ALBANIA 7464.979 Radio Tirana, North America service in English
language at 0230-0258 UT on 2016-Jan-21.

Dear Drita, noted English sce of Radio Tirana Shijak this Jan 21 tonight.
Logged around 0228-0232 UT here in southern Germany, Belgium, and
Manchester Great Britain SDR software defined radio net posts.

7464.979 kHz accurate measured frequency at S=9+5dB or -68dBm signal
strength here in Europe.

Nothing suffered from lower 7460 kHz adjacent channel service of
Radio Payem e-Doost (Bahai sect movement) to Iran from
Moldova-Pridnestrovie Grigoriopol, latter 0230-0315 UT.

Around 0250-0258 UT - on the east coast of North America on Virginia and
Massachusetts remote net SDR units, signal was not much strong,
only S=8 signal.

Listen to the both audio records in ogg.format.

<7464_979_RT_Shijak_160121_0236UT_in Germany.ogg>
<7464_979_RT_Shijak_160121_0253UT_in Virginia_USA_east_coast.ogg>

Unfortunatelly consider the signal taken in Virginia-US suffered by strong
local powerline disturbtion of -82dBm.

02.56:53 UT start of Radio Tirana interval signal, S=8 level, and
02.58:00 UT end of pause interval signal, and
02.58:48 UT TX Shijak switch OFF totally.

That's a very good comparison of reception between Europe and EaCoast
NoAM. Propagation is really suffering currently and can only improve,
although WHRI (Stair) on 7355 kHz was better than it has been for some
time this morning at 0730 UT - 250 kW I guess. Good to know there was no
QRM to Tirana 7465 kHz - or slightly offset - on the low side, and
hopefully the same on the high side (7470 kHz). Not long now until
the A-16 changes, and hopefully condx will have improved by then.

ARGENTINA 11710.792 RAE Buenos Aires in Jpn / French at 0155 - 0208 UT
on Jan 20.

11710.792 At 0155 UT on Jan 20 heard end of RAE's Japanese program,
station ID at 0159 UT, interval signal, into French language start at
0200 UT. S=9 or -67dBm signal into Europe, out of a 335 degrees antenna.

Though is a sidelobe azimuth only, from Argentine towards our post here
in southern Germany.

Very clear nice audio channel ! - nice feeling to be heard such Latin
American song singer noted at 0200-0208 UT, I like very much dulce words,
sung "corazon ... suenas ...".

At 02.00:45 to 02.01:35 UT another station with 1000 Hertz test tone
disturbed on co-channel. Seemingly an antenna match check of CRI Russian
via Urumqi western China site, due to start at 0300-0357 UT segment then,
- or did originate from CNR1 Beijing #572 site antenna feed check by

11710.838 UT Sat Jan 16 at 0305 UT, RAE in English announcing this is a
live broadcast at 12:05 am local time, on "11710" kHz. Just once, I'd love
to hear a perpetually off-frequency station announce its correct exact
frequency! The last digit I measured could be plus or minus 1.

On the R75, if the signal level is close to the BFO level, one can almost
hear a zero-beat in 1-Hz tuning steps, but another way is to match pitches
a split kHz above and below the tuned frequency, compute the difference,
divide by 2 and add it to the lower offset tuned position. In this case
the beat sounded the same tone when I tuned to 11710.750 and 11710.927
kHz, which would put the midpoint at 11710.8385 kHz, but that fourth digit
would be pushing beyond the limits of accuracy. This one does vary
slightly, so next time, a considerably different reading is likely (but
off the air until UT Tuesday; meanwhile one may do the same earlier in the
days on 15345v kHz).

BOLIVIA 3310.00 R Mosoj Chaski, Cochabamba, at 0940-1005 UT on Dec 31,

5952.43 R Pio Doce, Siglo XX, at 2320-0057* UT on Dec 28 and Jan 11,

BRAZIL 4754.84 Radio Imaculada Conceicao, Campo Grande, MS - Mato

religious program and songs; CODAR QRM.

I must confess when tuning by and hearing religious singing here, my first
thought went to The Cross Radio, but quickly realized was the wrong
frequency and when announcer came on was the wrong language. Not often I
catch this one!

CAMBODIA Again on MW 918 kHz:
new 918 kHz site of National Radio of Kampuchea (RNK) at Kandal Stueng:

(Alan Davies-Jakarta-INS, Jan 16)

918 Nachdem die alte Anlage aus der Kolonialzeit im Stadtgebiet
aufgelassen und fuer Immobiliengeschaefte genutzt wurde, hat man 2012-2013
einen neuen 200 kW US Harris tx samt MW Antenne 15km weit ausserhalb in
Kandal Stueng errichtet.

Service herein, siehe oben.

INDIA Survey for MW & SW services of All India Radio.

A project for Technical audit of MW and SW services of All India Radio for
its Reach and Effectiveness has been undertaken by Prof. Girish Kumar,
Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Bombay. There are nearly 150 MW
transmitters, around 50 SW transmitters and 410 FM transmitters in India.
Our team would be doing radiation measurement all over India.

As part of the project, we also have to do survey for estimation of number
of people listening to MW and SW bands and the quality of programs being

The purpose of all the above is that FM radios are now wide spread and
people may not be listening to MW and SW. Majority of the mobile phones
and car radios have FM radio, but not MW and SW radios. MW and SW have
been in existence for the last six decades, but now the question is: are
these still useful? This project is of great national importance, since
Prasar Bharati is making financial losses of around Rs.10,000 crores
annually and also consuming massive electrical power and other resources.

We need to collect the data from 10,000+ people, which will help Prasar
Bharati to take a policy decision. I request you all to please contact
your relatives, friends, etc. in various parts of the country to give
their feedback. Please find the form below comprising of the details
regarding All India Radio services. Yours and your friends/relatives early
response will be greatly appreciated.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 7324.94 Wantok Radio Light, at 0740-0927 UT on Jan 16.
Started poor and slowly improved, but never reached the level of steady

hard to be positive of the language, due to Pidgin using so many English
words. The spoken modulation seemed rather low, whereas the music was

And then again earlier today from Ron:

7324.94 Wantok Radio Light. Jan 19 with decent signal strength 0813-0957,
but with moderately strong OTH radar QRM till that stopped at 0939*.

0825-0845 UT Syndicated USA program "Fresh Touch"; preaching in English;
ending the show with request for listeners to write c/o "Wantok Radio

From 2011 till early 2015, this time slot was always taken by the programs
of Dr. Tayo Adeyemi (New Wine Church, England), but perhaps as he died in
2013, WRL finally decided to drop his shows and replace this time period
with the "Fresh Touch" program. Based upon my observations, believe the
WRL website program schedule has not been updated in a long time!

7324.94 Wantok Radio Light - Port Moresby (pres).

Heard in the 30 min gap between CRI's s/off at 1930 UT and s/on
at 2000 UT. The carrier was fairly strong but the audio was quite
low at times. Programming consisted of continuous slow music (possibly
religious songs, some with church organ accompaniment) but no anncts
for the whole half hour monitored. I could still it through CRI's
dead-air carrier switch on at 1957 UT, and it could be heard faintly
under CRI's Serbian service till about 2015 when it faded due
to the daylight path between PNG and Mount Evelyn, Jan 15.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 7324.96 Wantok Radio Light (presumed). Thanks very
much to Hiroyuki Komatsubara (Japan) for the alert that WRL has
reactivated after being off the air for some time now; Jan 10 with several
openings with CRI off the air. 1257-1258 UT heard religious song; this
opening is usually 1, 2 or 3 minutes long.

After 1357 (CRI sign off time) heard very weak signal clearly off
frequency as usual; by 1413 UT had definite religious songs; 1418 UT
tentative ID and back to religious music; 1424 UT CRI transmitter turned
on covering WRL. Nice to have them back on the air again!

7324.94 Wantok Radio Light (pres). Jan 11 was a repeat of yesterday's
log; very poor/very weak, but able to make out the religious music;
1357-1402 UT announcers; 1402-1424 UT music. Thanks again to Hiroyuki
Komatsubara (Japan) for the alert, as he first heard them Jan 9
at 1411 UT.

Mauno Ritola measured 7324.942 kHz, so slightly lower that when last on
the air. This new slight change was also noted by Bryan Clark in New
Zealand - "Heard fading in here around 0800 UT today [Jan 11] and quite
readable by 0830 UT. I'm thinking their frequency may be a little lower
than when I last logged them?" and Mauno confirmed.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 7325-, on Jan 11 at 1255 UT, CRI Japanese with a JBA
carrier under slightly offset, presumed Wantok Radio Light, reported by
Ron Howard to have reactivated yesterday after many months. As he said,
CRI takes a break at 1257-1259 UT, and during that the JBA carrier is
indeed barely detectable, in fact more evident by the beat it makes with
CRI when it comes back on weaker at 1259 UT, having changed from Jihnua to
Xian site. Another longer window starts at 1357* UT of CRI, but again not
enough signal left of WRL to make anything out of it. Why WRL would choose
to confront its 1 kW with 500 kW from China is beyond comprehension.
CRI Japanese starts at 1000 UT.

SWEDEN Radio Sweden to cut German and Russian departments.

Radio Sweden - 21 January 2016
Swedish Radio announced on Thursday morning that it will drop two of
Radio Sweden's language departments, Russian and German, this spring.

Radio Sweden currently offers news and views about Sweden in English,
Arabic, Somali, Persian, Kurdish, German, Russian and Romani.

Explaining the decision to drop the Russian and German offerings, head of
Radio Sweden, Ingemar Loefgren, said, "German and Russian are a remainder
of the old overseas service for Radio Sweden, which no longer fits into
our task to reflect the whole diversity in Sweden."

Structural changes announced Thursday also include moving the English,
Arabic, Somali, Persian and Kurdish language departments under the
auspices of Swedish Radio News, or Ekot.

(On October 20, 2010, Radio Sweden ceased broadcasts on shortwave and
medium wave, as Swedish Radio's management decided that the Internet had
matured enough to support international broadcasts. At the same time the
English Service was extended to national broadcasts on FM, but programming
on weekends was discontinued. Services in English also continue on
satellite, both using Swedish Television's satellite and the World Radio
Network - Wiki.)

Digital Reprint of all Editions ever published from 1957-2015.

The "Danish Short Wave Club International" (DSWCI) was founded in November
1956 and is one of the most traditional and by far the most international
club for radio enthusiasts worldwide. Since January 1957 the club
publishes the regular magazine "Shortwave News" which for decades now is a
unique source of information due to a most international network of
correspondents and monitors worldwide.

From 1957 to 2000 "Shortwave News" was published on a monthly basis, and
after that every sixth week. In 1957 and 1958 the magazine was published
in Danish and from 1957 to 1969 two different editions were distributed:
"Shortwave News" in English and "Kortbolge Nyt" in Danish.
Since January 1970 the magazine is exclusively in English language.

The DSWCI decided on its last Annual General Meeting in 2015 to close the
club at the end of 2016. But it was agreed that everything ever published
from the DSWCI should also be available for future generations of radio
enthusiasts: A unique blend of accurate news, reports and background
information which was only possible with the great support of countless
people during the past almost six decades.

During the last years we got access to every edition of "Shortwave News"
and"Kortbolge Nyt" ever published. The magazines were scanned, digitized
and processed with an OCR software. The work is finished and therefore we
now can offer a DVD with almost 60 years of radio-history and club-history
of the DSWCI.

DSWCI Shortwave News Historical DVD
Reviewed by Jerry Berg <jsberg -at->

The Danish Shortwave Club International has long been one of the best
sources of information on shortwave broadcast DXing. Founded on November
18, 1956, the club has been producing a high-quality bulletin ever since.
With an international membership and an experienced, dedicated staff, it
has done an outstanding job of covering SWBCing, with an emphasis on
DXing. So it was sad to learn in June 2015 that the club would be closing
by the end of 2016. The decision was a product of the decline in shortwave
listening and DXing, the aging of the DSWCI Board members, and the
unavailability of younger members to take over.

Recognizing the wealth of information that has been published in the DSWCI
bulletin, Shortwave News, over the years, the club decided to issue a DVD
containing the entire run of DSWCI bulletins-every issue ever published.
The DVD was released in November 2015. The price is 49 Euros, including

It is a wonderful resource for serious shortwave research, or for those
wishing to take a nostalgic walk through the shortwave world "of old".

The first "SWN" was published in January 1957, and the DVD contains all
DSWCI bulletins from then through November

2015-usually monthly through 1999, 11 issues in 2000, ten in 2001, and
eight or nine per year there after. All the bulletins are in PDF format.
In Adobe Acrobat you navigate the DVD in the expected way. The years are
arranged chronologically in the list in the left-hand "Bookmarks" panel.
When you select a year, thumbnails of that year's issues appear in the
main panel on the right. (Read the complete review in the next SWN. Ed)

As long as the DSWCI website exists, you may also download from
"Shortwave News SWN on DVD" 17 sample editions of SWN from 1957 to 2002
free of charge. (Wernli)
