ALASKA 11870, June 8 at 1254 UT, KNLS is S9, surprisingly good, close to
directly off the back, signing off English hour with full new sked by Rob:
11870 kHz at 08 & 12 UT; 7355 kHz also at 12 UT (JBA carrier here),
9690 kHz at 10 UT, 11765 kHz at 14 UT.

Also if in SoAsia, listen at 02 UT on 9600 kHz, 03 UT on 15515 kHz (which
are Madagascar he fails to mention). I first checked 11885 kHz where Dave
Valko caught KNLS on June 5 until 1259 UT, // 11870 kHz, but no 11885 kHz
here today). At 1259 UT, 11870 kHz to open carrier and off, but back on
with open carrier at *1300-1303* UT (or something else?)

11870, June 9 at 1221 UT, checking KNLS English again earlier in the hour,
which was in well yesterday by closing. Today it's VP S2-S4 with echo,
long/short path? pop music, 1226 UT announcements I can't be positive are
in English, much weaker than Vatican via Philippines open carrier already
on 11875 kHz at S9. KNLS improves slightly to S5-S7 by closing circa
1255 UT with English schedule, but still unusable.

Checking their own website, as expected, far out-of-date schedule at

<http://www.knls.org/broadcasting-front.html>

showing everything on 6, 7 or 9 MHz, nothing higher, and the MWV sked is
also old, from B-16 season. As usual, we have to go to Russian to find the
current sked for all languages, such as

<http://www.knls.net/rus/schedule.htm>

The Chinese site
<http://www.smzg.org/home/>

refuses to load for minutes but when it does, schedule there is out of
date too. The Chinese must also go to the Russian page for accurate info!
For example, Chinese at 0800-1000 UT is really on 11885 kHz (which
explains how 11885 kHz was once erroneously on air a few hours later; and
Dave Valko says it was again today June 9 // 11870 kHz during the
12 English hour), but the Chinese page shows 9655 kHz and the English
page 7355 kHz for Chinese at 08-10 UT !
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld June 9)

Just noticed now at 1220 UT KNLS is on 11885 kHz again unscheduled and
parallel to 11870 kHz. Not as good here as the first time noted on
Monday. 1221 UT ID and mailing address announcement by lady, song
announcement, and into "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. Just want
to add that of course no other frequencies are noted on KNLS now except
for 11885 and 11870 kHz. 1227 UT short segment about DXing equipment and
techniques now, and into song by U2.
(Dave Valko-PA-USA, hcdx June 9)

11885 // 11870 kHz, June 21 at 1205 UT, KNLS English once again doubling
up only a sesquideka_kHz apart, instead of one on 7355 kHz; 1307 UT "New
Life Station" ID. About equal, fading around S6. At 1315 UT, Chinese still
on 11885 kHz much stronger than // 9655 kHz. I suppose they are on
different azimuths, of which KNLS has four available, thanks to slewing at
15-degree intervals: 270, 285, 300, and 315degr.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and dxld June 21)

ALASKA Checked KNLS Anchor Point bcasts today Thur June 22 in SDR remote
post at Nagoya Japan. Excellent audio quality noted.

11870 kHz KNLS Russian sce, noted with (?religious?) hard-rock-pop music
at 0952 UT, S=9+35dB strength in Japan. 10 kHz wide audio block.

At 09.56:10 UT heard KNLS station ID "... Anchor Point, Alaska ...
St. Petersburg Russia ..."...

11885 kHz KNLS Chinese sce, at 0940 UT, also S=9+35dB strength
in Nagoya Japan, 10.8 kHz wide signal, talk on expression Mandarin-English
"hold it ...".

9655 kHz KNLS Chinese sce, from 1000 UT KNLS IS,
10.02:16 UT Mandarin Chinese program start.
10-12 UT schedule seemingly requested ?

31 mb signals are stronger at Nagoya / Tokyo Japan:
S=9+40dB signal strength.

9690 kHz KNLS English sce, from UT KNLS IS, 10.01:16 UT English program
start signature, scheduled 10-11 UT, S=9+40dB strength.

Midwinter's Day 2017 21 June, 2017 News stories

As darkness cloaks Antarctica, science and support staff wintering across
the white continent will today celebrate Midwinter's Day - the shortest
day in the Austral winter. With some staff experiencing 24-hour darkness,
this day represents a turning point where the return of the sun gets ever
closer.

Aurora Australis looking south from Rothera Point in Antarctica [caption}

In a tradition that goes back to the days of Scott and Shackleton, BAS
staff at Rothera, Bird Island and King Edward Point Research Stations,
will celebrate with a festive meal and exchange gifts. Prime Minister
Theresa May has sent a letter congratulating BAS staff on the achievements
of this year, and wishing them a happy Midwinter's Day.

A highlight, which brings family and friends closer, is listening to the
BBC World Service's annual Midwinter's Day broadcast. This year's
programme is presented by radio DJ Cerys Matthews of BBC6 Music and will
include personal greetings to everyone working at BAS's research stations.

The world-class polar research carried out by BAS scientists continues
throughout the year, so festivities must fit around ongoing science and
maintenance tasks. Some of the fun activities this year include "Winter
Olympics", breakfast in bed served by station leaders, and exchanging
home-made gifts with each other.

Of course, nothing possible into the west coast CAN/USA,
but using a Swedish remote Perseus SDR unit, all frequencies are on:

5985 Woofferton is best with excellent S=9+10dB signal strength.
7230 Woofferton is good, but with adjacent splatter from 7225 kHz.
7360 Ascension very good reception.
6035 Al Dhabayya UAE fair/good.

We need 25 meters are higher frequencies to stand any chance here!

5985 kHz went off at 21.39:30 UT, but returned shortly after.

AUSTRALIA Engineer at inquiry by Barclay White June 20, 2017

<http://www.sheppnews.com.au/2017/06/20/95151/engineer-at-inquiry>

A radio engineer from the defunct Radio Australia broadcasting
facility at Shepparton has been brought to Federal Parliament to speak
to senators about the importance of shortwave.

Gary Baker, who once worked at the facility, has been campaigning for
the service to return to the airwaves since it was shut down by the
ABC earlier this year.

He issued a submission to a senate inquiry, spearheaded by South
Australian senator Nick Xenophon and, on Friday, spoke to senators at
a public hearing of the inquiry.

"It seems like the evidence is there to keep HF (high frequency)
radio going into the Pacific from out of Shepparton," Mr Baker said.

The Shepparton shortwave broadcasting facility on Verney Rd sent out
the Radio Australia broadcast to the Pacific and could be heard by
people with special radios across the globe.

Although it could be months before parliament votes on bringing back
shortwave, it could be too late, as BAI Communications has put the
broadcasting site on the market.

"To rebuild a site like that it would probably cost more than $50
million," Mr Baker said.

Mr Xenophon said the ABC representatives who spoke at the inquiry did
not have a convincing argument for shutting down the service.

"This has been a very narrow-minded and backwards decision on behalf
of the ABC," Mr Xenophon said.

"I'm not giving up on this, it is too big an issue."

BRAZIL   4885.02, on June 23 at 0206 UT, JBA carrier vs hi QRN level;
also at 0451 when I measure it slightly on hi side, and still at 0558.

Radio Clube do Para, Belem, had been the strongest and most reliable ZY on
60m, and usually on all night [...]

4885 is one of those frequencies with more than one Brazilian tropical
station, the other being Rdif. Acreana, Rio Branco, with nominal sked in
WRTH 2017 as 0900-0400 UT, but both were double-daggered as inactive. So
am I hearing its carrier now, or is Para coming back? Suspect the latter,
as both Dave Valko and Anker Petersen had previously reported Para on
4885.02 kHz.

Similar varying signal to 10 hours earlier, but no het as Yemen not

In the Czech Republic, broadcasted 14 digital radio stations operating in
the DAB+ standard. This event was preceded by two years of tests, writes
<www.Mediar.cz>

On June 1, two years after the start of the test broadcasting in the
digital standard DAB+ in the Czech Republic, the multiplex, which is
used by the public broadcaster Czech Radio, was put into full operation.

The country has earned four transmitters, providing coverage by digital
radio signal territory, which is home to 40% of the country's population.

Currently, a total of 14 radio stations broadcasting in the DAB+ standard
are available to residents of Brno, Ostrava and Plzen and their
surroundings.

Currently, there are no clear plans for further development of DAB+ in the
Czech Republic. Apparently, his future depends on the general interest
that residents of the districts, where the digital radio signal is
already available, will show to the technology.

zweistufige Aenderung:

'dauernde Varianz bzw. Wanderung' genau sieht.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA After listening for PNG Milne Bay (3365 kHz) for the
past week, I finally have a little audio (1111 UT), actually a little
better than Bougainville (3325 kHz).

R Milne Bay - PNG - 3365 kHz (actually closer to 3364.96 kHz) - 1110 UT,
music followed by OM announcer in unknown language, sinpo 12411 (lots of
what sounds like T-Storm QRM even though weather is fine in NE OK), pretty
much gone by 1140 UT (can still hear carrier but no audio).

Bougainville - PNG - 3325 kHz - 1100 UT, have had pretty reliable
reception of this for the past week or so (after a long absence), dance
music followed by YL announcer at TOH, sinpo 12411, signal gone by 1142 UT
(no carrier either so may have signed-off??)
(Chris Krug KC5IIE, Tulsa-OK-USA, dxld June 8)

Hi Chris, Very nice report! Glad to see someone else monitoring PNG.

June 8, indeed NBC Bougainville off the air earlier than recently
observed; gone before 1137 today, after being heard earlier: 1106-1120 UT.

June 8, noted silent were 3260 kHz (NBC Madang) and 3275 kHz (NBC Southern
Highlands), at 1121 UT. So today only NBC Bougainville and NBC Milne Bay
(3365 kHz) were heard.

Would seem that NBC will try very hard to keep Bougainville active on SW,
as I have been reading on the web about the importance of the June 15,
2019 referendum, to determine if the the citizens want a separate
independence for Bougainville or want to remain an autonomous region of
PNG. The referendum is not binding on the government. Before voting in
2019, there will be many factors for them to take into account regarding
this important vote. Will be interesting to see what develops over the
next two years.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA)
I didn't make clear referendum is two years off (gh, dxld / hcdx June 14)

Under the sanctions imposed by Ukraine on Russian companies, the radio
station Nashe Radio, which broadcasts songs of Russian rock artists, as
well as the Orthodox radio Vera, follows from the published order of
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

Sanctions were adopted for a period of three years. Among the restrictions
- the termination of the provision of telecommunications services and the
use of public telecommunications networks, follows from the document.

Also under Ukrainian sanctions - state television and radio company VGTRK
(including the department for the development of non-terrestrial TV
channels), "National Media Group", "First Channel", Life portal, "Zvezda"
TV channel, "Public Television of Russia".

The media holding of RBC also fell under the sanctions.
