ASCENSION ISL/UAE/U.K./USA BBC relay changes

The Ascension relay seems to be taking a break on Sundays
since 7 June 2015.

The following transmissions have been moved from Ascension to other sites
on Sundays ONLY; still transmitted from Ascension on other week days.

Starting 7 June 2015, acc. to the HFCC file dated 9 June 2015.

12015 0800-1000 R Japan in Japanese: USA-GREENVILLE on Sundays
17640 1200-1230 BBC French: UAE-DHABAYYA on Sundays
17640 1600-1700 BBC English: G-WOOFFERTON on Sundays
17780 1400-1430 BBC Hausa: UAE-DHABAYYA on Sundays
17830 1600-1700 BBC English: G-WOOFFERTON on Sundays
21630 1200-1230 BBC French: UAE-DHABAYYA on Sundays
21630 1400-1430 BBC Hausa: UAE-DHABAYYA on Sundays

Similarly:
15790 0500-0700 BBC in Arabic now UAE-DHABAYYA Tuesdays-Wednesdays,
OMA-A'Seela on other days, ex-daily, eff. 9 June.

In an unrelated (?) move, the BBC transmission in Pushto 0300-0330 15310
kHz has been moved from Yerevan to Nakhon Sawan, effective 8 June 2015.

Site moves are frequently registered by Babcock and may be reverted to the
original schedule at any time, which is often published in HFCC a few days
later. So maybe these site changes even have affected only last Sunday
(7 June). Time will tell.

AUSTRALIA 2368.469 Only tiny weak threshold signal of -98dBm heard

To compare ABC Northern Territory VL8A Alice Springs 4835 kHz that

Seemingly a music request program in Greek language was in progress,

BOLIVIA 6134.826 kHz ein Mordssignal, viele Jahre habe ich nicht mehr
solch ein Signal aus Bolivien gehoert. Um genau 0150 UT Ansage Santa Cruz.
S=9+15dB durchgehend, auch in den Spitzen +20 bis +25dB;

aber S=9+15dB auch aus Bolivien 5952.472 kHz Emisoras PioXII, Siglo

BOLIVIA 5952.4 {.472} Radio Pio Doce - Siglo Veinte, at 0120-0145 UT
on June 14, a woman announcer joined by a male announcer in Spanish
language hosting a program of rustic Bolivian vocals. Some long talks by
the couple with laughter talking about some of the music and the
performers. Fair.

6134.8 {.826} Radio Santa Cruz - Santa Cruz, at 0112-0126 UT on June 14,
nice program of vocals with several IDs ("Radio Santa Cruz,la premera...")
noted between musical selections. Fair to good signal.

6155.1 Radio Fides - La Paz, at 0024-0108 UT on June 14, program of
lively vocals selections with a man announcer in Spanish language talking
with announcements and station ID at 0032 UT. Poor to fair signal although
seemingly improving.
(Rich D'Angelo-PA-USA, DXplorer June 14)

BOLIVIA 6155.15 R. Fides with nice signal on May 26 and 27th into
Perseus site in Central Germany on SA beverage from 2308 and 2326 UT (best
signal) tune respectively. Nice signal, but not as good as R. Santa Cruz
(see below). SINPO 34433 with some adj channel splash. Also hrd here at
home but with much weaker signal - SINPO 25332 but here CRI was not a
problem. Lots of talking and vague ID info - however I was able to
correlate the program theme music with that hrd on the Internet live audio
feed for R. Fides. Transmitter had some noticeable distortion (hrd from
Central Germany only).

6025 R Patria Nueva hrd June 2nd from 0120 UT tune from Central Germany
Perseus site w/ SA beverage. Strong QRM from CRI on 6020 kHz that made
readability quite difficult. SINPO 32432. When CRI was in speech mode,
readability improved, however when CRI was playing music, very difficult
to copy Bolivia here. Program appeared to be a male ancr talking to
callers with periodic music, like a request program.

6134.85 {.826} R. Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz on June 10 booming into Perseus
site in Central Germany on a SA beverage from 0004 UT tune. Freq ID's by
both male and YL ancrs, female vocal at 0009.5 UT. Time, news bulletin by
man and time at 0013-15 UT. Another female vocal at 0015-20 UT. ID, QTH
and time by man 0020 UT fol by male ancr with news or talk concerning
Peru, President Morales mentioned often as well. Male vocal at 0025 UT.
Live and recorded com'ls and "Radio Santa Cruz" ID jingles 0036.5-41.5 UT.
SINPO 45444 - armchair lvl with a noticeable but not obnoxious xmtr hum.
This site has a propagation tunnel into Bolivia!

Probably via Kashi-Kashgar or Urumqi or Xian bcast center site. wb.

CHINA 17660, June 11 at 1325 UT, *CNR8 *in Korean with VG signal, at
least as strong and less fading than the close-to-transpolar CRI East
Turkistanis {Kashi-Kashgar or Urumqi} on 17560, 17630, 17650 kHz, so I
think it's from eastern China, or south China {or refurbished Xian bcast
center site?}, as the domestic service in Korean could be aimed toward
NoEa China about the same azimuth onward and USward; and Solsticial
overnight MUF holding up this high. It's a new service, site not yet known
and not registered with HFCC. After 1400 UT it should be colliding with
Saudi in French.

The referenced paper at

<http://www.strategicstudiesinstitute.army.mil/pdffiles/pub989.pdf>

provides more insights, although one really needs to see over its writing
style.

The head of the Nigerian Muslim and the Sultan of Sokoto, represented by
Alhaji Ahmed Oga, the Andoma of Doma, urged the organisation to employ
quality staff for quality service delivery.

"I have no doubt in my mind that the stations will compete favourably with
their foreign counterparts like VOA, BBC and CNN, among others.

"I can assure the Muslims and Nigerians that another innovation in the
area of radio communication and television has come on board," he said.
The Sultan, however, urged the Muslim Ummah to cooperate with the stations
in order to achieve the aims and objectives for setting them up.

He in earnest believes that VOA, BBC, CNN would cooperate with a Salafist
movement? This probably explains a lot.

Also of interest are their TV transmissions. They use two different beams
on Eutelsat West 7 A, on 11595 and 11641 MHz. Lyngsat gives no clue about
the uplink provider, which may be the provider of the shortwave relays as
well, but shows an interesting bed fellowship in the 11595 MHz mux: It
already carries the encrypted TV / radio service of Bundeswehr (German
forces). It is interesting in itself that they are on this West Africa
beam.

GREECE Voice of Greece returns to shortwave.

Gradually come the information for the resumption of individual radio
stations of ERT as coordinators working intensively to prepare the new
transmissions. Resuming the short wave program "The Voice of Greece", also
known as ERA 5 aimed at expatriates is also its way. The program of
Greece's Voice will include newscasts every hour to broadcast the first
program while there will also be two programs specifically aimed at
expatriates, but the exact times have not been announced.

The Voice of Greece programs will be broadcast via shortwave from
facilities in Avlis, which the previous government's Finance Ministry had
tried to sell as scrap. The facilities remained intact thanks to the
former employees, so no technical problems remain. The programs continued
to be broadcast thanks to former ERT employees from Athens and
Thessaloniki. Continuing Greece Voice for the last two years was being
observed and followed by lovers of shortwave broadcasting enthusiasts. The
frequencies of the Voice of Greece to Europe will probably be the same,

Isra Miraj Nabi Muhammad was actually on May 16th, as my Indonesian
calendar shows, so it seems that the ceremony mentioned was on the night
before that date.

Merauke, as you certainly know, is on East Indonesia Time, which is
UTC+9hrs, so the time mentioned in your log would have been 8:30 in the
evening. This makes sense because traditionally in Indonesia a night is
considered to be part of the following day. A good website for an
Indonesian calendar is also

<http://portalseven.com/calendar/Holidays_Indonesia.jsp?year=2015>

where also some explanations as to the nature of these holidays are given.
By the way, the month of Ramadan begins this year on or around June 18th
(depending on sighting of the moon) and lasts until July 16th. Thus Id (or
Eid)-Ul-Fitri falls on July 17 & 18 (Fri-Sat), making this a long holiday
weekend.

Storm/typhoon Dolphin slammed into us Sunday. The radio building and the

We lost part of our church roof, it seems we had the full furry of the

At this point, we do not know when we can use the church. It all depends

NIGERIA Voice of Nigeria. Following observations by Thorsten Hallmann in
dxld yg, noting that VoN seemed to be operating at variance to previous
schedules.

I tried to nail down a schedule of Voice of Nigeria, but this is not an
easy task. But however, here's a fragment

0600-0700 Hausa 7255 // 9689.9 kHz Abuja
0700-0730 French 7255 Abuja? Programme feed from Lagos via Abuja?
0730-0800 Hausa 7255 Abuja
0800-? Unid language 7255 kHz - likely not Hausa, something sounding
"soft", female announcer this week, too weak to identify, though tried
several remote tuners ... 9689.9 kHz doesn't seem to return for 0800-0900
UT Hausa as observed in the past.

What's going on in Lagos/Ikorodu? 15120kHz +Livestream not observed in the
morning. In the afternoon, the livestream is on irregularly but only until
-1600 UT, then into dead air. From 1500-1600 UT there's the block of
newscasts in Kiswahili, Yoruba, Igbo, Arabic. 15120 kHz has been on air
sporadically for that over the past week, but not observed this week.

Ivo reported 1400-1445 UT English and 1445-1500 UT French on 9690 kHz on
May 27, this certainly Lagos, announcing in fact 9690 kHz and from 15120
kHz from 1500 UT in the French service. The speaker stops in between as if
he has something else on the paper or read out something wrong. However,
this is yet a single report.

1800-2000 English 7255 // 15120 kHz DRM mode, Abuja
2000-2100 Hausa 9689.9 kHz Abuja
2100-2200 Hausa 11769.9 kHz Abuja
... seems to be on as usual, but more or less irregular ...

It would be VERY interesting if anybody with DRM receiver could try to
check 15120 kHz at 1955 UT+, if they read out a schedule for the English
broadcasts!
(Thorsten Hallmann-D, dxld June 13)

I have confirmed that the evening transmission of V of Nigeria in English
is now 1800-1930 UT on 7255 kHz and 15120 kHz(latter in DRM mode). There's
excellent reception of 15120 kHz in DRM at my location {in U.K.}.

Thorsten/everyone
Voice of Nigeria signed-on on 15120 kHz in DRM today, Sunday 14 June, at
1755 UT announcing frequencies of 7255 kHz and 15120 kHz (DRM), and
announced the following programme line-up for the transmission:

1800 News
1815 Reflections
1820 Weekend Magazine
1845 The Villa
1900 Sports Round up
1915 World of the Arts
1930 Sign-off

Excellent DRM reception with SNR of 25db and no dropouts.

No schedule was given, just the sign-off announcement which said "... join
us again tomorrow same time Sunday at eight hours UT..." (I think just a
slip of speech to say 8 hours UT rather than 18 hours UT). [June 13]
(Alan Roe-UK, BrDXC-UK June 14)

Thanks a lot! "8 hours UT" would fit well, as Hausa is ending then and
7255 kHz service continuing.
(Thorsten Hallmann-D, dxld / BrDXC-UK June 14)

More Voice of Nigeria update.
Today another little change: French section at 0700-0728 UT was // 7254.95
and 9689.9 kHz approx., after that 31mband went off. Announced was 7255
kHz, but times inintelligble. The latter freq. can also be heard in
Europe, the former on US remote receivers.

The earlier sign-off for English would make sense, if they'd have
installed also a French segment in the evening... Mon-Fri only however,
there was the main newscast "60 minutes" 19-20 UT, either that's "30
minutes" now, or rescheduled or abandoned. There was an afternoon edition
of this also, from Lagos/Iko in contrast to the evening one, but this
seems be disappeared.
(Thorsten Hallmann-D, dxld June 15)

[later] Latest update today 15 June - The program "Sixty Minutes" is now
aired Monday-Friday at 1800-1900 UT. At 1930 UT, VoN signed off in English
on 15120 kHz/DRM announcing that they were handing over to the Fulfulde
service. There was a few seconds of Fulfulde before the transmitter was
cut, but no other indications for length of the following service or which
frequencies.

still going at last check at 1328 UT; playing EZL pop songs in English
("I'll Still be Loving You," etc.); frequent brief IDs - "Wantok FM 96.3
MHz. Good Times. Great music"; almost fair.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, DXplorer June 4)

5020.0, SIBC on June 11. AM pleased today to find that at the end of the
National Anthem (1204 UT) they did in fact start the audio feed of Wantok

norm. Still being heard at 1403 UT.

USA VOA chief threatens to 'kill' other U.S. broadcast stations if ...

<http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/in-the-loop/wp/2015/06/04/voa-chief-threatens-to-kill-other-u-s-broadcast-stations-if/>

The infighting among the U.S. broadcasting units overseen by the
chronically troubled (some say dysfunctional) Broadcasting Board of
Governors seems to have gotten worse as Congress debates a bill that could
alter the units' mandates.

The broadcasters include the venerable Voice of America and the various
"Frees," such as Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia and Middle East
Broadcasting.

At a farewell editorial meeting last week, VOA director David Ensor, a
longtime CNN national security reporter who's leaving in a few weeks after
four years running the agency, accused unidentified folks at the "Frees"
of teaming up with members of Congress against the VOA.

There are apparently some at the "Frees" trying to get Congress to make
them stand alone under their own umbrella and change the VOA's mandate
from reporting news worldwide to a much narrower mandate of only reporting
events in this country. That's a move Ensor said would be a "death
sentence" for the VOA.

Outside of Africa, VOA shares coverage with one of the Radio Frees. The
bill would mean the VOA would cover only international and U.S. news (but
not news within each country in the local language.)

"... don't attack us and try to put us in this little narrow lane, to kill
us off," Ensor said, according to a tape recording of the meeting that's
floating on the Hill, "because if you do I am going to point out how much
rent you're paying on M Street, or on Connecticut Avenue." Yikes! (We're
told the rent on M Street for Radio Free Asia is about $3 million.) Radio
Free Europe's offices are in Prague with only a small support staff on
Connecticut Avenue Northwest.

"Instead, let's just all be reasonable and honest about what it is we do,"
he said, urging the other units to "stop telling politicians to try to put
us in a little lane that will kill us off, because I am going to come kill
you if you do that. You know, we're all going to make the arguments. You
haven't got clean hands."

Sounds like a dysfunctional family indeed. Kinda like Congress.

UZBEKISTAN {tentativelly} UNID Arabic? HoA like on 11650 kHz on June 8

Cat and mouse play, 11650 / 11645 kHz check on June 8th:

11650 Heard a TWR interval signal at end of bcast UNID Arabic like HOA

Seemingly this bcasts is now veiled in HFCC public database file ?

Or something went wrong on Babcock/TWR Africa edit on HFCC database.

noted an engineering test tone procedure on 11650 kHz at 0434 UT, with two
tones +/- 1002 Hertz each sideband, S=9+20dB in Germany. Could be rather
Sudan jammer 5 kHz up.

Now I see HFCC entry moved from 11645 to 11650 kHz, but PNW/FPU services
ARE STILL on 11645 on June 8th. Cat and mouse play so far ...

UZBEKISTAN/THAILAND [UNIDENTIFIED] 11540 / 11539.978 ...x969 kHz.

Unlike yesterday's test broadcast of Radio Farda programming, on May 27
from tune in at 1249 to 1331* UT, heard segments with open carrier, non-
stop test tone and test tone going on and off.

So today was just testing of the transmitter with no audio feed.
Needs more monitoring!

June 11, from tune in at 1338 to off at 1400* UT. The mystery continues of
who this is on 11540 kHz; non-stop selection of eclectic songs in English;
one with audio from the music video with Danny DeVito and One Direction
with song "Steal My Girl"; no announcements at all. Have been checking
here daily since May 27 and have heard nothing. Is this the start of
another round of testing the transmitter with various random audio feeds?

[later] What I recorded today via UNID on 11540 kHz, was an audio
broadcast taken from a music video. Please listen/watch the following:

This is a music video with Danny DeVito (American actor) talking and then
One Direction (music group) with song "Steal My Girl."

imagine Udorn Thani would run such programming to test their
transmitter/antenna.

A mystery!

re UNID on 11540 kHz. Dear Wolfgang,
11540kHz tx is also widely occupied frequency, it has estimated that the
transmission from the Central Asia (TJK or UZB) because the quality is
also bad.

re Korean Update - UNID on 11540 kHz. Thanks Ivo!
June 12, finally programming in Korean. Tuned in at 1306 UT till suddenly
off at 1400* UT; long, non-stop monologue by YL; a few times (1326 & 1339
UT) the audio cutting off and on for short period of time. Conditions
not as good as yesterday. Sei-ichi indicates today was a repeat of the
May 23 broadcast here (11540 kHz).

Aoki Nagoya list: - 11540 UnID 1300-1400 1234567 Korean Jun. 11-

Also thanks very much to my co-monitors, Sei-ichi Hasegawa and Mauno
Ritola, for their valuable feedback.

Re: 11540 once again, June 13.
That's very good in Japan. It almost sounds Korean or Japanese language to
me. Checked this outlet 11540 kHz this afternoon June 13:

Tuned-in around 1320 UT on 11539.978 kHz and signal wandered down on warm-
up to 11539.969 kHz around 1327 UT, checked the recording around 1333 UT
see attached .ogg format file. Signal in Nagoya Japan remote post S=9+20dB
or -54 dBm strength. I would say this is Korean language, one of these
veiled radio programs from likely Tashkent Uzbekistan towards the Korea
countries.
