UT. Feature about Angola from 0638 until
0644 UT, followed by song Elleyaba Addis Ababa. S7+ with good modulation.

Too bad their English program doesn't start until 0800 UT, when the signal
is a weak carrier here. + 2 Jan 1921-1932* UT - Surprised to find with a
decent S6 signal in presumed Hausa program, traditional music selection,
clear Voice of Africa ID, monologue with a few mentions of Nigeria.

Closing announcement at 1932 UT, open carrier until 1934 UT. I will have
to try and catch the listed 1730-1830 UT English program over the weekend.

TANZANIA [ZANZIBAR] 11735.000 ZBC Dole, on 2 Jan at 1942 UT - Quranic
recitation at tune in, followed at 1945 UT by a long 10 minute traditional
vocal, followed by a call and response that sounded very Quranic in
intonation but had accompanying drums toward the end. 5+1 time pips at
1959 UT, followed by news in presumed Swahili. Good S6 signal but choppy
modulation that doesn't appear to be propagation related.

THAILAND 5875 R. Thailand, Udorn Thani, at 1114 UT just caught the very
end of the VT pgm, then chime IS, EG pgm outro, chime IS again, then usual

starting w/sked. Fairly good. 31 Dec.

UGANDA 4975.965 UBC Kampala, on 2 Jan at 2242 UT - very nice program of
back-to-back lively Soukous songs by Koffi, Extra Musica, DJ Scott. Male
announcer with quckk ID and TC at 2259 UT and right back to the music, now
a blend of Highlife, Afro-Hop: Flavour, 2Face Ibidia, Artquake, Popcaan.
Nice S7-8 signal but down a bit to S6 by 2315 UT tune out.

17775.011 KVOH Spanish service logged at 1525 UT Jan 2, phone-in program

17770 kHz Channel Africa program in Swahili via Sentec Meyerton
installation, latter S=7 audio into NoWeUSA coast posts.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 2)

New schedule of KVOH. On 1 January 2015 KVOH introduced a new schedule.
According to their website
<http://kvoh.net/broadcast-schedule/>
they now "worldcast" on Mondays to Fridays (US-days) in Spanish 1400-2000
UT on 17775 kHz, and additionally in English and Spanish 0000-0500 UT
(Tue-Sat) on 9975 kHz. On weekends (US), KVOH continues to broadcast in
English from 0230-0500 UT (Sun / Mon) on 9975 kHz.

The new customers are already known to short waves listeners: Rick Wiles
is already on WRMI Okeechobee and Dr. James Planck has since about 2002
promoted his own short wave station KIMF which did not yet materialize.
Planck's International Missions Fellowship was also involved in HRMI Radio
Misiones Internacionales, Comayagueela, which broadcast on short wave for
some years beginning in 1996 until maybe 2011. It was irregularly heard,
originally 5898 kHz, later 5010 kHz, and finally 3340 kHz.
(Prof. Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, ntt via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 3)

9955 on Dec 28 at 2010 UT, WRMI with African fill music instead of
Brother Scare, an incomparable improvement in programming (BS is still on
9980 kHz WWCR, 9370 kHz WWRB and several other WRMI transmitters). 2019 UT
to 'Ode to Joy' variations on piano, 2021 UT talk about the Council of
Europe in English, French, German, then rap version in English;
at 2035 UT the usual polka.

It's beyond me why with 11 transmitters available, Jeff would want to keep
any BS at all on what should be the shining flagship of Radio Miami
International, the B-System of 9955 kHz! But this respite is surely just
an anomaly.

USA/CHINA/U.K. The following essay was sent to me by Radio Tirana's Mrs
Drita Cico, who got it from Glenn Hauser. I found it so interesting that I
want to share it with you.

First a few comments of my own.

I have always been wondering why giant USA has got such a weak
international ether media voice. In the past I found VOA often irritating,
with a bragging and superficial presentation of news and views - where the
only bright point was the "Music USA" program. In contrast the BBC was
sofisticated, informative, and contrary to VOA conveying the impression
that this broadcaster is serious, believing in its task and message.

VOA gave me the feeling of being a poor actor not really confident on the
stage... Later China Radio International has proved that even a communist
regime (although highly reformed) can produce and provide good
international radio programs - and the American misery has become even
deeper...

With this I leave you to read the text of the essay, in case you have got
an interest in the major issues of international radio.
- A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

VIETNAM 5975 / 7285 Voice of Vietnam announced in Listener's Letterbox
on 31 December that they will be discontinuing the English broadcasts on
7285 kHz at 1100 and 1500 UT with effect from 1 January 2015. No mention
was made as to why, or to whether the other language transmissions between
1030 and 1600 UT on the Hanoi transmitter on 7285 kHz are also being
discontinued.

I guess !
- maybe refurbishing work to replace the very old hardware gear by
new BBEF Made in China transmitter?
