ALBANIA 7470 Radio Tirana / IBB Kuwait co-channel clash.

Drita - perhaps you have noticed Glenn's and Wolfy's reports of the
IBB Kuwait having moved onto 7470 kHz channel on Dec 28, 2015, and this is
their registration:

7470 0100-0400 40E,41NW KWT 250kW 70deg 281215-260316 KWT IBB #17061

Maybe their theory was, that at 70deg from Kuwait it would not be heard in
North America, but obviously their antenna is radiating off the "back" as
well as off the "front". Shortwave works in often very strange ways !!!

ALBANIA 7470 Radio Tirana Shijak at 0230-0258 UT on Jan 13,
RECEPTION REPORT in 41 meterband,
from Belgium, United Kingdom, and remote monitoring posts in Eastern USA:

MA-US Massachusetts
KY-US Kentucky
MI-US Detroit Michigan

I woke up by alarm clock, little late tonight Jan 13th, about at 0231 UT,
and listened Shijak signal til Interval Signal played at 0258 UT
on Jan 13, - then TX Shijak switched OFF.

Radio Tirana English service towards North America was still in
progress at 0231 UT.

But sunspots / propagation from the EAST,
like Europe towards North America was very bad tonight,

how like DEEP WINTER RADIO SHORTWAVE CONDITION usually be.

These deep night shortwave signals will be better and increase,
- let's say during mid February.

The shortwave signals in 41 meterband w i t h i n USA were much
better and stronger tonight, - than these coming from Europe,
Near East Kuwait, and Kashgar western China origin,
see signal strength figures mentioned below.

Also RRI Radio Romania International and CRI broadcasts from Kashgar China
were bad and suffering on North American remote software defined radio
servers.

7469.979 kHz was the accurate measured frequency from Shijak site tonight.
Poor tiny Shijak signal of S=5 or tiny -92 dBm strength.

That 7470 kHz channel was totally covered by backlobe / sidelobe SW
signal, - from IBB US bcaster VoA Deewa from Kuwait {moved in here
requested to hfcc database on Dec 28, 2015} on 7470 kHz with S=8 or -74dBm
signal in western Europe monitoring posts and at East Coast area of North
America.

IBB requested VoA Radio Deewa for broadcast originally towards Afghanistan
and Pakistan target.

Compared signals in 41 meterband:

7570 USA WRMI Okeechobee, TOM religious English prayer,
             S=9+30dB -50dBm
7519.994 USA WWCR Nashville Tennessee, S=9+10dB -62dBm signal strength.
7504.809 USA very odd frequency signal, WRNO New Orleans LA En sermon,
powerhouse signal of S=9+35dB or -41dBm strength.
7460 MDA Payem Bahai program in Persian/Farsi language from relay site
(Kichinev) rather Grigoriopol Maiac in Pridnestrovie Moldova.
             Backlobe signal S=7-8
7395 ROU RRI Radio Romania International Bucharest Galbeni in French,
             S=9+10dB -64dBm
7385.003 USA WHRI Cypress Creek, En S=9+30 or -42dBm powerhouse.
7365 USA IBB Radio Marti bcast from Greenville NC-US,
in Spanish to Cuba, S=9+40 or -36dBm very strong signal.
7340 ROU RRI Radio Romania International Bucharest Tiganesti in
Romanian only S=7-8 suffering tonight propagation...
7330 CHN CRI China Radio International Kashgar, Chinese S=8-9 -72dBm
7315.003 USA WHRI Cypress Creek, English religious program, at signal
             level of S=9+20dB or -52dBm.

Despite of CW UTE Utility covered occupied channel of 7455 kHz
negativelly,

THESE THREE CHANNELS WERE FREE TONIGHT
7425, 7450, and 7480 kHz,
for a planned move away from present 7470 kHz ...
Listen to the ATTACHED 7470 kHz recording of tonight.

RT Shijak signal was poor and tiny in Sweden, Belgium,
nortwestern Germany, UK/IRL posts, and in both USA and Canada North
America target.

ALBANIA Frequency change: 7470 to 7465 kHz, Radio Tirana Ch.3 via
Shijak, Anglisht to North America 0230-0300 UT. Monitored in USA, Oklahoma
State, Enid city on 16 January, 2016. For more, as below:

7464.98 Jan 16 at 0253 UT, I check R. Tirana just in time to find it's
now made my recommended frequency change to "7465" from 7470 kHz, since
IBB Kuwait usurped that frequency, IBB - International Broadcasting
Bureau, USA.

Poor signal, just music fill now at end of the 0230 UT English to North
America (except UT Mondays), but nothing audible on 7470 kHz, and RT IS is
heard briefly (with much better modulation) at 0258 UT,
off before 0259 UT.

So there should once again be no co-channel QRM anywhere, but possibly
adjacent QRM from 7460 or 7470 kHz, worse in Europe for anyone listening
in the nightmiddle but both aimed eastish so not really bigsigs in North
America. 7460 kHz is 116 degrees from Pridnestrovye to Iran with Radio
Payem-e Doost (Baha'i) and 7470 kHz is 70 degrees from Kuwait with Deewa
Radio in Pashto.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld Jan 16;
and forward by Drita Cico-ALB RTSH Monitoring, Jan 16)

7470, Jan 15 at 0223 UT, R. Tirana IS is playing, poor signal, but at
least nothing much from IBB Kuwait underneath, which had been a JBA
carrier earlier. I understand the co-channel is much worse in eastern
North America, so another frequency change for Tirana is contemplated.
I suggest a minor shift back to 7465 kHz, but that may still have too much
adjacent QRM from 7460 and 7470 kHz.

You may recall that 7425 kHz was the original plan but avoided that due to
the Greenville mixing product of 7305 kHz Vatican over 7365 kHz Marti
another 60 kHz higher. That is still happening, S4 at 0207 UT, but the
Vatican half-sesquihour unexpectedly shifted a quarterhour earlier,
starting at 0145 UT instead of 0200 UT, so 7425 kHz should be clear again
by 0230 UT.

Well, almost: the 7305 kHz carrier and hence 7425 kHz mix did not go off
tonight until about 0232 UT. In the 7400s, we find several open
frequencies at 0230 UT: 7425, 7435, 7440, 7450, 7475, and 7480 kHz.
These have something on them: 7430, 7445, 7455, 7460, 7490 kHz.

ANGOLA 4949.75 R Nacional de Angola, Mulenvos, heard in Spain
at 1929-2020 UT on Dec 26, Portuguese comments, "Na Radio Nacional
de Angola", "A Radio publica, a Radio Nacional de Angola, 20 y 37",
comments, songs, sport comments, "Noite na Radio Nacional", vernacular
songs, 24322. Also heard at 2248-2330 UT, Dec 24, Portuguese comments,
songs, 14321.

ARGENTINA 11710.729 RAE Buenos Aires in Japanese noted at 0150 UT on

ARGENTINA 11710.838 UT Sat Jan 16 at 0305 UT, RAE in English announcing
this is a live broadcast at 12:05 am local time, on "11710" kHz.
Just once, I'd love to hear a perpetually off-frequency station announce
its correct exact frequency! The last digit I measured could be
plus or minus 1.

On the R75, if the signal level is close to the BFO level, one can almost
hear a zero-beat in 1-Hz tuning steps, but another way is to match pitches
a split kHz above and below the tuned frequency, compute the difference,
divide by 2 and add it to the lower offset tuned position. In this case
the beat sounded the same tone when I tuned to 11710.750 and 11710.927 kHz
which would put the midpoint at 11710.8385 kHz, but that fourth digit
would be pushing beyond the limits of accuracy. This one does vary
slightly, so next time, a considerably different reading is likely
(but off the air until UT Tuesday; meanwhile one may do the same earlier
in the days on 15345v kHz).

AUSTRALIA Kununurra expansion. Big Project.

A major project for us this year is to bring the third transmitter from
the States to Kununurra. This is a major undertaking and we ask for your
prayers that this may be a smooth process. There are a lot of preparation
work needed to incorporate the transmitter into our current
infrastructure. We hope to have this transmitter tested and fully
operational by the next broadcast schedule change.

You can read more about this project in the latest Newsletter.

"ReachBeyond Australia Bulletin, January 2016"

Good news! A third 100 kW shortwave transmitter is on its way from Elkhart
in the USA and is expected to be delivered in March 2016. Our opportunity
to share the good news just got better.

It is expected the first broadcast using our newly refurbished transmitter
will air in the first half of 2016. This will give Reach Beyond Australia
added transmission capacity as well as greater flexibility to deliver
programs at the best listening times.

Many of you will be aware of our DRM project. It consisted of refurbishing
and modifying an existing HC 100 transmitter plus upgrading it for digital
shortwave operation. The refurbishment is complete; however, the digital
technology that is required has not progressed to the extent expected and
is still at least 2 years away. Significant distribution of digital
receivers across Asia is also well behind schedule. This has helped in our
decision to bring the transmitter to Kununurra as soon as possible.

Derek Kickbush, Reach Beyond Media Manager said, "We're not dismissing
a move to digital shortwave. It just means it will be later rather than
sooner. What is evident is the need for our third transmitter NOW!

We have a great opportunity to enhance our reach into India and the
arrival of a third fully refurbished analogue transmitter will greatly
assist that.

That's the mandate God has given us, to reach the unreached with a message
of hope."

BELARUS [tentat.] re 11725 kHz UNID signal.
That's usual distorted spurious signals from Minsk Belarus site.

11730, Minsk Belarus, with Scratching Spurious broadcasts today 1410 UT
on Jan 14.

11730 kHz S=9+40dB oder -38dBm here in Stuttgart Germany.

Bulk of former exUSSR jamming transmitters noted as usual on spurious
frequency range:

Many 5 kW combined, heard today in 11671 to 11783 kHz range, means two
ranges in 11671-11713 kHz and 11747-11783 kHz.

UNIDENTIFIED 11725 Jan 14 at 1348 UT, extremely distorted modulation
blob. Only thing in EiBi and Aoki lists is R. Marumby, Brasil, but I think
it's inactive on this frequency and not even listed in WRTH 2016 on 11725
kHz at all. Maybe originates on some nearby frequency, such as 11730 kHz
Belarus or Iran.

Signal strength in North America only S=5-6 or -91dBm in NJ/MA-US and

Compared to remote SDR unit posts Belgium, western Germany, and Manchester

ERT 9420 kHz through the atmospheric noise on my own radio. But the Twente

Rimini on-line receiver (GlobalTuners.com) has good reception, not as good
as Twente and with some cross-channel interference. No tones there
either. I wonder what ERT has done different.

Fuer einen "Programmhoerer" bieten solche Listen wenig Substanzielles,
andererseits reichlich Ansatzpunkte fuer Background-Recherchen.

Hier meine Italia-Liste, zwar mit "html-Schmierzettel-Status", aber
zusaetzlichen Informationen + Links.

MADAGASCAR [JAPAN non] 7395, on Jan 16 at 0315 UT, NHK is signing on in

defacto North American service. The 250 kW, 320 degree beam from [Talata-

America around St Anthony, Newfoundland, thru Timmins, Cheyenne - so it
crosses Nebraska, close enough to Oklahoma at this distance from the other

Axually, it is a North American service for our Swahili-speakers; or
rather, here are the USA-only statistix, per

Low power medium wave in the Netherlands.

After switching off a number of high power transmitters in 2015, at the
end of December the Dutch government has launched a public consultation on
'opening up' the medium waveband for radio and non-radio applications with
'low power' and with limited government regulation. When referring to 'low
power' this means both a power in the range of 1 - 5 watts (site coverage)
and 50 - 100 watts (municipal coverage). The idea is that the same
frequencies will be re-used across the country. They will be handed out on
the basis of a first-come, first served basis.
Deadline for comments is 14 Febr 2016.

NETHERLANDS Low power medium wave in the Netherlands.

There was a report on mediamagazine.nl (2nd Jan) on this Dutch MW
consultation. This said there would be no more high power licences issued
for MW in the Netherlands.

It also mentions current MW stations
Groot Nieuws Radio (1008 kHz)
Radio 538 (891 kHz)
VAHON Hindustani Radio (1566 kHz)
KBC / Seagull (1602 kHz) and
Radio Paradise (1584 kHz)

and said Groot Nieuws Radio had indicated its MW broadcasts would finish
in September 2017 when its licence expired and that Radio 538 was also
expected to stop its MW broadcasts from Hulsberg.

BBC Engineers are at the scene near Start Point after a cable snapped,
causing the top third of one of the transmitters to bend slightly.

It's not thought medium wave transmissions have been affected.

USA WRMI at Okeechobee, Florida.

From the WRMI-AWR DX programme "Wavescan".

AS most of our regular Wavescan listeners know, this program is recorded
each week at the studios of WRMI - sometimes at our studio in Miami, but
more often than not at our studio in Okeechobee, where the WRMI
transmitter site is located. WRMI - Radio Miami International - first went
the air from a transmitter site in suburban Miami in 1994.

At this location, there was one 50-kilowatt transmitter and a corner
reflector antenna beamed to the Caribbean and Latin America. For part of
its lifespan, WRMI-Miami also used a North American antenna beamed toward
Vancouver. But the evening of 30 November 2013, WRMI's site in Miami went
off the air for the last time, and immediately the station's new
transmitter site in Okeechobee went the air for the first time.

Okeechobee is a small city located the north side of the massive Lake
Okeechobee in the center of Florida. The WRMI transmitter site is about
15 miles north and 7 miles west of the city of Okeechobee, located far out
in the rural countryside a one-square-mile cattle ranch.
The site was built by Family Radio, a Christian organization based in
Oakland, California, and was owned and operated by Family Radio under
the call letters WYFR until it closed down in June of 2013.

WRMI purchased the transmitter facility and put it back the air 1 December
2013, which was actually the evening of 30 November local time in
Okeechobee. The Okeechobee site is the largest privately-owned shortwave
transmitter site in the Western Hemisphere. It is comprised of
14 transmitters and 23 antennas - a selection of rhombics and log
periodics and one curtain array antenna beamed to 11 different azimuths
covering primarily North, Central and South America, the Caribbean,
Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

AS the site was off the air from the end of June until the beginning of
December 2013, it was unknown exactly how quickly the equipment would
return to normal operating condition. When we first went the air the
evening of November 30th, a number of technical problems with the
transmitters quickly surfaced.

Fortunately, we were not using all of the transmitters initially, so when
there was a problem with one unit we were able to replace it with another
transmitter until the repairs were made to the first one. And gradually
over the course of a few weeks all of the units were brought back into
regular operating condition, with the exception of two.

Transmitters 5 and 6 were very old Gates 50-kW units that had been used by
WYFR when it was originally located in Scituate, Massachusetts, and later
relocated to the new site in Okeechobee in the late 1970's. Both of these
transmitters were out of service at the time Family Radio went off the
air, and transmitter 6 was actually scrapped and removed before Radio
Miami International took over the site. Transmitter 5 was not operational,
and in fact many parts in it had been cannibalised for use in the other
WYFR transmitters.

Several months after WRMI began its broadcasts from Okeechobee, the hole
left by transmitter 6 was replaced by a transmitter moved from WRMI's old
site in Miami to the new one in central Florida. So now the station
had 13 operating transmitters. Only number 5 was inoperable.

All 13 working transmitters have been used most of the time over the past
almost two years. At this moment, 12 transmitters are the air every day -
some for just a short period of time such as an hour or two a day, and
some for as much as 24 hours a day. The other transmitter - no 1 - was in
daily use until just a couple of weeks ago, but is now in standby in case
something happens to one of the other transmitters and number 1 is needed
to fill in for a short time. WRMI has 14 Optimod audio processing units -
one for each transmitter. These provide an extra punch to the signal.

There is a large Uninterruptible Power Supply which keeps computers,
lights and air conditioning operating for several seconds in the event of
a power outage. The UPS is replaced by a 25-kW diesel generator which
kicks in approximately 20 seconds after a power outage. The generator is
not powerful enough to operate the transmitters themselves, but it keeps
the computers and the rest of the transmitter building operating until the
power comes back on. Fortunately, most of the power outages in Okeechobee
are very short - from a fraction of a second to a few minutes in length.

Currently, WRMI is transmitting about 150 hours per day of programming
from a number of clients including religious organizations and relays of
overseas stations such as Radio Japan, Radio Taiwan International, Radio
Slovakia International and Radio Prague. Dozens of smaller clients air a
variety of programs WRMI including news and music shows, cultural programs
and many others. WRMI also broadcasts a variety of DX programs in English,
Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, including of course Wavescan.

AS for future plans, WRMI hopes to eventually replace the old transmitter
5 with a new, or at least newer, unit, bringing the contingent back up to
14 transmitters. The station has a 23-yearlease with the owner of the
cattle ranch, so we hope to be the air shortwave for a long time to come
yet.

USA [CA state] A new broadcasting partner of the Californian short
wave station "KVOH - The Voice of Hope" <kvoh.net> is

Abounding Grace Radio <http://www.agradio.org/>
which airs Tue-Sat 0100-0130 UT on SW 9975 kHz.

Producer Christopher Gordon <cjgordon7 -at- aol.com> quickly replied
to an inquiry:
"We decided to throw AGR on KVOH this year as a trial and it seems to be
generating some good response." Christopher Gordon pastored at the Lynden
United Reformed Church from 2004 to 2012, and is presently preaching
pastor at the Escondido United Reformed Church. The programmes' history
page at

<http://www.agradio.org/our-history>

is very general, but more information can be found at

<http://www.escondidourc.org/abounding-grace-radio.html>

"Years ago I visited the KARI 550 AM radio station in Blaine, WA. KARI has
been broadcasting Christian programs since 1961. As I poked around the
studio looking at old records, stacks of eight-tracks, and pictures of
past Christian radio hosts such as J Vernon McGee, I was overwhelmed when
I looked out of a large window facing the lower mainland of B.C. and right
in its path stood seven two hundred and fifty foot towers with a signal
operating at five thousand watts. These towers were sending out a signal
that could reach to the greater Vancouver, B.C. area which has a
population of well over two million people.

[...] In 2005, the Lynden United Reformed Church, having a desire for
doing better at local outreach, approved the weekly airing of sermons on
KARI 550 AM. Airing sermons is common approach churches take when
utilizing Christian radio. While there are many benefits to this approach,
we found that sermons were difficult to air on the radio due to long
pausing, rotating audiences, and extensive editing needs. In 2007, the
Lynden URC purchased recording equipment and I began recording the content
of the sermons in a more conversational manner. We began airing fifteen
minute programs Monday-Friday on KARI.

This format worked well and the listener response was much greater. Today
we air thirty minute programs five times a week on KPRZ (San Diego) KARI
(Blaine, WA) and on weekends on KPXQ (Phoenix). Two years ago the Lynden
URC revamped Abounding Grace program and established a board of directors
to help develop and manage the program. All members of the Abounding Grace
board are committed to the historic Protestant Christian faith and
subscribe to the Three-Forms of Unity. The members of the board are Mark
Hicks (board chair), Ted Farver, Randy Winter, Ian Mcclure, Gary
VanderPol, Jason Vanderhorst, Pastor Gordon, and our very own Jim Jansma.
The board meets by Skype every month and we are working hard to make the
most of every opportunity to advance the gospel of Christ in our
communities."
