ANGOLA 4949.75 Radio Nacional de Angola, at 0408-0430 UT on Feb 1.
Several clear IDs; "African pop" (formerly hi-life, hi. I confess it was
convenient to use this nomenclature over the years to describe this music
genre, as it sounded more exotic than "African pop"); reception well above
the norm; enjoyable. My audio at

BAHRAIN 9745 (carrier + USB mode), Radio Bahrain, at 1419 UT on Jan 30.
Seemed to be the Maghrib (evening) call-to-prayer; for several days have
had decent reception; nice selection of music (classical guitar, ME type
singing, etc.).
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, DXplorer via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 31)

9744.9935 Radio Bahrain in usb mode [H3E SSB-FC full carrier), from Abu

low tiny level in signal skip zone at remote Doha Qatar unit.

BANGLADESH 4750, Bangladesh Betar (Home Service), at 1530 UT on Jan 31.
In English; "Assalamu alaikum. 9:30 PM. This is Bangladesh Betar.

being held in the capital, Bangladesh in the cricket quarter finals, etc.;
weather; "Commentary".

BHUTAN 6035.05 BBS Thimphu, at 0059 UT on Jan 30. Just after missing
sign on, heard the usual chanting/singing; weak.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, DXplorer via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 31)

see: 6035.055 BTN Bhutan BS, Thimphu, Sangaygang, Dzongkha service
noted around 0125 UT on Jan 27, odd frequency, S=6-7, repetitive
indigenous chanting and instrumental music, then indigenous singing again.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 27)

[CHINA and non] In a previous log, I suggested that of the 6035 kHz
stations, BHUTAN would be a better locale for "Shangri-La" than Yunnan,
China. Since it's fixional, there is a considerable amount of dispute over
where it "really is", influencing James Hilton, author of 'Lost Horizon'
anywhere from Pakistan, to several locations in China, mostly based now on
tourism-promotion. See

BOLIVIA 3310 Radio Mosoj Chaski, Cochabamba, 2350 UT yl in Quechua
at 2355 UT om talk in same, fair signal 29 January.

6134.80 Radio Santa Cruz, 2330 to 2350 UT enchanting music from Bolivia,
om with ments de Santa Cruz. 23 January.
(Robert Wilkner-FL-USA, DXplorer via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 30)

BOLIVIA/BRAZIL 6135.0 on Febr 1 at 0358 UT, S8 humbuzz which I have
assumed is the malfing R. Santa Cruz transmitter, but now seems centred
here rather than 6134.8 kHz, hard to pinpoint without a definite AM
carrier.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld Febr 1)

Noted Feb 3:
5952.42 Radio Pio Doce, at 0226* UT; after the usual sign off format
(whistling "Colonel Bogey March," full ID and chines). 5955 kHz seemed to
have jamming (noise) there, causing QRM.

6134.81  R. Santa Cruz, at 0203* UT; off with usual "Santa Cruz" song;
tonight did not notice any of their recent transmitter problems, but had
some Brazil (6135.18 kHz) QRM.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, DXplorer / hcdx via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 3)

6135 (25 kW) ZYE954 Radio Aparecida, Aparecida SP.
6135.213 accurate frequency seen fade-out late at 0850 UT on Febr 3,
on threshold level.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 3)

BOLIVIA Unidentified 6025.
6025 on Jan 31 at 0052 UT, two very weak carriers beating, one of which
is on the lo side circa 6024.95 kHz. Only two listed in Aoki at this time,
and which I find to be quite a reasonable explanation:
PBS Xizang, Lhasa, Tibet on one of its multiple frequencies, and
BOLIVIA, the off-frequency one, Radio Patria Nueva, which Aoki still
denominates by its old name, Radio Illimani.

Is that still used on air?
WRTH 2016 shows "Rede Illimani Radio Patria Nueva".
Rede would be Portuguese, not Spanish!
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld Febr 6)

BRAZIL 3375.1 Radio Municipal Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira, at 1048 UT with
om with rapid Portuguese comments to 1110 UT fade out 26 January.
(Robert Wilkner-FL-USA, DXplorer via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 30)

4785 Radio Caiari, Porto Velho, RO, 1026 UT "Bom Dia" PT om with good
signal but under strong CODAR interference, same om at 1027 UT, music
begins 1028 UT first instrumental for a minute then vocalist. 26 January.

4805 Radio Difusora do Amazonas,Manaus, 1025 to 1040 UT Portuguese
programming with long talk by om, no music. Weak signal strength - 26
January.

4885 Radio Clube do Para, Belem, PA, 1015 to 1035 UT om chat in
Portuguese, music bridges, strong signal but only in the local Brasil
morning, not noted recently at 2300 UT, 26 January.

4925.2 Radio Educacao Rural, Tefe, AM, 1020 to 1030 UT good music, strong
signal yl vocalist 26 January.

6135.2 Radio Aparecida, Aparecida, SP, 2335 to 2340 UT noted in usb to
avoid Santa Cruz, poor signal in PT with om comments 23 January.
(Robert Wilkner-FL-USA, DXplorer via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 30)

15190 Radio Inconfidencia (M for maybe), 2314-2345 UT on 15 Jan, at
2258-2335+ UT on 17 Jan., 2319-2358+ UT on 22 Jan. Portuguese chat, some
MPB/ballads, interviews, short program of classical music 2320-2335 UT on
17 Jan. & a very sketchy "Inconfidencia..." tossed in the commentary, also
runs an echoey promo at BOH, 22 Jan. program seemed like it was sponsored
by "Radio Nacional" as a few mentions of RN during the discussion.

Signal just above threshhold &, i'm sure some pareidolia on my part helped
with the reception. One more time at 2258-2345 UT on 24 Jan. with even
poorer signal than usual (RB2/Voz Missionaria/Aparecida on 25/31mb also
JBA).
(Dan Sheedy-CA-USA; via Robert Wilkner-FL-USA,
DXplorer via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 30)

BRAZIL 15190.090 Radio Inconfidencia, Belo Horizonte, MG, with nice
S=8 or -78dBm signal into southern Germany at 0821 UT Febr 3, some guitar
instrument singer group heard here with joyful songs.

10 seconds later heard on web livestream
<http://inconfidencia.mg.gov.br/modules/programacao/players/pop_am.php>

But not // Inconfidencia heard on 6010 kHz at this hour.
Two signals heard and seen on stronger S=6 signal, on 6010.258 kHz
at 0828 UT, different frequency - signal hops 10...20 Hertz up and down.
And another tiny S=3-4 on threshold level on 6010.033 kHz at 0840 UT Febr
3.

Maybe another Brazilian program of 5 kW ZYE521 Radio Inconfidencia, Belo
Horizonte MG, and on upper side Voz de tu Conciencia from Puerto Lleras
Meta-CLM program {noting on 5910 kHz either} ?

6010v channel stations are always a puzzle to identify, due of both tiny
signals ...

CANADA 6160 kHz CBC 01:46 UT on 31 Jan 2016.

I'm listening to nominal 6160 kHz. CKZU from Vancouver lower mainland is
not very far away, compared to CKZN St John's from Newfoundland. At the
moment, CKZN is winning out, although both are similar strength. I'm
measuring one on 6159.974 kHz, while the other is 6159.985 kHz. The latter
(Newfoundland) is a little stronger, so most of the audio I'm hearing is
from them. Interesting how propagation works!

COLOMBIA 6010.1 La Voz de tu Conciencia, Puerto Lleras, 1020 - 1030 UT
major hum on the signal with om in Spanish same hum problem
at 2300 to 2305 UT on 26 January.

COLOMBIA 5910.05, on Feb 4 at 0547 UT, tropical music at S=9+15dB, so
Alcaravan Radio is back on its usual + offset; no QRM now. BTW, the
Tennesseans on 5830, 5890, 5935 kHz are much weaker, S7 very poor, not
always the case. I had thought HJDH inactive, as I have not been hearing
it after ~0630 UT when I usually start bedtime monitoring. Maybe they sign
off circa 0600 UT now? Also check for sibling on 6010 kHz, finding only a
JBA carrier, maybe something other than Conciencia. I don't check again
until 0744 UT when 5910 kHz is definitely off.

I see in WRTH 2016 schedule as 23-10 UT for both 6010 and 5910 kHz, but
5910 kHz has a single dagger by it, unexplained, unlike the double dagger
meaning inactive next to the only other Colombian SW listed, HJOY, LV del
Guaviare, 2000-0300 UT with 5 kW on 6035 kHz which has been gone for
years, so is there some reason to expect it back? The April 2015 Domestic
Broadcasting Survey from DSWCI has it on the ever-expanding roster of
deleted stations, as not heard since May 2011.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld Febr 5)

5910.260 kHz armchair listening in NJ/NY/MA East_USA S=9 in peaks.
On 6010 channel two stations visible: 6010.034 and 6010.086 kHz.
Never ending Puzzle here on 6010 kHz.

GERMANY AFN Vilseck in Germany on 1107 kHz still on air.

Yesterday, I checked the mediumwave frequency of AFN American Forces
Network Bavaria in Vilseck on the radio of my car, something I regularly
do when driving outside the city of Nuremberg. As of 3 February, the
station was still audible on 1107 kHz.
(Prof. Dr. Hansjoerg Biener writes in Ydun's Medium Wave Info, Febr 3)

GERMANY/BELGIUM AFN Benelux 1143 kHz shut down.

So where is/was it? Despite the name, it's axually in Germany,
Moenchengladbach, 1 kW per WRTH which also says it was slated for
closedown in 2016. But for address info refers us to Belgium. Apparently
carried programming originating in Belgium. But the AFN SHAPE entry under
BELGIUM never mentions the name Benelux! And does not refer to any
emitters in Holland or Luxembourg, let alone Germany.

Own programming from AFN SHAPE only during certain hours, elsewhen
relaying AFN Europe, so back to Germany. How convoluted. The AFN Benelux
FB by that name is active, with lots of stuff unrelated to broadcasting,
and I can't now find the cited entry:
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Feb 6)

Re: AFN Benelux 1143 kHz shut down.

The 1143 kHz question (and AFN Benelux response) were in the Visitor Posts
(scroll through on the left hand side of the AFN Benelux Facebook page)
Since the original response, "AFN Benelux" has added this further response
(4 Feb):

AFN Benelux "In a cost saving measure and to provide a better service to
our community, we have moved to FM stations that will better cover the
area.

Our new frequencies are 96.9 FM and 99.7 FM. These will overlap to cover
Schinnen, JFC Brunssum, and Geilenkirchen. We apologize for any
inconvenience the move to our new frequencies has caused."

Schinnen and Brunssum are in the Netherlands (province of Limburg) and
Geilenkirchen across the border in Germany.

INDONESIA My 3325 kHz unID of Jan 31 must have been RRI Palangkaraya,
as Ron Howard subsequently reported that the reactivated NBC Buka,
Bougainville PNG, was off again that date, only RRI. How about Feb 1?

3325, on Feb 1 at 1358 check, S6 signal with talk, 1359 UT music; and
astoundingly a 5- or 6-pip timesignal ending at the very late hour of
1402:43 UT. This came after a few notes being repeated, an interval
signal? And more talk. Only one station audible, so suspect this too is
RRI, but awaiting Ron's report for today. With Enid sunrise at 1333 UT,
earlying at about one minute per day, I really need to monitor during the
previous hour, but got to sleep sometime.

INDONESIA/PNG 3325, on Feb 3 at 1400 UT, barely make out a Radio
Republik Indonesia ID vs hash on the channel probably local device QRM. So
Palangkaraya instead of Bougainville. Palangkaraya is inland south-central
Borneo (Kalimantan). The two are 4222 km apart, or 2623 miles, so perhaps
to them it seems like they can share a frequency.

3325, on Feb 4 at 1248 UT, S9 signal with music, so now is it Bougainville
or Palangkaraya? 1300 soft announcement, 1302.5 UT announcement with music
and hard-sell ads(?), think language is Indonesian, 1307 UT music. (At
1315 UT I start monitoring 6020 kHz and find Bougainville, q.v. is still
there on its 'day' frequency at local midnight). At 1324 UT, 3325 kHz is
playing different music than 6020 kHz; at 1356 UT, 3325 kHz has become
much weaker, naturally fading down earlier than 6 MHz.

NIGERIA Voice of Nigeria back on 11770 kHz, Febr 2, 1730+ UT, Arabic

... so the current observed "schedule" with the whining on-frequency
transmitter seems to be:

0900-(announced, but unheard 0900+1000 on any of the known channels),
so actually ????-1530 UT 15120 kHz English

1530-1600 French 15120 (announced as 9690) kHz.

1600-1630 Kisuaheli 9690 kHz (it took until 1605+ UT, both Feb 1 and Feb 2
to sign on, difficult to find the long-unused EaAF antenna ;-))

1630-1730 ???? (probably Yoruba and Igbo scheduled here, but probably
unaired or, if on 7255 kHz, inaudible under strong co-channel QRM)

1730-1800 Arabic 11770 kHz.

Updates and completions will be regularly provided on this site:
<www.muester.org/uwz/ms-alt/africalist/>

(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 2)

NIGERIA 11770.028 kHz signal noted before off at 1837 UT Febr 2,
maybe transmitter moved from 25 mb to 41 mb at 1850 UT to
7254.937 kHz were clearly visible and heard at 2000 UT Febr 2.

7255 kHz channel usually is also covered by CRI Russian service with
tremendous signal into Europe, til 2059 UT daily.

7254.924 kHz wobbling signal this morning 4 Hertz up and down hopping,
around S=8-9 here in central Europe this morning Febr 3 at 0736 UT.

Flute mx at 0738 kHz, female and male montonous speak of presenter
in Hausa (not French).

But when checked at 0815 UT again, female talk and interview reporter in
English heard clear at S=8 or -79dBm here in central Europe.

Nothing 'seen' on 9690v nor 15120 kHz,
nor on Kaduna Nigeria 6090v kHz either.
[selected SDR options, span 12.5 kHz RBW 15.3 Hertz]
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 3)

At 0858 UT on Febr 3, 7254.9 kHz left with interval signal, at 0900 UT on
9690.0 kHz came up, also with English, but likely not the same
transmitter.

That would fit into recent announcements in the afternoon on 15120 kHz,
that they would return at 0900 UT. No surprise they think of "their"
service, not particularly Voice of Nigeria as a whole or the channel and
target area they serve.

So at 0900 UT, there's obviously a switch from VON-Abuja-English-Service
to VON-Lagos-English-Service ... so maybe at 1530 UT again they may
announce to their supposed European audience that they'll be back
at 0900 UT while - a guess - the other English service at 1930 UT would
announce to be back at 0800 UT hours.

"The NBC Radio Bougainville's Manager's Official Residence at the
Transmitter site in Kubu on Buka Island was burnt to ashes just after
midday today.

Manageress, CHRISTINE TALEI a veteran Broadcaster is the current boss of
the station and resides in this house.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage, but Technicians were
working on the new Shortwave Transmitter for the Station when the fire was
noticed.

The compound also shares houses with the Station Technician and the
shortwave Transmitter plus the satellite link that sends program signals
for Radio Bougainville and New Dawn FM to Central and South Bougainville.

According to the Station Technicians equipments were switched off but were
switched on again after the fire died out.

Yesterday, New Dawn FM ran a story of the heat of the sun as unbearable in

{UNIDENTIFIED} re 3325 kHz, Jan 30 circa 1355 UT, JBA music, Indonesia?
I'm scanning the 90m band for a new signal, as Ian in Oz has been
tantalizing us with hints about a reactivated Oceania station with a new
10 kW transmitter.

Later it's revealed to be NBC Bougainville here and on day frequency
testing sporadically at night, 6020 kHz, both of which Ron Howard has now
heard and IDed.

Trouble is, RRI is still on 3325 kHz as well, say Ron and Tony Magon in
NSW!

Geez, when making a comeback, why in the world don't they do it on a clear
frequency?? Clues from Ian included "Cu", leading me to PNG where there
are several copper mines, but which? Wewak 3335 / 6140 kHz would have
worked too.
{yes, was also my guess, wb Jan 30}

Due to secessionism during previous SW activity, we granted BOUGAINVILLE
separate radio country status, which is no more dubious than some club
already breaking up PNG into more than one country for QSL and counting
purposes. Current WRTH 2016 does not mark 3325 kHz as inactive, but does
for 6020 kHz. They are listed as: "NBC Buka, 'Maus Bilong Sankamap',
Buka ARB" Which means the Voice of the Sunrise, but what's ARB? Altho
integrated within PNG now, it's Autonomous Region of Bougainville, and
BTW, ARB is so far out that unlike the rest of PNG on UT +10hrs, this is
on UT +11 hrs, just to be different. See also UNID 5960- log

3325 NBC Bouganville, my Latest Observations. There were at least three
distinct signal levels used by NBC Bouganville (3325 kHz) on the late
local evening of Feb 3rd as a result of whatever changes.

I didn't hear any RRI before local midnight here. Ron's observations re
levels & tx off fit with mine, I think off before 1340 UT. There's still a
problem with the audio on 3325 kHz from my observations. Still seams
muffled & spectrum view indicates narrow bandwidth. NBC Madang has wider
bandwidth & thus more intelligible.

PNG {BOUGAINVILLE} 6020.00 on Feb 4 at 0746 UT, I have an S=7-S9
signal, no QRM at all, with lo-key talk possibly in English;
0748 UT music, 0753 talk, 0758 piano music, and singing past 0801 UT.
0802 UT an announcement I think mentioning NBC, cut off the air abruptly
at 0802:44* UT.

I figure the reactivated NBC outlet here has finished with its day
frequency at 7 pm local, and is moving to night frequency 3325 kHz, which
I do not expect to propagate this early, and do not hear; and besides it's
way past my bedtime.

This was certainly not on 6020.7 kHz where Karel Honzik recently reported
it by long path to Czechia around this same time of day; maybe initially
they did not have the frequency accurately tuned up.

Yet I'm awake again at 1248 UT, to find an S9 signal with music
on 3325 kHz, maybe a second carrier? Not sure. But I decide this
is INDONESIA, q.v.

6020 on Feb 4 at 1315 UT I finally check NBC's day frequency, and there
it is, after midnight local time! With Indonesia on 3325 kHz, and only two
frequencies available, it makes sense to stay/resume on 6020 kHz, altho
designed for day propagation only. This is S9, and no sign of Vietnamese
from Vietnam, or anything else on 6020 kHz. I hear some English words,
constitution, people of Solomons, so in suspected Tok Pisin; lo-key studio
announcer is interviewing various people on phone, with brief instrumental
music interludes between, and abruptly faded out when someone else is
ready to speak.

1320 UT seems to mention numbers, phone? 1323 music (different music on
3325 with Indonesia); 1324 back to tok in Pisin; 1326 music; 1330 phone
talk; 1333 hear feminine voice on phone for first time; 1335 music and
running-water ute QRM; 1356 UT woman singing, music past 1400 UT,
song maybe mentions "my country", anthem?

1401 UT definite ID by YL as "NBC National Radio", back to more music with
autotune. At 1402, 6020 kHz is S=9+20dB; 1405 UT mentions Papua New
Guinea, another song; 1410 NBC promo, mostly music. 1415, half a
sesquihour after sunrise here, beginning to fade down, to only S9 by 1420;
JBA carrier by 1443 UT. If they are still testing the new 10 kW
transmitter, can't be sure which frequency if either will be on air at any
particular time the next days. I wonder what kind of antenna, not NVIS?
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld Febr 5)

PHILIPPINES 17700.09 R. Pilipinas, at 0219-0241 UT on Feb 1. This
frequency had been off the air for quite a while; in English; many IDs;
PBS news; " 'DFA On-line,' news and events from different Philippine
embassies and consulates around the world"; "Philippine Trivia"; "It's
More Fun In The Philippines," etc.; 15640 // 17820 kHz; all mostly fair.

UNIDENTIFIED STATION - BALKANS / CAUCASUS.

Unidentified station in Russian was heard again on 27 Jan 2016
from 1920 to 1959 UT on MW 1530 kHz. A very strong signal and
good modulation, reminiscent of Grigoriopol transmitter.

Directional "Luup" antenna tube radio and portable "Sony" with ferrite
antenna indicate direction between Grigoriopol and Krasnodar. Transmit
military and songs about outer space, talking about Yuri Gagarin, an
interview on the subject of space with the Finnish expert, and in early
congratulations soldiers.

For the first time the station has been detected by Vasily Lazarev of the
Samara region in July 2015. He suggests that this radio Constanta,
Romania. I heard 13th January 2016 between 1900-2000 UT, but heard only
folk songs (about 1920 UT song "Katyushaa"), but on January 27 already,
and we are in Russian.

Compared second transmitter Radio Constanta at 909 kHz, but it was their
transfer in Romanian Constanta and generally come here for a very weak
signal at 1530 and 909 kHz, and the Russian-speaking radio was very loud
signal. WRTH Mauno Ritola expert from Finland suggests that it is a pirate
station, but hardly a pirate will have the power.
(Rumen Pankov, Sofia-BUL, RUSdx Jan 31)

27 Jan 2016 I was listening to this broadcast in Russian.
Severe noise was from Radio Actualitati-Romania.

The signals from radio stations were fading and he could hear the one that
another station. The program included songs about the space program, and
then record Gagarin, interviews Finn and passed on the tale "Moroz
Ivanovich."

After a fairy tale female announcer declared that these programs are
broadcast on Mondays and Wednesdays. Total transfer I have not heard of
identification and name of the program.

PS: Now is the time 0145 UT (on Jan 31, the RUSdx editor). At a frequency
of 1530 kHz radio heard in Russian - religioznye transmission: the songs
constantly, reading. The radio broadcast has been working for a long time.
But identifying never heard. According to data from the Internet is
possible from Radio Moldova. Basically, the radio is heard in the morning.
